The Open Country M/T is Toyo's Off-Road Maximum Traction tire, a category often referred to as mud tires, built to handle the needs of dedicated off-road vehicles, trucks, full-size SUVs, and Jeeps and satisfy drivers looking for a tire that can take on any kind of environment, on- or off-road. Developed with powerful off-road traction at its heart, the Open Country M/T is designed to take drivers wherever they want to go, whenever they want to go there.

The all-terrain compound of the Open Country M/T has been molded into a high-void "Attack" design featuring a hook-shaped pattern in the tread and over the shoulders for all-around traction. Toyo has taken steps to improve the on-road experience, thanks to stabilizers reducing squirm and irregular wear as well as variable pitches in the pattern to cut down on repetitive noise. Off-road, the substantial, symmetrically arrayed tread blocks create the traction needed for loose, rocky conditions. Wide grooves and open shoulders aid in hydroplaning resistance, displacing mud, snow, sand and standing water, and the independent tread blocks create more biting edges for traction in wet or snowy conditions.

The construction of the Open Country M/T features a single-strand, jointless bead wire and is built from the inside out for durability, with a robust, three-ply polyester casing and high-strength steel belts for maximum puncture resistance. The two-ply nylon cap offers additional reinforcement and stabilization.

Note: While Off-Road Maximum Traction tires are branded with the M+S symbol and able to churn through deep snow, their typical oversize applications and the absence of snow-biting sipes in their large smooth lugs can challenge their on-road wintertime traction on packed snow and icy surfaces.

Goodyear Assurance MaxLife Reviews

Customer ratings showcase the Goodyear Assurance MaxLife as a strong performer in its Standard Touring All-Season category. Treadwear receives consistent praise (8-10 range), with many noting long-lasting durability. Comfort earns high marks for smooth ride quality and low noise levels. Winter traction shows mostly positive results (7-10) in light snow, though some report reduced confidence on ice. Wet traction excels with reliable grip and hydroplaning resistance (8-10), while dry handling delivers responsive steering and stable cornering (9-10). While a few winter scores dip lower (3-6), the tire's balanced all-season capabilities and strong treadlife make it a compelling choice for drivers prioritizing year-round usability and comfort.

...We just finished a very wet winter season in LA and they have performed perfect in the wet...

I installed these for freeway driving 120 miles a day in my Clarity. One year and 30,000 miles later, I could not be happier. Very quiet in an electric car is a must, and they deliver. They have worn from 11/32" to 7/32" which means they will last about 70,000 miles for me. We just finished a very wet winter season in LA and they have performed perfect in the wet. So glad I purchased these.

Great smooth and relatively quiet tires with good wet and snow traction. They are not as quiet as the OEM Bridgestone but they’re not as expensive either.

So far they have exceeded my expectation in every way. I thought the tires were going to be hard as a rock to the the crazy mileage warranty, but they are awesome even in harsh Ontario winter conditions. Wet and ice traction are really good, the deep snow not so much. We live a bit out of town and the roads don't always get plowed, so have got stuck in snow. As soon as we hit the highway, tires gripped nicely and ran smooth.

...I put them on before last winter (live in the Northeast) and they performed great in the snowy road and mixed conditions. But we never drive this car in a heavy snow storm situation...

My old tires were getting age cracked, and I had a mis-matched set (from previous owner, car @21,000 miles). So I looked for a good all around tire that had good road characteristics and long tread life. Chose these Goodyear's because of the positive reviews. I was not disappointed. I put them on before last winter (live in the Northeast) and they performed great in the snowy road and mixed conditions. But we never drive this car in a heavy snow storm situation. We drove this car twice to Iowa and back so far this year (each trip 2700 miles) and the tires are great on the road, handle well, and help me achieve what I think is great fuel economy for this car. They ride quiet, and give me a good positive steering feel. Yes, I will be purchasing another set when these wear out, but my guess is that won't be for a while.

...On snow, they aren't as great as an actual snow tire, but they are better than average for an all season... These have gotten me through slick spots up hills that other vehicles, (including other AWD's and 4x4's) weren't able to get over...

No issues at all! The Continental tires that were OE on my Ford Escape were noisier, had less traction (in all conditions), and didn't have as nice of a ride as the Goodyear Assurance Maxlifes do! I drive a mix of city and highway, and also do a few road trips per year in various conditions. I've driven on gravel, snow, rain, ice, and anything else that was in the way. The Goodyears are excellent in all conditions, and handle nicely while still offering a quieter, smooth ride.

On snow, they aren't as great as an actual snow tire, but they are better than average for an all season. I've never had them hydroplane or make me feel unstable in wet conditions. Of course, use common sense when driving in bad weather, but no issues for me. Cornering and handling are great. No screeching or traction loss in corners or sharp curves. I tend to be a little spirited sometimes, so I do notice when a tire has an issue gripping around corners. They also do well with braking in both dry and wet. These have gotten me through slick spots up hills that other vehicles, (including other AWD's and 4x4's) weren't able to get over.

If you have an Escape Titanium with the 19's, get these. So much better than the OE Continentals in all conditions. Even if you don't have the same vehicle, get them. Great all-around tire!

...These tires handle extremely well on the highway, city and back roads in all conditions...

Goodyear's Assurance MaxLife is an excellent tire overall. Actually, the best tires I've had in the past 10+ years, and that's spanning a dozen+ different vehicles. Unfortunately, I only had the pleasure to put around 2,000 miles on them before my Cherokee was totaled. I would not consider these tires for off road use, but then again they are not designed for that. These tires handle extremely well on the highway, city and back roads in all conditions (I can not comment on deep snow or tire wear due to the short duration I had them). Goodyear considers the Assurance MaxLife a Standard Touring All-Season tire, but I believe it should be in a premium level category such as with the Grand Touring All-Season tires. I highly recommend. I'm currently buying another set for a Kia Soul, and soon to be Buick Enclave.

The tires were brand new when I purchased the car about 16 months ago. I have put on about 50,000 (mostly highway) miles in that time. Tread wear is excellent; the tires still have approximately 8/32" of tread depth, suggesting they would likely last to about 100,000 miles. Appropriate wheel alignment and tire rotation schedules are likely to be contributing factors to their excellent wear properties. Dry performance is excellent and wet performance is good. Road comfort is about as expected for a low profile tire, but could be better. Snow performance is poor at best and ice performance is downright unacceptable. About 20,000 miles into ownership, road noise started noticeably increasing, and now, at 50,000 miles, road noise is at a level that makes the car unpleasant to drive for long distances. I'll likely be replacing these tires soon, even though there is plenty of useful tread life remaining.
