Run-Flat Tire FAQ

Run-flat tires are tires specifically developed to provide temporary vehicle mobility for a short distance should you experience complete air pressure loss. Outfitted on certain vehicles as Original Equipment, most run-flat tires enable drivers to continue traveling at speeds up to 50mph (80km/h) for up to 50 miles (80 kilometers). Should drivers encounter a puncture, Tire Rack recommends driving the slowest safe speed possible below 50mph to the shortest distance possible to reach a tire shop for repair or replacement.

Run-flat tires can be mounted on any functioning wheel that fits a non-run-flat tire of the same size. In other words, if your wheels are in good condition and you purchase a run-flat of the same size, they can be mounted.

Additionally, vehicles must be equipped with a functional Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) to drive on run-flat tires. Without the ability to monitor tire air pressure, drivers may not notice sudden air loss or punctures in their run-flat tires, risking their safety on the road. For older vehicles built without TPMS, Tire Rack carries a selection of aftermarket TPMS solutions from top-rated brands like Dill, Schrader, and more.

Whether run-flat tires can be repaired or not depends on their structural damage and potential safety risks.

Depending on the puncture’s location and size, a professional tire technician may be able to repair it. However, any damaged run-flat tires must be inspected by a professional tire technician to determine whether they can be safely patched or not.

Driving on run-flat tires with low or zero air pressure for even a short time can irreparably damage their internal structural integrity. As a result, many tire manufacturers advise replacing run-flat tires that have been driven under these conditions for safety, even if there are no obvious external signs of damage.

When you’re ready to replace your run-flat tires, choose from one of Tire Rack’s 10,000+ independent Recommended Installers across the country for convenient tire installation that works within your schedule. For added convenience, select locations can also opt for our Mobile Tire Installation service for tire delivery right where you are.

Run-flat tires are available in multiple performance categories for various kinds of vehicles, such as sporty sedans, crossovers, and SUVs. Some examples of modern vehicles that offer run-flat tires as an OEM option include the Audi Q5 or Q7, Toyota Sienna (AWD), Chevy Corvette (C5, C6, C7, or C8), Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Nissan Murano or Rogue, Dodge Durango (R/T or SRT), Cadillac Lyriq, Infiniti Q50, Jeep Wrangler (JL or JK), Subaru Forester Hybrid, Lincoln Nautilus, Ford Explorer ST, and even the Lexus NX 350 or LC 500.
