The Fortera HL Edition is Goodyear's Crossover/SUV Touring All-Season light truck tire developed for the drivers of crossover, sport utility vehicles and light-duty pickup trucks looking for refined ruggedness. The Fortera HL Edition is designed to provide a quiet ride, stable handling and year-round all-season traction on dry, wet and wintry roads, even in light snow.

The Fortera HL Edition features a longwearing tread compound molded into a symmetric tread design that enhances ride comfort and reduces noise levels. Highly buttressed tread blocks enhance dry road handling while staggered circumferential channels, curvilinear grooves and strategically placed sipes provide the biting edges needed to deliver all-season traction. The tire's internal structure features a computer-optimized shape to reduce footprint sensitivity to load, balancing the performance properties of lightly loaded to fully loaded vehicles (when properly inflated and within the vehicle's approved load limits). Twin steel belts and a polyester cord body help provide predictable handling while enhancing ride comfort.

2004 Volkswagen V6 Touareg SUV

It wasn’t all that long ago that pickup trucks were reserved for the workaday life and SUVs ("Jeeps") were for park rangers or off-road enthusiasts. Today, in addition to these traditional occupations, we see a wide array of SUVs chosen as the primary family vehicle, and pickup trucks regularly used for a night on the town.

To better match how and where many of today’s SUV and pickup truck drivers use their vehicles, tire manufacturers are developing premium Crossover/SUV Touring All-Season and Highway All-Season tires that combine the rugged sidewall styling of all-terrain tires with the refined road manners of passenger tires. As an added benefit, many of these newer tire designs are also benefiting from the latest in compounding and construction technologies, formerly reserved for high-end passenger and sports car tires.

To find out how several of these tires perform on the variety of roads surrounding our Indiana headquarters, the Tire Rack Team conducted a Real World Road ride comparing the Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza, Goodyear Fortera H/L Edition and Michelin Cross Terrain SUV. Our evaluation used three identically equipped 2004 Volkswagen V6 Touareg SUVs with the factory steel spring suspension, fitted with new 235/65R17 tires mounted on 17x7.5" wheels.

Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza

The Dueler H/L Alenza with UNI-T or UNI-T AQII is Bridgestone’s Crossver/SUV Touring All-Season tire that was developed for the drivers of premium, luxury sport utility vehicles. The Dueler H/L Alenza is designed to provide elegance with an edge, as well as year-round traction, even in light snow.

All Dueler H/L Alenza sizes feature Bridgestone’s UNI-T technology to increase comfort and control. In order to further enhance wet traction, select sizes have Bridgestone’s UNI-T AQII technology which features dual layer tread compounds to resist the normal tread rubber hardening that results from the heat encountered during thousands of miles of use. As the tire wears, the special underlying high-grip rubber is exposed, helping offset the effects of wear and age on wet traction. The result is that UNI-T AQ II helps handle wet road conditions even as the tire wears. Our 235/65R17 test size features UNI-T AQ II technology.

On the outside, the symmetric tread pattern of the Dueler H/L Alenza has been ride and noise tuned to enhance comfort. Large shoulder blocks and a continuous center rib aid responsiveness and highway stability, while wide circumferential grooves, lateral notches and sipes help increase stormy weather traction. On the inside, twin steel belts (reinforced with spirally wound nylon for H-speed rated sizes) provide support under the tread area, while polyester cords stabilize the sidewalls and enhance ride quality.

Across the variety of road surfaces and driving speeds, the Dueler H/L Alenza received good marks for ride quality and noise comfort, both of which were rated as an improvement over the original Dueler H/L D683 version. In our instrumented stopping distance test, the Dueler H/L Alenza performed well under dry conditions. Stopping performance in the wet was competitive with the other tires. Because our evaluation uses new, full tread depth tires, we were not able to evaluate the long-term impact of Bridgestone’s UNI-T AQ II technology on the wet traction, which has usually shown an increasing advantage as the tire wears and ages.

Goodyear Fortera H/L Edition

The Goodyear Fortera HL Edition is a premium Highway All-Season light truck tire that was developed to provide refined ruggedness for luxury sport utility vehicles, and a quiet, even ride along with overall responsiveness.

