The Proxes R1R is Toyo's Extreme Performance Summer tire developed for driving enthusiasts looking for capabilities beyond normal street tire limitations. Developed from Toyo's years of grueling on-track experience, Proxes R1R tires are engineered to elevate performance in dry and wet conditions. However, like all Extreme Performance Summer tires, these tires are not intended to be serviced, stored nor driven in near- and below-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice. It's also essential these tires be stored indoors at temperatures maintained above 15 degrees F.

The Proxes R1R molds a high-grip, silica-reinforced tread compound into an 8/32" to 9/32" deep directional Arrowhead tread design featuring an extra wide footprint to blend handling and performance during spirited dry-road driving with traction in wet conditions. The leading edges of the arrowheads are tapered to stabilize center block movement to reduce the possibility of irregular wear. Multi-Width EVAC Channels improve water evacuation from the center of the tread design to help increase hydroplaning resistance, while their narrow widths at the shoulders increase block size to enhance steering response and maintain block stiffness during aggressive braking.

The tire's internal structure features an advanced competition-inspired modified radial construction for driving hard through the corners and accelerating quickly onto the straight-aways. Twin high-tensile steel belts reinforced with spirally wrapped jointless cap and edge plies control the footprint size and shape. Jointless beads anchor the tires to the wheels while a high-modulus bead compound and slightly angled body plies work together to stabilize the sidewall.

NOTE:

At the end of 2014, Toyo changed the Uniform Tire Quality Grade (UTQG) of their Proxes R1R Extreme Performance Summer tire to reflect a 200 Treadwear rating.

UTQG ratings for Treadwear, Traction and Temperature are based on tests conducted by tire manufacturers and reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). These regulations allow tire manufacturers to under-rate their tires' capabilities, but prohibit over-rating them. UTQG ratings are required to be printed on their labels and branded on tire sidewalls.

Toyo assigned the 140 Treadwear rating to match the UTQG Treadwear rating required by competition rules when the Proxes R1R was introduced, however subsequent Toyo wear data revealed the tire line earned a 200 Treadwear rating.

With some competition rules now requiring higher UTQG Treadwear ratings, Toyo decided it was time to officially change the Proxes R1R line's rating to accurately reflect its capabilities.

*In order to help drivers confirm which tire they will receive, we have identified the tires by listing their Treadwear rating on the product Specs tab.

Customers Say

Customers say the Toyo Proxes R1R delivers exceptional dry traction and confident cornering, with many praising its track-ready grip and responsiveness during autocross, HPDE, and spirited driving. Wet performance earns praise for strong rain grip and predictable handling on damp roads, though some note hydroplaning risks in standing water. Treadwear receives mixed feedback-enthusiasts report rapid wear under aggressive track use but find tread life manageable for a 200TW tire when driven moderately. While optimized for warm conditions, users caution against cold-weather use below 40°F. The soft compound balances sticky performance with expected trade-offs in longevity, making it a favorite for dry-focused performance driving.

For me, the Toyo Proxes R1R tires are the way to go. They're a fantastic tire to learn how to drive on. I've had a set on my Integra Type-R for a little over a year. I originally purchased them because they were rated for rain. Their performance on wet roads and even greasy post-rain roads is phenomenal. Shortly after purchasing them, I went on a 'spirited cruise' through greasy mountain roads behind a bunch of Supras. Needless to say, these tires allowed me to stay right on their bumpers the whole run. Everyone had traction issues that day except for me. They're great in the wet and even better in the dry. If you live somewhere which experiences a lot of rain, these are perfect.

...The R1Rs are even further ahead on a wet track or road...

Very impressed with this tire. On my car, a very light STR class Miata, they are way, way better than the Rivals I previously ran (never could get the Rivals up to temp on my car). Only one event on the R1Rs, so far, but my impression is that they are just a little below full on R compounds, and I haven't even worked out the ideal pressures yet. The R1Rs are even further ahead on a wet track or road.
Re-rating this tire to 200 ware made all the difference for me. Now it's legal in ST classes!

Just ordered a replacement set, that should say enough.
Run these in the street and for wet track days. Ran them up to 100mph in the rain at Watkins Glen. They cut through standing water well and are pliant enough for steet use. Dry grip with some heat in them is great on the road too. Great tire

Easily the 'grippiest' tires I've ever owned. Very soft compound that provides for awesome dry handling, but also balanced with great wet weather characteristics. I drive rather aggressively (some track time on these) and have worn these almost completely bald in 10,000 miles. Not very happy with the treadlife, but that is expected with such a soft tire. Going to try out the Direzza ZIIs next, but the R1Rs have set the bar pretty high.

...Dry road conditions are incredible. The tires bite hard, warm up fast, don't seem to overheat very quickly, and continue to provide progressive traction...

I use these tires on my turbo '96 miata for mostly autocross, HPDE, the occasional track day, and of course driving to/from the events (occasional daily duties when weather permits). Coming from the Falken 615k, I would say the R1R's are in an entirely different league. The only real downside to the R1R (aside from cold temperatures, they will turn into bricks) that I can find is if you manage to drive into standing water. They WILL hydroplane. Barring that scenario, the traction is very progressive and communicative in dry or wet conditions. Wet roads leaving a little to be desired, the tires get a little slippery, but easily controllable. If it's cold AND wet, may be worth staying home... Dry road conditions are incredible. The tires bite hard, warm up fast, don't seem to overheat very quickly, and continue to provide progressive traction. After 5,000 miles (hard miles) the tires still look almost brand new. At this rate, I may be able to finish this season and continue into next season on this same set. Strongly recommended. These tires are designed to go fast, I am not going to comment on ride quality or NVH or other things that don't matter when you're setting fast times... If fast times are your goal, these are the tires for you. I don't think you're going to find anything better short of a true R-compound with under 100TW or a full racing slick. Get out there and go racing.

Customers praise the Toyo Proxes R1R's treadwear for track-focused use, with many scoring 8s and 9s noting impressive longevity through multiple heat cycles, autocross runs, and endurance races. While some mention rapid wear on street-driven cars, enthusiasts highlight manageable tread life for soft-compound performance, exceeding expectations in lightweight setups. A few report uneven wear under aggressive alignment but view it as a trade-off for dry-track prowess.

About 10k and a year on this tire... The center wore more so I'd go even lower next time!...

About 10k and a year on this tire. First 200AA tire. I lowered the pressure down to 25psi range, gained some stickyness. The center wore more so I'd go even lower next time!

My car is swapped, makes 450whp, and weighs 2250lbs, so it's hard to get traction with it. I do lots of back roads and highway pulls. That's basically all I do. The car has seen rain with these and it wasn't a problem at all.

When it gets cold out I take em off. Usually in the winter, I'm spinning them in 4th gear. In the summer, 3rd half hooks and it's pretty fun!

I recommend these for serious hoonery and they last quite awhile!!!

...If you are looking for a great entry level R-compound tire, or tires for your weekend vehicle, I would highly recommend these; but not for an everyday driver, as they wear incredibly fast ( 120 wear rating)...

I purchased these for my CRX when I was autocrossing (SM2 Class). I ran with them for 3 full seasons, as well as a couple track days at Road Atlanta and some fun driving in the mountains. The steering response from these tires are incredible, takes some time to get used to if you are not used to "r" compound style tires. One of the most surprising aspects of this tire is it's wet handling; they handle water better than a handful of all-season tires I have used. If you are looking for a great entry level R-compound tire, or tires for your weekend vehicle, I would highly recommend these; but not for an everyday driver, as they wear incredibly fast (120 wear rating).
