Testing Studless Ice & Snow Winter Tires for Crossovers and SUVs(04:23)

There's a common misperception that an SUV's or CUV's advanced systems can create additional traction. They can't. Their purpose is to help the driver make the most of whatever traction their tires can provide.

And for winter season driving, there is none better than a tire from the Studless Ice & Snow category.

We evaluate the category's newest in the most challenging winter condition. Ice.

...On wet pavement the tires stuck like glue, I accelerated aggressively in two wheel drive and tires grabbed like it was dry pavement...

Installed these tires recently, drove from Minnesota through the UP around Lake Michigan and back up to Minnesota. Just for that one trip I experienced icing, light snow, heavy snow, slush, wet pavement and dry pavement. Also unimproved gravel roads. I was very impressed with all categories with this tire. On dry pavement the tire was quiet and responsive to my steering input. Corner felt good, no real tire side wall flex. On wet pavement the tires stuck like glue, I accelerated aggressively in two wheel drive and tires grabbed like it was dry pavement, On icy roads the tire had a noticeably better feel than my All Terrains. Light snow they preformed very well. Clawing through Heavy snow was about equal to the All Terrains. I’m not sure how long the tread will last, but so far I would buy these tires again.

...The snow traction is great as is the wet traction...

I read some of the reviews here and almost didn't buy these because of the complaints about soft sidewalls and poor cornering. This is far from what I have experienced with these tires. I travel a very curvy road every day and cornering is very important to me. My explorer is the sport model with the twin turbo 368HP engine and it came with summer only performance tires it handles like a sports car. When I put on the snows I was pleasantly surprised that I found no difference in handling. The snow traction is great as is the wet traction. These tire rock and they were hundreds of dollars less than the next lowest price snow for this truck.

The exception is stopping on a hill then I need four wheel. In four wheel these are like a tank 98% as sure footed as my Blizzaks and they seem to be lasting longer - the Blizzaks barely make it through one season on a truck - these have 6000 miles and look brand new. I have pulled two SUVs out of a ditch - one in 14 inches of snow pulling up hill - the traction was solid and I popped the SUV free - barely spun the tires - I'd buy these all day long.

...these tires got a very solid grip and can get you up any steep icy hill without an issue, deep snow traction is also great-i was able to pull Subaru out of road side ditch on the steep hill in the deep snow, was very very easy...

Living in lake Tahoe basin for 7 years gave me a chance to try most of the winter tires on the market-General,Firestone,Bridgestone,Goodyear,Continental and many many others.I'm a big fan of "classic" winter tires with studs, gives you the great feel of being safe in any kind of winter conditions. We bought MB ML350 this year and due to the big rim size (20 or 19 inch) it wasn't that big of the selection,so i decided to try these Yokohamas.I turned to be the best bet-these tires got a very solid grip and can get you up any steep icy hill without an issue, deep snow traction is also great-i was able to pull Subaru out of road side ditch on the steep hill in the deep snow, was very very easy.So far i'm very impressed with Ice Guard pefromance,if the tread life is as good as Firestone or General-i guess i got new favorite (non-studded!!!) winter tire.

...Very good responsiveness on dry pavement (not totally like an AT tire but pretty close- a T Speed rated tire handles highway speeds well not a spongy feel)...

This is my first set of Yokohama snow tires. I usually buy Blizzaks and they are really good snow tires but pretty much only get a season and a half out of them on my other cars(I live in Idaho - plenty of snow and mixed conditions). So far these have been exceptional as far as performance on my F-150. Pretty quiet on dry pavement - a little louder than a Michelin LTX AT . Very good responsiveness on dry pavement (not totally like an AT tire but pretty close- a T Speed rated tire handles highway speeds well not a spongy feel). Handles pack snow and ice exceptionally, deep snow no problem. Can't comment on tread wear but will after the season. Look brand new after 2000 miles so we will see. Tire size p275 65 18

With only having 1200 miles on them the overall wear question is still a unknown.
Traction in all conditions has been very good. If pushed in a dry corner at hwy speeds I do experience more understeer/drift then the factory All season tires.
Braking on ice/snow is excellent.
Noise on grooved pavement can be moderate as is chasing the grooves.
The colder the weather the better the tires feel/respond.

We have noticed that the ride is very comfortable and the breaking distance is far improved over our all-season tires, which gives us great comfort in bad weather conditions... They are quiet in city driving but we do hear some occasional tire noise on the freeway at speeds above 70 MPH...

