The AVID TOURING-S is Yokohama's Standard Touring All-Season tire developed for the drivers of coupes, sedans and minivans. It was designed to combine ride quality, smooth handling, durability and traction in any season, including in light snow.

The AVID TOURING-S uses Yokohama's Tri-plex Tread Compound to provide long tread life and all-season traction. This compound is molded into a symmetric tread design that features Silent Shoulder variable tread block sizes and a central Twin Rail Stability Rib to reduce tread pattern noise while offering confident maneuverability. The intermediate tread blocks feature Tapered Rain Channels working in tandem with circumferential grooves to help evacuate water and enhance wet traction while Cross Traction sipes provide biting edges to increase traction in wintry conditions. The tire's internal structure includes twin steel belts reinforced by nylon belt edge strips on top of polyester body plies that are stabilized by tall, tapered rubber sidewall inserts for better absorption of bumps and road vibrations.

...They do really well in the rain and snow; hydroplaning hasn't been an issue...

I was surprised at the responsiveness and all-around traction capabilities of these tires. They do really well in the rain and snow; hydroplaning hasn't been an issue. These Yokohamas completely trump the Goodyear Eagle RS-A's that I had on before. At first I wasn't sure what to think because they felt a little light in the steering. Then I realized that the Eagle RS-As are just clunky (it felt like I was driving on dozer tracks compared to the Avid Touring). The Yokos are a tad noisy, but for the price, you can't beat 'em! These are what a middle-of-the-road (haha) tire should drive like. I HIGHLY recommend.

...Today was the first day we had a heavy rainfall and the tires really impressed me with traction and handling there as well. There was no slippage or unsteady feeling at all. It was the first time in quite a while that I felt confident on a wet road...

I recently got a set of these for my Altima to replace the OE Continental tires which at close to 50k had been pretty dangerous in wet weather. I read through the reviews online and I am glad that I purchased these. The one thing that I saw in some reviews that made me a little nervous were references to them being really noisy. I am very happy to say that these are much quieter than my Continentals were. I have driven them on a good mix of rough and new city and highway roads and I am really impressed with them. One thing I wasnt expecting them to be better about was speed bumps. Speed bumps used to be jarring on the old tires. These handle the parking garage speed bumps with much more grace. Today was the first day we had a heavy rainfall and the tires really impressed me with traction and handling there as well. There was no slippage or unsteady feeling at all. It was the first time in quite a while that I felt confident on a wet road. For the price, these tires seem like a great deal. Overall, they are very quiet and comfortable, and yet the handling of the car has still been great. Being fairly new, I can't comment on the treadwear yet.

...They have been great in the snow and rain. Traction is excellent...

I have never done a tire review, but I have been so happy with these tires, I wanted to do it. I have owned many different tires over the years. Several brands and types. These by far have been the best I have owned. Overall, the Yokohama brand has been very good, but this particular tire has been great. I did not want to do a review until I had the tires for awhile. They have been great in the snow and rain. Traction is excellent. Great handling and quiet. Had my first rotation, and they are wearing very well. Cannot say enough about this tire. I hope they keep making them. I will buy them for any of my other cars if available. The other point to mention is the price. Very affordable; especially for what you get.

I purchased this tire like many others, because of the excellent wear reviews and their price. I live in NW Indiana, right at the tip of Lake Michigan, so I was not sure these would be able to handle the tremendous amount of Lake Effect snow we encounter. I had these installed right before Thanksgiving, and through the season the performed great. I even made it to work in my Sonata during the huge blizzard that shut down Lake Shore Dr. in Chicago...yes I was one of the idiots on the road. The performed great, and I did not get stuck once in over 12" of snow...this was fresh snow at the time, so I'm sure it would be a different story if it was wet snow.
My only issue with this tire is it's traction on wet roads on rainy days. The only way I can take off from a stop without "chirping" the tires is to put my car in 2nd gear. I don't knoow why they worked so great last winter, but I get this issue with water. THe stopping distance is also not great, as I had a car pull out in front of me on a rainy day last week. The intersection was about 100 yards ahead of me when they decided to creep across the road and I stepped on my brakes and slid right at him. If he would have been going any slower we would have hit. I can say I fely in control steering wise, but I just could not stop.

We have another winter upon us, so I will try to remember and post back in the spring. Overall right now I am happy with these tires, and for the price and winter performance, who wouldn't be!

I purchased in the fall to replace old Pirellis, which were very good tires. Since I'm in north east Indiana I waited for some snow to fall before rating these Avids. I'm delighted with this tire so far. They ride very nicely, no road noise that I discern. They perform well in both snow and rain. I think this tire purchase was great bang for the buck!

...Dry traction is excellent, and handling characteristics are predictable and appropriate for a T (or S) rated tire-- with steering response feeling slightly numb...

The Avid Touring-S is an outstanding value! Superior ride comfort and very low noise levels are definitely the tire's strongest point-- comparable to the much pricier Goodyear Assurance ComfortTread. Dry traction is excellent, and handling characteristics are predictable and appropriate for a T (or S) rated tire-- with steering response feeling slightly numb. However, the tire falls short on wet traction. I have to be very careful to avoid spinning the wheels when launching from a stop in the rain. I drive a light-weight front drive vehicle with a manual transmission which facilitates this by default, but I did not have to be as careful with previous sets of tires. Once in-motion, wet traction is stable though not great, so automatic drivers shouldn't have quite the concern. I do not get any snow, so cannot comment on that front. I have 30,000 miles on my set, and predict a 60,000 to 70,000 thousand mile lifespan. Proper inflation, alignment and rotation is a must for any tire if you expect it to last-- it amazes me how many people neglect this. (A note on treadwear warranties: They are a marketing tool used by tire manufacturers. Your tire will most likely not last the length of the warranty. This is not cause to write a scathing review.)

Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase. This is my second review of this set, and with increased mileage, I have not been disappointed. Living in Southern California, wet traction is not a priority, and the outstanding ride comfort and quietness can not be beat for the money. It's USA made too!

...Dry traction is much better than expected for a touring tire...

These are really excellent all around tires. Our (mine and wife's) spirited driving has taken a little off the corners of these tires than would otherwise been the case for a mellow driver which proves the great mileage we have gotten with these things. There is more tread left on 40K than I would expect.

Dry traction is much better than expected for a touring tire.
Wet traction is very predicatable and stable. I am impressed with the traction.
Noise is almost always quiet.
I have rotated every 5k and there is absolutely no feathering or irregular wear.
Balance has been beyond exceptional. Build quality is excellent.

These tires are a long wearing, very stable and prudent choice in tires especially if you scoot around alot running errands or put in mega miles.
Definitely would buy again.

...I've noticed much better handling in wet and dry conditions. When I punch the gas, I actually feel like the car is trying to keep up with the tires instead of the other way around...

I just put two Yokohama AVID Touring-S tires on the front of my 2003 Saturn Ion. The change in noise level was shocking. I knew my old tires were bad, but I forgot how quiet driving could be. This is the first time in this car that I actually appreciate the tires and driving with the radio turned off. I'm going back to get the back tires replaced as soon as I can. I've noticed much better handling in wet and dry conditions. When I punch the gas, I actually feel like the car is trying to keep up with the tires instead of the other way around. I just got the tires, so I hope my opinion stays the same for the 60,000 mile rating. I paid $170 total for the two and feel like they were worth every penny.

...Customers mention that "The solid center rib of the Yokos give it great on-center feel on the highway."...

Previous tires: Douglas XtraTrac II, 185/70/14

So far, I've noticed a drastic improvement of steering feel and response over the XtraTracs. They were a cheap Wal-Mart special to get the car moving, since the original tires (BF Goodrich Traction Advatnage T/A, 185/75/14) were dried out and cracking.

Dry grip is definitely there. I haven't tested any hard braking yet, but in corners the Yokohamas stick where the Douglas' would start to chirp. The solid center rib of the Yokos give it great on-center feel on the highway. The 91 load rating also helps.

I haven't run these through the Oregon rain storms yet, since it started clearing up right after I had them installed, but in the bit of rain we had, I could hardly feel the wet. With the Douglas', I could feel them start to hydroplane at 60 MPH, but I went up to 65 with the Yokos and even a bit of light swerving didn't affect traction. I'm hoping for a good rainstorm so I can drive these through the deeper puddles that form in the ruts in the road so I can really test the hydroplaning resistance.

I'm not able to rate the snow and ice capabilities, since the valley here rarely gets snow. I'll have to wait until next year, and hopefully the tires will still have tread.

My fuel economy seems to have jumped up by 3 MPGs since switching to these. I'll have to wait a few tanks to make absolutely sure it wasn't just because of the nice weather, but I did take the car to the drag strip for a couple passes, and was driving faster than normal on the freeway. I still got back 26.4 MPG when I was averaging 22-23 with conservative driving. With a max pressure of 51 PSI, these make a great balance between performance and economy.

The ordering process was good, and I was called to confirm the non-stock size I ordered. Though I was annoyed when UPS informed me that Tire Rack doesn't allow you to pick up a missed delivery. I had a buyer for my old tires and needed them off by the next day.

Follow-up review to come.

...These are more quiet and smoother than the Conti's... I recommend these tires to anyone who wants a comfortable, quiet ride, and good wet traction...

I replace the OE Continentals with these before any reviews were up based on my knowledge of tire design. I am not an expert but I got the right tires for me. These are more quiet and smoother than the Conti's. They have also been excellent in the rain. We came through Atlanta the night before it flooded and the rain was so heavy we were all going about 40 mph on I-20. I had no problems with traction. I am really pleased and impressed. I mounted and balanced them myself and I did a 4 wheel allignment after they were on the car. I had to rebalance them after about 5000 miles because of a shimmy in the steering wheel. Now they are perfect again. I dont know what the cause was. I recommend these tires to anyone who wants a comfortable, quiet ride, and good wet traction. If you want sporty feel and quick turn in I would try to get something with a stiffer side-wall. These are on my wife's Altima and I just wanted quiet and good wet weather traction.

I love my new Yokohama Avid Touring-S. These tires have superb handling and great traction. There is hardly any resistance when turning the wheels at a stop or during cornering. It feels as if you are gliding down the road. My previous tire was the OE, Hankook Optimo and they do not even come close to my new Yokohama's. Great price with great performance.

I would definitely NOT recommend buying these tires. I've had them installed for 15 months, 25,000 miles later and the tread is already showing massive signs of wear. I will consider myself lucky if I can get another 10,000 miles out of them. I rotate them regularly every other oil change. The handling is what I would expect out of an average tire. The initial ride was smooth with low road noise, but after 15,000 miles its like you were driving on your old tires. I have no alignment issues and my G6 front end is solid.
