The 4x4 Contact is Continental's Crossover/SUV Touring All-Season light truck tire designed to make touring tire looks and handling available for the drivers of premium crossover and sport utility vehicles. Used as Original Equipment on BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche vehicles, the 4x4 Contact combines the large rim diameter sizes appropriate for light trucks with Continental's original ContiTouringContact CH95 style tread design to deliver comfort, handling and all-season traction, even in light snow.

The 4x4 Contact features a silica-enhanced all-season tread compound that helps improve cold weather traction. This compound is molded into a symmetric tread design that provides for the ability to rotate tires to maximize tread life. The tread pattern is also computer-optimized to reduce noise and heavily siped to provide the additional biting edges necessary to enhance traction in light snow. The tire's internal structure features twin steel belts combined with a spirally wound jointless nylon reinforcement to blend high-speed durability with ride uniformity.

NOTE: While Crossover/SUV Touring All-Season light truck tires offer all-season versatility including traction in light snow, tire sizes featuring extremely wide tread widths may limit the traction this type of tire can provide in deep snow.

Customers Say

Drivers find the Continental 4x4 Contact delivers excellent comfort, with many praising its smooth ride and low noise levels. However, treadwear scores (0-10) show widespread dissatisfaction, with rapid wear and disappointing tread life noted as key concerns. Winter traction receives mixed feedback, with some drivers reporting confidence in light snow but struggles in deeper conditions. Wet traction also draws criticism, including hydroplaning risks and inconsistent grip. Dry traction stands out as a strength, with high marks (8-10) for responsive handling and stability. While ideal for all-season touring on crossovers/SUVs, its limitations in harsh winter or wet conditions may require cautious use.

...However, it has been an excellent tire on dry and wet pavements...

The tire was OE when purchased. I drive in mostly an arid climate in Southern California, so I cannot comment on the tire's snow capabilities. However, it has been an excellent tire on both dry and wet pavements. Further, it is comfortable and quiet. Around here the roads are horrible and I feel that the tire takes the beating well. It is certainly a tire I would buy again when the time comes, and based on my ware, it will be a while. They look the same way since purchased. Frankly, I am surprised by all the negative feedback this tire has received.

...For a sport-ute it does amaze me with its comfort and handling, but I really havent driven it as aggressively as I did the 540 so I really cant judge some of the factors in your questionaire...

My responses to cornering stability, dry traction & steering responsiveness are tempered by the fact that I have never really pushed the Cayenne to its limit. It seems a little bulky to push around on our mountain roads compared to my former car, a BMW 540I 6-speed. For a sport-ute it does amaze me with its comfort and handling, but I really havent driven it as aggressively as I did the 540 so I really cant judge some of the factors in your questionaire.

Overall I have been very pleased with the Contact 4X4s that came on the vehicle. However, at 15,000 miles they are starting to emit a slightly noisy rumble at 55-65 mph that disappears at 70. I assume that this is just a function of treadwear. They are definitely smoother and quieter than the Goodyear Wrangler/RTS or Michelin LTX/MS that I had previously tried on my Tahoe, and they do get around quite well in the snow. Actually, I was surprised that they did so well in a recent early-season snow because the tread doesnt look all that aggressive. I am a little concerned that they seem to be wearing quickly. I will probably have to replace them at 20-25,000 miles but I must take into consideration that I am pushing a rather heavy vehicle around some pretty twisty mountain roads in a somewhat aggressive fashion.

I had such a great experience with the Dunlop WInter Sports that I got from you for my BMW, that I wish they made that tire for my Cayenne.

This was OEM on the 2010 Honda CR-V. Tires were rotated at normal intervals. Tread wore out at 22,800 miles after 1 year 3 months. Not what I expect of a set of tires, was not looking to replace tires for at least 55,000 miles.

These tires exhibit a comfortable ride, minimal road noise (some on bad pavement) and yet they deliver good grip and neutral handling...

These OEM tires have been rotated/balanced and car aligned on schedule. No noise or dry handling issues. Although ample tread remained at 22k miles (maybe another 5k tread left to hit the wear bars), the outer side of the tread didn't hold up as well, creating considerable traction issues in wet and snow conditions as the wear on the outer tread prevented water from channeling out from under the tire. All in all, 22k for a set of tires surely seems unacceptable. Have gone with Hancook Ventus AS 265/45R/20 - price was right and reviews seemed strong as well. Will update as we go along.

have worn evenly, are still quite, and look like they should last 8-10,000 miles more.
I inflate the tires with nitrogen, and rotate them every 7,500-8,000 miles.

