The G-MAX AS-05 is General's Ultra High Performance All-Season tire designed for the drivers of performance sedans, sports cars and sporty coupes looking for a tire that effectively blends performance handling in the dry and wet with confident traction in all seasons, including light snow.

General G-MAX AS-05

Utilizing an all-season compound molded into an aggressive, asymmetric tread pattern, the G-MAX AS-05 features SmartGrip Technology to combine sporty handling with all-season traction. Large, stable tread blocks on the outboard and inboard shoulders deliver high levels of grip for confident high-speed handling, and the strong center rib provides solid on-center feel and responsive steering. Wet traction is addressed through the tread's high silica content, with four wide, circumferential grooves for increased hydroplaning resistance. Specifically designed block edges and strategic placement of tread sipes complete the all-season equation by creating the biting edges necessary for grip in wintry weather.

The G-MAX AS-05 features two-ply sidewall construction for improved handling responsiveness along with added durability. The casing supports two wide, high-strength steel belts, and a one- or two-ply polyamide reinforcement provides added strength for high-speed capabilities.

...Great dry and wet traction...

These tires have been a huge improvement over the stock Hankook tired that originally came with my vehicle. Great dry and wet traction. Decent snow and ice. Worth the purchase.

...Great dry and especially wet braking traction...

This review is a summary based on two full sets of tires. I like the tires as they are well matched to my car's weight and fwd handling.
My experience matches tirerack.com testing. I primarily drive 30-60mph in suburban traffic on asphalt roads. I push my tires and these GMax do not disappoint in *driving* situations. Great dry and especially wet braking traction. No problems with abnormal wear or flat spotting or balance issues. Nice rim protector around bead. These tires give a LOT of performance for the low price point near $100 each.
I recommend them from a *driving* standpoint. The have a decent ride, and acceptable but not great tread wear. I got 19k on first set even though these are 50k warranted. My handling complaint is the tires are twitchy or sometimes tram line. My Corolla electric steering accentuates this negative attribute and it was somewhat present on 3 other tire brands I've run on this car. But I noticed it more with the GMax.

Here's the fly in the ointment complaint I have with these tires:

First, the sidewalls are very weak. In the first set, I cut the inside sidewall on the RR tire making a right turn from a stop at night, maybe moving at 5mph, and tire dropped into a rut and immediately went flat. I filed a road hazard claim and was promptly reimbursed. On the second set I'm driving now, I recently hit a well camouflaged pothole at 10mph and took out both tires (sidewall) on LF & LR. This stranded me. So had to get two more mounted....sigh.

Secondly, if you are prone to picking up screws in your tires, this tire brand is not a good pick. A puncture repair voids the tread life warranty. Right now I have 3 separate tires repaired. I was planning on submitting these tires for tread life warranty....which I could get back about half the tire cost or roughly $50 a tire. That's $200 for the set. Well, I've lost out on $150 now...

So while I really like the tire, I would carefully consider the cons before purchase!

I chose these tires based on the Tire Rack ratings and comparison videos. I was impressed by the claims of excellent wet traction. I must say, that as a driver of performance sedans for over twenty years, these are the best wet handling tires I've ever owned or driven. Dry traction is also excellent. Just after a recent freezing rain/snowfall, I can honestly say that these tires inspire more confidence than I've experienced before. I routinely outpaced four wheel drive SUVs; and saw numerous cars and trucks in ditches when I had not experienced any tire slip at all. Too new to rate wear, but otherwise these tires are outstanding.

...Also, having been through two winter storms so far, they have done quite well for a ultra performance AS tire...

So I only have around 1,000 miles on this set so far. Honestly have been impressed already. Relative to the Firehawk GT's that originally came on my car, these are virtually silent. Wet traction and response is great! Also, having been through two winter storms so far, they have done quite well for a ultra performance AS tire. Rim protection is excellent. For the price, I would put these in the "Best Bang for the Buck" category.

Purchased these for my 2014 GTI. I autocross this car (not with these tires) and also Uber here in Denver.

Just excellent. We have a serious storm going on today, ventured out as I normally do. Not a snow tire but very competent in snow. Have Ubered in other snowstorms and on long drives to ski resorts, even when the 70 was closed and had to route through Kremmling on back curvy, snow-covered roads. If one pays attention and works with the car, zero issues. Have been over Vail pass with 4-6 inches on the highway and the thing just chugs.

Rain is even better. An excellent all season tire that I must recommend. In the dry, not a RE71R but is well sticky enough for some fun. Low road noise when compared to BFGoodrich and OEM. Handles Colorado year round if not trying anything overtly stupid. Very pleased with my purchase, and a little surprised by just how great these shoes are.

Live in Germany and had a set shipped over. No report on snow as it has not snowed here this winter. Dry traction is predictable and the tire has more bite than the car. My 318 compact is fun and these tires are fantastic in the wet. Recommend them over the DWS contis I had. Very impressed.

...In the dry I would rate them about equal for grip and steering response...that being said the Generals move around a bit in the turns when pushed due to the numerous tread blocks compared to the DWS, however Once you are used to the movement they are very predictable...

