The Potenza RE050A is a Max Performance Summer tire designed to complement the performance of sports cars, sports coupes and sport sedans. While the Potenza RE050 is used as Original Equipment on the supercharged Mercedes-Benz S55 AMG sedan, a Potenza RE050A Scuderia version is used on the 12-cylinder Enzo Ferrari supercar, and a Run Flat version is used on the BMW Z4 sports cars and 5-Series sedans. The Potenza RE050A was developed to provide good traction along with responsive and predictable dry and wet road handling. It is not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.

On the outside, the Potenza RE050A features a high grip tread compound molded into an asymmetric tread design. A continuous center rib, large tread blocks and stable shoulder elements provide responsive handling, high-speed stability and traction on dry roads, while circumferential and lateral tread grooves are aimed to pump water out from under the tire's footprint to minimize hydroplaning and aid wet traction. A continuous circumferential rib adjacent to the inside shoulder blocks enhances wear quality to help reduce noise throughout the life of the tire, especially on cars with alignment settings that specify negative camber. Internally, the Potenza RE050A features twin steel belts reinforced by spiral-wrapped nylon to stabilize the tread area and enhance handling, high speed capability and ride quality while minimizing weight. The fabric cord body and hard rubber sidewall filler help blend uniform ride quality with steering response and lateral stability.

Vehicles Used

2003 BMW 330Ci

It wasn’t that long ago that only the most exotic sports cars were equipped with Max Performance Summer tires as Original Equipment. But today, as more vehicles are coming with these tires right from the factory, combined with an expansion of sizes beyond OE within many of the tire lines, the availability of these Max Performance tires is growing into sizes for more everyday vehicles. This allows drivers of sports cars, coupes and sedans to choose from a growing range of tire "personalities," each capable of delivering maximum performance.

One of the most recent OE-derived Max Performance Summer tires to be expanded into a range of replacement sizes is the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A. Versions of this tire have been fitted to cars from BMW, Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz. To get an understanding of how this tire performs in the real world on vehicles driven everyday, we conducted a Real World Road Ride and Performance Track Drive comparing the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A with the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 and the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2.

We used 2003 BMW 330Ci coupes, and installed 225/45R17 tires mounted on 17x8" wheels. This is a common "Plus Zero" tire and wheel package for the 330Ci coupe, and a popular "Plus One" package for standard 3 Series BMWs. Our evaluation used new, full tread depth tires.

We also included a fourth 2003 BMW 330Ci fitted with the Original Equipment 205/50R17 Goodyear Eagle RS-A High Performance All-Season tires mounted on factory 17x7.0" wheels. We have included this vehicle/tire combination in other tire evaluations, and have found it helpful to have an OE-equipped vehicle to evaluate the impact of installing the other products in the test.

Goodyear Eagle RS-A

The Goodyear Eagle RS-A is a High Performance All-Season tire produced with several speed ratings and in a wide variety of sizes. Its design is heavily influenced by its use as an Original Equipment tire by BMW, Volkswagen, General Motors, Chrysler and others. The Eagle RS-A features a subtle asymmetric tread design with larger tread elements in the outside shoulder intended to deliver more responsive handling, cornering, and steering. Smaller tread blocks on the inside shoulder combined with wide tread and lateral grooves are intended to enhance wet and snow traction.

Out on the road, the Eagle RS-A exhibited good road manners, providing levels of ride comfort and road noise that were appropriate for tires in the High Performance All-Season tire category. While delivering more ride and noise comfort than the Max Performance Summer tires in this evaluation, the Eagle RS-A could not match the road handling and crisp steering response of the other tires tested.

On the track in the dry, the Eagle RS-A offered handling that was appropriate for tires in the High Performance All-Season tire category. While the Eagle RS-A has proven it delivers respectable performance when compared to other tires in its category, it could not match the sure-footed feel or quick average lap times of the other three tires in this evaluation.

