The Geolandar M/T G003 is Yokohama’s Off-Road Maximum Traction tire designed for the drivers of pickup trucks, full-size SUVs, Jeeps and dedicated off-road vehicles who want a tire with the traction and durability to travel far off the beaten path, but without the compromises in wet traction, noise and wear drivers of Off-Road Maximum Traction tires, frequently called mud tires, often experience.

tire callouts

The aggressive, off-road focused tread pattern of the Geolandar M/T G003 is molded from Yokohama’s Triple Polymer Blend compound. This high-density compound is cut- and chip-resistant, and helps deliver improved on-road handling and off-road traction. The high-void tread pattern features a block orientation and pitch variation specifically focused on reducing obtrusive noise during on-road driving, and the in-block siping combines with the Triple Polymer Blend compound to deliver confident wet traction.

Geolandar M/T G003 tires utilize Yokohama’s proprietary Geo-Shield Construction. Three polyester body plies (two on load range C tires) wrap around a strong, hexagonal bead to form the tire’s casing. Two high-strength steel belts support the tread and are reinforced by a full-width nylon cap for added durability. Specially-designed Sidewall Armor features over-the-shoulder tread blocks and upper sidewall protection lugs to resist punctures and seek out any available traction in deep, loose terrain.

While Off-Road Maximum Traction tires are branded with the M+S symbol and able to churn through deep snow, their typical oversize applications and the limited number of snow-biting sipes in their large lugs can challenge their on-road wintertime traction on packed snow and icy surfaces.

Longer. Stronger. Shorter. Quieter. This is the mission statement of Yokohama’s new Geolandar M/T G003, with "Go Strong" as the battle cry.

Longer entails longer tread life, with a new, Triple Polymer Blend high-density tread compound and optimized contact patch combining for a claimed 8% longer tread life than the leading competitor’s Off-Road Maximum Traction tire. Stronger is handled by Yokohama’s Geo-Shield construction, three polyester casing plies, two high-strength steel belts and a full-width, nylon reinforcement cap ply designed to provide durability in the tread area along with puncture resistance. The Triple Polymer Blend compound is cut- and chip-resistant, and the upper sidewall lugs and over-the-shoulder tread blocks form Sidewall Armor to deflect debris that may potentially rupture the tire while traversing challenging terrain. Optimized sipes in the tread blocks and the advanced compound deliver 40-0 mph wet braking distances that are 51 feet Shorter than the leading competitor, according to Yokohama, and the tire’s block pattern and pitch variation are engineered for harmonics that result in a tire 2.3 dB Quieter than its predecessor.

To experience first-hand the performance of the Yokohama Geolandar M/T G003, select members of the Tire Rack test team traveled to Gateway, Colorado to participate in a launch event, complete with a scenic drive far off the beaten path and some hard laps around a dirt track in purpose-built, off-road race trucks.

Jeep Wrangler Sport Gateway is home to some of the most ruggedly beautiful landscape in the country, and the route planned by our hosts allowed the team to experience it firsthand. A quick jaunt over paved highway led the convoy of Jeep Wranglers to a dirt road that lazily wound its way along the base of one of the area’s many mesas. This packed, red dirt had a thin layer of loose soil on the surface, but the Geolandar M/T G003 tires never felt nervous or skittish, as can happen in those conditions. In short order, the route began a steep ascent, transitioning from a dirt road, to a grassy two-track, to nothing more than two deep ruts as it continued to climb. Adding to the variable terrain, it began to sleet about an hour into the drive, turning dirt to mud and reducing available traction on all surfaces. A portion of the drive traversed the aptly named "Rocky Road," which consisted of flat, smooth rocks, loose stone, jagged, half-buried boulders, ruts and craters, with steep and abrupt elevation changes throughout. While attempting to pick the right line to navigate through this veritable minefield, the tires’ capability was rarely a concern. One particularly steep incline over the face of a slick, wet rock required two attempts and a considerable amount of throttle, but otherwise the Geolandar M/T G003 never faltered. The same can be said for the steep descent back down the mesa, where, despite the grade being slick with mud, the convoy of Jeeps was able to make safe and controlled progress to lower elevations.

