The 4x4 Contact is Continental's Crossover/SUV Touring All-Season light truck tire designed to make touring tire looks and handling available for the drivers of premium crossover and sport utility vehicles. Used as Original Equipment on BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche vehicles, the 4x4 Contact combines the large rim diameter sizes appropriate for light trucks with Continental's original ContiTouringContact CH95 style tread design to deliver comfort, handling and all-season traction, even in light snow.

The 4x4 Contact features a silica-enhanced all-season tread compound that helps improve cold weather traction. This compound is molded into a symmetric tread design that provides for the ability to rotate tires to maximize tread life. The tread pattern is also computer-optimized to reduce noise and heavily siped to provide the additional biting edges necessary to enhance traction in light snow. The tire's internal structure features twin steel belts combined with a spirally wound jointless nylon reinforcement to blend high-speed durability with ride uniformity.

NOTE: While Crossover/SUV Touring All-Season light truck tires offer all-season versatility including traction in light snow, tire sizes featuring extremely wide tread widths may limit the traction this type of tire can provide in deep snow.

Customers Say

Drivers find the Continental 4x4 Contact delivers excellent comfort, with many praising its smooth ride and low noise levels. However, treadwear scores (0-10) show widespread dissatisfaction, with rapid wear and disappointing tread life noted as key concerns. Winter traction receives mixed feedback, with some drivers reporting confidence in light snow but struggles in deeper conditions. Wet traction also draws criticism, including hydroplaning risks and inconsistent grip. Dry traction stands out as a strength, with high marks (8-10) for responsive handling and stability. While ideal for all-season touring on crossovers/SUVs, its limitations in harsh winter or wet conditions may require cautious use.

I have the Continental 4x4 contact in size 255/55/18. They are excellent. Much better than the Michelins I took off. Smooth ride, good handling, good traction in wet and dry. They also did well in the snow. I have over 25,000 on them and still have plenty of tread left. I will definitely be buying these again when they wear out.

These were OEM tires on the vehicle. They provide very respectable steering feel and cornering ability even for a such big vehicle. Dry traction is also quite good and road noise and ride comfort especially when new definitely befitting luxury vehicle.
But as soon rain starts be prepared to hydroplan... these tires are one of the worst I have ever experienced in wet condition. Even when they are new, they are hydroplaning over even most shallow puddles are norm. At highway speeds it is downright scary driving in rain this big vehicle on this tires, very unstable. Treadware is very average for the all season tires have to be repleaced right at 27000.
Overall: quite good when weather is dry buy in wet conditions these tires are unacceptable and treadware is mediocre as well. Michelin Latitude HP.

...Further, it is comfortable and quiet. Around here the roads are horrible and I feel that the tire takes the beating well...

The tire was OE when purchased. I drive in mostly an arid climate in Southern California, so I cannot comment on the tire's snow capabilities. However, it has been an excellent tire on both dry and wet pavements. Further, it is comfortable and quiet. Around here the roads are horrible and I feel that the tire takes the beating well. It is certainly a tire I would buy again when the time comes, and based on my ware, it will be a while. They look the same way since purchased. Frankly, I am surprised by all the negative feedback this tire has received.

...For a sport-ute it does amaze me with its comfort and handling... They are smoother and quieter than the Goodyear Wrangler/RTS or Michelin LTX/MS that I had previously tried on my Tahoe...

My responses to cornering stability, dry traction & steering responsiveness are tempered by the fact that I have never really pushed the Cayenne to its limit. It seems a little bulky to push around on our mountain roads compared to my former car, a BMW 540I 6-speed. For a sport-ute it does amaze me with its comfort and handling, but I really havent driven it as aggressively as I did the 540 so I really cant judge some of the factors in your questionaire.

