The Firehawk GT w/UNI-T is Firestone's High Performance All-Season tire developed for sporty performance sedans and coupes. The Firehawk GT is designed to allow drivers to feel the freedom of the road by blending long treadwear and responsive handling with dependable traction on dry and wet roads, as well as in light snow.

Firestone's UNI-T Technology focuses on three primary tire components, the beads, casing and tread, which influence overall performance by enhancing comfort, handling and traction. On the outside, the Firehawk GT molds a long wearing, high-silica tread compound into an asymmetric tread design that features large outside shoulder blocks to enhance steering response and cornering stability. Inside shoulder blocks feature more lateral grooves and sipes to provide the additional biting edges that aid traction in foul weather. The Firehawk GT radial's continuous center ribs enhance responsiveness, as well as wet and dry traction when accelerating or braking. The entire tread design features Firestone's Veri-pitch sequencing of block shapes and sizes to help reduce tread pattern noise. The Firehawk GT's structure includes twin, steel belts reinforced by spirally wrapped nylon to enhance driving control and provide long, even treadwear while minimizing weight and enhancing ride quality. A polyester cord body and hard rubber sidewall reinforcements enhance steering response and cornering stability.

2006 BMW E90 325i Sedan

Refreshed to address the year-round driving needs of today’s performance enthusiasts who may encounter intermittent light snow, the new Firehawk GT w/UNI-T High Performance All-Season tire line reestablishes the Firehawk GT name in Firestone’s family of performance tires. Designed to allow drivers to feel the freedom of the road, the new Firehawk GT blends long treadwear and responsive handling with traction on dry and wet roads, as well as in light snow.

In order to confirm how the new Firehawk GT tires measure up to some of today’s other High Performance All-Season tires, we compared the V-speed rated Firestone Firehawk GT to the V-speed rated BFGoodrich Traction T/A, Dunlop SP Sport Signature and Yokohama AVID V4s tires.

Our evaluation used 2006 BMW 325i E90 sedans, with new, full tread depth 205/55R16-sized tires mounted on 16x7.5" wheels.

What We Learned on the Road

Our 5.6-mile loop of expressway, state highway and county roads provides a great variety of road conditions that include city and highway speeds, smooth and coarse concrete, as well as new and patched asphalt. This route allows our team to experience noise comfort, ride quality and everyday handling, just as you would during your drive to school or work.

All four tires in our test delivered on their promise of responsive handling with comfortable road manners. As in previous tests, the Yokohama AVID V4s received praise for its comfortable ride and relatively low noise level, especially along the rough expressway section. Dunlop’s Signature Sport was not far behind, also delivering a smooth ride and scoring well with our team. The BFGoodrich Traction T/A and Firestone Firehawk GT both displayed acceptable ride comfort, while generating minimal but noticeable tread and impact noise over the course sections of our test drive.

At normal road speeds, the handling scores for the Traction T/A and Firehawk GT were a virtual tie, feeling crisp and delivering quick response to the driver’s input. The Signature Sport also handled well, with slightly slower initial response to steering inputs than the BFGoodrich or Firestone tires. The AVID V4s counter-balanced its advantage in ride comfort with a small reduction in responsiveness versus the other tires.

What We Learned on the Test Track

Our 1/3-mile per lap test track course includes 90-degree street corners, lane changes and simulated expressway ramps. Run in both dry and wet conditions, the test track allows our team to experience the traction, responsiveness, handling and drivability normally only encountered during abrupt emergency avoidance maneuvers or competition events.

In dry conditions, the Dunlop Signature Sport felt very responsive and nimble, slicing its way through the lane change/slalom and around the tight corners. Subjectively the overall grip level didn’t feel as though it equaled the tire’s responsiveness, but this didn’t hold back our team as this tire drove its way to the quickest overall lap time of this test. Very close behind was the Firestone Firehawk GT, which delivered stable cornering and balanced handling. The BFGoodrich Traction T/A was also easy to control at the limit, but lacked the ultimate grip needed to post the quickest lap time. Just like on the road, the trade-off in handling for ride comfort impacted the Yokohama AVID V4s’ handling. Overall grip felt quite good, while steering response and cornering lacked some of the precision and stability of the Dunlop and Firestone tires.

