Test Report

Can you put "EV tires" on a gas car?

Short answer: yes - if the size fits, you can mount an EV-developed tire on an internal combustion vehicle. The more interesting question is whether you should. To find out, we put five of the most popular Ultra High Performance All-Season tires - including one OE-developed for a Tesla Model 3 - on a 2024 BMW 330i xDrive in 235/40R19 and ran them through the same wet, dry, and real-world ride evaluations we use on every UHPAS test.

Quick Verdict: UHPAS Tires Compared on the BMW 330i xDrive

Tire Best For Dry Lap Wet Lap Dry 60-0
Goodyear Eagle F1 All-Season Best overall on the BMW 30.13 s 32.06 s 111.4 ft
Michelin Pilot Sport AS 4 Outright performance 30.20 s 31.55 s 109.7 ft
Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 Plus All-around benchmark 30.45 s 31.90 s 110.8 ft
Bridgestone Potenza Sport AS Capable all-rounder 30.75 s 32.98 s 115.9 ft
Goodyear Eagle Sport AS (T0 SCT) EV-developed; weakest here 30.88 s 34.34 s 118.9 ft

Why we tested EV-developed UHPAS tires on the BMW 330i xDrive

Ah, the BMW 330i xDrive. Powered by a series of tiny explosions that begin the moment you turn the key and only stop when you turn it back off, this gasoline machine helped us answer a common question: can you put "EV tires" (or rather, tires developed with EVs in mind) on your internal combustion vehicle?

Yes. The answer is yes. If the size works, you can do it. More importantly, the question is: should you?

We gathered five UHPAS tires, including the new Goodyear Eagle F1 All-Season, and rather than testing them on a single platform, we compared them across vehicles. This report covers our 2024 BMW 330i xDrive; a separate report covers our 2023 Tesla Model 3 Performance, and a round-up compares the two. It's somewhat rare that we test tires on multiple vehicles at all - and rarer still that we do it at the same time.

As usual, we'll introduce each tire, break down our real-world road-ride impressions to set expectations for daily commuting, then take each set around the Tire Rack Test Track in wet and dry conditions to see how they handle the aggressive driving they were designed for. Test Summary

The Verdict: Best UHPAS Tire for a BMW 330i xDrive

That's the BMW portion of the test in the books (be sure to check out the other part here: Best Tires for Tesla Model 3 Performance: 5 UHPAS Tires Tested. While we could clearly differentiate each tire, the spreads across the group were meaningful without being night-and-day - a reflection of how competitive and mature the category has become.

Best Overall Balance: Goodyear Eagle F1 All-Season

Goodyear's Eagle F1 All-Season made a strong debut, with controlled road manners and strong overall competence, delivering predictable wet and dry track behavior that felt engaging and drama-free. It strikes a nice balance between daily refinement and the kind of grip that makes spirited driving feel rewarding - the rare combination of everyday comfort and genuine performance capability that UHPAS tires should aspire to. If you can only test-drive one tire on this list, make it this one.

Best All-Around Benchmark: Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 Plus

The DWS 06 Plus once again showed why it remains, well, a benchmark. Its natural steering feel, excellent noise control, and composed ride make it a delight on real-world roads, while its balanced traction shone on both the wet and dry track. A safe, satisfying pick for a 330i driver who wants one tire that does almost everything well.

Best Outright Performance: Michelin Pilot Sport All-Season 4

Michelin's performance-focused Pilot Sport All-Season 4 suited the BMW well, with responsive handling and solid grip. It felt composed and predictable, prioritizing driver connection without sacrificing too much comfort - the right pick if you push your 330i hard and want a UHPAS tire that fights back.

Capable All-Rounder: Bridgestone Potenza Sport AS

Bridgestone's Potenza Sport AS served as a capable all-rounder on the BMW. The lack of major weaknesses makes it a sensible choice - there really was little to complain about - but it also didn't rise to the level of performance or comfort we found among the test leaders. Still, a good value play if pricing tilts in its favor.

Best EV Efficiency, with Trade-offs: Goodyear Eagle Sport All-Season (T0 SCT)

Goodyear's Eagle Sport All-Season (T0 SCT) rounded out the test with an adequate blend of traits, delivering acceptable road comfort and on-track ability that wasn't too far outside the group. But as a representative of fitting an EV-specific tire on a non-EV vehicle, it felt like an unavoidable step back from the other options. The short version of our answer to "can you put EV tires on a gas car?" is yes - but if you have other UHPAS choices in the size, you're probably better off with one of them.
