Directional tires will have a rotation arrow branded on the tire's sidewall. The arrow indicates the direction in which the tire should turn.
Unless they are dismounted and remounted on their wheels to accommodate use on the other side of the vehicle, directional tires are to be used on one side of the vehicle and are intended to be rotated from the front axle to the rear axle. If different tire sizes are used on the front vs. rear axle, the tires become location-specific and prohibit tire rotation unless remounted.

In Germany, some highways do not have speed limits and high speed driving is permitted. Speed ratings were established to match the speed capability of tires with the top speed capability of the vehicles to which they are applied. For example, an R-speed rated tire is designed for maximum speeds of 106 mph. Detailed information can be found in our tech article: How to Read Speed Rating, Load Index & Service Descriptions
When searching by vehicle, you can select the rating(s) based on your vehicle and intended use. When you choose "recommended" you will see the speed rating(s) appropriate for your vehicle. Numbers in parentheses indicate quantity of tires available and do not include winter or competition tire counts that are below your vehicle's recommended speed rating.

Original Equipment tire sizes shown in search results for particular vehicles are determined based on the best information currently available to us from vehicle manufacturers and from manual inspection of new vehicles as they are released. Many vehicles have optional trim levels/packages that include different tire sizes. This "Additional Model Info" is listed for you to choose from in search results as well.
Since variations based on options or vehicle manufacturer changes may determine the Original Equipment tire size on your vehicle, always verify the size you are purchasing matches the tire size for your vehicle (usually found in the door jamb, glove box lid or gas cap door) or in the Owner's Manual.
If you are unsure what size is installed on your vehicle, please confirm the size as listed on the tire sidewall before placing your order.
The Optional Tire Sizes featuring different rim diameters we list for many vehicles are based on over 30 years of experience we have with plus size wheel and tire combinations. However, it is important to note that these optional tire sizes are based on vehicle specific wheel sizes/offsets offered by Tire Rack.

Yes. But keep in mind that many times when a vehicle is equipped with run-flat tires from the factory, a spare tire is not included. Some drivers opt to carry a full-size spare or a space saver spare tire. Another option is to carry an emergency flat tire repair kit for temporary mobility in the event a tire is punctured.
Also note that when you first change from a run-flat to a non-run-flat tire, the installer will need run-flat capable equipment to remove the original tire. Many of our Recommended Installers have this equipment.

Because run-flat tires are so good at masking the traditional loss-of-air symptoms that accompany a flat tire, they require a tire pressure monitoring system to alert the driver that they have lost air pressure. Without such a system, the driver (even an experienced driver) may not notice underinflation and may inadvertently cause additional tire damage by failing to inflate or repair the tire at the first opportunity.

Check your tires' tread depths. When a winter / snow tire has worn to about 6/32", it's ability to provide beneficial snow traction will start to diminish. While still legal at 2/32", a winter / snow tire has worn well past the depth where it provides beneficial snow traction. Also read: Tread Depth – Why Too Little is Never Enough

If you were to put winter tires on only the front or rear of your vehicle, you would create a vehicle with a split personality.
Leading automobile manufacturers such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Nissan and Toyota recommend in their owner's manuals that you install four winter tires for winter driving. By installing four winter tires, you maintain the most balanced and controlled handling possible in all winter driving conditions. It is imperative to keep the same level of traction at all four corners of the car; otherwise, the full benefits of ABS or traction control systems will be lost.
We tested mixed vs. matched tires on vehicles in the winter. Here are the results.

Some wheels are designed to fit multiple vehicle models and will use a centering ring system to reduce the bore size to match the hubs of different vehicles. These rings help to keep the wheel precisely centered on the vehicle hub as the lug hardware is torqued down. The clamping force of the lug hardware in the lug seats is what mechanically centers and secures the wheel in place on the hub.

We know a vehicle's critical component measurements inside and out. We use sophisticated electronic tools that allow our fitment engineers to create extremely accurate drawings of these parts. We do the same for the wheels that we offer and then use Computer Aided Design (CAD) programs to match the wheels to the vehicles. Using these electronic tools we verify numerous different critical areas before a wheel can be listed for a vehicle.

