The ContiSportContact 5 is Continental’s Max Performance Summer tire. Initially developed to match the sporty driving characteristics of Mercedes-Benz SLK350 roadsters, the ContiSportContact 5 is designed to combine short braking distances and good cornering traction with reduced fuel consumption and good treadwear. However like all summer tires, they are not intended to be driven in near freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.
The ContiSportContact 5 uses Continental’s Black Chilli compound molded into an asymmetric tread design that features a macro-block outboard shoulder that adapts to the road surface to improve road grip and cornering stability. Four circumferential grooves channel water to resist hydroplaning and enhance wet traction. A continuous center rib and notched intermediate ribs promote steering response and straight-line tracking.
The ContiSportContact 5’s Black Chilli compound’s short-chain polymers react to braking forces by building heat to shorten braking distance on wet and dry roads, while the compound’s long-chain polymers release the absorbed energy more efficiently at constant speeds to reduced rolling resistance. Thus, the tire stops faster and remains cooler for longer life and reduced fuel consumption.
The tire's internal structure features twin steel belts reinforced with spirally wrapped polyamide (a mixture of heat-resistant synthetic aramid fiber and nylon threads) that enhances the ride quality while tuning the contact area's vertical flexibility and lateral rigidity.

Fue desarrollado inicialmente para ajustarse a las características del manejo deportivo ofrecidas por el Mercedes-Benz SLK350. Su diseño combina un frenado en corta distancia y mayor tracción al tomar curvas, con, reducción en el consumo de combustible y un desgaste más lento. Sin embargo, como todo neumático de verano, no fue diseñado para ser utilizado en temperaturas cercanas al nivel de congelación o superficies con hielo o nieve.
El ContiSportContact 5 posee un compuesto de caucho que utiliza la tecnología Black Chilli de Continental y es moldeado en una banda de rodamiento con diseño asimétrico, que cuenta con macro-bloques en el borde externo, los cuales se adaptan a la superficie de la carretera mejorando el agarre y la estabilidad al tomar curvas. Cuatro canales circunferenciales sacan el agua del área de contacto con la carretera, mejorando la tracción sobre mojado y la resistencia al deslizamiento sobre agua (hydroplaning). Un segmento central continuo y otros cóncavos, promueven mejor respuesta al girar el volante, a la vez de, mantener la capacidad de continuar en línea recta.
Los polímeros de cadena corta del compuesto de caucho Black Chilli del ContiSportContact 5 reaccionan a las fuerzas del frenado aumentando el calor, para reducir la distancia al frenar sobre superficies secas o mojadas. Mientras que, los polímeros de cadena larga, permiten liberar la energía absorbida, con mayor eficiencia a velocidades constantes para reducir la resistencia al rodar. Todo esto permite detenerse más rápido y mantenerse frío, ambas situaciones permiten una vida útil más larga y reducen el consumo de combustible.
La estructura interna posee correas gemelas de acero reforzadas con poliamida envuelto en espiral (mezcla de fibras de aramida sintética resistente al calor e hilo de nailon), para mejorar la calidad del andar al mismo tiempo de ajustar el área de contacto con flexibilidad vertical y rigidez lateral.
