Vehicles Used

2004 Volkswagen V6 Touareg SUV

It wasn’t all that long ago that pickup trucks were reserved for the workaday life and SUVs ("Jeeps") were for park rangers or off-road enthusiasts. Today, in addition to these traditional occupations, we see a wide array of SUVs chosen as the primary family vehicle, and pickup trucks regularly used for a night on the town.

To better match how and where many of today’s SUV and pickup truck drivers use their vehicles, tire manufacturers are developing premium Crossover/SUV Touring All-Season and Highway All-Season tires that combine the rugged sidewall styling of all-terrain tires with the refined road manners of passenger tires. As an added benefit, many of these newer tire designs are also benefiting from the latest in compounding and construction technologies, formerly reserved for high-end passenger and sports car tires.

To find out how several of these tires perform on the variety of roads surrounding our Indiana headquarters, the Tire Rack Team conducted a Real World Road ride comparing the Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza, Goodyear Fortera H/L Edition and Michelin Cross Terrain SUV. Our evaluation used three identically equipped 2004 Volkswagen V6 Touareg SUVs with the factory steel spring suspension, fitted with new 235/65R17 tires mounted on 17x7.5" wheels.

Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza

The Dueler H/L Alenza with UNI-T or UNI-T AQII is Bridgestone’s Crossver/SUV Touring All-Season tire that was developed for the drivers of premium, luxury sport utility vehicles. The Dueler H/L Alenza is designed to provide elegance with an edge, as well as year-round traction, even in light snow.

All Dueler H/L Alenza sizes feature Bridgestone’s UNI-T technology to increase comfort and control. In order to further enhance wet traction, select sizes have Bridgestone’s UNI-T AQII technology which features dual layer tread compounds to resist the normal tread rubber hardening that results from the heat encountered during thousands of miles of use. As the tire wears, the special underlying high-grip rubber is exposed, helping offset the effects of wear and age on wet traction. The result is that UNI-T AQ II helps handle wet road conditions even as the tire wears. Our 235/65R17 test size features UNI-T AQ II technology.

On the outside, the symmetric tread pattern of the Dueler H/L Alenza has been ride and noise tuned to enhance comfort. Large shoulder blocks and a continuous center rib aid responsiveness and highway stability, while wide circumferential grooves, lateral notches and sipes help increase stormy weather traction. On the inside, twin steel belts (reinforced with spirally wound nylon for H-speed rated sizes) provide support under the tread area, while polyester cords stabilize the sidewalls and enhance ride quality.

Across the variety of road surfaces and driving speeds, the Dueler H/L Alenza received good marks for ride quality and noise comfort, both of which were rated as an improvement over the original Dueler H/L D683 version. In our instrumented stopping distance test, the Dueler H/L Alenza performed well under dry conditions. Stopping performance in the wet was competitive with the other tires. Because our evaluation uses new, full tread depth tires, we were not able to evaluate the long-term impact of Bridgestone’s UNI-T AQ II technology on the wet traction, which has usually shown an increasing advantage as the tire wears and ages.

Goodyear Fortera H/L Edition

The Goodyear Fortera HL Edition is a premium Highway All-Season light truck tire that was developed to provide refined ruggedness for luxury sport utility vehicles, and a quiet, even ride along with overall responsiveness.

The Fortera HL features a long-wearing tread compound molded into a tread design that enhances traction and ride comfort while reducing noise levels. Staggered circumferential grooves and curvilinear sipes and grooves are integrated into the tread design to provide the biting edges that enhance year round traction, even in light snow. The tire’s shoulder design and sidewall appearance offer rugged good looks to complement the vehicle’s image. Internally, the Fortera HL uses a computer-optimized tire shape to reduce footprint sensitivity to load to provide an excellent balance of performance properties for lightly loaded to fully loaded sport utility vehicles (when properly inflated and within the vehicle’s approved load limits). Its twin steel belts and two-ply polyester cord body help provide predictable handling while enhancing ride comfort.

During our road ride, the Goodyear Fortera H/L Edition provided a good blend of road handling and comfort, but was not rated first in class in either of these areas. Dry stopping capability was competitive with the other tires. In our wet stopping distance test, the Fortera H/L required less distance to stop from 50 mph than the other two tires.

Michelin Cross Terrain SUV

Featured in the well known TV commercial starring the Mr. Bib bobblehead, the Michelin Cross Terrain SUV tire is a premium Highway All-Season light truck tire designed to complement the way most Americans drive their sport utility vehicles, by combining the looks of a light truck tire with the low noise and ride comfort associated with a luxury car tire.

