The Firehawk GT w/UNI-T is Firestone's High Performance All-Season tire developed for sporty performance sedans and coupes. The Firehawk GT is designed to allow drivers to feel the freedom of the road by blending long treadwear and responsive handling with dependable traction on dry and wet roads, as well as in light snow.

Firestone's UNI-T Technology focuses on three primary tire components, the beads, casing and tread, which influence overall performance by enhancing comfort, handling and traction. On the outside, the Firehawk GT molds a long wearing, high-silica tread compound into an asymmetric tread design that features large outside shoulder blocks to enhance steering response and cornering stability. Inside shoulder blocks feature more lateral grooves and sipes to provide the additional biting edges that aid traction in foul weather. The Firehawk GT radial's continuous center ribs enhance responsiveness, as well as wet and dry traction when accelerating or braking. The entire tread design features Firestone's Veri-pitch sequencing of block shapes and sizes to help reduce tread pattern noise. The Firehawk GT's structure includes twin, steel belts reinforced by spirally wrapped nylon to enhance driving control and provide long, even treadwear while minimizing weight and enhancing ride quality. A polyester cord body and hard rubber sidewall reinforcements enhance steering response and cornering stability.

Vehicles Used

2006 BMW E90 325i Sedan

Refreshed to address the year-round driving needs of today’s performance enthusiasts who may encounter intermittent light snow, the new Firehawk GT w/UNI-T High Performance All-Season tire line reestablishes the Firehawk GT name in Firestone’s family of performance tires. Designed to allow drivers to feel the freedom of the road, the new Firehawk GT blends long treadwear and responsive handling with traction on dry and wet roads, as well as in light snow.

In order to confirm how the new Firehawk GT tires measure up to some of today’s other High Performance All-Season tires, we compared the V-speed rated Firestone Firehawk GT to the V-speed rated BFGoodrich Traction T/A, Dunlop SP Sport Signature and Yokohama AVID V4s tires.

Our evaluation used 2006 BMW 325i E90 sedans, with new, full tread depth 205/55R16-sized tires mounted on 16x7.5" wheels.

What We Learned on the Road

Our 5.6-mile loop of expressway, state highway and county roads provides a great variety of road conditions that include city and highway speeds, smooth and coarse concrete, as well as new and patched asphalt. This route allows our team to experience noise comfort, ride quality and everyday handling, just as you would during your drive to school or work.

All four tires in our test delivered on their promise of responsive handling with comfortable road manners. As in previous tests, the Yokohama AVID V4s received praise for its comfortable ride and relatively low noise level, especially along the rough expressway section. Dunlop’s Signature Sport was not far behind, also delivering a smooth ride and scoring well with our team. The BFGoodrich Traction T/A and Firestone Firehawk GT both displayed acceptable ride comfort, while generating minimal but noticeable tread and impact noise over the course sections of our test drive.

At normal road speeds, the handling scores for the Traction T/A and Firehawk GT were a virtual tie, feeling crisp and delivering quick response to the driver’s input. The Signature Sport also handled well, with slightly slower initial response to steering inputs than the BFGoodrich or Firestone tires. The AVID V4s counter-balanced its advantage in ride comfort with a small reduction in responsiveness versus the other tires.

What We Learned on the Test Track

Our 1/3-mile per lap test track course includes 90-degree street corners, lane changes and simulated expressway ramps. Run in both dry and wet conditions, the test track allows our team to experience the traction, responsiveness, handling and drivability normally only encountered during abrupt emergency avoidance maneuvers or competition events.

In dry conditions, the Dunlop Signature Sport felt very responsive and nimble, slicing its way through the lane change/slalom and around the tight corners. Subjectively the overall grip level didn’t feel as though it equaled the tire’s responsiveness, but this didn’t hold back our team as this tire drove its way to the quickest overall lap time of this test. Very close behind was the Firestone Firehawk GT, which delivered stable cornering and balanced handling. The BFGoodrich Traction T/A was also easy to control at the limit, but lacked the ultimate grip needed to post the quickest lap time. Just like on the road, the trade-off in handling for ride comfort impacted the Yokohama AVID V4s’ handling. Overall grip felt quite good, while steering response and cornering lacked some of the precision and stability of the Dunlop and Firestone tires.

In the wet we usually see larger differences between tires. In this case, however, the differences were not as big as often seen in past tests. Only 4/10th second separated the fastest to slowest tire, showing how close all four tires are to each other. In the wet, the BFGoodrich tire lead the way with the quickest overall lap time, fastest time through the slalom transition and highest steady-state cornering (average g-forces). The Yokohama lapped our course only 2/10ths behind, where its somewhat slower responsiveness and soft handling in the dry proved to aid feel and driver confidence in the wet by providing plenty of feedback and controllability at the limit. The responsive steering of the Dunlop resulted in a somewhat edgy feel in the wet. In close fourth place overall was the Firestone Firehawk GT, which didn’t quite have the wet grip displayed by the other tires.

...The wet traction is very good, and hydroplaning has not been an issue at all...

I like these tires a lot. I have them on my 2008 Mini Cooper S too.

