Does this tire fit your vehicle?

Tires are designed specifically for different vehicles and wheel sizes. Tell us about your vehicle or the specific size you want so we can help find the right tires for you.

The Potenza RE92 is Bridgestone's High Performance All-Season tire that became popular because of its extensive use as Original Equipment on sports cars, sporty coupes and performance sedans. The Potenza RE92 is designed to combine a smooth quiet ride, predictable handling and all-season traction, even in light snow.

The Potenza RE92 molds an all-season tread compound into a computer-enhanced symmetric tread design to minimize tread noise while interlocking triangulated tread blocks and circumferential tread grooves provide traction in dry, wet and wintry conditions.

The tire's internal structure features twin steel belts reinforced by spirally wrapped nylon belt edge strips (for H-speed rated sizes) or a full, spirally wrapped cap ply along with single belt edge strips (for V-speed rated and higher applications). The Potenza RE92 belt package stabilizes the tread area to enhance wear and high-speed capability. The Potenza RE92 radial's polyester cord body helps deliver a smooth ride along with responsive handling.

Tire Rack Test Results Bridgestone Potenza RE92

The Tire Rack Team conducted several annual Ride & Drive tests with one specific goal in mind...to evaluate whether or not winter / snow tires were capable of being installed on a vehicle’s drive axle when Original Equipment All-Season tires were retained on the non-drive axle.

While it appears that common sense would dictate drivers would want all four tires on their vehicle to have the same traction and handling capabilities, the tradition of using winter / snow tires only on the vehicle’s drive axle still lingers on. And while most drivers would agree that today’s All-Season radials far exceed the capabilities of yesterday’s bias rib tires when it comes to dry, wet and light snow traction, many don’t realize that today’s winter / snow tires have progressed even further to provide superior snow and ice traction compared to yesterday’s bias ply winter lug tires.

In order to get a better understanding of the dry road handling of All-Season and winter / snow tires, and their ability to be mixed together, our most recent Ride & Drive for the newest members of The Tire Rack’s sales, customer service and marketing teams compared Bridgestone’s low profile winter tire, the Blizzak MZ-01, to their widely used Original Equipment High Performance All-Season tire, the Potenza RE92. We used 205/55R16 sized tires mounted on 16"x7.5" wheels fitted to three 2001 Lexus IS300 sport sedans.

Bridgestone Potenza RE92

Bridgstone Potenza RE92 on Lexus IS300 Sport Sedan
High Performance All-Season Bridgestone Potenza RE92 Easy to drive through the lane change.

The Potenza RE92 is a High Performance All-Season tire that is used as Original Equipment on a wide variety of sports coupes and sedans.

On the outside, the Potenza RE92 features a 5-rib block independent tread design to provide the biting edges necessary to enhance foul weather traction. On the inside, the Potenza RE92 features a rounded casing shape to provide predictable handling, and uses spiral-wrapped nylon to reinforce its twin steel belts to enhance handling and provide high speedhigh-speed durability while it helps maintain ride comfort. Depending on their size and anticipated application, Potenza RE92 Plus tires are S-, H-, or V-speed rated. The Potenza RE92 tires we used for this test were H-speed rated.

On the road, the Potenza RE92 has been praised for its good ride, low noise and responsive real world handling. On the track it was rated as responsive and predictable while providing good handling and holding the car right on its desired path (close to the cones) through the double lane change.

Bridgestone Blizzak MZ-01

The Bridgestone Blizzak MZ-01 tires were developed to allow drivers of sports coupes and sedans (which come from the factory equipped with low profile tires mounted on the large diameter alloy wheels) to maintain their vehicle’s sporty appearance while providing enhanced snow and ice traction.

Bridgstone Blizzak MZ-01 on Lexus IS300 Sport Sedan
Studdless Winter Bridgestone Blizzak MZ-01 A little more steering input required.

The Blizzak MZ-01 features a directional tread design split by a wide circumferential center groove to help maintain good traction on wet and slush-covered roads while its zigzag sipes and independent tread blocks provide the edges to help bite through snow. It also features Bridgestone’s Link Multicell Compound which is glass fiber reinforced to enhance vehicle stability on dry roads while helping to disperse water to reduce the risk of slipping on the thin surface film of water that makes ice so dangerous. This allows the Blizzak MZ-01 winter radial to approach the traction provided by a studded tire on ice...without the use of studs.

On the road, the Blizzak MZ-01 provided good ride and noise qualities, but offered less steering response than the Potenza RE92. On the track, the Blizzak MZ-01 winter / snow tires provided predictable handling, but when driven at the same speeds as the Potenza RE92, they required more steering input than the Potenza RE92s and were not able to hold the car close to the cones that defined the lanes of our double lane change.