In the wet we usually see larger differences between tires. In this case, however, the differences were not as big as often seen in past tests. Only 4/10th second separated the fastest to slowest tire, showing how close all four tires are to each other. In the wet, the BFGoodrich tire lead the way with the quickest overall lap time, fastest time through the slalom transition and highest steady-state cornering (average g-forces). The Yokohama lapped our course only 2/10ths behind, where its somewhat slower responsiveness and soft handling in the dry proved to aid feel and driver confidence in the wet by providing plenty of feedback and controllability at the limit. The responsive steering of the Dunlop resulted in a somewhat edgy feel in the wet. In close fourth place overall was the Firestone Firehawk GT, which didn’t quite have the wet grip displayed by the other tires.

...They grip well with air temps in the mid-40F range, are confident on a wet track, provide audible feedback when nearing traction limits and work fairly well on the street if a little loud at highway speeds...

Bought these tires in early 2022 for HPDE as I was wanted something that would last a full season of learning. Compared to Michelin PS4S the ECF turns the grip on quick, are extremely heat-tolerant and consistent over 30min sessions (even with 90F air temps), and have a predictable rear breakaway. They grip well with air temps in the mid-40F range, are confident on a wet track, provide audible feedback when nearing traction limits and work fairly well on the street if a little loud at highway speeds. On a 3900lb sedan I start at 30PSI cold and target 35PSI hot for the second session on and never experienced rollover at those pressures like I did with PS4S (trashed a front left due to that). -2.0 front camber worked well on my heavy car, but I think a bit more would have been most ideal. Mine have 7 track days with at least 30 sessions on them along with a thousand or so road miles and there is plenty of life remaining, though I did flip them on the wheels after their third day to even out wear.

I highly recommend this tire however note, I have performed major suspension modifications on this mx5 to get rid of excessive roll.

Running 225/40/17 on 8" and 275/35/18 on 10". Exceptional grip! Once it quickly warms up, and compared with my previous tire the Falken RT-660, it provides more initial grip than I expected. I wonder how well it holds up against the Michelin Cup 2... The Continental ECF really hooks up during canyon carving sessions on the Snake and other local twisty back roads with predictable breakaway and recorvery. I can't vouch for track events but I fully expect that it would perform well during local HPDE events, especially if the surface is wet. I'd likely add more camber and toe if my 300k mile NSX was a weekend fun car, but since I try to drive it daily, compromises must be made to keep my wife and wallet happy!

We have run our tires for 5+ hours in racing conditions, and 4 days of testing, and every time we hit the track the tire feels exactly the same as it did when it was brand new. Despite being on its 5th+ heat cycle, we are able to continue to improve our lap times while developing our car despite the tire getting older... This is the perfect tire for anyone who wants a competitive track day tire that doesn't require insane cool-down laps to remain fun, while also lasting an entire season of racing and daily driving...

We use these tires for endurance racing and they have been fantastic. They lack the grip of an RE71Rs, A052, or some of the other super 200tw tires, but they fall off FAR less, and last forever.

The best way to describe these tires, they are an RS4 that is faster, that does NOT heat cycle out.

We have run our tires for 5+ hours in racing conditions, and 4 days of testing, and every time we hit the track the tire feels exactly the same as it did when it was brand new. This is the perfect tire for anyone who wants a competitive track day tire that doesn't require insane cool-down laps to remain fun, while also lasting an entire season of racing and daily driving.

This tire is not the "Best" tire out there, but it genuinely serves a purpose of being fast enough, while being insanely durable, and not falling apart after 1-2 heat cycles (like the RS4). Our frustration with that tire was that we had to throw away tires after 1 weekend because their pace dropped off by 1-2s+/lap and felt horrible. The Conti ECF has been consistently improving in lap times heat cycle after heat cycle despite their age and wear.

We started at a 1:34.1 at Atlanta Motorsports Park. We've made some updates to the car and ran a 1:32.5 on the 4th heat cycle. Adjusted our splitter angle and dropped our lap time down to a 1:31.8. So despite their age, we are finding more and more lap time every time we take the car out on track. Some of that is development of the car, but the tires are still hanging in there giving us the same feel each time we go out. (Similar weather conditions for each session).

...They also had excellent treadwear life and seemed quieter than the Falkens or Direzzas on the open road...

The Continental Extremecontact Force were my summer and track tires. I completed 6 track days (A group), 5 autocrosses and numerous Porsche club driving tours. I'm ranked as an A group driver in our PCA HPDE events.
The Extremecontact Force have comparible grip to the Falken RT660 and Dunlap Direzza (ZII and ZIII). These tires had quick turn in and responsiveness as any of the 200tw tires I've had. They also had excellent treadwear life and seemed quieter than the Falkens or Direzzas on the open road. The big drawback is Continetals lack of sizes in 18" & 19". Consequently, I will be switching to a different tire for 2023 with a wider range of sizes (245/35, 275/35).