Many wheels are lug centric and do not require the use of a centering ring. They are typically found on truck and SUV fitments. On these applications, the center bore of the wheel is larger than the vehicle hub diameter to allow for various hub/axle configurations that may have been an option from the factory. These wheels need to be installed with the wheel/tire assembly off the ground when the lug hardware is torqued. This allows the lugs to properly center the wheel and secure it on the mounting surface of the hub.

It depends on the vehicle. If a sensor is not installed or the system is not functioning properly, most vehicle's TPMS warning lights will flash at start-up then stay illuminated until the TPMS problem is resolved and sensors are installed on the vehicle and registered to it.
The 2005+ Corvette, on the other hand, will cut engine horsepower (depending on the specific model) and not allow certain performance-oriented vehicle control settings to be accessed whenever the TPMS system is not functioning for any reason.

It's very important to go back and re-torque your lug hardware after the first 50-100 miles of driving on your new wheels. The lug seats of the new wheels will slightly compress and loosen up under the lug hardware as you begin to drive on them. Once this initial breaking in period is over and you re-torque the wheels, it should not be required again until you remove the wheels for rotation or service. Failure to re-torque the lug hardware can allow the lugs to loosen up causing serious vibrations, and in many cases, damage to the wheels, lug hardware, and the vehicle.

Proper size is more than a round wheel of an exact diameter. To properly fit a vehicle a wheel must have the proper bolt pattern, centerbore, offset, width and load capacity to match the measurements we've taken from the vehicle itself. If a wheel's measurements and specs aren't correct for a vehicle, it will not be listed in search results.
Sometimes, if a vehicle is brand new or is an exotic brand, we won't have immediate access to it for measuring purposes. Wheels won't be listed as a match until we can get the necessary measurements.
We set stringent guidelines for the wheels we offer so that you can be sure you are getting the right fit.

Proper installation requires that the wheel lug torque be set to the recommended specification for your vehicle. These torque specifications can be found in your vehicle's owner's manual, shop repair manual or obtained from your vehicle dealer.
Since the thickness of an alloy wheel can differ from Original Equipment wheels, also verify that the lug nuts or bolts will engage the threads. Refer to the chart here to determine the number of turns or the depth of engagement typical for your stud or bolt size.

Installing new brake pads with used, unturned, or worn rotors can also cause warping due to the uneven overheating. Most used rotors will have irregular, grooved wear patterns on the surfaces. Mating this with the flat surface, a new brake pad will generate heat and friction only on the raised areas of the brake rotor causing those sections to heat faster than the recessed areas not touching the pads.
Any brake pad transfer film from the previous set of pads can also affect the new pad's ability to bed-in properly. The residue on the rotor can quickly lead to hot spots on the surface that can result in noise, vibration, dust, and warping problems.
Sticking calipers or other components can also lead to overheating rotors and excessive wear of the brake pads.

When brake pad compounds are overheated, the components crystallize on the surface as the resins and binders begin to melt and break down. This crystallized surface has a lower friction coefficient that simply means it cannot grab the surface of the rotor with the same amount of force as the undamaged pad. The term glazed is used because the pad surface will look smooth, shiny, and metallic like a glazed ceramic tile. Once a pad has been glazed, it cannot be repaired and it needs to be replaced. Glazing is caused by overheating the brakes beyond the operating temperature designed for the pad and/or failure to follow the bed-in procedure for the pads. This type of damage is not a defect in the pad and is not covered under the manufacturer warranty.

The dust produced by brake systems is highly corrosive. If left on the surface of the wheels or on other painted parts of the vehicle long enough, it will begin to etch and erode the paint and other protective coatings. Regular washing and waxing of the wheels will help eliminate brake dust buildup and the resulting damage.

Brake fade occurs when the brake pads are operated in excess of their normal operating temperature. Overheated pad compounds melt and break down, releasing gases that build up between the pad and rotor contact surfaces. This gas layer between the pad and rotor can keep the pad and rotor from making contact and generating friction. It's very much like a tire hydroplaning in standing water or a puck floating over the surface of an air hockey table. When this occurs the trapped gases under the pad literally cause it to float over the surface of the rotor without making physical contact. If the pad can't contact the rotor surface, it can't generate friction and it can't slow down the spinning rotor. The result is a soft feeling brake pedal that will often go all the way to the floor without stopping the vehicle! This can occur very quickly and without warning especially when the brake pads are new and not completely bedded-in.

