The Turanza EL400-02 and Turanza EL400 w/UNI-T are Bridgestone's Standard Touring All-Season tires developed to meet the Original Equipment and replacement tire needs of drivers for their sporty coupes, sedans and vans. Turanza EL400 tires are designed to provide a luxury appearance, long wear and responsive handling along with dry, wet and year-round traction, even in light snow.

Bridgestone's Ultimate Network of Intelligent Tire Technology (UNI-T) features three core elements: CO'CS, a Computer Optimized Component System which allows design and manufacturing processes to work more cooperatively, leading to a more effective tire that doesn't significantly sacrifice one area of performance for improvements in another; O-Bead, a rounder bead structure that minimizes overlapped joints in the bead area for improved ride; and L.L. Carbon (Long Link Carbon) which helps the rubber compound resist microscopic tread tearing related to wear.

On the outside, Turanza EL400 tires features their tread rubber compound molded into a symmetric tread design with straight circumferential grooves to balance dry and wet road traction with noise comfort and hydroplaning resistance. On the inside, the Turanza EL400 features twin steel belts for strength and stability with a polyester cord body to enhance ride comfort.

*Specific sizes featuring UNI-T technology are identified as such on the Sizes tab, as well as on the tire's Specs tab.

Why Gamble With Winter Tire Selection When Four of a Kind Always Beats Two Pair? (01:56)

Some drivers still doubt the industry's requirement for equipping front-wheel drive vehicles with matching winter tires all the way around. To address those doubts and demonstrate what can happen when mixed tires reach their limits on hard-packed snow and ice, we did some tests at our local skating rink.

Customers Say

Ratings data demonstrates the Bridgestone Turanza EL400-02 delivers solid dry traction (scores 7-8), with many customers praising its confident handling in dry conditions. However, treadwear raises concerns, with frequent mentions of rapid wear and lower-than-expected tread life. Comfort receives mixed feedback, as some note a smooth ride while others report road noise and harshness. Winter traction shows inconsistent performance, with scores dipping below 5 in icy conditions. Wet traction also draws criticism, with hydroplaning resistance and grip often rated 4-6. While suitable for standard all-season driving, buyers prioritizing longevity or harsh-weather performance may find limitations.

...Great dry handling and wet handling...

Don't understand all the hate for this tire. For an OEM at nearly 30,000 miles of spirited driving it has exceeded expectations. When "newer" has been the best tire ever had for through light snow. Great dry and wet handling. Overly stiff and a little noisy when starting out in cold weather but normally works itself out in a few miles. I will caution that once these tires start to wear the hydroplane resistance goes in a hurry. Still above the wear bars but will take my wife's car in a heavy rain as will now slide very easily across the road. Other than that - excellent tire. Rated "Probably Not" is a reflection of current purchase price. There are much better selections such as the Pirelli Cinturato P7's for less than this tire's price point. As good a tire it may be the cost makes it a poor value as a replacement tire.

...That said, dry performance was acceptable, and it was easy to go around corners at speed. Low-speed maneuvers such as pulling into a parking space, however, sometimes induced squealing, which was pretty embarrassing if I had passengers...

This tire came as OEM equipment on my '15 Camry SE. The Camry is overall a very quiet ride, with little wind noise or other intrusions into the cabin. However, this quiet ride was pretty much ruined by the road noise caused by these tires. My last Camry - a 2010 wearing Nexen tires - was much quieter on the highway. In addition, the tires seem to produce a bit harsher of a ride than I experienced when riding in one of my coworker's Camry (also an SE) that had the Michelin Primacy tires installed. This, combined with the stiffer suspension tuning of the SE, made the ride a bit jarring on rougher roads.
That said, dry performance of this tire was acceptable, and it was easy to go around corners at speed. Low-speed maneuvers such as pulling into a parking space, however, sometimes induced squealing, which was pretty embarrassing if I had passengers. This occurred even when I had the tires inflated to their recommended 35 PSI level.
Wet performance, on the other hand, was noticeably worse. Sometimes I would spin tires with even fairly light throttle - keeping in mind I had the 2.5L 4-cylinder engine, which isn't particularly known for its low-end power. The same applied to snow. I had to drive with a lot of caution in the snow, since it was fairly easy to spin the tires. Cornering grip though, surprisingly, was still acceptable.
I turned the car in before the tires wore out, at 19,000 miles, but I had seen lots of reports of poor tread life. I wouldn't recommend this tire, if you're looking to buy new, but I doubt it would be a deal-breaker for most drivers.

...They're actually not bad in the dry, with decent lateral grip and progressive breakaway characteristics...

These are the OEM tires on my 2014 Jetta TDI. They're actually not bad in the dry, with decent lateral grip and progressive breakaway characteristics. It all goes wrong in the wet though, as lateral grip is so poor in the rain it borderlines on dangerous. Half throttle from a stop in the wet is all I can do before wheelspin sets in. Treadwear has been outstanding, with 38K miles on these tires (almost all highway) and they're only half gone.

At the end of the day though, wet weather performance is so poor that I'm considering junking them and buying something that doesn't have me sliding around so much.

