The Ventus R-S4 (Z232) is Hankook's Extreme Performance Summer tire developed for the drivers of sports cars, sports coupes and performance sedans looking for near-motorsports levels of grip for track events, autocross and drifting in a tire that can be driven on the street. Like all summer tires, the Ventus R-S4 is not intended to be serviced, stored nor driven in near- and below-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.

Hankook Ventus R-S4The Ventus R-S4 utilizes a new, carbon black and silica high-grip compound molded into a low-void, directional pattern. The wide, continuous center rib creates uninterrupted contact with the road for solid on-center feel and immediate response to steering inputs. Massive outboard shoulder blocks deliver the lateral grip expected for high-g cornering in motorsports events and performance driving, while the chamfered block edges maximize contact with the pavement under load. Wet traction has been addressed through the addition of highly dispersible silica. A functionalized polymer allows the silica to better bond within the compound matrix, while the two main, circumferential grooves allow water to flow through the contact patch for improved resistance to hydroplaning. Heavy rain and standing water may still present challenges to longitudinal and lateral hydroplaning resistance, so drivers should take care and drive cautiously at reduced speeds in these conditions.

The Ventus R-S4's performance begins on the inside. High-modulus bead filler and sidewall reinforcement material reduce sidewall flex for more immediate handling response. A two-ply casing sits beneath two wide, steel belts that support the tread. A two-layer (single layer in some sizes), jointless nylon cover is tuned to optimize handling and stabilize the tread for long life, and an extra reinforcement in the shoulder helps withstand the abuse of performance driving, even in high-camber situations.

Note: Tires exposed to temperatures of 20 degrees F (-7 degrees C) or lower must be permitted to gradually return to temperatures of at least 40 degrees F (5 degrees C) for at least 24 hours before they are flexed in any manner, such as by adjusting inflation pressures, mounting them on wheels, or using them to support, roll or drive a vehicle.

Flexing of the specialized rubber compounds used in Extreme Performance Summer tires during cold-weather use can result in irreversible compound cracking. While compound cracking is not a warrantable condition because it occurs as the result of improper use or storage, tires exhibiting compound cracking must be replaced.

Customers Say

Customers think the Hankook Ventus R-S4 delivers excellent dry traction with consistent grip and predictable handling, making it a top choice for track days, autocross, and endurance racing. Wet performance earns praise for reliable rain grip once warmed up, though some note hydroplaning risks in standing water. Treadwear stands out as exceptional, with many users reporting 10+ track days or 15,000+ miles thanks to durable construction that resists heat cycling. While not the stickiest 200TW option, its balance of longevity, dry confidence, and progressive breakaway makes it ideal for drivers prioritizing value and endurance over outright lap-time chasing.

...My last track day was one where we got the first session in the dry, then it started raining for the rest of the day. I was amazed that I could go almost as fast in the wet as in the dry. Only had a small slide once in the wet...

These tires have been an awesome addition to my car. The soft rubber creates a much smoother ride on my commute to/from work. They are much more compliant than the tires I previously had.

As for track handling, I've put one track day on them but was super impressed with their grip both wet and dry. My last track day was one where we got the first session in the dry, then it started raining for the rest of the day. I was amazed that I could go almost as fast in the wet as in the dry. Only had a small slide once in the wet. Prodigious grip all day long. Zero to no fade once they quickly heated up. Pushed them hard in the corners and brake zones and could put the car where I wanted all day long. I would definitely purchase them again.

...They also perform quite well in the wet in comparison to the others as I also daily drive these tyres...

Out of the other tires in this catagory iv tested, (Advan AD08R, Federal RSRR, Hankook RS3, Sailun R01, RE71r) these are all around easily the best. They outgrip all at the limit except the RE71r, which i was about 0.2 faster in. These also have the lowest treadwear, lasting much more than twice as long as the RE71r, and very similar to the AD08r. You can do several track sessions in a day without experiencing any over heating so they make for an amazing track/endurance racing tire, unlike the RE71r. They also perform quite well in the wet in comparison to the others as I also daily drive these tyres. They are a bit noisy but manageable. The price also places them at the cheaper end which makes it all the more worth it. In overall dry grip for this catagory they get 2nd place. But for every other catagory (wet, comfort) they top the chart

Solid tires. First track day was at Thompson Motor Speedway in pouring rain with shallow ponds of water on straights. Tires gripped extremely well with little to no slippage. Gripped well in corners. Tire pressure 31/30 psi

Watkins Glen dry and warm. Tires were hot and sticky. Gripped like superglue on the track with minimal wear. Highly impressed. Tires 28 psi.

