Most shock absorbers are designed to offer a firmer ride OR to maximize ride comfort. And complete computerized systems can deliver both comfort and performance, but at too high a price for the average consumer's vehicle.

The KONI Special Active shock combines excellent road holding and handling characteristics with no-compromise comfort levels. It's a two-in-one solution from KONI that doesn't require the installation of sophisticated electronics, cables or sensors. Firmness for sporty driving on even road surfaces. Smoothness for a comfortable ride on uneven road surfaces.

KONI's patented Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) technology actively controls the damping level on the basis of the vehicle's body and suspension movement frequency. Special Active shocks are a smart suspension system that adjusts automatically and in a fraction of a second to road conditions and driving style.

How It Works

In standard shock absorbers the main damping characteristic is defined by the oil flow going through the piston assembly (1).

Combining it with the FSD feature (2), KONI added a special valve that controls an oil flow parallel to the one going through the piston rod (3). This parallel oil flow is closed by the FSD feature, giving a rise in damping force almost linear to the time that the piston is moving in one direction.

Put simply, the FSD feature is a hydraulic amplifier that delays the buildup of pressure. In some ways an extra tuning option has been created in order to get the best possible combination of handling and comfort.

Since it is an integrated part of the hydraulic valve system inside the damper, no additional cables, sensors or any other electronic devices are needed to operate a KONI Special Active damper. Read more in Damper Dynamics .

Fitment Note: Special Active dampers may not be compatible with lowering spring kits on some vehicles. If your vehicle has lowering springs, please contact a sales specialist before purchasing to confirm the fitment.

There's a reason I live 4 stop signs and 15 minutes from California's Highway 1. I take the backroads almost as often as I take the freeway.
These are the 2nd set of Koni FSDs I've owned. First set was on my 2002 Mini Cooper S R53 which replaced the Bilstein B4s which didn't have enough compliance. I replaced the rears only on my 2015 VW Golf Sportwagen which helped the twitchy rear end down. Happy with the Bilstein B6s on my 2017 eGolf.

I bought the Model 3 with 37k miles on it a year ago. Tesla blew it with the Model 3 suspension setup which is surprising since it's such an amazing car. The factory suspension is way too harsh. It crashed over Bots' dots. Any road that wasn't glass smooth was a nighmare, Interior panels buzzed from the unnecessary harshness. It was unpleasant to drive. A common retrofit for first generation Model 3s is to replace the springs and shocks with the second generation's which includes active shocks from the factory. I opted for the Konis as an economical alternative. A bargain once you factor in installation & alignment costs. Ouch. The difference was apparent in the first 200 feet leaving the shop. I rolled over a manhole cover and it didn't make its presence known. On the road home with checkered surface, it didn't feel like an ox cart and the interior was much quieter. Eliminated 90% of buzzing. It really is a joy to drive, now.
I like a firm suspension but you need compliance to smooth out the bumps and keep control. Think of a skier going downhill through a mogul field. Stiff legged, the skier is going to skim the tops of moguls and beat himself to death with little control. A skier that is soft legged, will keep control & contact with the surface, not work nearly as hard to get to the bottom.
I'll move to 18 inch rims and a 45 series tire with summer Michelin Pilot Sport S. I'd like a little softer ride, 40 series tires aren't for me. Pilots never squealed or stepped out in Mini even in the rain. Fabulous control, comfort.

I bought my 2016 mini cooper used with 126,000. It was the only manual transmission I could find. There was an annoying bonk coming from the rear suspension. I replaced the rear shocks and new shock mounts. The noise was definitely coming from the worn out mounts. Problem fixed and now have better shocks as well.