Under wet conditions, the Eagle RS-A High Performance All-Season tire proved to be at an even bigger disadvantage over the Max Performance tires in this test. It posted an average lap time 1.9 seconds behind the first-place Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3.

Bridgestone Potenza RE050A

The Potenza RE050A is a Max Performance Summer tire originally designed to complement the performance of the supercharged Mercedes-Benz S55 AMG sedan, the Enzo Ferrari Supercar (as a Scuderia version), and the BMW Z4 sports cars and 5-Series sedans (as a Runflat version). Since its introduction as Original Equipment on these performance vehicles, the Potenza RE050A line has been expanded to include more sizes, designed to provide good traction along with responsive and predictable dry and wet road handling for many of today’s sports cars, coupes and sport sedans.

The Potenza RE050A features a high grip tread compound molded into an asymmetric tread design, where a continuous center rib, large tread blocks and stable shoulder elements provide responsive handling, high-speed stability and traction on dry roads. Circumferential and lateral tread grooves are aimed to pump water out from under the tire’s footprint to minimize hydroplaning and aid wet traction. Internally, the Potenza RE050A features twin steel belts reinforced by spiral-wrapped nylon to stabilize the tread area and enhance handling, high-speed capability and ride quality while minimizing weight. The fabric cord body and hard rubber sidewall filler help blend ride quality with steering response and lateral stability.

During the Real World Road Ride on the roads and highways surrounding our headquarters, the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A displayed sporty road manners, feeling nimble and very responsive. The tradeoff was a ride that was somewhat firmer over the sharper bumps and expansion joints than the other Max Performance tires in the test. Noise level was not objectionable, and rated as appropriate for a tire in this category.

On our dry handling track, the crisp handling of the Potenza RE050A received good marks by our team, and felt responsive and easy to drive. The Potenza RE050A did not offer quite as much lateral grip around the skid pad as the other two Max Performance tires, however.

Under wet conditions, the Potenza RE050A again felt very responsive, and was easy to drive. It again did not have quite as much wet grip as the other two Max Performance tires in this test, finishing a close third for average overall lap time.

Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3

The Eagle F1 GS-D3 Max Performance Summer tire was developed in Europe for driving enthusiasts around the world who want more performance from their factory stock or aftermarket tuned sports cars, sporty coupes and performance sedans.

On the outside, Eagle F1 GS-D3 tires feature Goodyear’s AAtrax tread compound molded into a distinctive, highly directional tread design. The OneTRED design combines three distinct patterns in the tread design to enhance dry and wet performance. First, a solid and continuous center zone maintains constant road contact to enhance straight-line tracking and initial steering response. Next, sweeping intermediate ribs emulate racing slicks by delivering shoulder-to-shoulder tread contact to further enhance steering response and dry road cornering traction.

The sweeping aquachannel grooves, which are three times longer than the tire’s contact patch, angle forward and out to the edges of the tread to avoid trapping air and water to reduce noise while enhancing wet traction and hydroplaning resistance. Finally, the intermediate ribs flow into the shoulder area to form long, stable shoulder blocks to grip the road during cornering and help resist the wear associated with aggressive driving.

Internally, steel belts are reinforced with spirally wound nylon to distribute the vehicle’s load across the tire’s footprint to provide high-speed durability and uniform ride qualities. Slightly angled body ply construction with high ply turn-ups enhance steering precision and high-speed stability.

On the road, the Eagle F1 GS-D3 felt responsive and sporty. We were not able to evaluate long-term wear characteristics, or the potential some highly directional tires have to develop noise-generating, irregular wear. While the Eagle F1 GS-D3 generated somewhat more tread noise than the Original Equipment tire, it was not found to be objectionable by our team.

On the test track in the dry, the Eagle F1 GS-D3 was praised for its handling and overall grip around the skidpad. When driven at the limit, this tire provided a broad, comfortable window to work in, making it easy to drive aggressively. Steering response was good, but not quite as crisp as the other two Max Performance Summer tires in this test.

