The 4x4 Contact is Continental's Crossover/SUV Touring All-Season light truck tire designed to make touring tire looks and handling available for the drivers of premium crossover and sport utility vehicles. Used as Original Equipment on BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche vehicles, the 4x4 Contact combines the large rim diameter sizes appropriate for light trucks with Continental's original ContiTouringContact CH95 style tread design to deliver comfort, handling and all-season traction, even in light snow.

The 4x4 Contact features a silica-enhanced all-season tread compound that helps improve cold weather traction. This compound is molded into a symmetric tread design that provides for the ability to rotate tires to maximize tread life. The tread pattern is also computer-optimized to reduce noise and heavily siped to provide the additional biting edges necessary to enhance traction in light snow. The tire's internal structure features twin steel belts combined with a spirally wound jointless nylon reinforcement to blend high-speed durability with ride uniformity.

NOTE: While Crossover/SUV Touring All-Season light truck tires offer all-season versatility including traction in light snow, tire sizes featuring extremely wide tread widths may limit the traction this type of tire can provide in deep snow.

Customers Say

Customer feedback data reveals the Continental 4x4 Contact delivers strong dry traction (scores 8-10) and adequate comfort, with many praising its smooth ride despite some reports of road noise. Treadwear scores (4-5 average) raise concerns, with multiple reports of premature wear limiting long-term value. Winter traction shows mixed results (scores 3-7), with some drivers noting struggles on ice and packed snow. Wet performance is inconsistent, with hydroplaning resistance varying widely (scores 1-9). While the tire excels in dry conditions typical of its all-season touring role, buyers prioritizing winter capability or extended mileage may want to consider these limitations carefully.

...They are quiet, comfortable, and handle well on my ML320. They are not sports car tires for a truck, but rather all season grand touring tires...

After 46000 miles, these tires are still in excellent condition. I am considering replacing them at this time as the tread , while still legal, is not well wuited for winter slush and snow. If I manage to get past this winter, they will be good for about 5000 more miles. They are quiet, comfortable, and handle well on my ML320. They are not sports car tires for a truck, but rather all season grand touring tires. They are perfect for a Mercedes Benz. I understand that VW Toureg and Porsche Cayenne owners are wearing them out in 12000-14000 miles. This is not Continentals fault. VW/Porsche designed a poor suspension that loads the tire too much. Those trucks are also way too heavy. They are the right choice for all ML class vehicles.

...For a sport-ute it does amaze me with its comfort and handling, but I really havent driven it as aggressively as I did the 540 so I really cant judge some of the factors in your questionaire...

My responses to cornering stability, dry traction & steering responsiveness are tempered by the fact that I have never really pushed the Cayenne to its limit. It seems a little bulky to push around on our mountain roads compared to my former car, a BMW 540I 6-speed. For a sport-ute it does amaze me with its comfort and handling, but I really havent driven it as aggressively as I did the 540 so I really cant judge some of the factors in your questionaire.

Overall I have been very pleased with the Contact 4X4s that came on the vehicle. However, at 15,000 miles they are starting to emit a slightly noisy rumble at 55-65 mph that disappears at 70. I assume that this is just a function of treadwear. They are definitely smoother and quieter than the Goodyear Wrangler/RTS or Michelin LTX/MS that I had previously tried on my Tahoe, and they do get around quite well in the snow. Actually, I was surprised that they did so well in a recent early-season snow because the tread doesnt look all that aggressive. I am a little concerned that they seem to be wearing quickly. I will probably have to replace them at 20-25,000 miles but I must take into consideration that I am pushing a rather heavy vehicle around some pretty twisty mountain roads in a somewhat aggressive fashion.

I had such a great experience with the Dunlop WInter Sports that I got from you for my BMW, that I wish they made that tire for my Cayenne.

I like their ride, wet and dry, and they have excellent NVH characteristics...

I had initial problems with the outside edges of the tires being nibbled away-tires looked like they were severely out of alignment. It turned out to be a problem with bad "stepper motors" in the 4 wheel drive system. VW replaced the motors and the tires under warranty at no cost to me. Now, with about 18,000 miles, the tires appear to have maybe 3-4000 miles remaining on them. I have driven them on black ice without incident, I like their ride, wet and dry, and they have excellent NVH characteristics. I will probably stick with them for my Touareg.

...Smooth ride, good handling, good traction in wet and dry...

I have the Continental 4x4 contact in size 255/55/18. They are excellent. Much better than the Michelins I took off. Smooth ride, good handling, good traction in wet and dry. They also did well in the snow. I have over 25,000 on them and still have plenty of tread left. I will definitely be buying these again when they wear out.

...The Contact 4x4's may be a bit nosier than sedan type tires, but not much so...

I'm an average-to-spirited driver with a hyper-commute to work of 35 miles each way. We get rain and snow here and these tires performed well above average. When you select tires and read the reviews, make sure you compare the size and weight of the car to your car. Someone driving a Chevy Cobalt will have a very different driving experience than me in a light SUV due to the weight difference. By and large, the Continental Contact 4x4 tires are perfect for my light SUV, they came OEM, and I will be buying a new set soon. I got over a 90000 miles on mine, but they are well past due to be changed out. I never had a flat, no cupping, no uneven wear, and I didn't even rotate them as often as others here have reported. The Contact 4x4's may be a bit nosier than sedan type tires, but not much so. I think any of the Continental tires will work great for your car. Good luck.

...not very good grip on dry cool- better on dry hot southern weather, useless in the rain...

At 13,000 miles these tires are fried, the weight of the GLK350 probably did not help. I really do not care since I hated these tires, mushy, no steering feel or stability, sloppy handling, not very good grip on dry cool- better on dry hot southern weather, useless in the rain. Simply terrible tires but OE on the car. Replacing with Michelin Primacy MXV4.

...Wet traction is miserable. These tires will hydroplane at the thought of water...

These tires are woefully incompetent at everything they do. Dry traction is ho-hum, likely from the bizarrely soft sidewalls. Braking traction is also just ok, lots of wandering with light braking and even more when you get into them. Wet traction is miserable. These tires will hydroplane at the thought of water. The real fun starts when the snow begins. These tires are complete garbage in the snow. Slush, ice, compacted snow, all of it. They float, wander, have no feedback, and basically make travel at anything over walking speed treacherous.
There is exactly ZERO chance I will ever buy these tires again. Don't waste your time!

Worst winter tire ever put on an SUV... It makes the LR4, which has a great 4WD system, look like a complete turd in the winter...

Worst winter tire ever put on an SUV. Why Land Rover would put these on an LR4 out of the factory is beyond me. It makes the LR4, which has a great 4WD system, look like a complete turd in the winter. Would never buy these, but they came with the LR4. Just waiting for them to run down this summer before putting on a good set of tires before another Chicago winter.

...Winter performance where I live (hills, dirt roads, lots of snow covered roads) is marginal at best.

A good tire for three season use but it wears very quickly and I maintain proper inflation and rotate my tires. It wears so quickly in fact that I would be very reluctant to purchase them again. Winter performance where I live (hills, dirt roads, lots of snow covered roads) is marginal at best.

Volvo dealer said car was in alignment. Have read a number of blogs where other Volvo XC90 owners report similar poor tread life. Would not buy this tire again.

Tread wear is surprising very bad. I have had these tires for 9 months, and only 9000 miles and the tires are almost on their replace indicator. It is very disappointing. I also feel very unstable in turns at higher speeds like a shifting under the tires is happening. I look forward to replacing these but expected to get at least 2 years out of them and looks like I will only get a year.
