The Firehawk GT w/UNI-T is Firestone's High Performance All-Season tire developed for sporty performance sedans and coupes. The Firehawk GT is designed to allow drivers to feel the freedom of the road by blending long treadwear and responsive handling with dependable traction on dry and wet roads, as well as in light snow.

Firestone's UNI-T Technology focuses on three primary tire components, the beads, casing and tread, which influence overall performance by enhancing comfort, handling and traction. On the outside, the Firehawk GT molds a long wearing, high-silica tread compound into an asymmetric tread design that features large outside shoulder blocks to enhance steering response and cornering stability. Inside shoulder blocks feature more lateral grooves and sipes to provide the additional biting edges that aid traction in foul weather. The Firehawk GT radial's continuous center ribs enhance responsiveness, as well as wet and dry traction when accelerating or braking. The entire tread design features Firestone's Veri-pitch sequencing of block shapes and sizes to help reduce tread pattern noise. The Firehawk GT's structure includes twin, steel belts reinforced by spirally wrapped nylon to enhance driving control and provide long, even treadwear while minimizing weight and enhancing ride quality. A polyester cord body and hard rubber sidewall reinforcements enhance steering response and cornering stability.

2006 BMW E90 325i Sedan

Refreshed to address the year-round driving needs of today’s performance enthusiasts who may encounter intermittent light snow, the new Firehawk GT w/UNI-T High Performance All-Season tire line reestablishes the Firehawk GT name in Firestone’s family of performance tires. Designed to allow drivers to feel the freedom of the road, the new Firehawk GT blends long treadwear and responsive handling with traction on dry and wet roads, as well as in light snow.

In order to confirm how the new Firehawk GT tires measure up to some of today’s other High Performance All-Season tires, we compared the V-speed rated Firestone Firehawk GT to the V-speed rated BFGoodrich Traction T/A, Dunlop SP Sport Signature and Yokohama AVID V4s tires.

Our evaluation used 2006 BMW 325i E90 sedans, with new, full tread depth 205/55R16-sized tires mounted on 16x7.5" wheels.

What We Learned on the Road

Our 5.6-mile loop of expressway, state highway and county roads provides a great variety of road conditions that include city and highway speeds, smooth and coarse concrete, as well as new and patched asphalt. This route allows our team to experience noise comfort, ride quality and everyday handling, just as you would during your drive to school or work.

All four tires in our test delivered on their promise of responsive handling with comfortable road manners. As in previous tests, the Yokohama AVID V4s received praise for its comfortable ride and relatively low noise level, especially along the rough expressway section. Dunlop’s Signature Sport was not far behind, also delivering a smooth ride and scoring well with our team. The BFGoodrich Traction T/A and Firestone Firehawk GT both displayed acceptable ride comfort, while generating minimal but noticeable tread and impact noise over the course sections of our test drive.

At normal road speeds, the handling scores for the Traction T/A and Firehawk GT were a virtual tie, feeling crisp and delivering quick response to the driver’s input. The Signature Sport also handled well, with slightly slower initial response to steering inputs than the BFGoodrich or Firestone tires. The AVID V4s counter-balanced its advantage in ride comfort with a small reduction in responsiveness versus the other tires.

What We Learned on the Test Track

Our 1/3-mile per lap test track course includes 90-degree street corners, lane changes and simulated expressway ramps. Run in both dry and wet conditions, the test track allows our team to experience the traction, responsiveness, handling and drivability normally only encountered during abrupt emergency avoidance maneuvers or competition events.

In dry conditions, the Dunlop Signature Sport felt very responsive and nimble, slicing its way through the lane change/slalom and around the tight corners. Subjectively the overall grip level didn’t feel as though it equaled the tire’s responsiveness, but this didn’t hold back our team as this tire drove its way to the quickest overall lap time of this test. Very close behind was the Firestone Firehawk GT, which delivered stable cornering and balanced handling. The BFGoodrich Traction T/A was also easy to control at the limit, but lacked the ultimate grip needed to post the quickest lap time. Just like on the road, the trade-off in handling for ride comfort impacted the Yokohama AVID V4s’ handling. Overall grip felt quite good, while steering response and cornering lacked some of the precision and stability of the Dunlop and Firestone tires.