On the wet track, the Eagle F1 GS-D3 just edged out the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 for the fastest average overall lap time, and scored well for cornering stability and predictability, providing confidence and plenty of traction in the higher speed corners. The aggressive, highly directional tread pattern was not challenged by the water level of our wet test, which is not designed to evaluate hydroplaning resistance.

Michelin Pilot Sport PS2

The Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 Max Performance Summer tire was initially developed for use as Original Equipment on some of the world’s most prestigious sports cars and sports sedans by combining world-class wet and dry handling with confident and predictable cornering. Some of the first fitments include the BMW Alpina Z8, Chrysler Crossfire, McLaren SLR and Porsche GT2 and GT3 models.

The Pilot Sport PS2 tire features advances in performance, wear, durability, and comfort thanks to Michelin’s patented C3M manufacturing technology, a highly advanced production process that allows for extremely precise placement of a wider variety of tire components than ever before. The Pilot Sport PS2 tread features two different rubber compounds across their treads. A hybrid silica/carbon black compound begins at the tire’s outer shoulder and continues across the tread until it joins a high-silica compound that continues to the tire’s inside shoulder. Each of these tread compounds is specifically formulated for its location to optimize dry and wet handling resulting in crisp, predictable cornering and increased wear and high-speed durability. Additionally, these high grip tread compounds are molded into an asymmetric design with large outer shoulder blocks along with continuous intermediate and center ribs (similar to that of Michelin’s Formula One tires) to enhance steering response and cornering stability. The tread design also features wide circumferential grooves and lateral notches that help channel water through the footprint to enhance wet road traction. On the inside, the tread design is supported by two, high-tensile, lightweight steel cord belts that are further reinforced by size-optimized, precisely placed, individual Aramid/nylon hybrid filaments. These Aramid/nylon hybrid filaments replace the old bands of nylon to bring the Pilot Sport PS2 to a new level of manufacturing and design-tuning precision. This precision allows the Pilot Sport PS2 to provide improved steering response and resistance to distortion while enhancing ride quality and high speed durability.

During the road portion of our evaluation, the Pilot Sport PS2 displayed taut road feel and provided crisp steering response. This did cause the Pilot Sport PS2 to feel just a little firmer than the other two Max Performance tires over the sharper bumps and expansion joints. On coarser concrete and asphalt surfaces, the Pilot Sport PS2 generated some additional tread noise, although our team did not find ride comfort and noise levels to be objectionable.

Out on the dry test track, the Pilot Sport PS2 delivered a strong performance, offering very good handling and turning the fastest average overall lap time of the test. Steering response was sharp without feeling nervous, and felt stable in the higher-speed, sweeping corners. The Pilot Sport PS2 felt predictable, and easy to control at the limit.

In the wet, the Pilot Sport PS2 also proved to be fast, nearly matching the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 for best average overall lap time. While the Eagle F1 GS-D3 felt slightly more stable around the fast, sweeping curve of the skidpad, the Pilot Sport PS2 offered moderately sharper steering response and provided driver confidence in the fast transitions of the slalom and hard 90-degree corners around the track.

Customers Say

Feedback consistently shows the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A delivers excellent dry traction (8-10 ratings dominate) with sharp steering response and confident cornering, living up to its Max Performance Summer billing. Wet traction also earns strong praise (7-10 range), though a few note reduced grip in heavy rain. Ride comfort receives mixed feedback-many appreciate its sporty feel, while others call it harsh on rough roads. Treadwear is a common concern, with scores often dipping to 2-5, as drivers report faster wear than expected for aggressive summer use. Ideal for enthusiasts prioritizing dry/wet performance over long-term durability, but less suited for those seeking a plush ride or extended mileage.

...Wet traction is a must for South Florida drivers and I feel 100% confident driving in the rainiest weather...

