The Grabber Arctic is General Tire's Light Truck/SUV Studdable Winter / Snow tire developed for the drivers of pickup trucks, sport utility vehicles, and vans looking for traction on winter's slushy, snow-covered and icy roads. Designed to offer traction in near- and below-freezing temperatures, Grabber Arctic winter tires are molded to accommodate optional metal studs.
Grabber Arctic tires feature a robust cut- and chip-resistant winter compound that maintains flexibility in freezing temperatures. This compound is molded into a broad, directional tread design featuring a central row of tread blocks flanked by independent intermediate blocks and squared-off shoulders. The intermediate and shoulder blocks feature angled interlocking light truck winter sipes to combine dry and wet performance with snow-biting surface edges. Diagonal and zigzag sipes work together to increase three-dimensional traction in deep snow. Alternating rows of optional metal studs can be inserted into the shoulder and intermediate tread blocks to increase traction on hard packed snow and icy roads.
The Grabber Arctic tire's wide, flat footprint is supported by ultra-high-strength steel belts reinforced with spirally wrapped nylon to deliver exceptional penetration resistance and even footprint pressure for excellent braking and confident stability under all approved load conditions. General Grabber Arctic tires meet the industry's severe snow service requirements and are branded with the three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) symbol.
Install Grabber Arctic tires in sets of four only.

...Wet traction is excellent, and no issues with hydroplaning to this point...
I bought my 2005 Tahoe used in 2016 and installed the General Arctic tires shortly after getting it. I got them from Tire Rack, and they are not studded. My primary use is as a tow vehicle for a 2 horse trailer and inboard ski boat. Both trailers loaded weigh about 6,000 lbs. Otherwise this is a 2nd vehicle and it is our primary winter vehicle. Yearly mileage is about 5 to 6K. I've now got 28K on the tires. The truck's tire sticker calls for 32 psi, but I usually run them at 35 psi. At this point the tread is worn to 4-5/32, but the tire is still very safe to drive. It is late March now and I will likely replace them next fall before the major winter storms start. I am happy with that treadlife as I run the tires year round. I was looking for a winter tire but knew they would be used all year. So, I wanted a good tread design for winter, enough rubber surface for treadwear, good sipping for wet water dispersal, and I was willing to sacrifice some dry road traction.
Driving on dry roads in the summer is not an issue for me. The tire turns responsively, and has good traction on start up and any breakaway in corners is manageable. This is a top heavy vehicle and I generally don't push it all that hard in tight corners. Wet traction is excellent, and no issues with hydroplaning to this point. Tire noise is low and hasn't increased as the tires have worn. My truck has tire monitors which can be a pain when you have leaky tires. In all these years I've never had to repair a flat these Generals. I've had to several flat repairs on my other cars. The pressure monitors always show the pressures are fine. I've really enjoyed how well these tire resist puncture and hold air. I've never had to rebalance any tire either. They are the most trouble free tires I've ever had.
I live on a steep hill in the Pocono Mountains of PA. The snow traction is excellent; deep, light, slushy, and icy are all excellent. That's true even on the worn treads

...These tires perform very well in the snow and in the wet...
Bought these with a set of discounted wheels as our snow tire set. The OEMs on this truck are lousy in the snow. These tires perform very well in the snow and wet. Fairly quiet and nice ride quality. I would highly recommend.

...About a foot of fresh powder and hardly plowed roads I got in my Grand Cherokee and hit the road... Driving at a prudent pace I was hard pressed to make my traction control come in. The Jeep felt solid and confident...
Coming from a year old set of Nokian Hakkapelita R2 Suv's I was looking for a quick fix to a set of tyres that I ran all year. I always like fresh rubber on my Jeep, especially when I know I will be driving in snow. I set a premium price on my Nokian's and they were great at first but once they wore down a little they were nothing special. Knowing that I couldn't be running a year old set of snow tires on my 70+ mile commute round trip I needed a tyre in a pinch. I did not want to spend the money or wait for the Nokian's to get sent out. With Tire Rack I know they will be at my house the next day no questions asked.
Call me a snob but I didn't have high expectations for these tyres. However once I got them and saw the quality I was impressed. The on thing that chaps my you know what is the road noise. They certainly "sing" a little more than my Nokians. However that being my only complaint I am happy.
Today I finally got to test them out. About a foot of fresh powder and hardly plowed roads I got in my Grand Cherokee and hit the road. Having 3 open difs can be a problem, especially in the snow. That's why having a good set of rubber is important to me. If the Jeep doesn't have the ability to transfer power I certainly want a great set of tires to counteract that. Driving at a prudent pace I was hard pressed to make my traction control come in. The Jeep felt solid and confident. I had no problem taking on snowbanks that had overcome the likes of a front wheel drive Maxima a few hundred feet down the road. The Maxima was going no where fast and after offering my assistance I was on my way. These tires exhibit more then just good traction, crisp turning and braking is right there too. As long as you don't drop the hammer and push the limits these tires should be an excellent choice for winter driving. If you want to really get carried away feel free to have them studded. I recommend your local tyre shoppe to handle that if need be. That's all for now...

...These tires grip the ice and snow unbelievably great.
I bought two of these tires for the rear of my 2WD Silverado. I chose the studded option, this may add to the road noise. These tires grip the ice and snow unbelievably great.

...The ride is smooth, and the SUV is responsive to steering input. I don't push this vehicle in corners, but I get a feeling of confidence when cornering with these tires so far...
My Tahoe has 17" wheels and I'm hoping to run these winter tires year round. I use the Tahoe more in the winter for snow driving, and in the summer mainly to pull a boat and horse trailers a few times each summer. What I wanted most was a smooth riding and quiet tire, with an aggressive tread design for winter snow and ice. This is an early review, but the tires are quiet when new. Hopefully as they wear they will stay quiet. The ride is smooth, and the SUV is responsive to steering input. I don't push this vehicle in corners, but I get a feeling of confidence when cornering with these tires so far.
I was shopping for Michelin X-Ice tires for this truck, but they were back ordered into mid December. These Grabber winter tires are a great price and I decided to give them a try. Pleased with the decision at this point.