Gateway, Colorado Mesas Though originally scheduled as a dirt track drive, steady rain throughout the morning meant the afternoon experience would be a serious test of the new tires’ mud traction. The 2.2-mile track created for the event consisted of tight hairpins turns and esses, sweeping turns, elevation changes, a long front straight and six jumps. The off-road racing trucks used as test vehicles were rear-engine, tube-frame chassis with long-travel suspension and a rudimentary, fiberglass body shell. At that point, the track surface ranged from tightly packed dirt with the consistency of wet sand in most of the straighter sections of the course, to deep, loose loamy soil that managed to stay relatively dry due to the constant churning from passing vehicles’ tires, to a traction-reducing thick and slimy muck on top of hard pack that felt comparable to driving on ice. The variable conditions, combined with a lack of familiarity with the dynamics of the vehicle and constant barrage of mud being thrown through the glassless front window meant the experience proved challenging for both the tires and the drivers. A healthy amount of trail braking through turns was mandatory to keep weight over the front end and provide the tires with the bite needed to change trajectory. Once rotated, the Geolandar M/T G003 was able to dig into the terrain and put the power down to accelerate away from turns. Yokohama Geolander M/T G003Braking in all but the worst conditions was confidence-inspiring once the driver had a feel for the rate of deceleration on various surfaces, keeping the vehicle under control and preventing excessive understeer through turns. And we can confirm that, combined with the long-travel suspension of the test trucks, the Geolandar M/T G003 provides a luxuriously soft return to terra firma after catching air over the numerous jumps on track.

In all, the Yokohama Geolandar M/T G003 allowed a group of essentially stock Jeep Wrangler Sport models access to remote locales that would have been unattainable for most vehicles. It conquered rocks of all shapes and sizes, deep ruts, dirt roads, wet grass and an off-road course that would have left many tires punctured, shredded or hopelessly spinning in search of traction.

One of the quietest mud tire I?ve ever used, wet pavement traction comparable to good AT tire...

One of the quietest mud tire I’ve ever used, wet pavement traction comparable to good AT tire. I drive many highway miles to get to awesome off-road locations and these tires are great on and off-road . I overland my truck, towing a Boreas XT off-road trailer with about 400lbs tounge weight. Highway pressure about 35psi then drop to 10-15 psi off-road. I rotate every oil change and they are wearing even.
This is my daily driver .

...I will say they don't love pooled water, but traction on just wet roads has been fine...

So far these tires have been great. Surprisingly good traction on all surfaces except ice….but what tire is good on ice???
Much quieter than expected, but you know they are there. Anything off-road I have thrown at it, hasn’t phased them a bit(they can cover the Jeep in mud real quick).
Used them this winter in 6-8in deep snow and they did really well.
Overall for a mud tire, they have preformed on the hwy pretty good. I will say they don’t love pooled water, but traction on just wet roads has been fine.
Gas mileage on my 2016 JK with these tires has been 14-15m/gallon.
I knew when I bought them what I was getting…..I would buy them again.

...I've never had any issues in the snow or in mud maybe some wet grass but other then that not one complaint about these tires!

These are the only tires I'll own I've had them twice now on my lifted Tacoma and the size is almost a 35 everyone thinks they are. But the traction is great. I've never had any issues in the snow or mud maybe some wet grass but other then that not one complaint about these tires!

These tires have been amazing in deep snow and on dirt and mud and gravel and even great on wet rocks driving in a stream bed. On road they are somewhat noisy but I knew that going in. My old falcon wildpeak tires were quieter but not nearly as good in snow or off road.
The KO 3's were my other option. Tires wearing evenly but I dont put on a ton of miles.

...They corner well in dry or wet conditions...

I was looking to purchase all-terrain tires to replace my worn out HT tires on my Renegade Trailhawk when I saw a good buy on these Yokohama MT's. So far on off road ventures over rock, loose dirt and sand they have performed perfectly. Haven't experienced any mud driving yet. Driving through a snow storm over the Tehachapies presented no problem also. I like having the three ply sidewall. It gives me more confidence over rocky terrain. On road I must say it is a bit noisy. These are my first mud tires so i can't compare them to other mud tires. It takes a while to get used to it but now I live with it knowing I'll be fully protected going off road. They corner well in dry or wet conditions. I haven't had them long enough to rate the longevity of the tires.

I have almost 50k miles with still plenty of tread. I drive probably 50/50 highway and offroad/rocky roads.
The tires are quiet for MT, but will get a but louder as they wear down over time. I have no complaints about these tires and recommend these to anyone

...Tread wear has been good so far...

Installed these on a street-legal wheeler in the desert so I can't comment on cold weather or extended highway driving. Very good off-road, no chunking at all, excellent traction in sand and rock. They run fine at 10-15psi without beadlocks.

Pavement manners are much better than you'd expect from such an aggressive M/T. They do throw rocks and have a bit of a whine but not like the old school stuff. Tread wear has been good so far.

Would highly recommend at these for the price point.