Bedding-in new pads and rotors should be done carefully and slowly. Rapid heat buildup in the brake system can lead to warped rotors and or glazed brake pads. Most brake pad compounds will take up to 300-400 miles to fully develop an even transfer film on the rotors. The specific bed-in procedure varies depending on the compound type. These bed-in procedures are typically found printed on the brake pad package itself or in the instruction sheet enclosed with the pads.
The recommended bed-in procedures vary for each manufacturer and can be found here: Pad Bed-In Procedures

New brake pads may often produce some initial noise and dusting which will diminish as the transfer film is built up on the bare rotor surface. This is normal for most brake pads and it will go away as the surfaces properly bed-in. Following the bed-in procedures provided by the manufacturer will assure a smooth, even layer of transfer film on the rotor. This helps to minimize brake judder and the possibility of warping the rotors due to uneven heating.

All brake pads must be bedded-in with the rotor surface they are mated with. The bedding-in process involves a gradual buildup of heat in the rotors and pad compound. When properly done, the bed-in will distribute a thin layer of the brake pad compound, called transfer film, onto the rotor surface. This transfer film forms a protective coating on the rotor surface where it comes into contact with the brake pads. As it heats up, the film becomes sticky and allows the pad and rotor to generate the friction and grip required to stop the vehicle without creating hot spots on the rotor surface. The bed-in process normally takes about 300-400 miles of normal driving to complete.

Brake rotors don't warp unless overheated. It's very common to misdiagnose brake problems and attribute them to a warped brake rotor. Warping is caused by excessive heating of the brake rotor and the resulting distortion of the cast iron.
The main symptom of warped rotors is a pulsation felt in the pedal when brakes are applied. If the vibration is felt in the steering wheel or in the dash of the vehicle, it's more likely a completely different problem: brake judder. A simple run-out measurement will confirm the diagnosis.
The only way to confirm a rotor is warped is to measure run-out with a dial indicator gauge. Most shops are equipped with this measuring tool and can check the bare rotor run-outs on the vehicle. If your installer says a rotor is warped, be sure to ask them for the run-out numbers on the rotor as well as the run-out numbers on the hub under the rotor. The new rotor should also be checked for excessive run-out using a dial indicator gauge once it is mounted and before the caliper and pads are installed. If a rotor has excessive run-out of over .004" (.10mm) it should be replaced.
All brake rotor manufacturers will require run-out numbers when processing a warranty claim.
Brake rotors are checked at the factory for machining flaws and excessive run-out before they are packaged and shipped. It is rare for a new rotor to have excessive run-out right out of the box.
If your new rotor does have excessive run-out, please contact our customer service department at 888-541-1777, ext. 360, for a replacement. Do not install or drive using the rotor! Rotor manufacturers will not warranty a used rotor for excessive run-out.

Using new brake pads without bedding them in can lead to excessive dust, vibration, noise, and potential brake failure! Heavy braking during the first few hundred miles of the pad's life can overheat and glaze the pad surface. It can also overheat and warp the rotors.

It's not uncommon for the front brake pads and rotors to wear out faster than the rears. This is because the front brakes do most of the work stopping the vehicle. As the brakes are applied, the weight distribution of the vehicle shifts foreword on the suspension putting more strain on the front brakes. This is why on most vehicles the front brakes are larger than the rears. It's also why most front brakes wear out about twice as fast as the rears. This is normal.
Worn out springs, shocks, or struts can allow the vehicle weight distribution to shift faster and more dramatically, overloading the front brakes. This can result in premature front brake wear.
Sticking caliper pistons, caliper slides, or a damaged parking brake can also cause premature brake wear. When this happens, the caliper cannot retract the pad properly when you let off the brakes and it remains in contact with the rotor. In situations like this, it's typical for the inboard pads next to the caliper piston to wear out very quickly while the outer pad is hardly worn at all. This will generate excessive dust, noise, and heat. It will also wear out the inner surface of the rotor quickly. The tell-tale sign is one wheel with excessive, heavy dusting and noise.
This is not a defect in the pad or the rotor; it's a failure of the caliper and or the related components such as the piston, slides, or the parking brake assembly.
Keep in mind: the pads don't move by themselves! The caliper is what forces the pads into the rotor surface and if the caliper sticks, it can't retract the pads properly which causes excessive pad wear.

