The Ventus R-S4 (Z232) is Hankook's Extreme Performance Summer tire developed for the drivers of sports cars, sports coupes and performance sedans looking for near-motorsports levels of grip for track events, autocross and drifting in a tire that can be driven on the street. Like all summer tires, the Ventus R-S4 is not intended to be serviced, stored nor driven in near- and below-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.

Hankook Ventus R-S4The Ventus R-S4 utilizes a new, carbon black and silica high-grip compound molded into a low-void, directional pattern. The wide, continuous center rib creates uninterrupted contact with the road for solid on-center feel and immediate response to steering inputs. Massive outboard shoulder blocks deliver the lateral grip expected for high-g cornering in motorsports events and performance driving, while the chamfered block edges maximize contact with the pavement under load. Wet traction has been addressed through the addition of highly dispersible silica. A functionalized polymer allows the silica to better bond within the compound matrix, while the two main, circumferential grooves allow water to flow through the contact patch for improved resistance to hydroplaning. Heavy rain and standing water may still present challenges to longitudinal and lateral hydroplaning resistance, so drivers should take care and drive cautiously at reduced speeds in these conditions.

The Ventus R-S4's performance begins on the inside. High-modulus bead filler and sidewall reinforcement material reduce sidewall flex for more immediate handling response. A two-ply casing sits beneath two wide, steel belts that support the tread. A two-layer (single layer in some sizes), jointless nylon cover is tuned to optimize handling and stabilize the tread for long life, and an extra reinforcement in the shoulder helps withstand the abuse of performance driving, even in high-camber situations.

Note: Tires exposed to temperatures of 20 degrees F (-7 degrees C) or lower must be permitted to gradually return to temperatures of at least 40 degrees F (5 degrees C) for at least 24 hours before they are flexed in any manner, such as by adjusting inflation pressures, mounting them on wheels, or using them to support, roll or drive a vehicle.

Flexing of the specialized rubber compounds used in Extreme Performance Summer tires during cold-weather use can result in irreversible compound cracking. While compound cracking is not a warrantable condition because it occurs as the result of improper use or storage, tires exhibiting compound cracking must be replaced.

Hankook Ventus R-S4 Reviews

Customers say the Hankook Ventus R-S4 delivers excellent dry traction with consistent grip and predictable handling, making it a top choice for track days, autocross, and endurance racing. Wet performance earns praise for decent grip in light rain, though some note reduced confidence in standing water. Treadwear stands out as exceptional, with many users reporting lasting through multiple heat cycles and extended track use while maintaining performance. ...I was amazed that I could go almost as fast in the wet as in the dry. Only had a small slide once in the wet. Prodigious grip all day long...

These tires have been an awesome addition to my car. The soft rubber creates a much smoother ride on my commute to/from work. They are much more compliant than the tires I previously had.

As for track handling, I've put one track day on them but was super impressed with their grip both wet and dry. My last track day was one where we got the first session in the dry, then it started raining for the rest of the day. I was amazed that I could go almost as fast in the wet as in the dry. Only had a small slide once in the wet. Prodigious grip all day long. Zero to no fade once they quickly heated up. Pushed them hard in the corners and brake zones and could put the car where I wanted all day long. I would definitely purchase them again.

...Not a good rain tire for street or track compared to my Michelin PSS tires anyway, but that's expected of this category of tire...

I did some street driving to just break in the tires before heading to the track with them. Not a good rain tire for street or track compared to my Michelin PSS tires anyway, but that's expected of this category of tire. All other aspects except comfort and noise on the street were pretty good. On track, this tire was incredible, but again I'm comparing to Michelin PSS. They didn't get greasy, just a very mild fall off on the last couple laps. I was at Mont Tremblant circuit for two days with them. Grip and recovery were great. These tire moan more than squeal at the limit, but you can hear them and recovery is easy after breaking loose. Wear seems to be ok so far, but too early to tell. Highly recommended so far. I was at 37 psi hot (after a cool down lap) and they seemed to like that pressure on my car at least. I'm running a 265/35-18 square setup.

Customers scoring 9s and 10s praise the RS4's outstanding dry grip and track-ready consistency, with many highlighting its "prodigious" cornering stability and predictable breakaway. Endurance racers note exceptional wear through multiple heat cycles, while autocrossers appreciate communicative handling. Though slightly behind top-tier 200TW tires in ultimate stickiness, its durability and value make it a favorite for high-performance driving.

...Lateral grip is on par with or better than RS3 v1 while also having a stiffer sidewall for crisp turn in. Straight line grip is excellent as well, in both acceleration and deceleration...

Car is a 3200# (with driver), 290whp E36M3. Having driven numerous high performance tires on this car over the past 5 years I can say these are hands down the best, knocking the RS3 v.1 off it's perch for me. As usual with the RS series of tire, the wear is excellent. I have had 3 autocrosses, 1 track day, a handful of canyon runs, and about 5k regular miles and have well over half tread left. Lateral grip is on par with or better than RS3 v1 while also having a stiffer sidewall for crisp turn in. Straight line grip is excellent as well, in both acceleration and deceleration. These tires are very communicative, making handling at the limit easy to manage. You can really feel the tires working in the corners and they respond well to smooth mid corner adjustments. They make little to no noise in cruising or at the limit in my experience, more of a scrub sound than anything. As with the RS3 v1, these are very heat resistant and difficult to grease out, but they are much easier to get up to & maintain the proper temp.

My only negative comment would be that they do seem somewhat sensitive to tire pressures. A change of 2 psi caused a dramatic difference in the feel of the car on subsequent runs. Not necessarily slower, but different. This may cause you to constantly tweak pressures to find your style.

...Dry grip exceeded my previous R-S3's and the tires were easy to drive at the limit...

I bought these tires to be my autocross tires for 2017 and previously used the R-S3. I also daily drive my Evo X about 40 miles each day in mixed driving. These tires have exceeded my expectations in terms of wear, grip and response/handling at the limit. I did an autocross this past weekend and while grip was marginal during the first half of my first run, by my 2nd run onwards the tires were magical. Dry grip exceeded my previous R-S3's and the tires were easy to drive at the limit. The tires also did not become greasy by my 3rd and 4th runs. On the road, road noise is marginal and I've seen no impact in my gas mileage compared to the R-S3. I run a 245/40/18 size and will definitely buy these again. Great tire!!!

...They have better grip than the R-S3's... Fall off is minimal later into the sessions. Towards the end of my sessions I see about a 4% drop off in lap time...if my math is correct.

I have about 18 x 20 minute sessions on these tires over 3 weekends. I have an event in June that should give it a good test in the Texas heat. In Summary, they seem like a rock solid tire for the track. I'm sure they would do well in autocross if I was into that kind of thing. In early June they'll get a really good hot weather test since I'm in Texas and it'll probably be in the 90's. :)

Some improvements I noted:
1) They have better grip than the R-S3's
2) They warm up much quicker
3) I've had no tread chunking issues like I had with the R-S3's at times
4) The tire wear is low and they hold up phenomenally well (I'm maybe halfway through their life. So I expect a few more track weekends before getting replacement tires.)
5) Fall off is minimal later into the sessions. Towards the end of my sessions I see about a 4% drop off in lap time...if my math is correct.

These things wear like iron. Made it more than 10 track days @ 2+ hours per day.

These things wear like iron. Made it more than 10 track days @ 2+ hours per day.

They aren't as fast as the rt 660's or RE71Rs's -- but they will last well more than twice as long. They are THE budget track tire for racing.

I replace these before they cord b/c they stop responding to heat after so many heat cycles and do not perform.

I have this set for track and then use RE71's for time trials or autocross
