The Discoverer S/T Maxx is Cooper's Commercial All-Terrain light truck tire developed for the drivers of pickup trucks, SUVs, full-size crossovers and vans looking for a tough tire that provides the traction needed to navigate the loose terrain of job sites, gravel roads and off-road use. In addition to off-road capabilities, the Discoverer S/T Maxx is designed to deliver confident paved-road performance in dry, wet and wintry conditions, including snow.
The Discoverer S/T Maxx utilizes a cut- and chip-resistance compound molded into a symmetric, hybrid four-five rib design for low pattern noise and to promote even wear. The open pattern and multiple block edges provide the clawing traction necessary when negotiating soft, uneven soil, rocks or gravel. Stone ejector ribs and the non-parallel groove walls help resist rock retention, improving longevity by preventing stone drills that may potentially damage a tire. In-block sipes create the biting edges needed for traction in wet conditions, and the high-void pattern provides ample drainage away from the footprint for hydroplaning resistance. Discoverer S/T Maxx tires are molded to accept optional #15 metal studs to enhance traction on packed snow and ice.
Cooper's Armor Tek3 construction utilizes two 90 degree radial body plies, in addition to a third body ply with an eight degree bias to help reduce gaps between sidewall body cord. Two high-strength steel belts support the tread, while the nylon reinforcement above the steel belts provide high speed durability.

...They're great in the gravel and stony backroads of rural Upstate New York, and I've had no problems in the rain at all...
I generally prefer commercial tires on the little H3, and these don't disappoint. They're great in the gravel and stony backroads of rural Upstate New York, and I've had now problems in the rain at all. What little mud I've encountered gave me zero issues, although I wouldn't suggest trying to get stuck as these will probably dig you deeper. Yes, they grab and throw stones, and yes they have a little road noise... but for aggressive tires meant for practical off-road and backroads, these seem to be just fine. I picked these over the other popular American brand name (which owns Cooper now anyway) because of the road noise complaints and I can say that these are definitely quieter than the other brand on the same vehicle, same size. For reference, these are LT285/75-16E on a 2009 Hummer H3. They look like they belong on this thing to begin with.

Looking for off-road performance in snow and mud. A little disappointed. It is a good tire but, based on reviews from multiple sources, I expected it to perform better in mud and snow that it does. Need to use 4WD sooner than I've had with other AT tires. Whereas AT tires generally don't do well on ice, these have less traction than others. On the positive side, surprisingly good wet performance and they are wearing well.

I love these tires. Last winter in the back roads, I came across a gentleman with his dog. He buried his Subaru going down hill in over 1 foot of wet snow. That's how much snow was on the untraveled road also. I had to jerk him pretty good to get him rolling backwards (I was going forward up hill). My tires were spinning, dug down to the dirt and pulled him up hill about 500 feet to get him out. They wear decent to. I will buy another set.

Customers report excellent snow and deep snow traction with scores mostly 9-10. Ice traction receives good ratings (7-8 typically), though some note lower scores (5-6) in severe ice conditions.

...My current Ford F350 came with Michelin ATX 2s and they were the worst tire in deep snow. After feeling less than safe with the Michelin tires I purchased the Cooper ST Maxx and I felt like I had a truck again!...
This is the second set of Cooper ST Maxx tires that I have run on heavy full size diesel pick ups. I think it's the best all terrain tire on the market and is close in traction to a dedicated off road mud tire. I put 35000 miles on my first set before I sold the truck. My current Ford F350 came with Michelin ATX 2s and they were the worst tire I've ever run in deep snow. After feeling less than safe with the Michelin tires I purchased the Cooper ST Maxx and I felt like I had a truck again! These tires are awesome in everything except sticky gumbo mud and Wyoming betonite. They do a good job in the mud but not comparable to a dedicated mud tire. I'm so happy Tire Rack is now selling Cooper tires. I can save a couple hundred bucks on my next set.

...It has weathered the winter storms and heavy snow like a champ, without needing the truck to be in 4WD...
The Discoverer ST Maxx true workhorse of a tire. It has the same 3 ply sidewall as the Discoverer STT Pro, but more suitable for rough terrain, gravel roads and onsite construction sites. It has weathered the winter storms and heavy snow like a champ, without needing the truck to be in 4WD. I definitely recommend this tire for those who use their truck as a work truck or onsite office.

...They're quiet on the road, handle sharp rocks, sand, snow with absolute ease...
I never wrote reviews, unless it's REALLY good or really bad.
I live and work in Arizona. I do a lot of off-roading. I work at a rural station and off-road after work and on my days off, when fire season ends I hunt and guide hunts all winter.
Arizona has a wide variety of terrain on our trails from dirt, washboard, rock (lots of sharp rock at that), sand, mud, gravel, ruts, etc. I've put these tires through A LOT of abuse in the 10,000 miles I've had them and have yet in all the above mentioned conditions and have yet to experience a single issue. They're quiet on the road, handle sharp rocks, sand, snow, etc with absolute ease. I don't care about anesthetics but these tires look great as well.
Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with both on and off road performance and don't foresee myself switching tires. I wasn't sure how I would like these but took a chance as they came highly recommended, and I couldn't be happier. If you're even thinking about ordering a set, absolutely do it!