The Fortera HL features a long-wearing tread compound molded into a tread design that enhances traction and ride comfort while reducing noise levels. Staggered circumferential grooves and curvilinear sipes and grooves are integrated into the tread design to provide the biting edges that enhance year round traction, even in light snow. The tire’s shoulder design and sidewall appearance offer rugged good looks to complement the vehicle’s image. Internally, the Fortera HL uses a computer-optimized tire shape to reduce footprint sensitivity to load to provide an excellent balance of performance properties for lightly loaded to fully loaded sport utility vehicles (when properly inflated and within the vehicle’s approved load limits). Its twin steel belts and two-ply polyester cord body help provide predictable handling while enhancing ride comfort.

During our road ride, the Goodyear Fortera H/L Edition provided a good blend of road handling and comfort, but was not rated first in class in either of these areas. Dry stopping capability was competitive with the other tires. In our wet stopping distance test, the Fortera H/L required less distance to stop from 50 mph than the other two tires.

Michelin Cross Terrain SUV

Featured in the well known TV commercial starring the Mr. Bib bobblehead, the Michelin Cross Terrain SUV tire is a premium Highway All-Season light truck tire designed to complement the way most Americans drive their sport utility vehicles, by combining the looks of a light truck tire with the low noise and ride comfort associated with a luxury car tire.

The Cross Terrain SUV features a silica-enhanced tread compound molded into a tread design optimized for car-like ride comfort and responsiveness in dry, wet and wintry conditions. The tire’s sidewall offers a rugged appearance to complement the vehicle’s image while its continuous shoulder tread ribs maximize wear qualities while minimizing noise levels. Full depth, interlocking zigzag sipes are integrated into the tread design to provide the extra biting edges that enhance year round traction and driving confidence in light snow. Internally, the Cross Terrain SUV features twin steel belts, a two-ply polyester cord body and Michelin’s Bead Tension Structure to increase ride comfort and provide predictable handling.

Out on our road ride the Cross Terrain SUV offered responsive handling for a very connected feel, along with appropriate levels of ride comfort. Some team members found the level of tread noise to be slightly higher than the other two tires in this evaluation. Dry and wet stopping distances were competitive with the Dueler H/L Alenza and Fortera H/L Edition, but in both cases was a close third place.

...Wet traction has been outstanding and I was able to avoid a potential wet road accident (car cut in front of me) that I should not have been able to avoid due to my quick controlled deceleration.

These Goodyear Fortera HL tires are the ones that came with my 2020 Jeep Gr Cherokee Laredo E 4x4. I had a similar Jeep about 10 years ago that had the same tires. I am very satisfied with them. They feel very planted and reassuring when I drive. Wet traction has been outstanding and I was able to avoid a potential wet road accident (car cut in front of me) that I should not have been able to avoid due to my quick controlled deceleration. Tires were rotated @ 6100 miles and they were at 10/32 tread on all ties with even wear across the tread (new is 11/32). I have no snow experience with these tires as its only rained this winter in NC (and a lot). Noise level is very good for the type of tire, but you can hear them. If they continue to wear like they have for the first 6100 miles I should have these for years and I will Definitely buy the same ones again. Good job Goodyear !

...These tires drive confidently over the snow, but like any all season tire, not much to talk about on ice...

I have been extremely impressed with these Goodyear Fortera's so I thought I'd share my experience with them. These are the stock tires on a Grand Cherokee with around 50,000 highway miles and they will easily make it to the tread life warranty of 60,000. I wasn't expecting much out of these tries at first but they have consistently exceeded my expectations in snow, rain, ride quality and tread life. I have never rotated these tires in the 50,000 miles they've been on the vehicle and they show very little signs of cupping or uneven wear. The tire pressure is always maintained according to the vehicle specifications and I've never had alignment issues. These tires drive confidently over the snow, but like any all season tire, not much to talk about on ice. One thing I've noticed is they've never seemed to pick up and throw a lot of rocks which is nice. Aesthetically, I wouldn't say the lower sidewall design is the most attractive with the raised grooves, only thing I really don't like about them. Overall very good tire, can't go wrong with these.

...Snow traction far exceeds what these reviews suggest. I have some land I drive through. Currently have 20+ inches of snow and it still goes through it...

