April 18, 2003 Tires tested: Vehicles used: While most sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and pickup trucks spend the majority of their life on the road, many of them will also be asked to drive on grassy fields, gravel roads and dirt trails. In order to perform in all of these different driving environments, tire manufacturers have developed On-/Off-Road All-Terrain tires that are designed to provide traction for driving both on and off the road. On-/Off-Road All-Terrain tires combine the physical size and strength required for SUVs and pickup applications with the appropriate sidewall styling and the more aggressive tread designs required for off-road driving. Also important to drivers living in the snowbelt, On-/Off-Road All-Terrain tires typically provide more snow traction than Highway All-Season tires. Several tire manufacturers have introduced economically priced On-/Off-Road All-Terrain tires that are designed to provide on- and off-road traction at an attractive price. In order to get a better understanding of the capabilities of these value-oriented On-/Off-Road All-Terrain light truck tires, Tire Rack Team conducted a Real World Road Ride comparing the Kumho Road Venture AT 825, Sumitomo HTR Sport A/T and Yokohama Geolandar A/T+II tires. We used the P255/70R16 sized tires mounted on 16"x8.0" wheels and fitted to three 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs. Kumho Road Venture AT 825 The Road Venture AT 825 radial features an aggressive tread pattern for off-road traction with a continuous center rib to promote tracking and stability. Full depth circumferential zigzag grooves, along with lateral grooves and sipes help reduce the possibility of hydroplaning and provide dry and wet traction on and off the road. The tread design features siped independent blocks and tapered grooves to help bite into loose surfaces while ejecting dirt and snow. On the inside, the Venture AT 825 combines twin steel belts reinforced with nylon belt edge strips to enhance durability and high speed capability, while polyester cord reinforced sidewalls provide an even ride. On the road, the Road Venture AT 825 radials provided the softest ride quality and did the best job of cushioning the tire's impacts with expansion joints and tar strips. However, some of that softness was reflected in the tire's real world handling where it allowed the vehicle to be jostled by uneven pavement and road undulations. The Road Venture AT 825 radial's tread design also generated the most noise of the three tires in this test. Sumitomo HTR Sport A/T The HTR Sport A/T radial's silica-enhanced all-season tread compound is molded into a tread pattern that features a center rib for stability, large shoulder blocks for responsive handling, and wide, wedge shaped lateral grooves to enhance wet traction and reduce the risk of hydroplaning. The HTR Sport A/T radial's tread block siping and shoulder block slots add biting edges to help increase off-road and light snow traction. Internally, the HTR Sport A/T radial's twin steel belts are reinforced by JointLess Band (JLB) technology which uses spirally wound nylon cord reinforcement to provide long term durability while it reduces weight and helps provide a more uniform ride quality. On the road, the HTR Sport A/T radials provided ride quality and noise levels that are appropriate for its category. The HTR Sport A/T radial's handling was more responsive and provided more stability over uneven pavement and road undulations. Geolandar A/T+II The Geolandar A/T+II uses an enhanced tread compound with increased durability for longer wear while continuing to provide good wet or dry traction. Its tread pattern combines large independent center blocks and long curved shoulder blocks to enhance handling, highway stability and comfort on the road. Then, patented "multi-step" grooves between the tread blocks increase the tire's "biting" edges to enhance traction on desert terrain and loose, off-road surfaces. Sidewall protectors are strategically located on the tire's sidewall to help resist side cuts from rocks and stumps. Internally, the Geolandar A/T+II features twin steel belts reinforced by nylon belt edge strips with a two-ply polyester casing to blend strength with predictable handling. On the road, the Geolandar A/T+II radials provided ride quality and noise levels that are appropriate for its category. The Geolandar A/T+II radial's handling was the most responsive of the three tires in this test and provided the greatest stability over uneven pavement and road undulations.
