Does this tire fit your vehicle?

Tires are designed specifically for different vehicles and wheel sizes. Tell us about your vehicle or the specific size you want so we can help find the right tires for you.

The Potenza RE92 is Bridgestone's High Performance All-Season tire that became popular because of its extensive use as Original Equipment on sports cars, sporty coupes and performance sedans. The Potenza RE92 is designed to combine a smooth quiet ride, predictable handling and all-season traction, even in light snow.

The Potenza RE92 molds an all-season tread compound into a computer-enhanced symmetric tread design to minimize tread noise while interlocking triangulated tread blocks and circumferential tread grooves provide traction in dry, wet and wintry conditions.

The tire's internal structure features twin steel belts reinforced by spirally wrapped nylon belt edge strips (for H-speed rated sizes) or a full, spirally wrapped cap ply along with single belt edge strips (for V-speed rated and higher applications). The Potenza RE92 belt package stabilizes the tread area to enhance wear and high-speed capability. The Potenza RE92 radial's polyester cord body helps deliver a smooth ride along with responsive handling.

Tire Rack Test Results Bridgestone Potenza RE92

The Tire Rack Team conducted several annual Ride & Drive tests with one specific goal in mind...to evaluate whether or not winter / snow tires were capable of being installed on a vehicle’s drive axle when Original Equipment All-Season tires were retained on the non-drive axle.

While it appears that common sense would dictate drivers would want all four tires on their vehicle to have the same traction and handling capabilities, the tradition of using winter / snow tires only on the vehicle’s drive axle still lingers on. And while most drivers would agree that today’s All-Season radials far exceed the capabilities of yesterday’s bias rib tires when it comes to dry, wet and light snow traction, many don’t realize that today’s winter / snow tires have progressed even further to provide superior snow and ice traction compared to yesterday’s bias ply winter lug tires.

In order to get a better understanding of the dry road handling of All-Season and winter / snow tires, and their ability to be mixed together, our most recent Ride & Drive for the newest members of The Tire Rack’s sales, customer service and marketing teams compared Bridgestone’s low profile winter tire, the Blizzak MZ-01, to their widely used Original Equipment High Performance All-Season tire, the Potenza RE92. We used 205/55R16 sized tires mounted on 16"x7.5" wheels fitted to three 2001 Lexus IS300 sport sedans.

Bridgestone Potenza RE92

Bridgstone Potenza RE92 on Lexus IS300 Sport Sedan
High Performance All-Season Bridgestone Potenza RE92 Easy to drive through the lane change.

The Potenza RE92 is a High Performance All-Season tire that is used as Original Equipment on a wide variety of sports coupes and sedans.

On the outside, the Potenza RE92 features a 5-rib block independent tread design to provide the biting edges necessary to enhance foul weather traction. On the inside, the Potenza RE92 features a rounded casing shape to provide predictable handling, and uses spiral-wrapped nylon to reinforce its twin steel belts to enhance handling and provide high speedhigh-speed durability while it helps maintain ride comfort. Depending on their size and anticipated application, Potenza RE92 Plus tires are S-, H-, or V-speed rated. The Potenza RE92 tires we used for this test were H-speed rated.

On the road, the Potenza RE92 has been praised for its good ride, low noise and responsive real world handling. On the track it was rated as responsive and predictable while providing good handling and holding the car right on its desired path (close to the cones) through the double lane change.

Bridgestone Blizzak MZ-01

The Bridgestone Blizzak MZ-01 tires were developed to allow drivers of sports coupes and sedans (which come from the factory equipped with low profile tires mounted on the large diameter alloy wheels) to maintain their vehicle’s sporty appearance while providing enhanced snow and ice traction.

Bridgstone Blizzak MZ-01 on Lexus IS300 Sport Sedan
Studdless Winter Bridgestone Blizzak MZ-01 A little more steering input required.

The Blizzak MZ-01 features a directional tread design split by a wide circumferential center groove to help maintain good traction on wet and slush-covered roads while its zigzag sipes and independent tread blocks provide the edges to help bite through snow. It also features Bridgestone’s Link Multicell Compound which is glass fiber reinforced to enhance vehicle stability on dry roads while helping to disperse water to reduce the risk of slipping on the thin surface film of water that makes ice so dangerous. This allows the Blizzak MZ-01 winter radial to approach the traction provided by a studded tire on ice...without the use of studs.

On the road, the Blizzak MZ-01 provided good ride and noise qualities, but offered less steering response than the Potenza RE92. On the track, the Blizzak MZ-01 winter / snow tires provided predictable handling, but when driven at the same speeds as the Potenza RE92, they required more steering input than the Potenza RE92s and were not able to hold the car close to the cones that defined the lanes of our double lane change.

