The Pilot Super Sport is Michelin's Max Performance Summer tire initially introduced as Original Equipment on several of the world's most sophisticated performance vehicles, including the exclusive, limited-edition Ferrari 599 GTO, Ferrari's fastest road car ever. Developed for drivers who care about how tire technology enhances their vehicle's performance and safety, Pilot Super Sport tires expand the Max Performance Summer tire performance envelope by delivering durability, handling and traction while increasing tread life.

Building on the development of racing tires designed to carry Prototype and GT class cars to endurance race victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, 12 Hours of Sebring and Road Atlanta's Petit Lemans, Pilot Super Sport tires are designed to deliver consistent performance and longevity by blending Max Performance driving characteristics with extended tread wear.

While the importance of tire treadwear in endurance racing may not be immediately apparent, Michelin tires set records during the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2010. One of the 2010 LMP Class leaders completed 46 consecutive laps on one set of tires with an average pace just 1% off of the pole position qualifying time. That's almost 400 racing miles on one set of tires at an average speed of 150 mph.

Additionally the overall winner used just 11 sets of tires to cover a record 3,362 miles, averaging nearly 140 mph and almost 300 racing miles per set of tires. That represented almost a 25% wear improvement compared to just one year earlier where the overall winner needed 14 sets of tires to cover 3,235 miles. By developing longer wearing racing tires without sacrificing performance, Michelin tires allowed the teams to run record race paces while converting some of the time previously spent changing tires in the pits into productive time covering more miles on the track.

While Pilot Super Sport tires are designed to allow sports cars, sporty coupes, performance sedans and supercars to achieve their full potential in dry and wet conditions, like all summer tires they are not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.

The Pilot Super Sport features an asymmetric design molded of Michelin's Bi-Compound tread rubber featuring a Le Mans-inspired dry compound outboard side-by-side with their latest generation of wet compound inboard. The low-void outboard shoulder features a track-type compound to withstand the stresses of high performance cornering while the notched center ribs and inboard shoulder feature a compound designed for superior performance at very high speeds and in wet conditions.

The tire's internal structure features twin steel belts reinforced by spirally wound Twaron cord. Twaron is a polyamide cord that offers a lightweight, high-strength reinforcement above the steel belts to enhance high-speed handling, wear and durability. Michelin FAZ Technology (Filament At Zero degrees) winds the Twaron cord around the tire circumference much the same way fishing line is wound onto fishing reels to allow Michelin engineers to tune tension and strength. The Pilot Super Sport features a polyester casing to promote a comfortable ride and responsive handling.

Pilot Super Sport tires are comparatively light, with weight savings of up to 10% compared to other tires of similar dimensions. This reduces unsprung weight to improve handling.

Limited sizes of the Michelin Pilot Super Sport are available with Michelin Acoustic Technology, which involves the manufacturer adhering a layer of sound-absorbing foam to the inner liner of the tire to reduce cabin noise in the vehicle. These sizes are identified on the Specs page and in the search results

Bridgestone Dueler H/T D684 II Reviews

Feedback demonstrates the Bridgestone Dueler H/T D684 II delivers strong dry traction (scores 8-10) and a comfortable ride (7-10), aligning well with its highway all-season purpose. However, treadwear raises concerns with inconsistent ratings (scores 0-10), including reports of premature wear. Winter traction struggles (scores 0-6), with limited grip in snow and ice, while wet traction shows mixed results (scores 0-8) and occasional hydroplaning risks. Dry performance stands out as a strength, offering reliable handling and stability. While suitable for everyday highway use, drivers needing consistent winter capability or long-lasting tread may find limitations.

...They even handle cornering well when I act like my truck is a bit of a sports car...

These came brand new when I bought my 2015 Tacoma (double cab, long bed). For a highway tire, they are great. I have almost 40k on them and they still have probably another 20-30k of life left. They handle excellent in rain conditions, and find grip even in major downpours (we had a very wet winter!). I never had any slipping or hydroplaning issues. I have not driven them in snow or ice. I occasionally go up dirt trails for work, and these have never had an issue even when it was muddy due to rain. They aren't aggressive trails, but these still did great for an HT tire. They are as quiet and smooth as I would expect from any HT (Highway Tread). Braking performance is still adequate, as I actually had an emergency stop last week and they held strong. They even handle cornering well when I act like my truck is a bit of a sports car. I would absolutely get these again. I want to go AT (All Terrain) with my next tire choice, and I am seriously considering Bridgestone because of how well these have done.