These came as OE tires on my new GTI. The first thing I noticed was how great they gripped. Absolutely no tire squeeling, even with spirited driving! Wet traction is a must for South Florida drivers and I feel 100% confident driving on these tires even in the rainiest weather. Noise level can be improved. Theyre not so bad in normal city driving but can get a bit loud on the highway. Overall, I give the Potenzas a 9/10!

...Very good qualities in the rain. I have no ABS or stabilty control on the Porsche and hauling down from 210Kph to a 70Kph corner in the wet is fun. These tires did very well...

Only used on the track and while teaching at driving schools. Predictable tire, they telegraphed what was going to happen next. Very consistent lap after lap. I never pushed them to the point where I was running laps beyond their co-efficient of friction so I can not comment on their consistency and predictabilty at or beyond those levels. Very good qualities in the rain. I have no ABS or stabilty control on the Porsche and hauling down from 210Kph to a 70Kph corner in the wet is fun. These tires did very well.

For a street tire they do the trick. If I wanted to go faster I would go back to R- compound tires but then I always had to take a 2nd set of rim/tires to the track. These tires were a great compromise, especially when you consider the cost.

...They responded beautifully in the dry, and on a hot summer day, these tires really shined. They were very predictable and driver input was instantly transferred to the pavement...

The Potenzas came with my car from the factory on my 2008 Nissan 350Z Touring and I expected to get about 25,000 miles out of them, based on previous experience with tire wear on sports cars. In that regard, these did not quite live up to my expectations. At 20,000 miles, I had 2/32" of tread left and they were ready to go.

The good:
There was no breaking in period with these tires. They responded beautifully in the dry, and on a hot summer day, these tires really shined. They were very predictable and driver input was instantly transferred to the pavement.

The bad:
As for how they handled in the wet, they were far less forgiving. These tires hydroplaned like crazy, and I never trusted them to take a corner fast when it was wet outside. Because of this, I would rate them only as average for a summer tire. When it got cold out, they were fairly miserable to drive around in - I was consistently experiencing wheel spin when the temperature dropped to near freezing. Being summer tires, they obviously were never driven in the snow. I would expect that in the snow, driving with these tires would be suicidal.

The ugly:
Given how over-priced they are for what they offer, I'd recommend you give these a skip and go with something else. When I took the wheels off prior to having my new tires mounted, I noticed that the two tires on the passenger side had de-laminated and were bulging. Another thousand miles or so and they would probably have popped. The only other brand of tires this ever happened to me with was Goodyear, and I have zero confidence in anything they produce. My confidence with Bridgestone is higher, but only slightly. Finally, I want to comment on comfort and noise. These tires are very stiff, so there was almost no comfort, but if you drive a sports car, you don't expect that. They were also extremely noisy, even from day one. They were probably the noisiest tire I've ever owned.

I hope this review helps someone.

Recently mounted the RE050As on my M3/4. Great tire! Smooth, quiet, outstanding handling and stick. I run 8.5 wide stock rears all around with 235/40-17s (RE050As are wider than most 235/40-17s). Will do follow-up review after instructing at a drivers school--although Im sure they will perform on track as I expect--outstandingly!

...Dry traction is superb and very predictable, and you are warned by a distinct howl when they are about to lose grip. Changes direction with minimal sidewall flex and is not THAT noisy for a low profile sporty tire...

I try to heat cycle my new tires to make them last longer, but I really feel the RE050A's are built to take the abuse of spirited and downright aggressive driving. Dry traction is superb and very predictable, and you are warned by a distinct howl when they are about to lose grip. Changes direction with minimal sidewall flex and is not THAT noisy for a low profile sporty tire. The real difference is noticeable in the wet, though. The RE050A hydroplanes far less than the competition and displaces water very well. I have friends that swear by Pirelli and Michelin but these Bridgestones are just as worthy. However, a noticeable drop in grip occurred at 25% tread depth...for me at least. I had them on my '07 350Z too and with 2nd gear burnouts, donuts, and many hard launches my rears reached the wear bars at 9800mi when I got rid of it. If I don't get try the RE01R's I will replace the RE050A's with the same.