Bridgestone Potenza RE92 (Front) and Blizzak MZ-01 (Rear) Combination

Bridgstone Potenza RE92 Front and Blizzak MZ-01 Rear on Lexus IS300 Sport Sedan
Combination of Potenza RE92 (front) and Blizzak MZ-01 (rear) Dangerous oversteer in an emergency.

On the track at slow speeds (well below either of the tires’ limits), the All-Season Potenza RE92 and Blizzak MZ-01 winter tire combination provided what felt like normal handling. But as the test speeds increased, the only conditions in which this combination felt acceptable for were straight linestraight-line acceleration and braking. We found that when driven anywhere near their limit (through our 40-45 mph double lane change), the winter / snow tires reached their handling and traction limits before the All-Season tires, allowing our rear-wheel drive Lexus IS300 to oversteer and fishtail uncomfortably.

While our evaluation conclusively showed why matching tires is desirable to maintain the vehicle’s handling balance when it’s required to be pushed to its limit, it’s important to remember that our team members had the benefit of knowing the test course and could not be "surprised" into making the mistakes that any driver might make during a real emergency situation on the road. It’s also important to realize that the difficulty of controlling a vehicle increases as the speed climbs, so what we felt on our test track at 40 mph is multiplied when driving on the highway at 60 mph.

NOTE: If we could have added a few inches of snow over a layer of ice to this track evaluation, the test vehicle’s handling traits would be reversed. The tires that grip better on dry pavement would slip in the snow, and the tires that slip on dry pavement would provide better grip in the snow. Therefore the handling characteristics of our rear-wheel drive test vehicle on dry and wet roads (oversteer) vs. snow-covered roads (understeer) would result in a vehicle that would be difficult to control and drive and would feel as though it had a "split personality" at the limit in all weather conditions.

Bridgestone Potenza RE92 Reviews

Driver experiences vary with the Bridgestone Potenza RE92. Dry traction stands out, with many ratings in the 9-10 range for confident cornering and stability. Wet performance raises concerns, as scores dip to 0-5 in hydroplaning resistance and traction, with some drivers noting instability in heavy rain. Comfort receives mixed feedback, with ratings split between smooth rides (7-9) and complaints about noise or harshness (3-6). Treadwear shows inconsistency, with scores ranging from 0-10-some praise longevity, while others report premature wear. As an all-season tire, its dry capabilities align with intended use, but wet and comfort limitations may affect satisfaction for drivers prioritizing year-round versatility.

...The tires handle well in both wet and dry conditions in my car and have responded perfectly to the few emergency maneuvers I have had with them...

This is the OEM tire for my first-generation Honda Insight hybrid and I consider it about the only tire for this car because of the low rolling resistance on a car that can't afford to give up much horsepower to friction.

The tires handle well in both wet and dry conditions in my car and have responded perfectly to the few emergency maneuvers I have had with them. I'm not so impressed with the way my car handles in snow/slush/mud however - though I suspect it is the narrower track of the rear axle causing the squirmy feeling in the back not these tires.

I keep a pretty close eye on my tire pressure and have been running the max pressure on the sidewall, but lately have taken to running the pressure recommended by Honda. The tires are wearing uniformly but a little less in the center than on the shoulders. I prefer a tire that wears dead flat.

While driving at night I hit something in the road maybe the size of a muffler hanger (it wasn't large enough for me to see at 65) and my rear tire exploded. I can't help but wonder if another tire might have survived that encounter a bit more gracefully, but I never did find what I hit so it's hard to tell if the dramatic failure was excessive.

All in all, I'm not sure I'm thrilled with the tires, but they're at least decent in my application. I expect to get at least another 20k miles before replacing any for wear.

...It's more sporty than I expected with quick response in my daily drive...

This is OEM tire on my 05 Civic. It's more sporty than I expected with quick response in mu daily drive. Never have any problem or hydroplaning on this set. This set has 50000 miles on them and they still have 5/32 left. I typically replace them at 3/32, soot may have another 8000 left. Some of the reviews here have too high an expection on it. It depends on driving styles and good rotation more than anything else. For OE tire, they are better than continental touring contact I have before. Will probably buy another set if on sale.

...These are the best bald tires and they are handling great right up to the end...

I bought by 09 Outback used with 30k miles on it, so I assume these tires were factory installed. I'm replacing my wonderful baldies tomorrow and had to drive home tonight in 3 inches of snow. I am astounded that I actually passed a car (Saab) that got stuck on an incline and even made it up my street and unplowed driveway with no problems. These are the best bald tires and they are handling great right up to the end. It doesn't appear they make my tire size any longer and the price for comps is very high so I'm hoping my new Hankook's handle near what I have experienced with these great tires in this crazy New England weather. I've had great traction in rain and all kinds of snow (remember the blizzard of feb 2013, yeah I had 36 inches of snow at my house). I haven't had noise problems and truly haven't taken the best care of them. Don't understand the poor ratings other than wrong tire pressure/balance or just a bad batch. I will miss these tires!

