The P Zero Nero (nero Italian for black) is Pirelli's Max Performance Summer tire developed for the drivers of sports cars, sporty coupes and medium-large sedans. The P Zero Nero was developed to work harder so the driver could play harder exploiting the sporting character of their high performance car. Pirelli's warranty does not cover tires that develop compound cracking due to use in ambient temperatures below 45° Fahrenheit (7° Celsius), so the P Zero Nero, like all summer tires, is not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.

P Zero Nero tires feature a silica and carbon black enhanced tread compound molded into a subtle asymmetric, wide rib tread design to increase the rigidity of the tread to resist deformation and enhance grip and steering response on a variety of road surfaces while enhancing resistance to irregular wear and generating low noise levels. Circumferential grooves are optimized in their position and width to maximize dry road performance while enhancing hydroplaning resistance.

The tire's internal structure features twin steel belts reinforced by zero degree nylon to complement a lightweight aramid internal structure that resists deformation at high speeds.

Lexus IS300 sport sedans

Lexus IS300 On Test Track The Max Performance tire category is reserved for the technologically advanced tires that combine highly developed materials with precision manufacturing techniques to provide superior dry and wet traction, handling and high speed capabilities. Included in this category are the tires that offer the maximum level of performance in a single focus (dry traction, wet traction or hydroplaning resistance), or those that do an extraordinary job of blending a variety of performance characteristics (dry traction, wet traction and hydroplaning resistance).

While this makes Max Performance tires ideal for powerful sports cars, the demand for this type of tire continues to increase to also meet the needs of the drivers of a whole new generation of sport coupes, sport sedans, and even sport wagons. Just making it to the Max Performance category is difficult enough. Achieving it by providing a blend of performance characteristics is truly an accomplishment. Fortunately in the ever-escalating world of Max Performance tires, new technology continues to round out the performance envelope as tire performance is maintained while comfort is increased.

Pirelli P Zero tires have been represented in the Max Performance category since the beginning. The P Zero Direzionale and Asimmetrico, and P Zero Rosso (ro’ so - Italian for red) tires offered performance levels that not only made them Original Equipment on many of the world’s finest and fastest cars, but also earned them the respect of drivers who wanted to upgrade their vehicle to a higher level of performance.

Pirelli has added the P Zero Nero (ne’ ro - Italian for black) Max Performance summer tire to their P Zero Collection. The P Zero Nero is mainly destined for the high performance replacement tire market and is designed to offer a versatility of usage that makes it appealing for drivers interested in upgrading their car.

In order to get a better understanding of the performance provided by the P Zero Nero Max Performance summer tires, Tire Rack Team conducted a Real World Road Ride and a Performance Test Track Drive comparing them to the Bridgestone Potenza S-03 Pole Position w/UNI-T AQII and Michelin Pilot Sport tires. We used Z-speed rated, 225/45R17-sized tires mounted on 17"x7.5" wheels. This package was fitted to three 2001 Lexus IS300 sport sedans equipped with Eibach Pro-Kit Sport Springs and KONI Sport shock absorbers adjusted to their softest setting to control suspension movement and body roll.

Bridgestone Potenza S-03 Pole Position w/UNI-T AQ II Technology

The Potenza S-03 Pole Position Max Performance "summer" tire was developed by bringing Bridgestone’s F1 tire technology and design to the streets while blending dry and wet traction without abandoning comfort and wear. The Potenza S-03 Pole Position features Bridgestone’s UNI-T AQ II technology that uses advanced compound and construction features to enhance and preserve wet traction through the tire’s life. The Potenza S-03 Pole Position provides Max Performance that lasts.

On the outside, the Potenza S-03 Pole Position molds a dual layer tread compound into a directional tread design that features notched shoulders, large intermediate tread blocks and a continuous center rib to provide quick dry road response and handling. Circumferential and lateral grooves help direct and evacuate water through the tire to resist hydroplaning. The continuous center rib also helps reduce noise while providing constant road contact to enhance straight-line stability. Internally, the Potenza S-03 Pole Position features twin steel belts with spiral-wrapped nylon to stabilize the tread area to enhance handling, high-speed capability and ride quality while minimizing weight.

On the road the Potenza S-03 Pole Position tires were praised for their ride comfort and good noise level while providing real world handling that’s appropriate for the Max Performance category.

The track times for all three tires showed how competitive the Max Performance tire category has become, with only a tenth of a second separating any two tires. On the track in the wet and the dry, the Potenza S-03 Pole Position tires provided predictable handling and enough grip to run average lap times that fell between the other two tires. Since we were testing new tires, the Potenza S-03 Pole Position’s feature that our testing didn’t evaluate was its ability to maintain a higher level of wet traction as its tread wears down.

Michelin Pilot Sport

The Michelin Pilot Sport Max Performance tire is designed to extend the capabilities of exotic and ultra high performance cars and their drivers in the wet, while providing progressive handling, exceptional feedback and refined road manners.

