The Firehawk GT w/UNI-T is Firestone's High Performance All-Season tire developed for sporty performance sedans and coupes. The Firehawk GT is designed to allow drivers to feel the freedom of the road by blending long treadwear and responsive handling with dependable traction on dry and wet roads, as well as in light snow.

Firestone's UNI-T Technology focuses on three primary tire components, the beads, casing and tread, which influence overall performance by enhancing comfort, handling and traction. On the outside, the Firehawk GT molds a long wearing, high-silica tread compound into an asymmetric tread design that features large outside shoulder blocks to enhance steering response and cornering stability. Inside shoulder blocks feature more lateral grooves and sipes to provide the additional biting edges that aid traction in foul weather. The Firehawk GT radial's continuous center ribs enhance responsiveness, as well as wet and dry traction when accelerating or braking. The entire tread design features Firestone's Veri-pitch sequencing of block shapes and sizes to help reduce tread pattern noise. The Firehawk GT's structure includes twin, steel belts reinforced by spirally wrapped nylon to enhance driving control and provide long, even treadwear while minimizing weight and enhancing ride quality. A polyester cord body and hard rubber sidewall reinforcements enhance steering response and cornering stability.

Vehicles Used

2006 BMW E90 325i Sedan

Refreshed to address the year-round driving needs of today’s performance enthusiasts who may encounter intermittent light snow, the new Firehawk GT w/UNI-T High Performance All-Season tire line reestablishes the Firehawk GT name in Firestone’s family of performance tires. Designed to allow drivers to feel the freedom of the road, the new Firehawk GT blends long treadwear and responsive handling with traction on dry and wet roads, as well as in light snow.

In order to confirm how the new Firehawk GT tires measure up to some of today’s other High Performance All-Season tires, we compared the V-speed rated Firestone Firehawk GT to the V-speed rated BFGoodrich Traction T/A, Dunlop SP Sport Signature and Yokohama AVID V4s tires.

Our evaluation used 2006 BMW 325i E90 sedans, with new, full tread depth 205/55R16-sized tires mounted on 16x7.5" wheels.

What We Learned on the Road

Our 5.6-mile loop of expressway, state highway and county roads provides a great variety of road conditions that include city and highway speeds, smooth and coarse concrete, as well as new and patched asphalt. This route allows our team to experience noise comfort, ride quality and everyday handling, just as you would during your drive to school or work.

All four tires in our test delivered on their promise of responsive handling with comfortable road manners. As in previous tests, the Yokohama AVID V4s received praise for its comfortable ride and relatively low noise level, especially along the rough expressway section. Dunlop’s Signature Sport was not far behind, also delivering a smooth ride and scoring well with our team. The BFGoodrich Traction T/A and Firestone Firehawk GT both displayed acceptable ride comfort, while generating minimal but noticeable tread and impact noise over the course sections of our test drive.

At normal road speeds, the handling scores for the Traction T/A and Firehawk GT were a virtual tie, feeling crisp and delivering quick response to the driver’s input. The Signature Sport also handled well, with slightly slower initial response to steering inputs than the BFGoodrich or Firestone tires. The AVID V4s counter-balanced its advantage in ride comfort with a small reduction in responsiveness versus the other tires.

What We Learned on the Test Track

Our 1/3-mile per lap test track course includes 90-degree street corners, lane changes and simulated expressway ramps. Run in both dry and wet conditions, the test track allows our team to experience the traction, responsiveness, handling and drivability normally only encountered during abrupt emergency avoidance maneuvers or competition events.

In dry conditions, the Dunlop Signature Sport felt very responsive and nimble, slicing its way through the lane change/slalom and around the tight corners. Subjectively the overall grip level didn’t feel as though it equaled the tire’s responsiveness, but this didn’t hold back our team as this tire drove its way to the quickest overall lap time of this test. Very close behind was the Firestone Firehawk GT, which delivered stable cornering and balanced handling. The BFGoodrich Traction T/A was also easy to control at the limit, but lacked the ultimate grip needed to post the quickest lap time. Just like on the road, the trade-off in handling for ride comfort impacted the Yokohama AVID V4s’ handling. Overall grip felt quite good, while steering response and cornering lacked some of the precision and stability of the Dunlop and Firestone tires.