The Cross Terrain SUV features a silica-enhanced tread compound molded into a tread design optimized for car-like ride comfort and responsiveness in dry, wet and wintry conditions. The tire’s sidewall offers a rugged appearance to complement the vehicle’s image while its continuous shoulder tread ribs maximize wear qualities while minimizing noise levels. Full depth, interlocking zigzag sipes are integrated into the tread design to provide the extra biting edges that enhance year round traction and driving confidence in light snow. Internally, the Cross Terrain SUV features twin steel belts, a two-ply polyester cord body and Michelin’s Bead Tension Structure to increase ride comfort and provide predictable handling.

Out on our road ride the Cross Terrain SUV offered responsive handling for a very connected feel, along with appropriate levels of ride comfort. Some team members found the level of tread noise to be slightly higher than the other two tires in this evaluation. Dry and wet stopping distances were competitive with the Dueler H/L Alenza and Fortera H/L Edition, but in both cases was a close third place.

...The Fortera stick with the road and have demonstrated that they will be there for me even in the rain.

Remove the Goodyear RT/S that came with the vehicle and it handle much much better. Even with such a heavy vehicle, the old tires would hydroplain all the time. The Fortera stick with the road and have demonstrated that they will be there for me even in the rain. Just finished a 2500 mile road trip through the Sierras, the Mohave and then up the windy Pacific coast highway without a hitch. There ride and handling were so much better than the RT/S that when I first put them on I had to relearn what I could do in the vehicle. Would buy them a gain in a second.

...Totally stable in the rain...

Stock Eagles on the Grand Cherokee were scary in the rain. After reading other comments here, got the Fortera HLs. Wow, what a difference! Totally stable in the rain, good in the snow, so quiet on the highway that my friends asked if I got a new SUV when they rode in it after changing tires. Best buy I ever made and saved about $500 getting them thru Tirerack instead of Goodyear.

Bought these tires when the factory Wranglers finally gave out. Was really thinking about getting a replacement set, but read other testimonials on this site from Fortera owners, and changed my mind. I have never looked back. Shortly after buying these tires I took a trip across Pennsylvania in driving rain that had other vehicles pulled over to the side of the highway. The traction I got from these Forteras was amazing. Never lost the feel of the road. After 10,000 miles they still look great and theres bags of treadlife left. My off road driving is in the "sugar-sands" of the NJ pine barrens, where its really easy to get stuck. The tread on these tires, while less aggressive than that of the Wranglers, has never let me down when Im tooling around in the pines.

This winter, we had some decent snow (5-8" in a single storm). I was out several times ahead of the plows and never had a problem.

But most of my driving is very much On-Road. Theyre quiet and responsive. They provide a lot of control. I have remained very happy with my buying decision.

...During one of my three round trips, I hit three blizzards while going over mountains, with snow and slush 4-6 inches deep, while towing that heavy trailer. These tires performed admirably, never losing traction, and maintaining steering control perfectly.

This tire was standard on my 2014 Durango Citadel, and the first time I've ever had Goodyear tires. The first 2 years of driving was mostly highway and towing a cargo trailer weighing 7,200 pounds. Towing is particularly hard on tires, especially when going over the Rockies on trips between California and Minnesota. During one of my three round trips, I hit three blizzards while going over mountains, with snow and slush 4 -6 inches deep, while towing that heavy trailer. These tires performed admirably, never losing traction, and maintaining steering control perfectly. Of course, All Wheel Drive helps as well.

They are now about 50% worn, and still have great traction in wet and flooded street conditions. It will be interesting to see how they perform in snow this year, being worn down as they are. Still, 50% wear at over 38,500 miles isn't bad in my book.

I use 4WD only when needed and the Forteras grip unplowed streets with no slippage at all...

I have 7000 miles so far on P265/75R16 Fortera HLs with no signs of any treadwear at all. I stayed with Goodyear after getting 78,000 miles on OEM Wrangler RSAs. I compared the Forteras to Michelen Cross Terrains and LTXs and couldnt justify the extra cost of the Michelens. Ride noise is greatly reduced over stock, wet traction is much, much better (expected), and snow traction is better. I use 4WD only when needed and the Forteras grip unplowed streets with no slippage at all. Im on-road 100% of the time and wanted a smoother, more quiet ride than the Wranglers and the Forteras deliver comletely. The tires still look aggressive due to the size, but they ride like a dream. My only complaint is that part of the sidewall is covered with tiny little grooves (appearance only) that make it difficult to wipe tire protectant on and off evenly. I would highly recommend this tire to full-size p/u and SUV drivers to tame the normally harsh ride of these trucks.