...At 40k miles, the wet traction got awful... had trouble starting at stoplights and the tires kept breaking loose and spinning on wet pavement when they shouldn't have (e.g. uphill at 30mph), as if it was icy (it wasn't)...

came as originals on 09 corolla. was impressed for OE tires for the first 30k miles: very smooth and quiet, never got stuck in the snow, had good cornering grip (dry).

tread wear looked great at 35k miles, but suddenly wore down fast. At 40k miles, the wet traction got awful... had trouble starting at stoplights (its a weak car too) and the tires kept breaking loose and spinning on wet pavement when they shouldn't have (e.g. uphill at 30mph), as if it was icy (it wasn't). tread was about 6/32 at this point.

expect them to start out good, then to suddenly wear down quickly and ----. expect to replace at 6/32 for wet driving (not the recommended 4/32).

...lose all traction in the wet (don't even think about in snow or ice)...

The Bridgestone Turanza EL-400-02 was original equipment on my Mazda5. The tires squeal on dry asphalt, lose all traction in the wet (don't even think about snow or ice), and are cracking substantially with about 30,000 miles on them. From a positive perspective, they're quiet and smooth. They're pretty terrible all around though and I can't wait to get rid of them.

At 13,000 miles tires are almost shot, might get 20,000. Absolutely no traction available in snow, had to buy snow tires to be able to drive the car. Worst Brisdestones I have ever owned, dealership agrees with my opinion; have had Toyotas with Bridgestones for over 30 years (since 1973).

Absolutely no grip for starting, or scarier, stopping, on ice or snow...even minimal amounts, and even with traction control and stability control...all that computer magic is meaningless if there isn't any grip. I'm a gentle drive and I don't drive much, but will be replacing before another winter, even though there is still a lot of tread left. Too many close calls.

...I began having rough rides almost immediately after leaving the showroom that was evident at speeds of 35-45 mph. Accelerating to 55 and above, the ride was smooth...

These tires are OEM on my newly purchased Camry. I began having rough rides almost immediately after leaving the showroom that was evident at speeds of 35-45 mph. Accelerating to 55 and above, the ride was smooth. Took the car in at 375 mph where the mechanics attempted to correct the problem. After two test drives and pulling the tires twice for balancing over 4 hrs., they proclaimed the problem solved. Upon leaving the shop, the problem was worse than ever. My thoughts were the tires had flat spots on them. Another trip back to the dealer and two more hours of balancing resulted in two tires being replaced. The ride is smoother but still not right and it is definitely not due to rough roads as I was told. I strongly recommend paying attention to the tires on any new vehicle and if Bridgestone, don't accept it. It is beyond me why Toyota Company would build a classy fully loaded Camry and deliver it with junk tires. This issue is not resolved as yet.

...At approximately 30k, the tire sounds like we are driving on a tank... riding comfort was huge disappointment...

I have this tire that came OEM on my subaru Legacy. I bought the car new and it is my daily drive. At approximately 30k, the tire sounds like we are driving on a tank. Dry traction was okay, riding comfort was huge disappointment. With this tire, I lost traction while almost hydroplan on a standing water, luckily I was not because the AWD system was good enough to avoid the hydroplanning.

At about 47000, I changed my tires. The EL400-02 almost down to the wear bar, where the fronts were 25%, and the inner part of rear tires busted but far from showing cords or steels. Rear tires was 15%.
Changed the tire to Firestone Firehawk AS, no turning back ever since.

...I tolerated the road noise, since I usually turn up the stereo to drown them out. At highway levels, it's very noisy, but again, I tolerated it well with music...

This review is based on my 47k miles collective experience of these tires that were OEM fitted to my 2012 Mazda3 Skyactiv. My general impression upon these tires is mediocre. During dry environments, the tires are predictable over my time with them. When cornering, they do ok, but upon hard cornering and acceleration (e.g. 25-30mph 120 degree right turn), they chirp and sequel. The same goes for launches around 2K with limited clutch slip. In wet conditions, the performance is very mediocre. It definitely helps that the car itself has traction control, but there are times where I can feel the tire slip, and then the traction tries to mediate the negative effects. I drive somewhat spiritedly but feel that these tires do limit the ability of what the actual car is able to handle, and honestly I'm quite surprised at how well they actually lasted with 47k. I tolerated the road noise, since I usually turn up the stereo to drown them out. At highway levels, it's very noisy, but again, I tolerated it well with music. When I first got the car, I would average around 38mpg combined city & highway (30%/70%) and at 47K, my mpg's are more or less the same. At highway speeds the handling is once again mediocre as I don't have much confidence in them. Turning, changing lanes, and passing they do ok, but I subjectively believe that the steering feel does not instill confidence. In highway windy conditions, you can feel the tires working their way against the friction, and the feel while torelable, is again medicore for handling. Overall, the tires performance much better when newer, and it wasn't until about 25-35k where I started to notice more of the pronounced negative effects. I definitely would not recommend stretching them out this long. Best to save up for some quality tires!

This tire was the OEM tire supplied my leased Solara. You would think that a car with a MSLP of over $30,000.00 would come with tires that last to 40K to 50K miles as cars I leased/purchased in the past have. Toyota definitely made a very bad choice of tires for this car. These tires are so bad that Bridgestone does not even offer a Treadwear Warranty; seems like planned obsolescence at its best!!! Non-OEM Turanza EL400s have a 50k or 70k Treadway Warranty based on speed rating. Makes you wonder "Who is in cahoots with who"??? Not only will I not buy Turanzas in the future, I will think twice about doing any business with Bridgestone after this experience!!!
