I found the 1.25 amp unit would not charge some batteries. The unit just got damn hot. The company said it, "just stand by their products. I still have it and their smaller one.
Why do the units not charge some batteries?
I have owned several of these Battery Tenders over the years. I ordered this as a replacement for one that failed after many years. This one has worked well. It is not as sturdy as the original, but what is? I would likely purchase again, although would check out a few other units first to see if any seemed more sturdy in construction.
Battery Tender has kept my Optima batteries healthy for nearly 10 years. It keeps the batteries charged but not overcharged or overheated. I leave it plugged in all the time. The first unit lasted 8 years before it got fried in a power surge. Didn't hurt the batteries. This is the easiest way to keep your batteries healthy and ready to go.
I own several collector cars and daily drivers in two states. I use individual Battery Tenders with their plug-in harness on each car to make connecting/disconnecting simple and fast. We have purchased tires and wheels from them several times over the years. They are the best. The service is unexcelled and their pricing competes with most any parts supplier. I purchased this battery tender a year ago. It has made my life a whole lot easier in the winter for the truck(s) and through the summer for my Case tractor that just sitting sometimes drains the battery. I cannot believe I went so many years without a battery tender. Jumping a truck or tractor battery every two to three months (from a door not shut completely or the overhead light or headlights left on...[head shaking and eye rolling]...) this battery tender is a sanity saver as well as providing peace of mind.
This is my 3rd Battery Tender Plus I have purchased. Never a problem experienced with any of them. The maintain the batteries is my hobby cars which are stored in the winter & prevent their batteries from deteriorating. Before getting the Battery Tender Plus I would usually have to replace the batteries on my hobby cars every two years. After using Battery Tender Plus on my hobby cars which are not driven in the winter, & driven infrequently the rest of the year, batteries always last at least five years, & often much longer.