I had three close calls with these tires trying to gradually slow down from only 30-mph. These tires have terrible traction; The rubber must be too hard. The tires currently have a lot of tred left, but I am forced to replace them because I had some serious close calls putting my life in danger because the tires would not stop the car, instead I would slide; and one time I slid into traffic [Luckily there were no cars coming at the time]. Terrible traction.

These tires came stock on my Civic. They ----. Don't buy them, there are far better options for less money. My biggest gripes with these tires are the wet traction. These would spin out all the time in wet weather. Starting on a hill was very tricky due to the poor traction. That made me feel uncomfortable with turns and bends in wet weather as well, so I'd take turns slower than I would with other tires.
As for cold weather. These tires were horrible in the snow, slush and ice. The rubber got really hard and even in cold/dry weather the tires performed poorly.

As for warm dry weather...they are ok. No real complaints. Not too noisy, not too hard. Average.

Overall, they are poor in the wet, cold, snow and slush. For other conditions they are average. There are better tires available for less money.

...They are borderline useless on wet roads, too...

Okay, there are highly mixed reviews for these tires on this site. I understand that these are 'all-season' tires, and that an all-season tire cannot be great in all conditions. These tires, however, do not belong on snow and/or ice-covered roads. They are borderline useless on wet roads, too. They do handle very well on dry roads. The noise and ride quality are not strong points to these tires. On the plus side my tires have about 38k mi on them and there is a lot of treadwear remaining.

And can you believe the replacement cost?! These are very expensive tires.

Just before the winter of 2011 I put Blizzak LMs on the car: Love them in the snow. No comparison, but then again you would not expect an all-season performance-biased tire to compare to a made-for-snow performance tire. The RE92s are never going back on this car. The LMs are staying on the OEM wheels for winter (New England) driving and Conti Extreme Contact DWs are going on an aftermarket set. I will be submitting reviews for both the LMs and DWs.

Bridgestone can't be selling many RE92s in the replacement tire market. They are that bad.

...Horrible wet or snow traction, and tread life is nonexistent...

Why OEs like Lexus keep putting this tire on their cars at the factory is completely beyond me. This is the worst tire ever, and for over a grand for a set of four every 20,000 miles it just defies logic. Horrible wet or snow traction, and tread life is nonexistent. I have awesome 20" Bridgestone Alenzas on my Tahoe (first set went 86k in DC hard driving and I only replaced them when the rubber got so hard they squealed on corners--see that review), so I know Bridgestone can make great tires. Sadly, the RE92 is not one of them.
The dealer put the second set on my mother's car because she didn't know any better; now she needs a third set and the car only has 28k on it! That's two sets of RE92s in 28k! At almost $300 a tire! Bridgestone should be ashamed.
Replacing these with the Continental CWS. Will review them after 10k.

...The ride of the Lexus on rough pavement and dirt roads is very disappointing due to the rough, bumpy ride characteristics of the tires. This may simply be a result of the low height ratio of the tires and not the fault of Bridgestone. It seems a bit ridiculous that manufacturers equip new vehicles with this style of tire (ie low height ratio) knowing that the ride quality( comfort and noise) on bumpy pavements will be predictably poor.

De-lamination of the tread on the inner 1/5 of all 4 tires is occurring. The tires are going back to the dealer for warranty return. I would estimate that 30% of potential tread life is remaining on the tires. It will be interesting to see how Bridgestone handles my warranty claim. The tires have been rotated every spring (I switch to winter tires in early winter every year). ...It isnt all that noisy but is very stiff and ride comfort is just plain bad in my honda...

When i bought this car used the dealer had these tires put on as an O.E. replacement, so they were basically new for me. I would like to say to anyone looking to buy this tire that: 1. It isnt all that noisy but is very stiff and ride comfort is just plain bad in my honda. 2. Dry and wet traction to me is average, nothing more. I've been able to get my car to slip on wet pavement easily before. 3. biggest complaint i have with the tire; NOT a snow or ice tire whatsoever. You will risk getting into an accident with these potenzas. I had accelerated a little too much on a turn and found my self facing sideways in the opposite lane, thank --- no one was coming at me. Maybe it's my car but I've now gotten snow tires and haven't had the slightest problem in this harsh Midwest winter. 4. The tires can feel sluggish and "disconnected" to the road at times, i drive hard at times and i feel i'm just not getting the full power outta my car because of these tires. 5. with an alignment change and regular tire rotation i have noticed a vibration in the car when exceeding 45mph, i don't believe that this is acceptable because my snow tires do not do this. I know for a fact there are better tires for a cheaper price tag so save yourself the time and continue looking.
