Studless Ice & Snow tires work best when winter is at its worst. But there are plenty of miles driven on dry and wet roads, too. Most of the design elements that aid winter traction reduce clear road handling precision. Increased priority in one area leads to a trade-off in another.

To find out what sort of handling and traction the newest and best deliver, the Tire Rack team hit the road … and the ice rink!

Clear road handling, stopping in the wet and dry, coping with glare ice and the need to dig through deep snow -- which winter performance category is best in tackling these wintertime driving conditions?

In "Choosing Between Performance Winter / Snow and Studless Ice & Snow Winter Tires" we pinpoint the differences that exist within these two tire categories as we test the Bridgestone Blizzak LM-60 and Bridgestone Blizzak WS60. Dunlop's new Winter Maxx replaces the Graspic DS-3, which was a nice upgrade in winter traction versus the typical all-season tire, but couldn't match the outright snow and ice performance of the best Studless Ice & Snow tires. How does it compare to category leaders from Bridgestone, Continental and Michelin?

It's no secret that today's Studless Ice and Snow tires deliver excellent traction in winter's worst weather, providing slush, snow and ice traction that easily surpasses even the best all-season tire.

We took a group of these tires to the glare ice of a local hockey rink and drove them out on the road. Take a look at how they performed.

Every few years, tire technology and development takes a step forward and resets the standards for the category. This time around, new Studless Ice and Snow winter tires feature high-tech tread compounds and new tread designs. Our road, ABS braking and glare ice evaluations highlighted three of the newest: Continental ExtremeWinterContact, Dunlop Graspic DS-3 and Bridgestone Blizzak WS60.

Watch how the group will perform out on the road and on winter's glare ice as Tire Rack conducts a Real World Road Ride and Performance Drive at a local hockey rink.

In January, 2009 during the height of winter in Northern Sweden, we compared three Studless Ice & Snow winter tires designed with advanced tread compounds and highly evolved tread patterns to be the best for when winter conditions are the worst. Their ability to accelerate, brake and drive through the snow and across ice was measured objectively (with sensitive on-board instruments) and subjectively (how they felt from the driver's seat).