These tires are a jack of all trades. They are quiet, plush amd have excellent traction. These are the best riding tires i have had in a very long time. They ride better than the Bridgestone Ecopia HL 422 plus, the Michelin Defender LTX and the good year weather ready. These tires really soak up the bumps. Feels like they are gliding down the highway on a cloud. They are very quiet also. Snow traction far exceeds what these reviews suggest. I have some land I drive through. Currently have 20+ inches of snow and it still goes through it. Light snow traction is great also. I can pretty much set my cruise at 60mph even when snowing and not worry anout it. Very happy with these tires.

...They are quiet and comfortable on the road, and they have been good in snowy conditions. I am sure having a vehicle that is all wheel drive has helped with the traction, but even so, they have been good...

These were standard equipment on our Jeep Grand Cherokee. At first glance, I wasn't too impressed when looking at the tread design. I thought we would be lucky to get 40,000 miles out of them at which time I would switch to a better tire. We now have over 67,000 miles on them. We keep them rotated, and they have worn evenly. I have been greatly surprised by the ride and longevity of these tires. They are quiet and comfortable on the road, and they have been good in snowy conditions. I am sure having a vehicle that is all wheel drive has helped with the traction, but even so, they have been good. I have been very pleased with these tires, and while I often like trying something different in a quality tire, I see no reason to change from proven performer that is reasonably priced. I am surprised when I read other reviews where people didn't get many miles from these tires. As for mine, the tires will easily go 70,000 as they are still not at the tread wear indicators. Great tires for a good price.

...Dry: Mostly fine. A little bit on the noisy side if I had to be picky, but the wind noise on my 12 year old SUV is much more intrusive than the tire noise...

This tire came on my 2008 Trailblazer 4x4 that I bought used at 155,000 miles. I'm now nearly at 190k and have been waiting for years for a decent excuse to replace these tires. My Trailblazer 4x4 has an automatic locker in the rear (G80) and everything on the vehicle works properly.

Dry: Mostly fine. A little bit on the noisy side if I had to be picky, but the wind noise on my 12 year old SUV is much more intrusive than the tire noise. They do, however have a small leak that requires them to be topped off every month or two. Every. Single. One.

Wet: Poor traction. I legit spin my wheels just taking off from a light keeping up with traffic. If it's a sharp turn from a stop, you can bet the farm the inside tire will let loose unless I'm going full granny mode. I've hydroplaned as low as 40 MPH on these tires. First tire I've ever had that I've actually felt the need to run 4x4 or 4x4-auto just for rain.

Snow/Ice: I figure my 4x4 with rear locker gives me a MUCH bigger advantage in snow than these tires do. When I had my old minivan (FWD - open diff), it would climb the hill to my house with relatively little effort. These tires on my Trailblazer (RWD - locking diff) would spin and leave me high and dry on the same hill. I legit had to switch it to 4x4 just to get up the hill to get home a few times.

...Traction was great in all conditions: dry, wet, light snow, 2 feet of snow, 9 of sand on beach at 15 psi per tire...

Surprised and impressed. 58,500 miles on OEM tires. Traction was great in all conditions: dry, wet, light snow, 2 feet of snow, 9" of sand on beach at 15 psi per tire. Could they have been better in those conditions. Maybe. But I was never disappointed and never feeling I needed more. Also reasonably quiet and comfortable at 80mph on the highway. No complaints. Did my research on Tirerack. Lots of choices and pros and cons, but nothing stood out as significantly better, especially for the price. Just bought another set.

Great tire in terms of grip and comfort...

Great tire in terms of grip and comfort but, at 3.5 years and 45K miles on the car, all of them are dry rotting. These are supposed to last 60K. I've never seen dry rot like this on tires <10 years old. I'm told that because the dry rot is not on the sidewalls yet I'm fine, so I will continue to use these tires in hopes that further dry rot doesn't happen. One of the tires has a few tread blocks chunking off, so we'll see. Sidewall design looks nice on a Jeep but on my Durango, it's too psuedo-off road so I will most certainly be buying something else.

Original tires. Purchased a 8k miles on them. Currently have 38,000 on them and they have above half the tread life left. Have had them thru 2 New Hampshire winters and have had zero problems. This is my second Jeep Grand Cherokee w these tires on them and wouldn't consider riding on anything else. Just moved to South Carolina and although I won't see snow there is still rain and again I've had no issues. Jeep stops when I ask it to and have had no hydroplane issues. Would highly recommend these tires to anyone looking for an all season tire with good wear life.