Bridgestone Potenza RE92 (Front) and Blizzak MZ-01 (Rear) Combination

Bridgstone Potenza RE92 Front and Blizzak MZ-01 Rear on Lexus IS300 Sport Sedan
Combination of Potenza RE92 (front) and Blizzak MZ-01 (rear) Dangerous oversteer in an emergency.

On the track at slow speeds (well below either of the tires’ limits), the All-Season Potenza RE92 and Blizzak MZ-01 winter tire combination provided what felt like normal handling. But as the test speeds increased, the only conditions in which this combination felt acceptable for were straight linestraight-line acceleration and braking. We found that when driven anywhere near their limit (through our 40-45 mph double lane change), the winter / snow tires reached their handling and traction limits before the All-Season tires, allowing our rear-wheel drive Lexus IS300 to oversteer and fishtail uncomfortably.

While our evaluation conclusively showed why matching tires is desirable to maintain the vehicle’s handling balance when it’s required to be pushed to its limit, it’s important to remember that our team members had the benefit of knowing the test course and could not be "surprised" into making the mistakes that any driver might make during a real emergency situation on the road. It’s also important to realize that the difficulty of controlling a vehicle increases as the speed climbs, so what we felt on our test track at 40 mph is multiplied when driving on the highway at 60 mph.

NOTE: If we could have added a few inches of snow over a layer of ice to this track evaluation, the test vehicle’s handling traits would be reversed. The tires that grip better on dry pavement would slip in the snow, and the tires that slip on dry pavement would provide better grip in the snow. Therefore the handling characteristics of our rear-wheel drive test vehicle on dry and wet roads (oversteer) vs. snow-covered roads (understeer) would result in a vehicle that would be difficult to control and drive and would feel as though it had a "split personality" at the limit in all weather conditions.

Bridgestone Reviews

Driver experiences vary with the Bridgestone Potenza RE92. Dry traction stands out, with many ratings in the 9-10 range for confident cornering and stability. Wet performance raises concerns, as scores dip to 0-5 in hydroplaning resistance and traction, with some drivers noting instability in heavy rain. Comfort receives mixed feedback, with ratings split between smooth rides (7-9) and complaints about noise or harshness (3-6). Treadwear shows inconsistency, with scores ranging from 0-10-some praise longevity, while others report premature wear. As an all-season tire, its dry capabilities align with intended use, but wet and comfort limitations may affect satisfaction for drivers prioritizing year-round versatility.

...Dry traction is very impressive as well as Cornering...

Yes these tires are expensive and I would not purchase them again because of the price. Despite the bad reviews these tires are not horrible. The Negative reviews are mostly based on perceived performance expectations based on correlation to the price of these tires, these tires are expensive because they are mostly fitted as OEM tires. Bridgestone like many other companies who supply OEM tires to auto manufacturers know that there are some people out there who will shell out the dough for whatever model of tire was OEM on their vehicle. While the segment of the of the market that choses to get whatever model tires was on their car when new may be small it is still lucrative. The price of these tires is all marketing and nothing else.

Disregarding the price point and in an unbiased opinion based solely on performance I find these Bridgestone Potenzas to be above average in every regard except for wet traction. Tread Life was pretty good for a low profile 160 rated tire, I got 32,000 miles and could have made them last another 3-4k if I wanted to push it. Tread wear was relatively even except for the outermost block of tread which was well into the wear bars overall thought the tires had on average 3/32 left. Noise level was was almost silent for the first 15-20k miles and even at 32k miles was acceptable. Dry traction is very impressive as well as Cornering. Steering performance was acceptable as well as Ride Comport. Wet traction is the achilles heel for these tires as even when new the wet traction left much to be desired for and when I replace them at 32K because they got kinda scary at that point. I can't comment on Snow or ice since I live in Hawaii. I replaced the Bridgestones with Michellin Piolt Exaltos PE2s and will give a review of the Michellins shortly.

...Dry tractions not terrible, although its relatively easy to get wheel spin in 2nd gear. Turning and responsiveness on dry isnt bad. Im not afraid to take a corner at higher-than-normal speeds...

I dont think this tire is as monstrously terrible as some revies claim.. From my experience, Ive driven 45k+ on these, and I believe I can still get 10-15k more. Earlier on traction was better, but now theyre crap, especially on wet roads. I cant even go up a medium incline from a stop if the surface is wet. Im super cautious when conditions are wet-- no confidence whatsoever. Dry tractions not terrible, although its relatively easy to get wheel spin in 2nd gear. Turning and responsiveness on dry isnt bad. Im not afraid to take a corner at higher-than-normal speeds. I would NOT purchase these tires if I had the choice. Much better options available for the same $83-$100 range. Looking to purchase BFG Traction T/A H or Bridgestone Potenza RE750 in the future.

