Hoosier Racing Tire Sports Car DOT A7 Radials are Racetrack & Autocross Only tires developed for drivers who compete in autocross, time trial and hillclimb events in dry conditions where responsiveness and high levels of grip at lower operating temperatures are desirable. A7 Radials are also used for road racing on lightweight cars or when competing in cool ambient temperatures where Hoosier Sports Car DOT R6 Radials cannot be brought up to favorable operating temperatures.

WARNING: DOT labeled Hoosier Racing Tires meet Department of Transportation requirements for marking and performance only and are NOT INTENDED FOR HIGHWAY USE. It is unsafe to operate any Hoosier Racing Tire, including DOT tires, on public roads. The prohibited use of Hoosier Racing Tires on public roadways may result in loss of traction, unexpected loss of vehicle control, or sudden loss of tire pressure, resulting in a vehicle crash and possible injury or death.

And like all Racetrack & Autocross Only tires, A7 Radials are not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice. It's also essential these tires be stored indoors at temperatures maintained above 32 degrees F.

Sports Car DOT A7 Radials incorporate a new tread compound designed to extend wear and useable heat cycles, as well as experience less "fall-off" during a long run and less degradation over the life of the tire (compared to A6 tires). The tread compound is molded into a slick tread design interrupted only by five-dash circumferentially oriented grooves alternating outboard and inboard. Beginning with a tread depth of 4/32", they will not require shaving for competition, however they will benefit from a minimal scuff-in prior to their first runs.

The tire's internal structure features a symmetric construction that uses two lightweight steel belts reinforced by a spirally wrapped circumferential nylon cap ply under the tread on top of two nylon cord casing plies. It features a rim recess design on all sizes. Additionally, its symmetric tread design and internal construction allows the tire to be mounted on either side of the car (and later be remounted inside out to further extend its life).

Because of the way tires are manufactured, taking measurements of unmounted tires does not provide an accurate comparison. Hoosier DOT-radials typically have very generous unmounted dimensions, so be sure to mount on appropriate-width wheels before making any judgment related to physical size.

The section width, tread width and shoulder profile of the A7 may differ from those of its predecessor, affecting the clearance between the tire and suspension components and/or body panels. If the intended application is an aggressive fitment with close tolerances, it is recommended to test fit a mounted, inflated tire to check for potential contact between the tire and vehicle before driving on the tires.

Customers Say

Customers think the Hoosier A7 delivers outstanding dry traction, with autocrossers and track drivers praising its "glue-like" grip, precise turn-in, and consistent performance across heat cycles. Many report shaving seconds off lap times and achieving podium finishes, noting improved durability over previous Hoosier models when properly managed with camber adjustments and tire flipping. Wet traction receives mixed feedback-adequate in light rain but prone to hydroplaning in standing water, though most users avoid wet conditions entirely given the tire's competition focus. Treadwear concerns emerge with reports of cording after 45-80 runs depending on driving style and maintenance, though some achieve multiple seasons through careful heat cycle management. While price is a frequent pain point, enthusiasts argue the performance gains justify the cost for serious competitors.

  • 0 negative

Customers overwhelmingly praise the Hoosier A7's dry traction, with most scoring 9s and 10s for its "massive grip," "predictable cornering," and "face-melting" acceleration/braking. Reviewers highlight exceptional consistency across heat cycles, shaving seconds off lap times in autocross and track use. Many note they heat up quickly for immediate peak performance, with precise steering and stability at the limit. While some mention aggressive camber requirements for optimal wear, the A7's sticky compound and responsive handling make it a top choice for competitive drivers seeking maximum dry performance.

I have been autocrossing on DOT R tires since 2000 and this tire is simply the best one yet. Compared to the A6 this one lasts longer and brakes better on my CSP Miata. The first set went 80 runs before starting to cord. Grip is consistent to the end for me but since they are only lasting half a season with my current schedule, YMMV. Age affects rubber and I'm not letting them get old. They handle heat quite well but obviously will overheat with two drivers and more than 6 runs with a 5 minute shot clock in very hot weather and 50+ second courses. Personally I think they work better than the A6 right out of the box and also work better in colder weather. It took Hoosier a while to replace the A6 but I'm glad they did and what a great tire they replaced it with. Hopefully Continental keeps their paws off this product and if they do influence it, I hope its only after they learned a great deal from the ONLY company that has never left the autocross community without a truly competitive tire to play with.