I have put almost 40,00 miles on these tires so they have lasted longer than I expected. For me these tires displayed nothing really great and nothing really bad. The weakest part of this tire is the wet handling. At highway speeds in the rain they feel like they are about to hydroplane at any moment. They did not fill me with confidence. They do brake quite well in the wet though. If you drive conservatively when it is raining then you will never feel unsafe on these tires. I have driven for miles off-road in sand, dirt, and mud with these tires and have no complaints. I have not driven them in snow. As with almost every tire ... on-road in the dry they were perfect. Smooth, quiet, efficient, handled well, corners great, brakes well etc.

These were OEM tires on the vehicle. They provide very respectable steering feel and cornering ability even for a such big vehicle. Dry traction is also quite good and road noise and ride comfort especially when new definitely befitting luxury vehicle.

...Absolutely undrivable and life threatening in winter conditions, and calling it an all-season tire is a fraud... But do not ever think about driving them in the winter; absolutely life threatening.

These tires came as the OEM tires with my Honda CR-V 2010 AWD. After the first bigger snow storm after my purchase, I decided to check tire traction. Driving uphill in moderate snow was ok because of the AWD. But then I chose a relatively steep road covered with salted snow, driving extremely slowly DOWNHILL and trying to come to a complete stop. The ABS breaks were unable to bring the car to a stop (in fact, I probably would have been better off without the ABS ...). It was sliding down like a tobogan or a sled (at a slow but steady rate). Eventually the road leveled, and I was able to bring the car under my control, out of gravity's. There was no ice whatsoever, only snow/slush. It was kind of scary. Also, similarly very unstable sideways, extremely poor cornering on snow.

Absolutely undrivable and life threatening in winter conditions, and calling it an "all-season" tire is a fraud. These tires are ok in Fall/Summer/Spring. But do not ever think about driving them in the winter; absolutely life threatening.

These tires were OEM and they are absolute junk. Ice traction and light snow traction (cornering and braking) is horrendous. Acceleration in same conditions is acceptable and I have no complaints about deep snow handling. Grooved concrete (dry) performance is terrible as the car floats all over the road requiring constant correction. I can't complain too much about wear as mine have 27k on them now and the tread is about 3/4 gone and after reading other reviews I'm doing much better than others. I definitely would not buy them again and I have now lost confidence in any other Conti product. I had a couple sets of Conti's on my 1996 Volvo 960 and they were superb. I also ran Conti's on my Kawasaki 900 and had no complaints. Needless to say, I am extremely disappointed in this product. I would not buy these tires if a set of 4 cost me $40.00.

Conditions - Autobahn, frequent rain & snow, occasional very high speeds. These tires are good at speeds up to 130MPH on dry pavement but are frightening in heavy rain and slush, even at reduced speeds. They do well in light snow at speed and no problems creeping through deeper stuff (4" +). Problems on ice & with cornering I attribute more to the enormous vehicle weight. Wear is very uneven on the fronts for mostly straight line driving.

These tires came as Original Equipment. Now only 28,000 miles later we are looking to replace them. They were rotated and cared for lovingly. I cannot believe the poor performance and lack of traction. I was simply amazed that a $50K car would not grip the road any better. Looking at the tread life, I again dropped my jaw and will be replacing these rubber bands with something more in line with what the Benz can give. They provide a stiff ride, poor handling and miserable treadlife. I would not recommend these tires as replacements.

...50% worn after 9k miles...

These are OEM on my Honda CRV. Tread wear is dismal 50% worn after 9k miles, road noise is unacceptable, fuel economy is decent, I'm getting 27 mg in mixed driving. In snow they are poor. I ended up getting Blizzaks for snow season from the Rack and they are awesome! These continentals will be coming off my CRV next week and will be headed for the recycling plant where they belong. Forget about the free Tom Tom GPS and put your money wisely elsewhere! Honda's are such good vehicles. They need to put a decent tire on this great car. The contact 4x4's just plain ----!

This came as OEM. Flat spot developed at 10K when we were not even driving hard. Passenger side tires went bold at 19K. The dealer told us that we were some of the lucky ones that the tires lasted so long. Heard a similar story on OEM Continentals from C-class owners. So this is not because of the extra weight of R-class. Ride was reasonably good but this is probably because of the soft sidewall, hence marginal corner steering. We are changing to Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza. Well let you know how it goes.
