The AltiMAX Arctic 12 is General's Studdable Winter/Snow tire designed for the drivers of coupes, sedans, crossovers and SUVs looking for confident performance and traditional wintertime traction on dry, wet and snow-covered roads.
General AltiMAX Arctic 12 tires feature a winter-focused compound molded into a highly directional tread pattern. The arrow-shaped, rigid central rib provides solid on-center feel and steering response, and the optimized tread contour aids in pressure distribution across the footprint for improved wear compared to the previous-generation tire. High-void, angled grooves and wide lateral notches evacuate water and slush from the contact patch to resist hydroplaning, and the strategically angled tread blocks and serrated sipes provide additional biting edges for confident traction in slippery conditions.
Internal construction of the AltiMAX Arctic 12 consists of a high-turn up, polyester casing beneath two wide, steel belts. A spirally wound, polyamide cap ply aids handling and provides high-speed durability.
AltiMAX Arctic 12 tires meet the industry's severe snow service requirements and are branded with the three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) symbol.
Install AltiMAX Arctic 12 tires in sets of four only.
Molded to accept optional TSMI #12 silver-colored metallic winter studs.

Tire Rack Test Results General Altimax Arctic 12
All-Weather vs. Winter Tires: The Definitive Test(12:05)
Brent and TJ set off with a couple of objectives in this, the first test of 2026. The first is to highlight the differences between two types of Grand Touring tires: all-season and all-weather. Second, to see how they stack up to dedicated winter tires. The internet is a great resource, but not all the information out there is accurate, and this test is designed to truly set the record straight.
User feedback reveals the General Altimax Arctic 12 excels in winter performance, with outstanding snow traction (9-10 scores) and reliable ice grip, though a few noted slightly reduced ice confidence compared to deep snow capability. Wet and dry traction scores (7-10) show consistent grip, aligning well with winter-focused expectations. Comfort earns praise for smooth ride quality, though some report elevated noise levels at higher speeds. Treadwear ratings (7-10) suggest durability through multiple seasons, with a few outliers noting faster wear. Winter drivers appreciate its balanced traction and stability, making it a strong choice for harsh conditions while maintaining respectable all-around performance.

This is the third set of Altimax Arctics for our cars -- two on a Volvo V70 and one set on a Camry. This tire is a great value. Beefy tread, good in snow and wet, decent tread life. They don't wander on the highway. Yes, a bit of noise but they're SNOW tires. No complaints.

...Honestly one of the top 3 tires I've ever used for winter traction...
Fantastic tire for the price. Honestly one of the top 3 tires I’ve ever used for winter traction. Had these on multiple vehicles, and plan to continue to put them on anything that they provide the size for. Can be a little loud in the studded version, but well worth the trade of for safety, tread wear, and overall value provided.

I bought the same tire for my new car as this is a great tire for the Vermont winters... I had no problems going where i needed to in all conditions.
I have had 2 sets of this tire prior to the ones i just got. I had them on a 2011 Subaru forester. I got 7 years out of the first set and had the second set for two years. The only reason i bought new is I changed cars and the ones i purchased 2 years ago did not fit the new car. I bought the same tire for my new car as this is a great tire for the Vermont winters. I live on a dirt road and drive 9 miles one way on a paved road to work from the end of my dirt road. I had no problems going where i needed to in all conditions.

...In my experience driving on several brands, the General Altimax 12 are the best snow tires for my car. Studs really help on ice...
I've driven this model car for many years, heading to the ski hill (sponsored by Nokian) every day of the winter. In my experience driving on several brands, the General Altimax 12 are the best snow tires for my car. Studs really help on ice. It is hard to find pre-studded tires. They were not listed on the Tire Rack website. I had to call a salesperson to get replacement studded tires. Rowan was very helpful. Please update the website to offer the studded option, as I will be looking to replace these tires with the same thing in the future.

Excellent handling on wet and dry roads. Aggressive tread design but super quiet for a winter tire. Can't wait to get them into the snow.

...They performed admirably, providing a dependable and comfortable ride in all conditions...
This is the fourth set of Altimax Arctic 12 tires I've purchased from Tire Rack. I like them so much, I was willing to wait a couple weeks this time, as they were out of stock for a while. Apparently, a lot of other people like them, too! I always run these tires with a dedicated set of winter wheels, and I trust them to get me through even the deepest snow, even the pile at the end of my driveway that the plow leaves! The tread life is also amazing; in fact, due to family health problems I was forced to leave a set on my 2017 Forester for 3 winters and 2 summers consecutively. They performed admirably, providing a dependable and comfortable ride in all conditions. I currently have these exact tires on my 2015 Impreza, 2015 Outback, and the second set on my 2017 Forester. With Subaru all wheel drive and the performance I get with these tires, I will continue buying them as long as General keeps making them!

...They offer excellent snow grip and are comfortable...
This is an excellent winter tire for the money. They offer excellent snow grip and are comfortable. They've gotten a little louder since when they were new, but that is to be expected. Still nothing terrible. The handling and cornering performance is what you'd expect from a winter tire - nothing special, but I've had winter tires that were way clumbsier than these. They offer a very accepable handling experience in my opinion. And the treadwear is fantastic, I estimate I'll get 16k-18k out of these before they need to be replaced.

...Quiet and nice riding... Ran them year round because they were so quiet...
Outstanding snow tires. Quiet and nice riding. Had them on my last Outback and were very impressed with them. Ran them year round because they were so quiet. Thought about the Michelin Cross treks, but glad that I bought the Arctic 12's. Deep snow and ice performance is outstanding. The last ones were still good with 40,000 miles. Can't beat that.

...They wear extremely well and are inexpensive.
I have buying these General Arctics now, I think for more than 10 years for my BMW’s and VW’s. They have out performed Blizzacks IMO because they perform well in bad conditions and in dry they don’t get squirmy, if you know what I mean. They wear extremely well and are inexpensive.

This is the 3rd set of this particular tire that I've purchased... it wears well...
This is the 3rd set of this particular tire that I’ve purchasedMy experience either it is that it wears well, wet and snow traction is excellent. The only trade offs are they are noisier than the OEM tires, and the handling is not as tight. But we live in the snow belt off Lake Erie, and all season tires don’t always perform as well as a dedicated snow tire. This will be the first AWD vehicle that I have used them on, with my previous vehicles being FWD.

...I road them through an entire summer and had no issues the following winter. They didn't "melt" in the heat like some people make you believe snow tires do, so they definitely get my approval for summer conditions and durability.
These have incredible traction in the snow. I even think the stud holes help with grip if you leave them un-studded. I road them through an entire summer and had no issues the following winter. They didn't "melt" in the heat like some people make you believe snow tires do, so they definitely get my approval for summer conditions and durability.