In the wet we usually see larger differences between tires. In this case, however, the differences were not as big as often seen in past tests. Only 4/10th second separated the fastest to slowest tire, showing how close all four tires are to each other. In the wet, the BFGoodrich tire lead the way with the quickest overall lap time, fastest time through the slalom transition and highest steady-state cornering (average g-forces). The Yokohama lapped our course only 2/10ths behind, where its somewhat slower responsiveness and soft handling in the dry proved to aid feel and driver confidence in the wet by providing plenty of feedback and controllability at the limit. The responsive steering of the Dunlop resulted in a somewhat edgy feel in the wet. In close fourth place overall was the Firestone Firehawk GT, which didn’t quite have the wet grip displayed by the other tires.

Pirelli P Zero (PZ4) Reviews

Customers praise the Pirelli P Zero (PZ4) for its excellent dry traction, with many ratings in the 9-10 range highlighting sharp handling and confident cornering. Wet traction scores (7-10) show strong performance in intended conditions, though a few note reduced grip in heavy rain. Ride comfort earns consistent praise for smoothness and low noise, with most scores above 8. Treadwear receives mixed feedback, with frequent low scores (0-5) suggesting shorter lifespan than expected for a max performance summer tire. While drivers love its dry-focused capabilities, those prioritizing longevity may want to consider trade-offs.

...Excellent tire overall; great traction and cornering in wet & dry conditions, also quiet & comfortable on decent pavement...

Tires not purchased via Tire Rack, but OEM on my particular model. Excellent tire overall; great traction and cornering in wet & dry conditions, also quiet & comfortable on decent pavement. Other than its high price (nearly $500), I’d highly recommend it for EV owners looking for a UHP EV-ready tire for ‘spirited’ road, definitely not track, use.

...They are grippy in both the wet and dry too...

My first set of Pirelli's and I can testify that the steering is much more sensitive with turn in beingg quicker with these tires over my previous ContiSport Contacts. They are grippy in both the wet and dry too. I'm very pleased with my purchase.

Great tire, hooks fairly well when launching, grabs hard if you punch it while rolling. Through the corners it's predictable, and holds the road quite well.

Pretty happy with these tires, I bought the 275/40 in the front and 315/35 in the rear and I’m way happy with them. The ride tone is great, hardly any noise and I was worried about that. I would recommend and buy again.

The treads are not very deep. They only had 500 miles on it when I took my car in for an oil change and the dealer thought that I needed a replacement. They do look pretty worn compared to my Michelins up front that have 20K on them...

They do look pretty worn compared to my Michelins up front that have 20K on them. Maybe they're made that way to provide a quieter ride, but now I'm a little concerned in wet conditions.

Great price and service from Tire Rack. Nothing but praises there.

I will admit my potenzas did wear extremely quickly and that is not something I can comment on here because I got rid of these tires after about 3000 miles...

I switched from Bridgestone Potenza to Pirelli PZ4 and right after I put them on, a close friend of mine told me they are the worst tires he’s ever put on his Audi. I dismissed him, but after just a week of driving on them, I have to agree. They have 0 wet traction and a fraction of the dry traction compared to my potenzas. I always had faith in my Quattro/bridgestone combo, but these took all of that confidence away. I will admit my potenzas did wear extremely quickly and that is not something I can comment on here because I got rid of these tires after about 3000 miles. Go buy Bridgestones or pilot sports.

Although these Pirelli PZeros are excellent for grip, they fail tremendously in tread wear. I've gone through a new set of these tires in 2 years, ( 12,000 miles, maybe a bit less) which is unacceptable and I'm 100% sure I won't purchase them again if they're bald in 2 years.