...I had to make an evasive manuever at 60 mph with the Fortera and the truck steered precisely and stayed upright with minimal body lean... The Fortera has grippier traction in wet or dry conditions compared to the Eagle LS...

What can I say... these are a tremendous improvement over the OEM Eagle LS tires. The biggest noticeable difference is the handling. The Fortera keeps the Jeep upright even during the sharpest turn. The Eagles have rounded edges which make the Jeep lean too much for my comfort zone. I had to make an evasive manuever at 60 mph with the Fortera and the truck steered precisely and stayed upright with minimal body lean. I have made sharp turns with the Eagle LS and the truck gets swishy. I really think the Forteras saved me from an accident. The Fortera has grippier traction in wet or dry conditions compared to the Eagle LS. The Fortera is extremely quiet. Just as quiet, if not quieter, than the Eagle LS. Snow is no problem for these tires. I drove the Jeep in 6"-8" of snow with no problem as long as I took it slow. I also feel that my stopping distance has been shortened due to the grippy tires but thats my opinion. If you are looking for a replacement for the LS then I dont think you will be disappointed with the Fortera.

...The tires are amazing in dry cornering...

Replaced the OEM Goodyear RTS tires, after considering Michelins, based on positive comments on Tire Rack survey. Having had Goodyears for so long on Jeeps, I was worried about Goodyears ability to make a competitive tire, but I have been pleasantly surprised. The tires are amazing in dry cornering, and based on the few chances so far to try them out in the rain, they appear to be excellent in the rain as well. The RTS tires had become scary in the wet, but everythings back to normal (and better than the RTSs ever were) with the Forteras.

These tires have preformed much better than the stock michelins that came on my bravada. They seem to offer much more stability in corners, and have reduced body roll significantly. The tread wear seems as good if not better than the stock tires. There is some audible tire noise but it is easy to ignore.

...Very comfortable and predictable in the trailblazer...

The tire has worked well for my vehicle. It has rained only a few days since installation so I can't say how good the tires are in rain. Very comfortable and predictable in the trailblazer. I do notice a slight difference vs the OEM Continental since these are slightly more rugged looking and performing than the Continental. They have grown on me. I would purchase again especially given the $60 per tire price difference.

...The tread wear is nothing like I have ever experienced on any vehicle I have had...

I bought my Travers new in 2010 and with now 50,122 miles I am just looking for new rubber. Living in Wisconsin, we get a bunch of different types of road conditions and these tires have been nothing but awesome. The tread wear is nothing like I have ever experienced on any vehicle I have had. I can not speak any better of these tires and being a police officer, take my family's safety serious with what I have seen in crashes. These tires will be the ONLY tires I use as long as they fit my vehicle.

...I just rotated these tires (at 3500 miles) and the wear is negligible. These tires look they're going to hold up quite well...

My review may be slightly biased because I have always used performance tires previously on my Tundra. I wanted to smooth my ride out and this tire definitely provides a smooth ride. These tires have provided excellent traction throughout a wet winter/spring. I just rotated these tires (at 3500 miles) and the wear is negligible. These tires look they're going to hold up quite well. With the smooth ride that these tires provide my truck rides like new again. I will be purchasing these tires again when it's time for some new skins!!

...No evidence of wear at 4K miles (as it should be). If I can get a good 30-40K miles out of these tires, I will be extremely pleased, anything more would be icing on the cake (getting great wet & dry traction, a quiet ride and treadwear often conflict... I remember eating up some stickier tires in 15K miles back in my racier days)...

Outstanding tire. Was all set to go with the Michelin Cross Terrains, but decided to give Goodyear a shot, based on a couple of recommendations. They were right, Goodyear really hit a home run with this tire, much quieter than the OEM tires (Uniroyal Laredos), excellent grip and look sharp to boot (I have the Black Serrated Letter version). Costing less than the Michelins didnt hurt either. No evidence of wear at 4K miles (as it should be). If I can get a good 30-40K miles out of these tires, I will be extremely pleased, anything more would be icing on the cake (getting great wet & dry traction, a quiet ride and treadwear often conflict... I remember eating up some stickier tires in 15K miles back in my racier days). Goodyear hit on the right mix of everything with the Fortera.
