Riken Raptor ZR

The Raptor ZR A/S is RIKEN's Ultra High Performance All-Season tire developed for the drivers of sporty coupes and sport sedans looking to combine responsive steering and performance-focused handling with capability in inclement weather, even in very light snow.

The Raptor ZR A/S molds an all-season compound into an aggressive, directional tread design focused on providing traction in dry and wet conditions. The arrow-shaped pattern utilizes wide lateral grooves for efficient water evacuation and improved hydroplaning resistance. The tire sidewalls feature a rigid compound to help improve handling and steering response, while a built-in rim protector helps prevent damage to wheels.

The tire's internal construction consists of a two-ply polyester casing supporting two wide, steel belts. A two-ply nylon reinforcement aids handling and provides high-speed durability.

...They are outstanding in the rain...

Best tires I’ve ever had. I always feel completely in control regardless of where I am. They are outstanding in the rain. They do well regardless of what I’ve used my truck for. I will for sure be purchasing these again.

...The roads in south Arkansas are bad do to all the log trucks and can hold 3 to 4 inches of water in some places on the highway. Driving between 55 and 75 these tires preformed very well. I never lost traction one time...

I purchase these tires for there thread pattern and warranty. With only a 1000 on them I can't talk about thread wear yet. But second night I had them it came a 4 inch rain in 2 hours. The roads in south Arkansas are bad do to all the log trucks and can hold 3 to 4 inches of water in some places on the highway. Driving between 55 and 75 these tires preformed very well. I never lost traction one time. The pattern allowed the water to get out from under tire and maintain traction with the highway. I will purchase these again.

...By comparison these tires make less road noise, handle, turn and stop as well or slightly better than the Silent Armor and are better in the wet...

2007 Tahoe 4WD Z71. This is an “early report” with just less than 1000 miles on the tires and no winter conditions. These replaced Goodyear Silent Armor tires, which I absolutely loved, with the 2nd set being removed to install these tires. By comparison these tires make less road noise, handle, turn and stop as well or slightly better than the Silent Armor and are better in the wet. Good tire for 4 wheel drive SUV or Pickup.

...We got about 12 inches of snow and these tires didn't miss a beat. I was on the road with other trucks slipping and sliding, trying to accelerate. I felt like I was on dry pavement...

I am so impressed with these tires. I have driven in the rain and they were great. Driving on a dry highway, I can't hear any tire noise (I expected to hear noise). I finally got to try them in snow yesterday. We got about 12 inches of snow and these tires didn't miss a beat. I was on the road with other trucks slipping and sliding, trying to accelerate. I felt like I was on dry pavement. I have an AWD drive truck (the traction kicks on when the rear tires slip) I tried to get the rear tires to slip and had a tough time doing so. I pulled 3 cars and 2 trucks out of snow piles (the ridge from the plows) and only one time did my traction kick on and engage the front wheels. To be fair, one truck was a 2wd Chevy and the other one of the trucks, 2014 Ram 4X4, belongs to my neighbor. I suggested he get a set of these tires, he was looking at BFG All Terrain KO's. I've had those tires, also amazing. But for the money these can't be beat. I ordered these with a set of rims, I picked them up and installed them in my garage. One of the rims had a chip out of it and Tire rack stood behind their product and sent me a new rim. They even gave me a credit on my credit card to get the new rim mounted and balanced anywhere I chose. Great customer service and great products.

...Drove 4 hours through blowing snow and slush on the highway and didn't feel them lose grip at all. There was a little squirming changing lanes through the heavy slush built up in the middle, but they seemed to cut through it pretty good for the most part. We were cruising past everyone on the 4 lanes driving at the speed limit (110) while all other traffic had slowed to around 80 km/h...

Bought these from my local dealer up here in Canada (sorry Tirerack) and immediately set out on a road trip the next day. Oh joy, it was snowing in September up here in North Saskatchewan and Alberta......no problem, perfect conditions to throw down the gauntlet and test them out. Not a lot of info on the Sumitomo Encounter AT's, but what is there rates them very highly....on to my review.

Drove 4 hours through blowing snow and slush on the highway and didn't feel them lose grip at all. There was a little squirming changing lanes through the heavy slush built up in the middle, but they seemed to cut through it pretty good for the most part.
We were cruising past everyone on the 4 lanes driving at the speed limit (110) while all other traffic had slowed to around 80 km/h. Not once did the Jeep feel anything but planted and in control......I know for a fact that the Firestones would not have handled it anywhere near as well.

Added bonus, they are as quiet or quieter on the road than the stock Destination AT's, no hum, no howl, no drone......

Weekend mileage was around 1100 kms return trip with a full gamut of weather and terrain; Snow, Slush, rain, mud (friend lives in the country, 9 miles of muddy gravel road), Off-road, Rain, and Dry pavement.

Overall, I am very happy with the purchase so far and this trip got a big passing grade from me.
Sumitomo Encounter AT gets my recommendation and is definitely a replacement tire to consider.

These tires almost instantly impressed me. Great response, great traction. Yes they do have a little more road noise than some of the others, but for 500$ cheaper for a set, I'll take the tiny tiny bit of road noise. I recommend these.

...90% reduction in tire noise. Ride is much smoother over washboard and rough uneven roads. City and highway driving in much improved...

Recently installed a full set of these Sumitomo Encounter AT, replacing the 1/2 worn Hankook Dynapro tires. My first driving impression is 90% reduction in tire noise. Ride is much smoother over washboard and rough uneven roads. City and highway driving in much improved.
I like the deep tread and snow rating, 60,000 mile warranty. I will update my impression of these tires as I put on more miles.

...Comfortable ride, absorbs bumps although is on the firm side...

First thing I noticed was these tire are heavier in weight and have a much stiffer sidewall than Michelin AT tires I took off. Sumitomo website says 48lbs -Michelin's 40lbs. They look almost more like a Load Range C tire appear to be a very sturdy tire. Have driven the tires quite a bit in the short time I have had them in fair number of different conditions.

Pros:
Comfortable ride, absorbs bumps although is on the firm side
Feels solid and planted on road
A little tire noise - not bad at all but you hear some at Highway speeds without radio on
Excellent snow traction both deep and light light snow
Off road is excellent - handles rock, dirt etc
No sign of wear at this point(I wouldn't expect any)

Cons:
Ice traction not great - didn't expect it to be so if you think is going to replace a true snowtire on that kind of stuff it won't
Slight drop in gas mileage(probably due to heavier tire) about .5 miles a gallon but worth it due to better overall performance and tire "toughness"

At this point would buy to buy again(a great value) but will update after 10K mikes to see how things are
