The Give and Take of All-Season Tires(06:06)
Firestone's newest, the Champion Fuel Fighter, joins some very popular tires in the touring all-season category. And with all-season tires, there's a lot of give and take when it comes to design and engineering before you get a tire that's good in all seasons.
Has Firestone delivered a lot of give with very little take? Let's find out.
Ratings data demonstrates the Goodyear Assurance All-Season delivers strong dry traction (7-10 scores) with confident handling and responsive steering, backed by reliable wet grip (7-10 range) though some note hydroplaning concerns. Treadwear receives praise for durability in many cases, though scores vary widely (0-10). Comfort earns positive marks for a smooth ride, despite occasional mentions of road noise. Winter traction shows clear limitations, with snow/ice scores frequently dipping to 0-5, indicating struggles in severe conditions. While excelling in everyday dry/wet performance, its mixed winter results suggest cautious use in colder climates. Most customers report satisfaction for standard all-season use.

...These are really good on wet pavement, but soaking wet, where there's pooling of the water, and these tires are just as vulnerable to slipping and sliding as any other...
I've owned Michelin, General, Dunlap, Telstar, Kumho, Kelly, Bridgestone, Goodrich, Hankook, and Firestone tires in all my years of driving. These are the first Goodyears that I've ever purchased. Until I bought these, I thought the Firestones which I had 20 years ago were the best, but these blow them away. Went about $50 over my budget, but worth it. I haven't had tires this good in the snow since those Firestones. I live in a hilly neighborhood. One snow storm, I had to go out of my way because of a fallen tree. I didn't realize that I went down and back up a steep hill in Drive, until I was about to turn onto a side street and wanted to shift down from 2nd to 1st. Imagine my surprise when I discovered I did that whole thing in normal gear. These are really good wet pavement, but soaking wet, where there's pooling of the water, and these tires are just as vulnerable to slipping and sliding as any other. As for ice, it's ice. Not much any tire, even these, can do in those conditions. I did see that some people complained about the treadlife. I think that treadlife is predicated on driving styles. I'm really hard on my tires, I've never gotten the full life span of any tires that I've bought. So unless there's collusion among tire manufacturers, I going to say that it's my fault that my tires don't last. I'm definitely going to buy these same tires for my other car when the time comes to replace the Hankooks that I currently have.

...The tires performed admirably in wet conditions, and also on the way home through the hot dry Nevada desert...
My observation is the Goodyear Assurance all season tires is an excellent tire. So much so this is second set since abandoned by Kumos poor treadlife.
The wife and I went to Yellowstone and ran into very inclement weather with heavy rain, light snow, hail, sleet to include temperatures dropping below freezing. The tires performed admirably there in wet conditions, and also on the way home through the hot dry Nevada desert. I would recommend these all season tires for your families vehicles.

When new first year or so, these handled and performed really well. I monitored wear and rotated about every 8-10 thousand miles. They were quiet and responsive for the economical value. They are about 3 + years old and 70,000 miles logged in. The tread is there if it was dry summer month but, with tread 1/3rd of start depth, these must be changed for a water safe tire. I did not get these as they were not available when I looked on Tire Rack for my size. I believe you can get 4-5 years if you don't travel for work as I did on them. I say they are decent but, not a super high performance. I would not frown upon them if I had them on car again. Worth the value I paid in my experience.

I have been extremely satisfied with these tires. Although from others that have them on a minivan, the treadwear has not been good. For me at roughly 12000 miles a year they have been great. Good handling and ride comfort.

...My car had 130HP 13 years ago when it was new and did about a 9 second 0-60. Definitely not going to break the tires loose. I drive extremely conservatively and have never had it spin the tires when launching, but now I can rarely leave a light without looking like an idiot. In dry conditions they only slightly make due...
INSTANTLY ADDS 300HP!!! OTHERWISE, WHY WOULD MY CAR LOSE TRACTION SO MUCH WITH NEW TIRES????
On a serious note, these tires are unequivocally the worst tires that I have ever driven on in my entire life. It really boggles my mind as to how new tires can be so bad in every aspect. I needed a new set of tires after my General Altimaxes got to about 70K and had the belts exposed. Those old tires in that bad of condition were truly better than these new Goodyears. I really wish that I didn't waste my money.
TRACTION: There is none. My car had 130HP 13 years ago when it was new and did about a 9 second 0-60. Definitely not going to break the tires loose. I drive extremely conservatively and have never had it spin the tires when launching, but now I can rarely leave a light without looking like an idiot. In dry conditions they only slightly make due. I still would not recommend merging into traffic going faster than 30mph. If you are in wet conditions then just embrace how terrible the traction is and enjoy spinning the wheels and sliding around. I truly feel unsafe in low speed city driving.
NOISE: There is a whole lot of noise on these babies. For awhile, I was wondering why the insulation in my vehicle was breaking down so rapidly. Then I realized it was the tires. I hope you don't ever want to make a phone call, listen to the radio, or talk to a passenger again.
TREAD: Who cares?? These tires are so extraordinarily bad right out of the box. Maybe they will be better with 50K on them? Who knows? Obviously not us people who got scammed into buying these pitiful excuses for tires.
There is no reason that these tires should ever exist. Please don't buy them. I wish that I had looked more into reviews before I purchased these. Don't make the same mistake that I did.
REFUND MY MONEY GOODYEAR!!