...Ride comfort is way better then I was expecting. Nothing harsh about the ride at all...

I have an 2001 Accord Ex that was due for some new rubber. It came stock with Michelin P195/65 R15. I decided to get new rims and tires because I wasnt happy with the performance of the stock tires.

I jumped up to 17" rims. I got the Potenza RE050A in 205/50-17. OMG!!! These tires are awesome. They handle like they are on rails. Ride comfort is way better then I was expecting. Nothing harsh about the ride at all. They are sticky right out of the box and grip very well in the wet. No noise from the tires as they are still new. Will update in a month or two. Im not planning any track days. I drive mostly hightway and city. You will not go wrong with fitting these to your car.

...Ride quality remains excellent. These are quiet and smooth tires when driven on acceptly paved roads...

The RE050As in 235/40-17s newly mounted on stock 8.5 x 17 M Double Spoke II M3 rims on 3-Mar-06. Its now 8-Apr-06, and Ive put 1025 miles on the tires. Ride quality remains excellent. These are quiet and smooth tires when driven on acceptly paved roads. Dry and wet stick are amazing. My M3/4 has a Dinan airbox/exhaust/Conforti ECU reflash, netting 15 more hp than stock (to 255). With the ASC off and nailing the throttle in the wet, the car just accelerates briskly without drama. In a downpour, the tires are confidence-inspiring. Dry stick limits are far too high to test on the public roads--Im looking forward to doing a couple of drivers education track weekends with these tires to safely test the performance envelope. One criticism I have are the RE050As need for a rebalance at this low mileage. Newly mounted the tires needed very few weights to balance. After 1000 miles, I had vibration problems at 90+ mph speeds. Ive recently had the RE050As rebalanced, and hopefully the tires will settle in better. Overall Ive been very happy with the purchase. Im hoping for at least 12K to 15K miles before replacing them with another set.

...On the road they remain quiet and smooth...

Just finished up my third drivers education event this season with 3959 miles on my 235/40-17 RE050A tires mounted on 8.5x17 BMW M3 wheels all around at Putnam Park Road Course (dry conditions, 80-F ambient temps). Tires are stickiest, 17 minutes into the session; the last 8 minutes, the tires begin to overheat, and grip falls off (and slip angles increase dramatically). The overheating is worse when carrying student passengers (tires overheat 15 minutes into the session). Despite the limitations of nonR-compound tires for open lapping, the Bridgestone RE050As continue to impress not only myself (the driver), but onlookers who are surprised to find that Im running regular road tires (instead of stickier R-compound tires). The RE050As breakaway characteristics are forgiving with plenty of aural warning of how much grip is available. On the road they remain quiet and smooth. I still have a slight vibration at some speeds--and will need a BMW-specific wheel balancing job. Wear seems appropriate for use--Im hoping for 5000 more miles before buying another set of five (I rotate the spare into service as well). Im not sure how much better the Pole Position version of these tires will be--as Im quite happy with the regular RE050As! At driving events, I wear a "Bridgestone" F1 Grand Prix winners cap to show pride in these tires.

...This tire wears VERY fast and is extremely noisy...

OEM Tire for the G35 Sport Sedan. This tire wears VERY fast and is extremely noisy. Overall grip and responsiveness are quite good, especially when new and when the temperature is between 60 - 85 degrees. Wet traction is okay at best, and tire resists hydroplaning quite nicely as it frequently rains in the Seattle metro area and the freeways are full of ruts that fill up with water late at night or early in the morning when traffic is minimal. Compared to my Michelin Pilot Sport AS all-season tires that I use from late Fall to Spring, they would be a fine choice for year-round driving if one wanted a single tire option for the G35. Since I have a set of chrome wheels for use in the Spring/Summer season, I stick with a summer performance tire for that set and may choose the Pilot Sport or Eagle F1 Asymmetric this Spring as the Potenza's are pretty much done for.