...It's more sporty than I expected with quick response in my daily drive...

This is OEM tire on my 05 Civic. It's more sporty than I expected with quick response in mu daily drive. Never have any problem or hydroplaning on this set. This set has 50000 miles on them and they still have 5/32 left. I typically replace them at 3/32, soot may have another 8000 left. Some of the reviews here have too high an expection on it. It depends on driving styles and good rotation more than anything else. For OE tire, they are better than continental touring contact I have before. Will probably buy another set if on sale.

These were the OEMs on my Subaru. They were alright in the beginning, but they had a severe tendency to squeal on turns. Approaching 30k, they began to exhibit a frightening tendency to skid on wet roads. I felt compelled to write about this tire since last friday I almost drifted into the side of the 280 freeway in foggy weather that could have resulted in some serious damage. This is a all-wheel drive vehicle and to lose control says something about the tires. The treadlife on the RE92 are nothing to write home about either. At 33k, I am very close to the wearline and I consider myself an average driver. You should definitely get rid of these before 30k.

These tires came as OE equipment on my WRX. I have no idea who made that purchasing decision for Subaru but they should be fired. This car does not even come CLOSE to being on Par with the performance fo this car. They are dangerous in the rain. Many times Ill be going really slow, turn the wheel and the car just keeps going straight. I have AWD so it shouldnt do this. I would be scared to have these on any other car. I also Autocross and these tires are terrible on performance. My understeer was rediculous and the car rolls over on its sidewalls waaaaay to easily. Save yourself some money and maybe your life and buy better tires.

Very horrible tire. Hydroplaned and spun out of control in moderate rain, even though they have a lot of tread left. Not good in rain at all. Also not great in dry conditions. Have them on a 05 Civic with stick shift and they spin every time I take off. Not recommended for any car, be safe if you have them now. Got new Goodyear Assurance Triple Tread tires even though I have a lot of tread still on the Potenzas.

...In the wet I felt like I was driving on ice...

I am a huge Bridgestone fan so when my RE88 OEMs were out of production I opted for these since I saw them on Preludes. I found out real fast that these tires stink when I fish tailed on my the first semi-spirited turn. In the wet I felt like I was driving on ice. Cannot beleive this tire is even produced under Bridgstone name. Get the RE950s I switched and was much happier.

...Snow traction is horrible. Id go so far to say they are a safety hazard in bad conditions...

Tires came stock on my 2004 WRX. Ive noticed them on many other stock cars, like Mazda Proteges. Bottom line is these tires are total crap. Wet traction is horrific to say the best. Downhill wet stops require heavy use of ABS. If this car wasnt such a performer, Id be sliding off the road all the time. Snow traction is horrible as well. Id go so far to say they are a safety hazard in bad conditions. Dont buy these tires unless they are very, very close to free.

...They are also very hard and poor confortable...

This tire are good, not great, for the first 10k miles. After that, wet traction is really poor and brake the car in a wet down-hill road can be a real problem if you need to make it fast. The tires has now 30k miles and I have to change them without any delay. They are also very hard and poor confortable. Based on the reviews I have read in this site I am going to try the Potenza RE950. Hope I have better experience or it will be my last Brigstone tires. Resuming: I do not recomend Potenza R92 tires to any one.

These were the original equipment on my Maxima and I hate them. Ive heard about the uneven treadwear, and they are definately noisey. Even experienced technicians have problems balancing them. (I had to bring my car to 4 different service stations, including the dealership to have the tires rebalanced!!) The wet traction is terrible, and pray you never have to drive in anything but the lightest snowfall. I replaced these tires with the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S and find them to be a far superior tire in just about every respect.

I am an average to easy going driver.I live in a small town and make a twenty mile trip to a larger community on a bi-weekly basis. I have had the tires rotated and balanced and all required service performed on my original owner 2001 Toyota Camry XLE . At my last oil change my local dealer told me that I needed new tires. The mileage at that time was 23,300. I checked my warranty information, spoke with my dealer. They

have researched my service records, photographed my tires and e-mailed all information to the Toyota Rep.I have insisted they compensate/reimburse me for the poor tread wear of these Brigestone Potenza RE 92 tires. I am still awaiting response from Toyota. I understand from reading several web sites that Toyota is generally less than cooperative in the customer complaint and dissatisfaction department. Heads up Toyota owners.

This was my first Toyota, it may be my last. Still to be determined......

These are the first 17" tires I have owned and tread wear has been consistent with other OE tires that I have had on new vehicles. 30K seems about right for an OE tire. I was very displeased with the wet tire traction though. Never had a hydroplaning issue, but we didnt get much standing water where I am at. The biggest problem was starting traction in light rains. It took very little effort to get the tire to break free when taking off.
