The Ridge Grappler is Nitto's Rugged All-Terrain tire developed for drivers of SUVs, Jeeps, and pickup trucks seeking a stylish, capable, and durable off-road tire that can be reasonably driven in towns and highways in-between their adventures.
The Ridge Grappler's durable compound is molded into a symmetric tread pattern featuring robust reinforced tread blocks with tapered edges which optimize surface contact for competent dry grip. Variable pitch tread blocks of slightly different sizes reduce road noise for enhanced on-road comfort. Step block edges and staggered shoulder lugs combine for advantageous grip characteristics across many all-terrain environments. The Lateral zig-zag patterned Z grooves promote efficient water evacuation to the shoulder notches, while sipes in the tread blocks assist hydroplaning resistance and wet traction on paved surfaces. A high void ratio and multitudinous biting edges deliver confident traction in light snow.
Internal Construction of the Ridge Grappler includes a two-ply reinforced polyester casing for durability and ride comfort. Two high-tensile steel belts offer a sturdy foundation for even load distribution across the footprint. Two nylon reinforcement plies further stabilize the tread for high-speed handling and durability.
As with all Grappler tires, each Ridge Grappler tire features two unique sidewall designs. One side is more traditional while the other features a more aggressive block design.

All-Terrain Tires Off-Road – 2025 Test 9(17:52)
In a Tire Rack first, we took popular On-Road, Off-Road, and Rugged All-Terrain, as well as Off-Road Max Traction tires, to an off-road driving park to see how these categories compare off the beaten path! As we continue to expand our testing program, we are working towards a full-scale off-road portion that aligns with the objective and subjective format of our road-focused testing. In the meantime, there’s no time like the present to kick up some dust and get a feel for these tires in an off-road environment. So, join us as TJ and Brent take a subjective ride in the sand, across river rock, and attempt a hill climb!
Consumer feedback shows the Yokohama AVID GT delivers strong comfort with many praising its smooth ride, though some note inconsistent noise levels. Treadwear scores raise concerns, with frequent low ratings indicating premature wear. Winter traction is a weak point, with many scores below 5 highlighting limited capability in snow and ice. Wet traction earns positive marks (7-8 range) for reliable grip, though hydroplaning resistance shows mixed results. Dry traction stands out as a strength, with high scores (8-10) for confident handling and stability. While excelling in comfort and dry performance, buyers prioritizing longevity or severe winter conditions may find limitations.

...But there has been a lot of rain since getting the car and these feel extremely secure, handling remains agile making me feel very confident on wet rainy roads...
This is the stock tire on my new Subaru Legacy Limited XT and I was very pleasantly surprised. I've come to not expect the best from an OEM tire but these are excellent in every condition I've driven on. It will be a while before there's any snow here to make any assessment on snow handling. But there has been a lot of rain since getting the car and these feel extremely secure, handling remains agile making me feel very confident on wet rainy roads. Dry handling has also been excellent with very good steering response and secure footing on twisty curving sections. In addition, perhaps not as important, these are very good looking tires. I'm proud to have them on my car and would definitely buy them again unless they prove horrible on snowy roads which I wouldn't expect.

Performance is great. Dry,wet, light snow they don’t disappoint. They are loud, some road surface worse than others but much louder than previous Cooper RS3~G1 which are not available in my size Would I buy again? Not sure, may try Cooper Cobra Instinct or a different Yoko tire.

Most customers rate dry traction highly with scores 7-10, highlighting responsive handling and reliable grip. A few lower ratings suggest occasional concerns, but overall performance excels for Grand Touring use.

...The tires are fantastic for handling, noise, and fuel economy...
This tire came on my 20 Corolla Hatchback XSE from the factory. I was surprised to have such a high end brand from the factory. The tires are fantastic for te handling, noise, and fuel economy. They look great which I a plus also, but not a important as they perform. I will be buying these again when it's time to replace this set!

These were original equipment on our 2022 Outback. They were comfortable and quiet from day one, and provided excellent traction under all conditions, including one bad snowstorm where my wife found herself driving down I-71 in a caravan with several other Subarus having no problems at all while other vehicles were spinning out. The tires were not quite worn down to the wear bars, but the car had gone out of alignment and the inner tread was gone, so new tires were in order. I was surprised at how poorly rated these tires were based on our experience. They have been replaced with Yokohama Avid Ascend GTs; I expect these will do even better based on the reviews.

Winter traction ratings for the Yokohama AVID GT show concerning scores, with many customers reporting 0-5s for snow/ice performance. Frequent mentions of slippery conditions, loss of traction, and getting stuck highlight its lack of winter capability despite being an all-season tire. Some 7-10s exist but are overshadowed by widespread dissatisfaction.

So utterly embarrassing that Subaru puts these on the otherwise capable Legacy. Found out the hard way that in cold temps they turn into a hockey puck. Useless in even a small amount of snow. Perfectly fine in summer, but for a Subaru buyer that's almost irrelevant.

...But I lost a significant amount of brake performance below 32F, even on dry road. Fortunately the AEB saved me 3 times...
Another Subaru OE tire victim reporting: After 1.5 years, 18,000 miles, I measured 6/32 tread remaining. But I lost a significant amount of brake performance below 32F, even on dry road. Fortunately the AEB saved me 3 times. The sidewall is very soft, resulting in a non-responsive steering that ruins the essence of a Subaru chassis. Noise is relatively loud at a higher pitch.

Mixed treadwear ratings with concerning 0-5 scores (unacceptable tread life, premature wear) alongside some 9s-10s. Many customers report rapid wear, needing early replacement despite being Grand Touring All-Season.

...Treadwear is also unacceptable for a touring tire. I'm good about rotating tires every 5k miles, but these still experienced extreme wear on the inside edges...
OE tires on my 22 Outback. Almost considered replacing them in the first week of ownership. Slid around a damp corner at a reasonable speed and immediately realized I needed to adjust my driving style on these tires. Couldn't bring myself to replace them on a brand new car so let it ride and am now replacing them with Michelin Defenders. Treadwear is also unacceptable for a touring tire. I'm good about rotating tires every 5k miles, but these still experienced extreme wear on the inside edges. Just an all around BAD tire. Don't buy.

...Unfortunately, the tires are down to 3/32 which is unacceptable for the mileage and driving conditions. I cannot recommend these tires.
I'm mostly writing to reference the below average tread life. I do 95% highway and city driving & 5% dirt/gravel. I occasionally tow a very light boat in both conditions. We've had the tires rotated every 6k-ish by the dealer. Unfortunately, the tires are down to 3/32 which is unacceptable for the mileage and driving conditions. I cannot recommend these tires.

The Ridge Grappler is Nitto’s Rugged All-Terrain tire that is perfectly at home on SUVs, Jeeps, and pickup trucks. Tires in this category need to be capable and durable off-road as well as maintaining some manners on-road.