They offer performance that is higher than I can experience on the street (with rare exceptions - looking at you on-ramps and round-abouts). The wet traction is very good, and hydroplaning has not been an issue at all.

I lowered my Alltrack on Golf R springs, and this size (235/40-18) fills out the wheel wells just about perfectly for me.

I would certainly recommend these tires for most spirited drivers - great performance and cheaper than that "other" brand.

...These tires are great in the rain, which is the main reason I purchased them in the first place ( hydroplaning is scary) and their dry weather performance is nothing to scoff at either, easily besting some so-called 'performance tires' I have used in the past...

This is the second set of Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 PLUS tires I have purchased and I regret nothing, just like the first time. These tires are great in the rain, which is the main reason I purchased them in the first place (hydroplaning is scary) and their dry weather performance is nothing to scoff at either, easily besting some so-called "performance tires" I have used in the past. The chance to test them recently in 9" powder snow, packed snow and ice proves that, even in deep snow, their tread block pattern and sipes are very good at gaining grip, as they readily pulled my AWD mid size SUV through that snow like it wasn't even there. This rivals a recent set of all out "snow tires". My electric brakes make driving on packed snow hard enough, but these Conti's do a good job of keeping the ABS from pulsing and locking up so much (causes the front end to slide). Quite commendable white weather performance from a non-snow/ice tire. These tires inspire confidence, no matter what the weather. Thank You Continental.

...These DWSs and Audi all-wheel drive got us up and down our long gravel driveway just fine in 10+" of snow in recent weeks...

Continental DWS has been my go-to tire for year-round usage in all conditions. Near Cincinnati, we usually don’t get enough winter snow to justify dedicated snow tires and wheels but we can easily get a few 6+” snow dumps a couple times per winter. These DWSs and Audi all-wheel drive got us up and down our long gravel driveway just fine in 10+” of snow in recent weeks. Conti DWS has been a great tire for my family’s needs on half a dozen cars over 15+ years and I expect to buy more in the future.

Did surprisingly well in all the ice we got in Virginia, late January 2026. Vehicle was able to drive on top of the ice as the Jetta wasn't heavy enough to break through 3 inches of ice, it barely left tracks. Made it to work taking it slow and easy on 3 miles of untouched country roads, highway was decently clear. This is my third set of the Extreme DWS model from Contentntial. I am pleased with my purchases.

...Id rate them about 8.5/10 scale for dry grip...

I bought my GR Corolla because I live in Eastern Washington where snow is a fact of life. I figured I’d better buy winter tires as the OEM Pilot Sports are a high performance summer tire. I bought the DSW06 Continentals as a tire/wheel package from Tire Rack and really appreciated all the care in packaging & shipping the wheels also came with the proper lug nuts & hub centric adapters…Tire Rack is the best!

Anyhow now that I finally encountered a decently snowy day and a long drive on a lonely 2 lane highway to home (70 miles) I can now comment on the performance of the Continental tires. They have the “All Seasons” Triangle on the sidewall….I already knew they were fantastic in the rain and dry grip is pretty decent….Id rate them about 8.5/10 scale for dry grip 9.0/10 for wet….really amazing In monsoon conditions where inches of rain fell in So-Cal and I could drive through 3/4” deep puddles going 60MPH in Los Angeles with complete confidence. The only quirk, these tires can sing you a song if the highway has the micro grooves for rain they will hum you a song on the highway.

Anyhow about the snow performance….I think they are very very good with just a slight deduction in points to 7/10 because they exhibit some vagueness in side grip on snowy turns sometimes…I also have to realize these aren’t dedicated winter tires and their could have been ice below the snow. I was able to drive with confidence @ up to 55MPH on a highway that had 1.5” of snow. Part of that ability is my Toyota AWD as the GR Corolla has F&R limited slip differentials…Amazing car much better than my 2012STI Subie. Understand my conditions while driving were limited visibility and the tires might be more capable than I’ve experienced but, I did pass a couple of vehicles on my drive and the tires gave great feedback and confidence. If conditions were like they were on my drive for long periods I’d be sporting studded tires. Great all around tire amazing in the wet better than expected in dry

...They behave like a proper street tire in the dry: stable, comfortable, and easy to live with...

I bought the DWS06 Plus as my all-season street tire for daily driving, but they ended up getting a real stress test at a soaking-wet autocross. Temps were hovering around 42°F and it was a full-on downpour.

The car was 100% stock (other than the tires), and I finished fastest overall out of 65 drivers.
In cold, wet conditions these tires feel like magic. Grip is confidence-inspiring, traction is predictable, and they communicate well even when the pavement is slick. They have also been impressively capable in the snow for an all-season, and they behave like a proper street tire in the dry: stable, comfortable, and easy to live with.

That said, I would not choose these for track use or dry autocross, and even in the wet I would avoid them once things get warm. They do not seem to tolerate heat well, which makes sense for an all-season compound and tread design. Push them hard when warm and they feel like they will get greasy and wear quickly.

If you want an all-season that shines in winter rain, cold temps, and real-world street driving, the DWS06 Plus is an easy recommendation.