This may be extensive and boring but possibly helpful. I chose these over the continental DWS and michelin pilot as due to price...reviews were similar but I feel these may deserve a higher rating than advertised.. (WET) I have the continental on my C63S AMG, and although they are very nice I found that the generals have better hydroplaning resistance and overall better wet characteristics than the DWS shifting water right out of the way. (DRY) In the dry I would rate them about equal for grip and steering response..that being said the Generals do move around a bit in the turns when pushed due to the numerous tread blocks compared to the DWS, however Once you are used to the movement they are very predictable. (SNOW)...Ok...here is where I am totally impressed. The accelerating grip is way above average, not quite winter tire specific grip...but very confidence inspiring. Where I was most impressed was the stability in breaking in the snow. We all know that being smooth on slippery serfaces is key...but I gotta tell you the straight line stability of these under breaking in snow was on par with winter specific tires. If you have a higher performance sedan and are looking for something other than the Michelin, continentals, or Yokes....I would highly recommend these. Thanks for reading and I hope this helps someone who is trying to decide. safe driving

...My Mustang GT, 6-speed manual, 3.73 gears, Brembo package, with its current mods, is making about 250-260 horsepower and these tire hook from any roll in the dry, and even with a proper launch! I am also very impressed with cornering performance and highspeed composure. I can push these tires harder in the corners than I am comfortable pushing a mustang in the corners...

These tires are absolutely incredible when it comes to performance, and even better when it comes to value. I expected for the lower price point to be giving up some performance with these tires, but that is false. My Mustang GT, 6-speed manual, 3.73 gears, Brembo package, with its current mods, is making about 250-260 horsepower and these tire hook from any roll in the dry, and even with a proper launch! I am also very impressed with cornering performance and highspeed composure. I can push these tires harder in the corners than I am comfortable pushing a mustang in the corners. And at speeds excess of 150MPH "in safe conditions" they hold traction and help inspire confidence. These tires can be used on a track, at the drag strip, and especially for spirited backroad driving. I still am extremely impressed with how well these tires hold up under aggressive acceleration in the dry! As far as driving in the wet, again cornering and acceleration is more than enough, especially for spirited road driving. Granted I can't, nor do I feel comfortable, pushing these tires to their limit in my car, but that would be foolish anywhere other than a course with controlled conditions. I get more than enough acceleration in the rain in 1st and 2nd, and more times than not 3rd through 5th, which is my 1 to 1 gear, can be driven in wot in the wet with no break of traction. Friends and family members who have little to much more automotive experience than I have can all attest that these tires are incredible and way outperform tires in their price range, and shock others when I tell them their cost. As far as things like noise, and comfort, I noticed no negative impact from the tires. I drive a loud bumpy mustang so that isn't really important to me. As far as looks, they are great, especially going from 255 to 275's, they really go well with the car. Snow is something I have not used these in, and hope to be able to avoid. Hopefully, this review helps, I love these tires!!!

...They soak up bumps without feeling too hard or too spongy.

With about 3000 miles on these tires, I can say they're a VAST improvement over the OEM Michelin Primacys on my Accord V6. The General tires feel glued to the pavement in both dry and wet conditions. No snow time yet but I imagine they'll be sufficient. They bite firmly in corners and inspire confidence without chirping or squealing. They soak up bumps without feeling too hard or too spongy. Same thing on braking - they bite well.

The tread is surprisingly deep - which I believe contributes to a bit of noise at higher speeds. Depending on the pavement, over 50 or so they tend to 'sing' a bit; a high pitched whirring sound. It's quite tolerable (so far) and worth the trade off considering these tires a real performance bargain.

Every car is different. But for my Accord, I wish I'd put these tires on from day one.

...They were quieter than my worn Contis but definitely not as quiet as those when they were new... Only negative besides the slight highway drone/higher road noise is that they tend to flat spot overnight which goes away within a mile the next time you drive.

I replaced some Continental TrueContacts with these Generals- coming from a Grand Touring to these UHP All Season tires has made a huge difference in the way my Si drives. I loved the quietness and comfort of my Continentals when they were new but wet traction deteriorated quickly, they lost traction when accelerating from a stop in the dry, and I was wanting for more cornering stability and steering feel. After 3 years on those, I decided to go with some more aggressive rubber and had a hard time choosing between the DWS06, BF Goodrich G-force Comp2 and these. I have Altimax Arctics for winter and decided to give General a try with their all-seasons and I'm very impressed.

Right after putting them on the car I took a 500+ mile road trip across Pennsylvania and my mileage was actually better than the "LRR" Contis. What I enjoyed the most was that my car finally felt stable on the highway and the steering was no longer twitchy. They were quieter than my worn Contis but definitely not as quiet as those when they were new. In the last 2500 miles I have thoroughly enjoyed driving my car more than ever and really love the firm yet not jarring ride, dry and wet cornering ability and confidence that my Si has tires that can handle 200+hp at the front wheels. One other note- Pittsburgh potholes are downright awful and I find these to take potholes much better than my previous tires. Only negative besides the slight highway drone/higher road noise is that they tend to flat spot overnight which goes away within a mile the next time you drive.

...I will say that after driving 11,000 miles on these tires the tread wear is still in excellent shape...

Make sure when you get new tires that your car has a front end alignment done along side the mount and balance. It makes a huge difference in driving conditions, saving gas, and over all safety. These tires are "ok" to me. I will say that after driving 11,000 miles on these tires the tread wear is still in excellent shape. I went up a tire size and the Caddy has a more aggressive look. I didn't like the noise too much but I'm used to that now. After driving the first 500 Miles on these tires and breaking them in...the traction and the response was a lot better. I would purchase this tire again unless I find something else that's equal or better considering the price is legit.

After 20,000 miles, I can say without hesitation that I trust this tire and would buy it again. Good cornering and dry traction, acceptable for a NY winter, comfortable in the rain. If the road is empty or if I'm far away from other cars on the on-ramp (and the conditions are right), I'll take a corner as tight as I can. These tires have not let me down.

There has been one notable issue though: the treadwear. I'm probably around 22,000 miles and I'm nearly at the wear-bars in front. Part of that is my fault for not rotating the tires as often as I should, but these manufacturer warranties the tires for 60k miles. I shouldn't be getting less than half of that, especially when most of my miles are long-haul on the highway. I'll be buying them again, but will stick strictly to the rotation schedule in order to take advantage of the warranty.