In the wet we usually see larger differences between tires. In this case, however, the differences were not as big as often seen in past tests. Only 4/10th second separated the fastest to slowest tire, showing how close all four tires are to each other. In the wet, the BFGoodrich tire lead the way with the quickest overall lap time, fastest time through the slalom transition and highest steady-state cornering (average g-forces). The Yokohama lapped our course only 2/10ths behind, where its somewhat slower responsiveness and soft handling in the dry proved to aid feel and driver confidence in the wet by providing plenty of feedback and controllability at the limit. The responsive steering of the Dunlop resulted in a somewhat edgy feel in the wet. In close fourth place overall was the Firestone Firehawk GT, which didn’t quite have the wet grip displayed by the other tires.

Customers Say

Customers think the Firestone Firehawk GT delivers excellent dry traction (7-10 scores dominate) with responsive handling, making it a strong performer in its high-performance all-season category. Wet traction also earns praise for reliable grip, though a few note reduced confidence in heavy rain. Comfort receives mixed feedback-some highlight a smooth ride, while others criticize road noise as intrusive. Treadwear is a common concern, with many reporting faster-than-expected wear (scores as low as 0-2). While dry and wet performance shine, buyers prioritizing long-term durability may want to weigh the trade-offs against the tire's strong on-road dynamics.

...Wet traction is great. I have never experienced hydroplaning with these. They have great Wet/Dry Traction...

I have bought these tires for three of my cars. They are great for sporty driving and for Amazing traction. I have had many cars and bought many different brands of tires, but these are far superior to most all of them. I feel much safer driving on these tires. Cornering is Excellent. Wet traction is also great. I have never experienced hydroplaning with these. They have great Wet/Dry Traction. I have bought them for a Cadillac CTS, a Mercedes CLK320, and now my Grand Prix. I would never buy or trust another set of tires for me or my family. Tread life is Excellent. I drive many miles per year(around 30,000 or so) and these tires really last! I can not say enough good stuff about them. Have not driven in snow or ice yet with them, but I wouldn't doubt there safety in either.

...wet traction was not bad as well. Hydroplaning resistance was decent...

This tire for my type car was absolutely horrid for driving in snow! Almost uncontrollable on freshly plowed streets. I felt like I was on pure ice! I have driven many miles in the snow over he years with plenty of different vehicles and this was the worst experience ever! These tires did not wear very well. After about 20,000 miles they started to get real noisy. On the up side, they did have very good dry traction and handled corners very well. I felt the ride was a bit stiff but steering response was very good. Also, wet traction was not bad as well. Hydroplaning resistance was decent.

Overall this tire is not to bad for summer use but you might want to purchase winter tires if you drive a lot in the snow.

...Handling and responsiveness are much better; freeway entry ramps with curves that I could once only take at 40mph I can now maintain 45-50mph. Additionally it's not as uncomfortable going around roundabouts as it use to be...

I have only had theses tires for about 5000 miles but they are a dramatic improvement over the OEM Michelin MXV4's that came on the car. The noise level on these tires is minimal at best, and I have noticed no decrease in my MPG. Tread wear remains to be seen, but anything can be better than the Michelins (20,000 miles and it was over). Handling and responsiveness are much better; freeway entry ramps with curves that I could once only take a 40mph I can now maintain 45-50mph. Additionally it's not as uncomfortable going around roundabouts as it use to be. So far so good, I would defiantly recommend this tire. The price was also very reasonable taking into account its comparables, if you are willing to get pass the "Firestone stigma".

...Quiet, responsive, good traction, wear reasonably, look good, ride smooth, brake well, and corner well...

These were original equipment with my Challenger Rallye Redline. I've never been a huge fan of Firestone, as I generally buy Michelins. However, these Firestones are impressive. Quiet, responsive, good traction, wear reasonably, look good, ride smooth, brake well, and corner well. I can't ask for much more. I'll be interested in how they do in the snow, although I don't expect to drive a Challenger in the snow much anyway. So far, I'd consider putting an identical set of tires on when this set wears out.

...Nice dry handling and steering response compared to the grand touring tires that came on the car...

