The Potenza RE92 is Bridgestone's High Performance All-Season tire that became popular because of its extensive use as Original Equipment on sports cars, sporty coupes and performance sedans. The Potenza RE92 is designed to combine a smooth quiet ride, predictable handling and all-season traction, even in light snow.

The Potenza RE92 molds an all-season tread compound into a computer-enhanced symmetric tread design to minimize tread noise while interlocking triangulated tread blocks and circumferential tread grooves provide traction in dry, wet and wintry conditions.

The tire's internal structure features twin steel belts reinforced by spirally wrapped nylon belt edge strips (for H-speed rated sizes) or a full, spirally wrapped cap ply along with single belt edge strips (for V-speed rated and higher applications). The Potenza RE92 belt package stabilizes the tread area to enhance wear and high-speed capability. The Potenza RE92 radial's polyester cord body helps deliver a smooth ride along with responsive handling.

Tire Rack Test Results Bridgestone Potenza RE92

The Tire Rack Team conducted several annual Ride & Drive tests with one specific goal in mind...to evaluate whether or not winter / snow tires were capable of being installed on a vehicle’s drive axle when Original Equipment All-Season tires were retained on the non-drive axle.

While it appears that common sense would dictate drivers would want all four tires on their vehicle to have the same traction and handling capabilities, the tradition of using winter / snow tires only on the vehicle’s drive axle still lingers on. And while most drivers would agree that today’s All-Season radials far exceed the capabilities of yesterday’s bias rib tires when it comes to dry, wet and light snow traction, many don’t realize that today’s winter / snow tires have progressed even further to provide superior snow and ice traction compared to yesterday’s bias ply winter lug tires.

In order to get a better understanding of the dry road handling of All-Season and winter / snow tires, and their ability to be mixed together, our most recent Ride & Drive for the newest members of The Tire Rack’s sales, customer service and marketing teams compared Bridgestone’s low profile winter tire, the Blizzak MZ-01, to their widely used Original Equipment High Performance All-Season tire, the Potenza RE92. We used 205/55R16 sized tires mounted on 16"x7.5" wheels fitted to three 2001 Lexus IS300 sport sedans.

Bridgestone Potenza RE92

Bridgstone Potenza RE92 on Lexus IS300 Sport Sedan
High Performance All-Season Bridgestone Potenza RE92 Easy to drive through the lane change.

The Potenza RE92 is a High Performance All-Season tire that is used as Original Equipment on a wide variety of sports coupes and sedans.

On the outside, the Potenza RE92 features a 5-rib block independent tread design to provide the biting edges necessary to enhance foul weather traction. On the inside, the Potenza RE92 features a rounded casing shape to provide predictable handling, and uses spiral-wrapped nylon to reinforce its twin steel belts to enhance handling and provide high speedhigh-speed durability while it helps maintain ride comfort. Depending on their size and anticipated application, Potenza RE92 Plus tires are S-, H-, or V-speed rated. The Potenza RE92 tires we used for this test were H-speed rated.

On the road, the Potenza RE92 has been praised for its good ride, low noise and responsive real world handling. On the track it was rated as responsive and predictable while providing good handling and holding the car right on its desired path (close to the cones) through the double lane change.

Bridgestone Blizzak MZ-01

The Bridgestone Blizzak MZ-01 tires were developed to allow drivers of sports coupes and sedans (which come from the factory equipped with low profile tires mounted on the large diameter alloy wheels) to maintain their vehicle’s sporty appearance while providing enhanced snow and ice traction.

Bridgstone Blizzak MZ-01 on Lexus IS300 Sport Sedan
Studdless Winter Bridgestone Blizzak MZ-01 A little more steering input required.

The Blizzak MZ-01 features a directional tread design split by a wide circumferential center groove to help maintain good traction on wet and slush-covered roads while its zigzag sipes and independent tread blocks provide the edges to help bite through snow. It also features Bridgestone’s Link Multicell Compound which is glass fiber reinforced to enhance vehicle stability on dry roads while helping to disperse water to reduce the risk of slipping on the thin surface film of water that makes ice so dangerous. This allows the Blizzak MZ-01 winter radial to approach the traction provided by a studded tire on ice...without the use of studs.

On the road, the Blizzak MZ-01 provided good ride and noise qualities, but offered less steering response than the Potenza RE92. On the track, the Blizzak MZ-01 winter / snow tires provided predictable handling, but when driven at the same speeds as the Potenza RE92, they required more steering input than the Potenza RE92s and were not able to hold the car close to the cones that defined the lanes of our double lane change.