These are the best "all-terrain" tires on the market in terms of off road traction. They perform like mud tires. However, highway driving suffers severly. The tires have a tendency to make the truck feel like its rolling on the sidewall and severely exaggerate bump steer. Previous set of tires were BF Goodrich KO 2. Got 28k miles out of them in an F250. They have virtually no traction on anything but pavement, but handle like a highway tire on the road. The ST Maxx have an extremely hard rubber which makes them impervious to rock and extremely long life. That, combined with the excellent off road traction, Ill never buy another tire again. Just remember, the vehicle will not corner with these whatsoever.

Customers give positive scores (7-10) for ride comfort and noise levels, with many noting smooth handling on rugged terrain. Some lower scores (0-6) mention increased noise and harshness in off-road conditions, though most find comfort acceptable for a commercial all-terrain tire.

TireRack order shipped fast and arrived fast. Cooper ST Maxx are a great all purpose tire, balanced well, good traction across all types of surfaces except not deep wet snow or deep clay mud. Cooper ST Maxx are very comfortable and surprisingly quiet.

...They performed well for daily driving. They produced less road noise than my duratracs that I had on the truck before the coopers...
I put 27,000 miles on this set of tires on my 2008 Ram Mega Cab. I drive mostly highway during the week, but drive gravel roads, donkey trails, and fishing access roads in the summer, and hunting roads in the winter. I ran these tires year round in Alaska, and did not stud them. They performed well for daily driving. They produced less road noise than my duratracs that I had on the truck before the coopers. They handled well on ice with the siping, and well on mild to medium off road conditions. I would not do serious off roading with these, but was never kept out of my favorite fishing hole. I also was towed a camper approaching the 10k lb range and never had any issues. This was a great tire for someone look for good performance in a myriad of conditions and driving situations.

...It has the aggressive look that Jeep owners demand, the off-road trail performance to match and yet it's quiet and comfortable on the highway...
AMAZING.... Cooper describes this tire as commercial traction. I describe it as all around kick ------- tire. It has the aggressive look that Jeep owners demand, the off-road trail performance to match and yet it's quiet and comfortable on the highway. We've been through some heavy rains thanks to the 2017 hurricanes season, and these tires handled great. They should do well in the snow looking at the design and the ability to stud them. I wanted the Discoverer STT Pro since it seemed more off-road, but I am very happy with these in my Rubicon OE size 255/75R17. I highly recommend these tires for any Jeep, Truck or SUV!! It's a Jeep Thing, You Wouldn't Understand.

...This set currently has 61,000 miles on them (getting rotated and balanced at a local Discount Tire) and still have 7/32 of treadlife left. The store manager looked up my total miles to date for me and did two double takes on the miles. Couldn't believe the miles I have on them...
These are absolutely the best all around all terrain tire I have ever run, and I have run many different tires on my Jeeps and Land Cruiser over the last 35 years. This set currently has 61,000 miles on them (getting rotated and balanced at a local Discount Tire) and still have 7/32 of treadlife left. The store manager looked up my total miles to date for me and did two double takes on the miles. Couldn't believe the miles I have on them. Always have them balanced and rotated every 3 to 5 thousand miles at Discount Tire (lifetime for free!!) The tires are heavy, lost a couple miles to the fallen when changing to them but also had moved to a size larger than stock so not all MPG loss due to weight. Will absolutely run these tires again and, as of now, have no plans to run any other tire on my Jeeps.

...They hold their pressure AMAZINGLY, and I still have an eighth of an inch of tread on them at 70,000 miles!...
Long story short, I've driven my rig (a 2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara) with a set of these tires both on the road and off-road for the last several years without a single effin problem. They hold their pressure AMAZINGLY, and I still have an eighth of an inch of tread on them at almost 70,000 freaking miles! As far as cornering goes, the 10-plys are a bit stiff, but then again, my rig is slightly LESS aerodynamic than an elephant so I won't be drifting it around corners at 80 mph anytime in the near future. As far as off-road durability goes (coupled with a couple of inadvertent curb shots while parallel parking) they are darn near bullet-proof, and as far as road noise and vibration go, for a tire that is designed for ACTUAL periodic off-road use, they're not really that bad and a TON better than my buddy's Cepek Crusher tires. (Those things look amazingly cool, but they're louder than a tornado early warning system in Kansas!) In short, I bought these tires after doing a ton of research and they delivered in spades. That being said, I'm buying my second set from Tirerack.com as soon as I'm done writing this review. See ya in another 70k miles!