I have run many track tires and by far these hoosier A7s are the stickiest most predictable compound ever. I run the 275/35/15 on a 2200lb, 215 front wheel horsepower supercharged Focus (yes,a Ford Focus) on all 4 corners and first time out set the Super Unlimited track record (1:48.7 seconds) at a 14 turn,2.3 mile road course (Whiskey Hill Raceway in Palmer,Ma)...

(Usually every other event) I scuffed them in on one practice session and used them a week later during time trials. Since then,I have used them for practice and the grip level is as good as ever.(12 heat cycles and counting) I bought another set for the next TT event and will use the original set till they cord. These things make you feel like superman behind the wheel.

...The only things that are negative are: ... deep rain puddles (hydroplaning)...

My 1972 Corvette is used for autocross, with very stiff suspension ,and a big block chevy motor. I've used Kuhmo 710, older Hoosier R3S04, R3S05, & A6, and various "Rim Protector Tires". My tire size is 295/35/17. The A7's are at least as good as the A6. They have very good turn in. Once the limit has been reached, they tend to break loose a bit suddenly, and then slide until enough speed has been scrubbed off to bite again. The A6's progressively slid , without breaking loose. I feel the limits of both tires are about the same. At slightly lower speeds, the A7 sticks like glue, and outperforms street tires with ease. The only tire that has given me a challenge, is the new RE-71 Bridgestone, on little modified Miatas, & Toyota FRS's . Unfortunately , they don't come in my size. I drive the car back & forth to the track, as I got tired of changing tires twice a day. The only things that are negative are: The high price, deep rain puddles (hydroplaning). They do take a set and flat spot when parked over a day. They shake for 1/2 mile ,before warming up. The tire balance was off several ounces. I've never experienced that with any other Hoosier Radial. Over all, I like the tires , because they're the fastest I can get. I would definitely buy them again.

...Traction was great in the dry, and still good in the wet, providing no standing water...

Even with my aggressive driving style the tires performed well in autocross. Traction was great in the dry, and still good in the wet, providing no standing water. This particular set only lasted me one season, because I didn't have the tires flipped on the rim's around mid-season and with my camber setting wore the inner edge of the tire to cords, but had plenty of rubber on outer edge; So tires would have probably gone a season and a half if properly maintained...All in all, I find A7's have a more consistent feel than other slicks and performance tires that I have tried (Z214's, PZero Trofeo R's).

39 customers mention "Treadwear"

  • 17 positive
  • 22 negative

Several reviews express dissatisfaction with treadwear, noting rapid wear and premature cording, particularly on inner edges without mid-season flipping. Some reported needing replacement after just 45 autocross runs or a single season, citing faster degradation than expected despite proper camber setups. While grip remains praised, wear rates disappointed users expecting durability for track-focused use.

I bought the A7's this year because they were advertised to have a longer life than the A6's and only got 45 runs before cording the outsides of BOTH front tires. I will not buy the A7's again, and will recommend against purchasing these tires to all racers.

I autocross 15-20 events / year and went from extreme performance summer tires to autocross race tires about 5 years ago. I've used mostly Hoosier A6's and the Hankook Z214's, and set up sufficient camber, run the recommended tire pressures, watch the temperatures, and flip the tires at about "half-life". I normally get between 140 and 190 runs before the traction is shot or cords are showing. I bought the A7's this year because they were advertised to have a longer life than the A6's and only got 45 runs before cording the outsides of BOTH front tires. I will not buy the A7's again, and will recommend against purchasing these tires to all racers.

...Wear was acceptable for the type of use, but I was surprised that the fronts wore out about the same time as the rears. For all the other tires I have used the fronts last about twice as long as the rears...

I purchased a set of A7s for my Elise after two sets of Hankook 214s with C51 track compound to see if the Hoosiers were worth the extra cost and to see how the softer A compound worked on the track. The A7s performed very well and the softer compound did provide great grip pretty much all the way to the cords. Wear was acceptable for the type of use, but I was surprised that the fronts wore out about the same time as the rears. For all the other tires I have used the fronts last about twice as long as the rears. I may use the Hoosiers again for the fronts, but there is a problem using them on the rear of the Elise. Hoosier's 225/45-17s are about an inch wider in cross section than the Hankooks with the same size designation. There is a great deal of wear on both the tires and the wheel wells at the rear of the Elise. For the rears I will be going back to the Hankooks.