Very nice all around tire. Better than any comparable Bridgestone I've ever owned. Nice dry handling and steering response compared to the grand touring tires that came on the car. I don't drive them much in snow because I have snow tires, but when I did, they worked as well as any other all season tire I've driven on.

The grip well in rain. I like the braking stabilty and grip. The only thing I've noticed with them after driving them about 18 months is that they are getting louder. But that's a common trait of performance tires I've owned.

...Absolute junk in the snow. Just trying to move on even the smallest amount of snow leaves you spinning...

The tires came as OEM on my 2014 Charger. As another user posted in their review, seemed smooth as glass first 1500 miles or so. After that they ran with a slight vibration and have gotten a bit noisier on anything but the smoothest of roads. Seems like you can feel every nook and mark in the road through the gas pedal and wheel. Absolute junk in the snow. Just trying to move on even the smallest amount of snow leaves you spinning. The Dry performance has been outstanding though. Car does move like it is on rails and sticks to the ground.

I'm not totally anti Firestone as I've had them on other cars and they have been fine. In fact I'm probably going to order the Firestone WinterForce tires very soon.

These are probably decent 3 season tire but due to the vibrations and zero performance in the least amount of white stuff I'll be looking for a different company in the spring

...I attempted to drive in light snow only 1x - it's not an option for these tires...

This was the factory tire on my newly purchased 2014 Chrysler 300S. This tire rides fair but the wet traction is absolutely terrible. Even when the tires were new the car hydroplaned easily. I attempted to drive in light snow only 1x - it's not an option for these tires. So now at 30,000 - the tires are nearly bald. My driving style in this V-6 is relaxed. My last vehicle had 70,000 miles on the tires when I traded it and there was still plenty of tread remaining.

To sum it up:
Terrible wet traction
snow driving impossible
they wear out in early

there are way better choices from Michelin and Pirelli

I purchased these to replace the OEM Pirelli Scorpions due to the noise, treadwear, etc. This was recommended by Tire Rack and a local tire dealer (I purchased from Tire Rack) While they were quieter initially, they are getting noisier, but not to the extent of the Pirelli's. My problem with them is that they make the ride "bouncier" hard to define other than that. The car also skips when it hits a bump ever since these tires were installed. Air pressure, etc. is as recommended. I would not recommend these tires for that alone.

...The Firehawk GT's feel like I'm driving a completely different car, so much smoother and tons more quiet. The difference in ride quality is remarkable...

I had to replace my OEM Bridgestone Potenzas after a mere 18K miles because they became incredibly noisy and had lost most of their tread. Although I just recently installed the Firehawk GT's, the difference is night and day between the lousy Potenzas. The Firehawk GT's feel like I'm driving a completely different car, so much smoother and tons more quiet. The difference in ride quality is remarkable. I only have 100 miles on the GT's thus far but it's been an amazing early run.

...Third was how quickly the tread lost depth...

This tire was recommended by the salesman at the store I purchased them from. He really made them sound awesome. The tire was not a good choice for my vehicle, but was a good sale commission for him. Over the life of these tires, first thing I noticed was a drastic drop in fuel efficiency. Second thing was noise. Third was how quickly the tread lost depth. For my car, the tires were so loud, that after a qualified mechanic has replaced a wheel bearing, the test drove the car, then checked all the other wheel bearings. The noise of the tires was much like the noise of a bad wheel bearing. I didn't want to be disappointed, however I was. I have replaced them with the Yokohama AVID ENVigor. Where have they been all my life!!

...Only have about 500 miles on the new Firehawk GTs but so far they meet my need for a quiet tire...

I put these on my wifes 04 Lincoln LS to replace the OE Continental Contact Sports. Cannot tell you if the Contis were the worst tire Ive ever had on a car but they came mighty close. Lousy treadwear, essentially shot at 29,000 miles and so noisy that a 40 mile drive on the freeway gave you a headache.

Only have about 500 miles on the new Firehawk GTs but so far they meet my need for a quiet tire. Have not noticed and tread squirming, only driven them once inthe rain and no complaints.

Came to about $100 per tire mounted, balanced, and sales tax.

So far, so good.