One of the most obvious features of the Pilot Sport is its directional tread design that features a continuous circumferential center rib flanked by a "V" shaped pattern. The continuous center rib sharpens steering response and provides communicative road feel while the swept back lateral grooves efficiently evacuate water from under the contact patch to resist hydroplaning and enhance wet traction, while reducing tire noise on dry roads. Internally, the Pilot Sport’s tread is supported by two belts made of high-tensile, lightweight steel cords which are further reinforced by size-optimized, spirally wrapped polyamide cord to improve quick steering response and resist distortion while they enhance ride quality and high speed durability. Ultra-reinforced sidewalls promote cornering, while Michelin’s cable beads help maintain the ideal shape of a running tire for better tire/wheel uniformity.

On the road the Pilot Sport received good marks for real world ride comfort, noise comfort and handling.

On the track in the wet and the dry, the Pilot Sport-equipped car was willing to understeer slightly, yet remained predictable and ran lap times that were just behind the other two tires.

Pirelli P Zero Nero - or maybe it should be P Zero "Hero"

The P Zero Nero Max Performance "summer" tire is designed for the drivers of sports cars, coupes and sedans. The P Zero Nero was developed to work harder so the driver could play harder exploiting the sporting character of their high performance car.

On the outside, the P Zero Nero features a silica- and carbon black-enhanced tread compound molded into a subtle asymmetric, wide rib tread design to increase the rigidity of the tread to resist deformation and enhance grip and steering response on a variety of road surfaces while enhancing resistance to irregular wear and generating low noise levels. The tire’s circumferential grooves are optimized in their position and width to maximize dry road performance while enhancing hydroplaning resistance. On the inside, the P Zero Nero features twin steel belts reinforced by zero degree nylon to resist deformation at high speeds while an aramid-reinforced rayon ply carcass enhances ride quality and directional stability.

On the road the P Zero Nero tires were also praised for their ride comfort and low noise level while providing real world handling that confirmed it deserved its Max Performance category position.

On the track in the wet and the dry, the P Zero Nero tires provided predictable handling and enough grip to run average lap times that were just ahead of the other two tires to confirm that it deserved its Max Performance category position. These results also showed that the P Zero Nero is the most competitive Pirelli tire we have tested to date making it the P Zero Hero!

...They have excellent stick in the wet - an S02s strong point.

This is the third set of tires on the S4. By way of reference the first set was Bridgestone RE040s and second set S02s. The S02s were the best dry performance tire Ive ever used except for the load roar on all surfaces after about 10k miles. (Uneven tire wear was not the issue as tires wore very evenly) The new Neros have very good dry stick - not quite up to the 3/4 worn S02s. They have excellent stick in the wet - an S02s strong point. Excellent steering response almost as good as the S02s - still need to play with pressures a bit. They are much quieter and as a bonus they have a more comfortable ride and are an excellent value. If they wear well, I think Im going to like them better than the Bridgestones.

...The wet traction is amazing, I live in Vancouver and it rains 9 months a year and these tires been great for that weather. Hydroplaning was not as good as some directional tires Ive had before, but to me wet traction is more important...

Absolutely the BEST TIRES I have ever owned. It was such an amazing upgrade over my OEM Michelin that was unbelievable. I drive very aggressively and track and AutoX my car. I go through Z-rated tires in 10-15K miles, if lucky. These have lasted 26,000 miles and will probably go for another 5,000... and have done 3 full day tracks and 2 Auto cross, some Kumho tires last only one session and thats it. Wet traction is amazing, I live in Vancouver and it rains 9 months a year and these tires been great for that weather. Hydroplaning was not as good as some directional tires Ive had before, but to me "wet traction" is more important. They have an amazing stiff sidewall without sacrificing too much ride, I remember that on my first track session I had to reduce PSI as it was not rolling at all like my previous tires, my instructor was quite surprised. BTW, I have the summer version, so didnt try this in snow and comments are for the Summer tread. Highly recommended to anyone who wants a tire that performs in dry and wet, with stiff sidewall, and deent milage for performance! TWO THUMBS UP!

The good- they stick well in both dry and wet conditions and are imho a very communicative tire ... you have a good sense of what the tire is doing...

The 205/40R17 P Zero Nero's were original equipment on my 2018 FIAT 500 Abarth. The good- they stick well in both dry and wet conditions and are imho a very communicative tire .... you have a good sense of what the tire is doing. The bad- tramlining. Most of the time it's nonexistent except for rain grooves. On most rain grooves the tires let you know they are there and it's not a big deal but there's one particular set of (deep) grooves where the car acts like it's possessed, swinging wildly side to side. It's a road I seldom take and I've never encountered it anywhere else.

The other bad is treadwear but with a 220 rating what else could you expect .... I knew that going in. Think I'll be lucky to see 20,000 miles out of them. The tires are currently off the car and a set of Blizzak WS80's are in their place and am looking forward to the end of the month when the P Zero's go back on. The Blizzaks are great in snow, ice and freezing temps (the P Zeros are not- damhikt) but seriously degrade the handling. Imho the P Zero Nero is an excellent summer only tire and when it comes time to replace them, they will be near or at the top of my list of tires to consider.