...Lateral grip is on par with or better than RS3 v1 while also having a stiffer sidewall for crisp turn in. Straight line grip is excellent as well, in both acceleration and deceleration. These tires are very communicative, making handling at the limit easy to manage...

Car is a 3200# (with driver), 290whp E36M3. Having driven numerous high performance tires on this car over the past 5 years I can say these are hands down the best, knocking the RS3 v.1 off it's perch for me. As usual with the RS series of tire, the wear is excellent. I have had 3 autocrosses, 1 track day, a handful of canyon runs, and about 5k regular miles and have well over half tread left. Lateral grip is on par with or better than RS3 v1 while also having a stiffer sidewall for crisp turn in. Straight line grip is excellent as well, in both acceleration and deceleration. These tires are very communicative, making handling at the limit easy to manage. You can really feel the tires working in the corners and they respond well to smooth mid corner adjustments. They make little to no noise in cruising or at the limit in my experience, more of a scrub sound than anything. As with the RS3 v1, these are very heat resistant and difficult to grease out, but they are much easier to get up to & maintain the proper temp.

My only negative comment would be that they do seem somewhat sensitive to tire pressures. A change of 2 psi caused a dramatic difference in the feel of the car on subsequent runs. Not necessarily slower, but different. This may cause you to constantly tweak pressures to find your style.

...18 sidewalls make the ride much better than the factory 20 MPSS tires, and they have plenty of grip dry, and still more than adequate grip for the wet, and don't throw rocks like some other street/track tires do... Plenty of grip and durability on track days, with a nice predictable slide, and no real negative tradeoffs on the street...

Have a set of 265/295/40-18" on mine. They have had 3 track days at MSR Cresson and I have just crossed over 14,000 total miles on this set and the rears are reaching the wear bars and I've ordered a second set. Overall great all around tire. I use these as my DD 3-4 times a week on the highway and in traffic here in DFW and they're nice in all conditions. 18" sidewalls make the ride much better than the factory 20" MPSS tires, and they have plenty of grip dry, and still more than adequate grip for the wet, and don't throw rocks like some other street/track tires do. I did not attempt any cold weather driving per the tire recommendations, but they have held up very well. Plenty of grip and durability on track days, with a nice predictable slide, and no real negative tradeoffs on the street, if you can accept changing every 15k max.

...When brand new, one thing I noticed was that they didn't talk much at all at the limit. I could feel them breaking away, so it wasn't bad at all not to have to listen to the squealing...

I put these on the Miata early this spring and used for a full autocross season (15 cumulative events). This was my first year in the Miata, after switching from my heavier front-drive car, so I was pretty sloppy and abused the tires pretty roughly on the autocross courses. Lots of lockups, spins and post-grip revving. Given that, they have worn surprisingly evenly and never melted or hardened.
When brand new, one thing I noticed was that they didn't talk much at all at the limit. I could feel them breaking away, so it wasn't bad at all not to have to listen to the squealing. They still don't make a lot of noise, after a heavy season (it's a 2-driver car) so I'm hoping I have enough soft compound left for another season. Very pleasant to drive on them to and from the events. No harshness or roaring. I think those (the streetability and wear) are their main advantages over the time leaders (the 71R and Rival S) which are probably a tenth or two faster on identically prepared cars.

As a long-wearing "200" TW tire, this is fantastic for track day use at a significantly lower cost per day than faster tires. It is not as fast as RE71s or R-compound options, but I don't think I would have done 12 days in a 4000lb car on something faster. If you're chasing lap times, there are better options. If you want something predictable, fairly fast, and cheap to run these are great. Noise, ride quality, and road manners are as expected for the category. Watch out for availability: they arrive every spring and sell out before the following April.

We've been running these on our Endurance race car for almost two years now. They are by far the best wearing and most consistent tire we have tried. With 7+ hours of continuous wheel to wheel racing abuse, the tires look great after every race. We have yet to burn through a complete set as we will typically flat spot or heat cycle them out before we get below the wear bars.

We have run the Toyo R1R (great in the rain, but will only go about 6-8 hrs on our car) and the BFG Rival (long lasting, but lacked feel and grip)