Bridgestone Potenza RE92 (Front) and Blizzak MZ-01 (Rear) Combination

Bridgstone Potenza RE92 Front and Blizzak MZ-01 Rear on Lexus IS300 Sport Sedan
Combination of Potenza RE92 (front) and Blizzak MZ-01 (rear) Dangerous oversteer in an emergency.

On the track at slow speeds (well below either of the tires’ limits), the All-Season Potenza RE92 and Blizzak MZ-01 winter tire combination provided what felt like normal handling. But as the test speeds increased, the only conditions in which this combination felt acceptable for were straight linestraight-line acceleration and braking. We found that when driven anywhere near their limit (through our 40-45 mph double lane change), the winter / snow tires reached their handling and traction limits before the All-Season tires, allowing our rear-wheel drive Lexus IS300 to oversteer and fishtail uncomfortably.

While our evaluation conclusively showed why matching tires is desirable to maintain the vehicle’s handling balance when it’s required to be pushed to its limit, it’s important to remember that our team members had the benefit of knowing the test course and could not be "surprised" into making the mistakes that any driver might make during a real emergency situation on the road. It’s also important to realize that the difficulty of controlling a vehicle increases as the speed climbs, so what we felt on our test track at 40 mph is multiplied when driving on the highway at 60 mph.

NOTE: If we could have added a few inches of snow over a layer of ice to this track evaluation, the test vehicle’s handling traits would be reversed. The tires that grip better on dry pavement would slip in the snow, and the tires that slip on dry pavement would provide better grip in the snow. Therefore the handling characteristics of our rear-wheel drive test vehicle on dry and wet roads (oversteer) vs. snow-covered roads (understeer) would result in a vehicle that would be difficult to control and drive and would feel as though it had a "split personality" at the limit in all weather conditions.

Customers Say

User feedback reveals the Bridgestone Potenza RE92 delivers confident dry traction, with many ratings in the 7-9 range for responsive handling in its high-performance category. Wet traction shows mixed results, with frequent low scores (0-5) highlighting hydroplaning concerns and reduced grip in heavy rain. Comfort receives praise for smooth ride quality in some cases, though noise levels draw occasional criticism. Treadwear is a consistent pain point, with numerous reports of rapid wear and disappointing tread life even for an all-season tire. While dry performance aligns with expectations for its class, buyers prioritizing wet weather capability or longevity may find limitations.

...Dry traction is very good...

Ive had these tires on for almost 2 years, and am very satisfied. Their now starting to get low on tread and at this point wet traction is bad, as i often spin the tires and hydroplaning is a constant threat. Dry traction is still very good. But when these tires were new they were amazing at everything. I was surprised mostly by their traction in snow depths of 1-4 inches, i was never afraid of going out in the snow, and several times i tried to lose control or slide on purpose but they just kept gripping! Im from New York and drive hard all the time, and these tires have not disapointed me. Overall a very good tire. Even if your a New York driver.

...Turn in is sharp and exact, and I'm talking about high-speed turn in. I turn into Turn One at Texas World Speedway at 110 mph, and it goes exactly where you point it... And it is smooth and controllable using power-oversteer from apex to track-out...

This is a great tire. Don't get me wrong, it is not a "Pole Position", but it has very high levels of grip for a "regular" or "all-season" Ultra High Performance tire. Turn in is sharp and exact, and I'm talking about high-speed turn in. I turn into Turn One at Texas World Speedway at 110 mph, and it goes exactly where you point it. Ride comfort is excellent, even at 44 psi, where I run it constantly. And it is smooth and controllable using power-oversteer from apex to track-out. Here in Austin, there are not as many corners that you can play on, as there are in San Diego, with all their clover-leafs, and on- and off-ramps, and I have over 45,000 miles on them now. I am sure that number will go over 50,000. Even in a moderate rain they are very good. I chased down a Honda and a Mercedes at speeds up to 90 mph in the rain and experienced absolutely no hydroplaning at all. Then common sense got the better of me so I backed it down. I've even driven them in snow and on ice and had absolutely no problems because I understand where the limit is. In my favorite play corner in the wet, I am able to induce the exact same characteristics out of the tire but at a lower of grip.