I have 4K miles on these tires and so far im completely satisfied w/their performance. they have tenacious grip, particularly at launch as well as during hard cornering. with a good rear sway bar youll find yourself taking on/off ramps at highway speeds without a thought. they are very difficult to spin or squeal ever when you try. being my 1st MAX performace tire i was expecting a somewhat harsh/loud ride but these tires are very comfortable and i cant notice any more noise/droning than from the stock michelins. too early to comment on wear, past pirellis achilles heel, but from my experience so far id highly recommend these.

...They absolutely rule for dry, they are smooth, VERY responsive, quiet, and get GREAT traction...

I used to have the stock Bridgestone 205/55R16 tires. They were ok, considering, I used to drive a 1990 Subaru Loyale Wagon with 165/80R13s, so they were definately better than my previous size tire. I bought these Pirelli PZero Neros because my tires were in DIRE need of replacement. Let me just start out by saying that Tirerack was very professional in how they handled everything. There site is VERY nice, these reviews are VERY nice to read. My review is more of how tirerack handled my order than my tires. Anyway, back to the Pirelli PZero Nero, They absolutely rule for dry, they are smooth, VERY responsive, quiet, and get GREAT traction. In the rain, well, I have an AWD car, so sometimes I forget that my cornering is better than most, but they would budge under high speeds and sharp cornering (normal). But im talking 90 degree corners at like 40-50-60 mph!!! In general though, I was VERY abusive to these tires, I never rotated them, rarely checked the air till they started leaking air, overweighted my GVWR by 300% and continued to drive like a bat out of hell, (i have a paper route that requires like 60 miles a day driving through backroads, rain, snow, dirt roads, paved, you name it, i drove on it).

I got 18,000 miles of the best miles Ive ever had on ANY set of tires regardless of how I treated them. IF I just drove to work and to the store and checked my air every time I got gas, and just generally take it easy, these tires would probably last 60,000 EAAAAAAAAASY!

Best tires Ive ever owned for spirited driving, wet or dry. My Mazda is a good handling car & these tires maximize its handling & cornering abilities. Surprisingly, they have a very comfortable & quiet ride for such a low profile tire. The wear appears pretty good after 10K miles.

The only downside is that theyre unsuitable for ice & snow & here in PA - thats a problem.

...What is also surprising is that for a treadwear of 220, the tyre has still a lot of thread left although I was recording temperatures of up to 60 C for the sidewall, which is extremely high for a non-competition tyre...

I bought this set of tyre for track use. It was a debate among magazines/community if it would be better to go wider in tread width as 215 is very narrow for track usage, but then again the 86 has such a low torque that putting a wider tyre would possibly make it slower. As of now, I still don't know what works best since I haven't tried a wider tread tyre.

As for the current tyre and diameter, I believe the P-Zero Nero is THE BEST hybrid tyre for track usage. By hybrid, I mean one that is not intentionally made for the track (like Bridgestone RE11, Dunlop Direzza & BF Goodrich Rival, etc), but can perform almost up to par with those. Sure track tyres have better grip and let you corner faster, but the Pirelli although it screeches it still doesn't give out. It's grip may not be that good as a track tyre, but it has a linear "loss of grip line" and you pretty much know when you are at the maximum point of adhesion. I have tracked my car with all aids off as well (without even Traction Control) and the car stays planted compared to the street Michelin Primacy tyres that it comes with, which are all over the place (an expected outcome from All-seasons). What is also surprising is that for a treadwear of 220, the tyre has still a lot of thread left although I was recording temperatures of up to 60 C for the sidewall, which is extremely high for a non-competition tyre. It also seems that it gets warmed-up MUCH faster than the Michelin Pilot Super Sports, which take their time to heat up arguably since they are a 300 treadwear tyre.

As for wet running, I wasn't fortunate enough to have some on track, but I had a dump session at Summit Point and another one at VIR, which the tyre was VERY grippy comparison to the rest of the competition, which was using BF Goodrich Rivals or Bridgestone RE11s that were skidding quite a bit.

Overall, I am VERY satisfied with this tyre compound and I would gladly use another set if I wasn't in a stage of trying different new tyre compoun

...Not TOO sticky of tire but the tread wear is excellent for the way I drive - I have 7,000 more miles on these tires than the stock elin Cross-Terrain SUVs.

Great tire! Not TOO sticky of tire but the tread wear is excellent for the way I drive - I have 7,000 more miles on these tires than the stock Advans (went out at 9,000 miles) but those are a soft tire. I have a safe 10,000 more miles to go before looking for new ones, so expect 20 - 30,000 miles on these tires with sprited driving.

Great handling in dry, howl slightly when pushing the edge, but very predictable.

Wet traction in the first 5,000 miles excellent but drop rapidly after that to o.k. handling - they like to hydroplane and are somewhat slippery.

Snow traction is good, granted I have a AWD car but these were loads better than the stock tires I had.