As long as the old rotors have been turned or resurfaced to even out the mating surface and remove any old pad transfer film, there should be no major issues reusing your old rotors. Make sure your installer has confirmed the turned rotors are still within the recommended wear limit as stamped on the rotor. Please keep in mind that resurfacing and/or turning a rotor on a brake lathe removes metal and therefore mass from the rotor. It will not be as effective at absorbing and dissipating heat as a new, full thickness brake rotor. It will therefore not be quite as effective as a heat sink or last as long as a new, full thickness rotor.

It's never a good idea to install new brake rotors with used brake pads. As brake pads bed-in and wear down, the surface will become uneven and irregular. This is normal with all pads, but it does mean you should never install new rotors with used brake pads. The irregular surface of the used pads will not mate well with the smooth surface of your new brake rotors. This will cause problems with noise, dusting, and rapid overheating of the brake rotors.

All brake pads are going to release some amount of particles and dust. The amount and color of the particles and dust will vary depending on the pad compound but in general, the more aggressive the compound is, the more dust and noise it will generate. Many ceramic compound pads release a lighter color dust that does not show up as easily on the surface of your wheels. The trade off is often a pad with a lower friction coefficient so it's important to keep in mind you will be giving up some of the initial bite and grip when using a ceramic pad over a more aggressive compound pad.
32,748 out of 65,389 people found this answer helpful • Was this answer helpful to you? Yes | NoThank you for submitting feedback on this answer.
Brake pad compounds are produced by compressing multiple components utilizing high pressures and heat to form the pad shape. These components can include carbon, steel wool, copper fibers, aramid (Kevlar) fibers, along with ceramic and/or petroleum hydrocarbon adhesives/binders.
As the pads get hot, the heat and friction cause the metallic particles in the dust to statically charge as they are worn off the pad surface and that's what makes them stick to the surface of the wheels and other parts of the vehicle. The petroleum hydrocarbon binders also break down releasing an oily, greasy film that clings to the wheels and other components of the car. This is typically more noticeable on the front wheels since the front brakes normally do a higher percentage of the work compared to the rear.
The brake rotors are produced from cast iron. As they wear down, the iron particles wearing off of the rotor and drum surfaces also tend to statically charge and stick on surfaces. In extreme conditions, the hot iron particles can imbed and fuse in the clear coat surface of the wheels. When exposed to moisture, these iron particles will oxidize and the result is rust stains on the wheel surface.

Overheating brake pads beyond their designed temperature range releases large amounts of gas and uneven, sticky deposits of melted binders/fillers that coat the rotor surface. Every time the brake system heats up, those uneven deposits will grip the pad more aggressively than the areas without the deposits. The brake pad will slip over the non-coated areas because it can't grip as well on those bare areas. These heavy concentrations of compound material are called hot spots because they cause uneven overheating on the rotor surface. This can actually alter the molecular structure of the cast iron rotors forming hard spots. Severe overheating forms a compound within the cast iron structure called cementite which is harder and more abrasive than the surrounding iron. It's also not as effective as a heat sink as the surrounding cast iron. The compound cannot wear down these hard spots and the result is more heat building up in those areas and a thumping you can feel whenever you apply the brakes. Continued use of the rotors will expand these areas of cementite and uneven heat distribution. Eventually this will distort and warp the rotor. Once cementite forms in the rotor, it cannot be removed. The rotor needs to be replaced.

New brake pads need a smooth, clean surface to lay down an even transfer film. Residue from the previous pad compound on the surface or an uneven transfer film from overheating the new pads will cause the pads to grip-slip-grip-slip as they pass over the rotor surface under pressure. The resulting vibrations and noise telegraph and amplify as they pass through the suspension and steering components of the vehicle. This vibration and noise is known as brake judder or brake shimmy. This is often misdiagnosed as a warped rotor. If caught early enough, this can be fixed by cleaning the rotor surfaces with 200 grit garnet paper followed by spray brake cleaner to remove any compound buildup on the rotors. Then the pads should be re-bedded following the manufacturer's instructions. Normally this will eliminate the judder and noise issues.

