The Pirelli Cinturato P7 family of high and ultra high performance tires was developed for the drivers of medium to high performance cars looking to combine performance with enhanced respect for the environment. Consisting of a variety of tire models that offer either summer or all-season tread designs molded over standard, Run Flat or Seal Inside (self-sealing) internal constructions, all Cinturato P7 tires feature Pirelli's “green performance,” which delivers reduced tire rolling resistance and vehicle CO2 emissions without abandoning noise comfort, traction and wear.
Because the Cinturato P7 was introduced in Europe before being imported into the United States, Pirelli invited several members of the Tire Rack team to experience the Cinturato P7 Ultra High Performance Summer tires behind the wheel of a six-speed equipped BMW 528i at their Vizzola proving grounds in Italy.
Since wet traction had been a common trade off in some of the industry's earlier efforts to reduce tire rolling resistance, the selection of Pirelli's Vizzola proving grounds was ideal for this experience. Vizzola's sprinkler-wetted surface and mix of moderate straights, fast slaloms, sweeping turns, elevation changes and plentiful braking and acceleration opportunities proved to be great challenges for any tire and a fitting place to experience the Cinturato P7.
While lap times weren't recorded, the Cinturato P7 provided stable handling and inspired confidence. Steering responded with authority through the slalom section, and the tire/vehicle combination displayed good front to rear balance through the sweeping turns. Wet acceleration traction was also impressive, with only moderate wheelspin experienced under near-full throttle applications.
While not a thorough evaluation, our team came away from the experience impressed with the wet handling of this “green performer.”