To Millbury Ma: If your everyday car is a Cavalier, with Cosco $30 tires on it, what makes you think you are qualified to review a tire that is capable of 168 MPH? What really happened is you embarrassed yourself TWICE in front of your girlfriend by stabbing the throttle hard because you can't drive. That's the only way the back of the car would jump out. And then you try to bolster your position by getting on a tire website and criticizing the tire. Obviously you wouldn't criticize her car, because then she wouldn't let you drive it any more. If it really is an STI, then you just told the tire-reviewing public that you can't drive a car with 300 HP. I suggest you drive another 200,000 miles or so and privately evaluate 4 or 5 more sets of tires before you write another review.

These tires came on a 1-yr old Outback I bought. After 2 weeks of driving, I cannot wait to get these off. Ive inherited some bad tires on cars before, but these are probably the worst. They squeal when I am turning into my parking spot, I have very little confidence when cornering in dry, and wet traction is non-existent. I cant believe Subaru would accept degrading the perception of their car by putting these things on it.

These tires were original equipment on my Camry and definately the worst tires for wet surfaces and tire wear I ever had. The Camry only has 10,368 original miles on it and 8k of those miles were on the Potenza tires, the rest on snow tires. At 8k miles all the Potenzas looked like they had 35K miles on them. Toyoto should be ashamed to ship cars with these tires! Today the Potenzas came off the car and I invested all Michelin Harmonys for decent wet surface traction, hydroplaning resistance and wear.

These tires are pretty bad in the rain and I would not like to even think about how they do in the snow. I do not have traction control in my truck along with the short trans. and the V8 - so raining creates pretty scary rides. They hydroplan ANYWHERE there is a cm of water...

These tires are definitely the worst of the worst. These tires must have been made with recycled sandwich baggies as the main ingredient. Completely worn through at 25000 miles. These tires are so thin you can see the air in them.

These tires came OEM on my 2005 Outback. Just had the oppty to run them in heavy snow and ice along I-80 in Wyoming. I truly feared for my life with these tires. I was sliding everywhere and had to reduce speed to 25 mph. I was being passed by FWD econo-boxes. I have been home for 24 hours and am already buying new tires (Yokohama Avid TRZ). Dont get these if you ever drive in snow or ice. They are fine on dry pavement.

...These tires are flat out terrible in the wet, and near useless in any kind of snow...

except for the tires lasting about 10k longer than they should have I am deeply dissapointed with them. even though the car is a FWD with 255hp. it shouldnt spin the tires with the lightest hint of acceleration. These tires are flat out terrible in the wet, and near useless in any kind of snow. they do ride ok, and are fairly sharp in response but my michelin X-ice snow tires have better grip in dry, and wet.

my next set will definatly be pilot sports far superior tire that are $60 less a set then the terrible potenzas that are OEM...

I like the handling of the tires on a smooth open highway, However Im not satasfied with the cornering and comfort in city driving. I got a bubble on the sidewall from a pothole and had to buy a new tire. Im not a careless driver, that tire should have held up better. I will definitely try a different brand next time. Lexus should have put a better tire on this car

This tire are good, not great, for the first 10k miles. After that, wet traction is really poor and brake the car in a wet down-hill road can be a real problem if you need to make it fast. The tires has now 30k miles and I have to change them without any delay. They are also very hard and poor confortable. Based on the reviews I have read in this site I am going to try the Potenza RE950. Hope I have better experience or it will be my last Brigstone tires. Resuming: I do not recomend Potenza R92 tires to any one.

Dont ever buy these tires at retail price. The sidewalls roll way too much unless you inflate the tires to at least 40 psi. After half the tread is gone, they are totally unsafe in the snow, and rain performance starts to decrease significantly too. My 195/70 14 winter tires performed just as well as the RE92s when inflated to manufacturers specs.

Since this was the original tires I got them again. The orgianl was ok except wet and it lasted 50k miles so I got these again. But these tires are Terrible ! It squels on cornering more than my older tires. Handling is reduced my Maxima SE into a Camry LE ! Wet performance is NONE ! Total rip-off at this price. Since I paid $660 for all 4 cant even trrow these out !

the only good thing its quiter and smoother than my OEMs whic were better performance.

Did Bridgestone downgraded their RE92 ????

I expected more from these tires... 22,000 miles and two were nearly bald. Then one of them decided to start shedding bits of tread after I picked my daughters up from school one day, prompting me to switch to the spare until I had the time to replace all 4. Traction in any condition has been worse than the 80,000 mile all-season tires I have become accustomed to. These tires cant even handle the power of a four-cylinder Camry automatic accelerating from rest, with only half throttle! Unless you are looking for tires that arent worth the ink you write the check for them with, look elsewhere.