Excessive run-out of the hub could indicate worn wheel bearings that need to be replaced or debris trapped between the rotor and the hub surface. Both of these can cause excessive run-out and pulsations in the brake pedal. Once the hub and bearings are checked, the new rotor should also be checked for excessive run-out using a dial indicator gauge. This should be done before the caliper and pads are installed. If a rotor has excessive run-out of over .004" (.10mm) it should be replaced.

Standard adjustable dampers require one or both ends of the damper to be detached from the suspension before the valves can be adjusted. Externally adjustable dampers do not need to be removed from the vehicle for valve adjustment. They have valve adjustment knobs or buttons on the end of the damper rod or body where they can be reached and adjusted while they are still on the vehicle.

Adjustable dampers have internal valves that can be adjusted to increase or decrease the rebound or compression rate. As damper valves begin to wear, they can be adjusted to bring them back to the same firmness they had when they were new. This procedure can be performed multiple times thus extending the useful lifespan of the damper far beyond that of a standard damper. These also have additional advantages for those customers involved in motorsports. They allow fine-tuning of the suspension for track use and the ability to soften it back up for daily driver use.

The alignment should be checked and adjusted anytime suspension components or the tires/wheels are replaced, upgraded, or otherwise altered. Even something as common as running over a pothole can damage the suspension components and knock the suspension out of alignment.

Most manufacturers list an average lowering amount. You can expect lowering amounts somewhere within that listed range but keep in mind it's an average, not an exact amount. Many variables can affect the overall ride height. These include weight distribution in the vehicle, optional, O.E. suspension packages or other accessories can affect the overall ride height. For example, if your vehicle has a sport package or other optional suspension from the factory, it may not lower as much as a base model vehicle. Having a full or empty fuel tank can vary the starting ride height depending on where the tank is on the vehicle. That's why it's critical to measure the vehicle before and after the installation of any suspension component. You have to establish baseline measurements on each corner to accurately determine how much the ride height has changed.

Aftermarket anti-roll bar kits typically utilize larger diameter bars that require larger I.D. bushings. In most kits, new bushings will be included with the kits that are designed to be mounted in the O.E. mounting brackets. Typically the aftermarket bars are designed to be mounted using the O.E. end links if the vehicle has them. Replacement end links will only be included if a different design is required for the new anti-roll bar. Not all vehicle fitments require the use of end links.

Shocks and struts are both dampers. They dampen the movement of the vehicle springs. Shocks perform only that dampening function. Struts differ in that they not only dampen the spring movement but also take the place of one or more suspension components. Some struts serve as the pivot point for the front steering mechanism, the mount for the hub/brake assembly and the mounting points for brake lines and anti-roll bars. Because of their multiple roles and the way they are mounted within the suspension, struts are also designed to handle side loads and horizontal friction forces.

Shocks and struts dampen the movement of your vehicle's springs. They minimize excessive movement as the vehicle moves over uneven pavement and help keep the tires in contact with the road. The internal valves and seals wear out and most dampers should be inspected and/or replaced after approximately 70,000 miles of normal use. Symptoms of worn shocks and struts include:
- Excessive bouncing or sliding sideways on rough, winding roads
- Vague or loose steering response after driving over a bump
- Front end diving when braking
- Rear end squatting when accelerating
- Excessive body sway or a rolling feeling when turning
- Bottoming out (thumping) when driving over bumps
- Leaking oil on the shock or strut body
- Worn or cracked mounting bushings
- Pitted piston rods
- Excessive wear of the front brakes
- Abnormal tire wear including cupping on the inner shoulders

Alignment is the precise adjustment of the vehicle wheels and suspension components at specific angles. These angles are set to the vehicle manufacturer's specifications. The angles are calculated to keep the vehicle traveling straight without pulling to one side or the other. They are also calculated to minimize tire wear and maximize vehicle stability at higher speeds.

Spring manufacturers mix and match front and rear springs to come up with the best combination for different vehicle applications. This means the actual part numbers on the springs may not always match the kit part number. This is very common. The same kit may also work on multiple vehicle applications and your exact vehicle many not be the one listed on the box label. When in doubt, please check the enclosed bill of materials that came with the spring kit or contact customer service at 888-981-3953, to confirm the part numbers on the individual components to ensure you have the correct parts.