...I find dry highway driving better in these than the Blizzak, which get squirmy on dry pavement if it warms up a bit, so that's the trade off...
Had these one winter so far. I'd say these compare closely to the Hankook iPike. Both are a bit harder compound winter, so ice traction is not as good as the Blizzak DMV2, but tread life if better, and I find dry highway driving better in these than the Blizzak, which get a bit squirmy on dry pavement if it warms up a bit, so that's the trade off. Still a good winter tire, price is good. If I was wanted the best pure winter tire, and didn't mind replacing more often due to higher wear rate, I'd get the Blizzaks, but these are a good compromise due to a bit harder compound and bit more longevity. I would recommend these. On a side note, I get a kick out of the people that complain about winters tires wearing out quickly due to driving them year round. Do your homework, they aren't meant for year round driving.

...on dry pavement is acceptable. They are very smooth and they do make a discernible sound. It is not intrusive but it can be clearly heard...
I have only experienced these tires for one winter and it has been a very mild winter at that. We did finally get something that resembles snow and these tires have behaved admirably. In the snow, I have been mostly in 2wd as these tires have provided more than enough traction to get me going. However, in several instances I have had to engage the 4H or 4L. Regardless, these tires take a little bit of coaxing to grip initially. However, after some initial wheel spin, these tires hook as if they were on dry pavement. I do not have them studded, we don't get enough ice and snow consistently to warrant their use. And the roads here are bad enough as it is. It is worth mentioning that these tires do not like to do two things at once. They will either go forward, stop you, or turn. They do not do two at once very well.
When the terrain gets muddy and snowy, these tires do an incredible job of finding and creating traction. I have been pleasantly surprised with their ability to handle muddy, slushy and snowy terrain, even off road. RIde comfort on dry pavement is acceptable. They are very smooth and they do make a discernible sound. It is not intrusive but it can be clearly heard. I would probably buy these tires again, especially for the price.

...Quiet, smooth ride... Much quieter on pavement than the Firestone Winterforce tires on my other truck...
Great tire. Quiet, smooth ride. I work in construction and travel dirty and muddy roads onsite and the Grabbers do just that. With 2 wheel drive and posi rear end I go anywhere the other guys in 4 wheel drive pickups go. Much quieter on pavement than the Firestone Winterforce tires on my other truck. Recommended

A rougher ride than my M&S Michelin Latitude ( of course) and probably not as good mileage . But these are rated for pulling a trailer if needed , and speed rated . Drove perfect and safely in slush then thick snow and comfortable after it all froze .Thats why I bought them .Safety first .Ill take on any condition with these . Of course slightly worse gas mileage than the Michelins ( Expected) . A better value as well .

...And the tread life has been very good. I run the tires all year round and the tread wear markers are still showing life left. That's about 5yrs and 45000 miles.
I bought these tires in an off size for my S10 truck and had the speedo reset to match. I buy tires based on best performance not on some fixed preconception base on vehicle model. But I find it hard to look up tires this way because of the stringent way the tirerack website is set up. That does ----. I wish they would allow looking up a tire model and showing the sizes that the model offers, allowing me to select the tire I want rather than tirerack denying me that ability. But unfortunately the site is not set up like that. However, the General Altimax Artic tires are great. I go through deep snow with no problem. I am able to gain speed faster and stop quicker with two wheel drive with these tires than I can with a 4wd Blazer running new all seasons in snow and ice. And the tread life has been very good. I run the tires all year round and the tread wear markers are still showing life left. That's about 5yrs and 45000 miles. Real nice. But now I want to get a new set and the Artics are not available in the size I had bought, nor in the original size for the truck. Would like to see what is available in other sizes but that is not happening here. Might have to look else where besides tirerack.

This is going on the third winter season with these Generals,I paid $96.00 each for these in 2017 ,I've used Continentals and Michelins on my vehicles over the years, I can honestly say for the money I paid for these they were money well spent. Were I live in Northern Ontario we get all wether conditions here,Ice, heavy snow, slush ,cold dry conditions and these tires have not let me down, yet .Ive put about 25K on them and still lots of tread left probably two more winters before they are replaced

...I expect my studded Generals will last me 10+ years. A fantastic investment...
This is a studded winter tire. I have been in the automotive tire and repair business for 25 years. Retired now in the mountains of Montana from Orange County California. First set of studded tires I have owned. Even with AWD and a highly rated AT tire my spirited driving, even in snow and ice, turned me into a "grandma" in bad conditions. Always safety first. Knowing this I jumped straight to a studded tire instead of a non studded snow and ice dedicated tire. Being retired I had plenty of time to research about a dozen tires. The general tire clicked every box. Of course studded. Price. Size. And even an XL extra load rating for my SUV. Between a non studded or studded tire for me was a no brainer. They are both only good, economical, for winter driving. So if you are going to swap them out after winter why not have the best for the same price.
One footnote. Where I live I get an above average amount of snow and ice even for Montana. Being retired I do not have a weekly commute. I know the Bridgestone Blizzak is a great tire do to it's reputation. I just have no first hand experience with them. Still was no question I was getting a studded tire. Rain, snow and ice are the worst possible driving conditions. I have a dedicated set of wheels for my studded tires so swapping them out is very easy and free.
I expect my studded Generals will last me 10+ years. A fantastic investment. Remember alignment, rotations, and proper air pressure are critical for safety and getting the most from your tires regardless of design.