Overall I have been very pleased with the Contact 4X4s that came on the vehicle. However, at 15,000 miles they are starting to emit a slightly noisy rumble at 55-65 mph that disappears at 70. I assume that this is just a function of treadwear. They are definitely smoother and quieter than the Goodyear Wrangler/RTS or Michelin LTX/MS that I had previously tried on my Tahoe, and they do get around quite well in the snow. Actually, I was surprised that they did so well in a recent early-season snow because the tread doesnt look all that aggressive. I am a little concerned that they seem to be wearing quickly. I will probably have to replace them at 20-25,000 miles but I must take into consideration that I am pushing a rather heavy vehicle around some pretty twisty mountain roads in a somewhat aggressive fashion.

I had such a great experience with the Dunlop WInter Sports that I got from you for my BMW, that I wish they made that tire for my Cayenne.

This was OEM on the 2010 Honda CR-V. Tires were rotated at normal intervals. Tread wore out at 22,800 miles after 1 year 3 months. Not what I expect of a set of tires, was not looking to replace tires for at least 55,000 miles.

Conditions - Autobahn, frequent rain & snow, occasional very high speeds. These tires are good at speeds up to 130MPH on dry pavement but are frightening in heavy rain and slush, even at reduced speeds. They do well in light snow at speed and no problems creeping through deeper stuff (4" +). Problems on ice & with cornering I attribute more to the enormous vehicle weight. Wear is very uneven on the fronts for mostly straight line driving.

I had no issues with these tires. Came with the car new. I drove back and forth to work year round, and through our last winter, I never got stuck in the snow. No tire noise, very smooth ride. My commute is mostly highway, and I rotate them frequently. (Every 5-8K miles). On highway, they feel very stable, and when pushed on entrance and exit ramps, they grip very well. Will replace with the same. Only downside, needs a little more traction in deep snow and ice.

...This is not a tire you want to drive with in the snow because the stress it causes is just extreme scary. Even in light snow and little to no ice, going up a hill on these is a challenge. I have actually turned around when I have encountered downward sloping parking lots at ski areas because of these tires lack of traction in snow and ice...

These were OEM tires and I would not buy these to replace what I came with the car. The tires look nice and sporty, but they have no real grip. On dry pavement, they are OK but on wet pavement, you notice a distinct loss of traction when driving and it has forced me to slow down dramatically to avoid hydroplaning. Even from a full stop on wet pavement you must be very easy on the accelerator or the tires will spin, even when new. When new these tires would spin on dry pavement when accelerating quickly from a full stop. This is not a tire you want to drive with in the snow because the stress it causes is just extreme scary. Even in light snow and little to no ice, going up a hill on these is a challenge. I have actually turned around when I have encountered downward sloping parking lots at ski areas because of these tires lack of traction in snow and ice. Tread wear is very fast and I noticed that thread depth on the OEMs appears to be less than aftermarket tires. The tires are noisy and it becomes noticeable at highway speeds. This tire performs OK only in ideal, dry, warm weather. The ride on them is not that bad despite the low traction abilities, but that is the best I can say about these tires. Do yourself a favor and avoid these tires if you do not want to be stressed about driving in wet or snow conditions.

...50% worn after 9k miles...

These are OEM on my Honda CRV. Tread wear is dismal 50% worn after 9k miles, road noise is unacceptable, fuel economy is decent, I'm getting 27 mg in mixed driving. In snow they are poor. I ended up getting Blizzaks for snow season from the Rack and they are awesome! These continentals will be coming off my CRV next week and will be headed for the recycling plant where they belong. Forget about the free Tom Tom GPS and put your money wisely elsewhere! Honda's are such good vehicles. They need to put a decent tire on this great car. The contact 4x4's just plain ----!

These were the OEM tires on this and they were down to 3mm on two and 5mm on the other two at 15K! I was very concerned with the reviews on these tires and decided to buy the Goodyear Forteras before the snow hit here in Maine. My dealer wanted to replace them with more Continentals and I refused. I did finally talk them into buying two of the Goodyears and I purchased the other two. I think the Continentals are an expensive tire and they wear out way too fast, I would not recommend them to anyone. The Forteras, on the other hand, have been great in every condition I've encountered this winter.