We live in the Boston, MA area and bought a set of 4 Yokohama iceGUARD iG51v winter tires for our Jeep GC Overland and so far we are very pleased with our purchase! Although it's been a mild winter regarding snowfall so far and we've only put 5K miles on this set, they easily handle light/medium snow, icy conditions and perform well in cold weather driving. We have noticed that the ride is very comfortable and the breaking distance is far improved over our all-season tires, which gives us great comfort in bad weather conditions. Tire tread has barely changed since they were new so we expect to get 4-5 winters use out of this set. They are quiet in city driving but we do hear some occasional tire noise on the freeway at speeds above 70 MPH. Also, the cost was very reasonable compared to other similar premium brands so it is a good value. Overall, we enjoy the ride comfort, added safety benefits and solid winter/snow performance so we highly recommend these Yokohama tires. A+ for sure!

I have driven on Blizzaks for most of by driving life and bought these because Blizzaks were not available. The Yokohamas have an amazing ride, they are not a squishy on the road as the Blizzaks which in turn seems to have a much more stable ride - especially on the CX-9 which is a much larger Suv. Ice and snow grip were incredible - and it was a very quite ride. Very impressed - price point is also so much better.

Very, very pleased.

...Was pleasantly surprised at the ride comfort as it was slightly worse than the all season tires that came with vehicle. The noise from these tires was very low and again, slightly worse than the all season tires that cam on vehicle...

Used in NH ski country this winter and the traction was really excellent. Traveled many times in light snow, black ice/sleet/freezing rain and felt very solid. Granted I kept speed reasonable in the bad conditions but never felt even the slightest slip or sliding sensation.
Was pleasantly surprised at the ride comfort as it was just slightly worse than the all season tires that came with vehicle. The noise from these tires was very low and again, just slightly worse than the all season tires that cam on vehicle.
The tires have shown very little if any wear which is great for a tires with such great traction. Would buy again!!!

...These Yokohamas are the UGI's peer in every way... and an estimated treadwear of 30,000 miles over the first 7/32 of tread in the conditions I use them (they're at 12/32 after 4,189 miles; 6/32 is the lowest I use winter tires, as they lose much of their effectiveness here)...

I normally would not review a tire after so few miles, but just took these off for the season after only a month on the car, so I figured it was better to do it now than wait until next winter! In the five short weeks that we had these mounted, we experienced pretty much all the winter conditions one is likely to come across.

I've purchased most winter tire options out there, and I can confidently say that these are excellent! As another reviewer recently stated, winter tires will, hands down, transform the winter driving experience. If you enjoy driving and have never used studless winter tires (and you live in an area that experiences winter conditions), you should try some! However, not all winter tires are equal. In particular, there are three primary areas that I look for in a winter tire: 1. Deep Snow, 2. Ice, 3. Treadwear. For the best balance of these three, the Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice (circa 2009) is the best tire I have ever experienced. Sadly, designs change (sometimes not for the better) and these are but a memory. Michelin X-Ice and Blizzak are excellent on ice, but poor in the other two categories.

These Yokohamas are the UGI's peer in every way. Excellent ice traction, beastly in deep snow, and an estimated treadwear of 30,000 miles over the first 7/32" of tread in the conditions I use them (they're at 12/32" after 4,189 miles; 6/32" is the lowest I use winter tires, as they lose much of their effectiveness here). As a bonus, they are also quite stable on dry roads.

Quiet, smooth, effective, and affordable. I highly recommend that you try them!

...They have been on my truck for two years... wear is unbelievable...

I am VERY impressed with these tires. They have been on my truck for two years. The snow traction is excellent, the ride is acceptable, wear is unbelievable, they also preformed well in mud and they look good. If I had to day anything negative about these tires is that at highway speeds they are noisy but they are winter tires and that is to be expected. I love there tires. I would buy them again and I would recommend them to others. I have had a four wheel drive F-150 in some form or fashion for "ever" and have gone through many brands of tires. these have been the best!

...Tread wear has been outstanding - after two winters (9,000+ miles) the tires appear to still be at full tread depth. Bought tire based on price (was also looking at buying Cooper winter tires). I have never owned a set of Yokohama tires before. I was predisposed to dislike these tires when they arrived and were offloaded off the delivery truck - for the same size, these tires were a full inch wider than previous Michelin and BFG Long Trails. The tires looked to be more styled and engineered. I expected them to float over snow. I was wrong!

I have been VERY pleasantly surprised. I use 4wd much less in the winter than before with all season tires. I just do not need to use 4wd in light to moderate snows because of the great traction.

Tread wear has been outstanding - after two winters (9,000+ miles) the tires appear to still be at full tread depth. The contact surface of the tread blocks is molded with very small wiggly features and these are still very much as molded on the outer tread blocks and still partially visible on the inner three tread blocks. Part of the outstanding tread wear must be that I only use this vehicle in the winter - I do not think I have ever driven it with temps above 50 F.

My winter vehicle has a very short wheelbase. The first 100 miles or so of driving every winter the vehicle feels over responsive (twitchy). After a couple of days I do not notice this anymore.