Using a tape measure, start at the center point of the wheel and measure up to the very top of the fender arch opening. Record your results for all four corners of the vehicle. These are your baseline measurements. You will likely find slight differences in ride height from side to side on the vehicle. That's normal on most vehicles. Make sure the vehicle loading is as close as possible when making any before and after measurements. Remember, the springs support the vehicle body and as you add or remove weight (passengers, fuel, cargo, or accessories) the ride height will change slightly.

Yes. The springs should always be installed with the part numbers and manufacturer's logos right side up (so they can be read when installed). Most are marked front/rear. Eibach spring part numbers end in 001 for the fronts and 002 for the rears. H&R springs have VA marked on the front and HA marked on the rears. Other brands are typically marked front and rear. The ends of the spring coil should be indexed correctly in the corresponding notches in the spring perch. Failure to match the coil ends with the notches can affect the ride height as the spring will not fully seat on the perch.

We use the R.I.S.T method as published by the Tire Industry Association (TIA):
- Remove debris from mating surfaces.
- Inspect components.
- Snug lug in a star pattern.
- Torque to spec.
Once lugs are tightened by hand, a compact electric impact gun snugs the lugs in a star pattern to about 40-50 ft-lbs. With the vehicle partially supported, the lugs are then torqued by hand using a torque wrench to prevent joint settling. Finally, with the vehicle on the ground, another torque check is performed with the torque wrench.

Laminated steel lug nuts (like chrome-covered steel lug nuts) can delaminate, separate and create gaps due to moisture or temperature changes. When this happens, the nut will lose its shape and become very difficult to remove.
You can test to see if your lug nuts are swollen by placing your factory lug wrench on your lug/stud. If it's too tight, they cannot be removed, and we will be unable to complete your installation. You will need to have your service center replace the damaged hardware before scheduling installation.

Safety and efficiency are our top priority. A safe location, appropriate space, and healthy lug nuts are important to make sure you are ready for your installation appointment.
- Safe location: We need a safe place to install your tires. We cannot install in open traffic, but we can meet you at your residence or a local parking lot.
- Appropriate Space: We require a flat, paved surface with 6 feet of clearance around your vehicle along with enough space for our installation van. A minimum of 10 feet of vertical clearance is also required.
- Healthy Lug Nuts: All lugs and studs need to be present and in serviceable condition. All lugs must be able to be removed in order to service the wheel and tire. Rusted or swollen lug nuts that cannot be removed will prevent installation.
- Serviceable Wheels: New tires cannot safely be mounted on dented or rusted wheels. If your wheels are dented or rusted over, we will not be able to install your tires.
- Wheel Lock Key: Wheels that have one unique lug will require a wheel lock key. Please have the key, typically stored in the glove box or trunk, available for the technician.

EV tires are designed for "low rolling resistance" (LRR) first and foremost. Tire physics is a complicated subject, but simply: the less force ("rolling resistance") working against your tire, the further it can move on a single charge. LRR is the most consistent characteristic shared by these tires – so typically what separates an "EV Tire" from a traditional ICE vehicle tire is a focus on LRR, noise comfort and the additional weight of the vehicle.

You can! There are trade-offs, of course: you may experience less range than you expect, or more noise compared to Original Equipment (O.E.) or specially designed EV tires, but testing is ongoing and suggests the difference may be less severe as manufacturers develop newer technologies. Thankfully, there’s an EV tire for nearly every driving style and situation. Check out our Tire Decision Guide or speak with one of our Tire Rack sales experts for more information.

The short answer is "yes." EV tires tend to carry a higher cost due to the greater demands on them to balance treadwear, grip, and rolling resistance for heavier vehicles with the expectation of a smooth quiet ride. Although it's worth considering that the lower cost-of-maintenance, fuel prices, and overall vehicle ownership factors may help balance this out.

The lifespan of Classic tires depend on usage, storage conditions, and maintenance. On average, tires can last 6 years from the date of installation or 10 years from the date of manufacture, but it's recommended to inspect them regularly, especially if they aren't used frequently.