...The dry road handling, highway comfort and noise level are all pretty decent...

These tires were on the truck when we bought it 1.5yrs ago and they were about a quarter worn then. The dry road handling, highway comfort and noise level are all pretty decent. It does fine on dirt/gravel roads too. It's wet traction leaves a lot to be desired! We stop at a road that always has a small stream of water in the gutter, maybe a half inch deep and a 6-8 inches wide, and the tires always spin a bit going across it! The few times it's rained and we have to stop quickly, the ABS goes off sooner than I would expect based on my other 2 cars. We live in the desert so thankfully we don't get too much rain/snow. We haven't really taken it "off-road" so I didn't rate those.

...The highway ride is remarkably quiet and smooth although the steering is not very responsive. The cushy sidewalls provide great cushion over the terrible pavement in Buffalo...

Tires came factory on my 2017 Silverado double cab w/Max Trailer Pack. I read a lot of the negative reviews about this tire from other users on different trucks and I have to say, I did not experience ANY of the negative spots others have stated. This is a dedicated street tire, they haven't left the pavement. However, they did go through a Buffalo winter and I never really noticed how effective they were in the snow until I drove a Ram with Goodyear Wranglers. They never broke loose unprovoked, as long as I drove responsibly, they behaved properly. I drove through a snow storm from Buffalo to Washington DC at highway speed through winding back roads and with zero drama. The highway ride is remarkably quiet and smooth although the steering is not very responsive.

The cushy sidewalls provide great cushion over the terrible pavement in Buffalo. I would not hesitate to buy these tires if I found myself needing replacements.

...Highway & onroad comfort is very acceptable for a 20 tire. Highway noise is very minimal, could be a little better but I'm sure traction would suffer a bit if noise was suppressed...

So bought this vehicle used from a family member so I know these are the original 684 II's that it came with new. This is a full time 4WD vehicle that is driven almost exclusively on city, county & highway. Snow gets cleared off roads pretty good around here so have only driven in light snow. 1"-2" of snow performance is ok, not great but ok. Take into consideration these tires have a little over 40,000 mi on them & are about half the tread is gone. For a full time 4WD SUV with factory 20" wheels , that's pretty good tread life. We go down to Deals Gap area on vacation quite often and I always make it a point to drive " The Dragon" in whatever vehicle I have at the time when we're down there. Two years ago drove this vehicle with these tires. On the dry roads of "The Dragon" , driving quite spiritedly , was very impressed at how well these tires preformed ! Down hill going into sharp turns only squawked tires once or twice. The wife normally has a death grip on the dash and grab handles at this time. Very impressed with handling performance . Highway noise is very minimal, could be a little better but I'm sure traction would suffer a bit if noise was suppressed . Highway & onroad comfort is also very acceptable for a 20" tire.
Also had a 2000 Tundra with the first gen 684's then replaced with the 684 II's at about 60,000 mi so I have a long history liking these tires. Hope Bridgestone continues to manufacture the 684 or a new generation 648 III.

...Wet traction was very poor throughout the life of the tire, especially when turning and braking at the same time. No tire is good on ice, but these tires were especially awful. Virtually no traction in some conditions...

OEM tires.

The Good:

Quiet and smooth riding.

Pretty good in snow, drove in 4wd without issue in up to 8" / 20cm of powder, and up to about 5" / 13cm of heavy wet slush/snow; however in 2wd they will spin quite a bit starting out in wet snow, even with very light throttle.

The Neutral:

They were ok for dry conditions, but dry traction started progressively going away starting at around 45,000 miles. They eventually started squealing around almost every corner, despite speed.

The Bad:

Wet traction was very poor throughout the life of the tire, especially when turning and braking at the same time.

No tire is good on ice, but these tires were especially awful. Virtually no traction in some conditions.

The Verdict:

Cannot recommend these to anyone unless they're always in dry conditions.

I rarely post reviews of anything but feel a duty to warn people away from this tire if it is to be used in wintry conditions. I think it's fair to describe this tire as dangerous in the snow. It is without exaggeration the worst tire in wintry conditions that I have ever experienced, and that includes the summer-specific tires I've had to run a few times under such conditions.

There really doesn't seem to be any aspect of this tire to recommend it -- not price, not performance in any category. But if you got stuck with them OEM, I'd say they are livable so long as it never gets cold in your region and you're not driving aggressively or doing more than light-duty off roading.