...They were great and I never noticed anything until they started to get down really low...
My GoodYear Assurance (set of 4) were purchased on 6/2/17. My car had 226,000 miles then and now it has 323,000. I am amazed at the life span of this tire! (The previous set of Assurance that I purchased "only" lasted about 75,000 miles.) They still have a small amount of tread left on them, but with winter upon us, I don't want to chance it. Also, they don't feel quite as good as they once did in rain. They were great in snow and rain. What is my driving like? Monday thru Friday I roll along in bumper to bumper suburban NYC traffic. And I have taken a few 1,000 mile road trips on them too. My mechanic (and I) keep them properly inflated and rotate them. The rest of the story can probably be attributed to the engineering at GoodYear. Noise? They were probably noisy on long road trips, but the Honda Accord itself is notorious for excessive road noise. Comfort? They were great and I never noticed anything until they started to get down really low. I just ordered a new set (Assurance Weather Ready) and noticed that the description says that have some "soy based material" in them. That makes me wonder if they will hold up just as well. This set came with a Two Year Road Hazard warranty included. Never used it, but that was nice for TR to have included it. I've been buying from TR since mid-2000s. I like reading the review (nerd that I am) and have tires shipped right to my mechanic. Always feel better about selecting them versus my mechanic calling his supplier and sending me whatever is in stock or overstock.

...Currently at 60,000 miles and not even close to the wear-bars yet. Going to put on another set before they get to the wear-bars, probably around 65,000 miles...
Great tires. Currently at 60,000 miles and not even close to the wear-bars yet. Going to put on another set before they get to the wear-bars, probably around 65,000 miles. Best Goodyear tires I've had in a long long time.
...I currently have almost 107,000 miles on the tires and they still barely pass inspection. I've never gotten this kind of mileage on any tire and Im amazed how they've worn like iron...
These are the OEM tires that came on the car when purchased new. I'm a sales rep and drive 30K+ miles per year and it's 95% highway driving. I rotate the tires about every 10,000 miles. The good: I currently have almost 107,000 miles on the tires and they still (barely) pass inspection. I've never gotten this kind of mileage on any tire and Im amazed how they've worn like iron. The bad:. These tires ride like iron... They're noisy, harsh on bumps, have terrible on center feel, are marginal in snow and rain, and they don't handle very well. For highway driving their OK, but aren't very capable in the curves. This isn't surprising for a hard compound, long lasting, wear resistant rubber.
I just ordered new tires and no, I'm not getting the same tires, but that's a review for another day.

...Great tread wear though. I believe the tread would easily make it to 80,000 miles...
I really dislike these Goodyear Assurance tires. Unfortunately, when I took my car into the repair facility for some other work, They called me to recommend having them replaced. Not because the tread wear had been exceeded, but because the sidewalls were showing their age. They hade over 60,000 miles on them. Due to a lack of communication between me and the service writer, they replaced them with the same brand and type that were being removed. Now I get to experience another 60,000 miles of terror. Actually, I have about 10,000 miles on these. They still look new. They feel and react just like the ones they replaced.
Wet traction is so poor that I have to think twice before accelerating from a stop during wet or rainy conditions. I must very consciously plan for any upcoming stops in the wet or we go sliding. Even in dry conditions, if I have to make a panic stop, it's scary. My vehicle does not have ABS, and the tires remind me so every day. They slide at the slighted provocation.
Great tread wear though. I believe the tread would easily make it to 80,000 miles. Hope I do.

...They handled horribly in the rain/snow, had them for about half a month once winter started and had to get rid of them...
The dealership put the tires on when we bought the car. They were so noisy it felt like you had to yell to talk to someone. They handled horribly in the rain/snow, had them for about half a month once winter started and had to get rid of them. Have hankook icept Evo 2 winter tires now and they handle better on dry roads and in the rain. Never going Goodyear again.

...It was so bad that I had to set my mind as if I were driving on snow with decent snow tires. That was the only way not to run into an uncontrollable situation when it rained...
I bought this Civic early 2018. Previous owner had just installed these Good Year brand new, then sold the car to me. And today, after only 16000 miles and plenty of tread left, these tires, Made in the USA the 2nd week of 2017, had to be replaced because of one reason only : their total inability to provide grip on wet road conditions. It was so bad that I had to set my mind as if I were driving on snow with decent snow tires. That was the only way not to run into an uncontrollable situation when it rained. Yet, aside from that, it's a decent tire. I've been driving a long time now, 35 years, both in Europe and the US, with all kinds of vehicles, and countless number of different brand of tires. But I never ran into a situation like that, having to throw away a set of tires so "new" with so much tread left. In my opinion, these tires should not be considered in your next purchase.

...light rain has me slipping and feeling unconfident in these tires...
Bought these tires 24,000 miles ago and they are already in need of replacement. Their dry handling is good and I like how quiet they are, but from the day I got them they have been inpredictable in any wet weather. Even a light rain has me slipping and feeling unconfident in these tires. If you want an all season tire I would check out something else.
