The Potenza RE-71RS is Bridgestone's Extreme Performance Summer tire developed for sports cars, performance sedans and enthusiast drivers who participate in high-performance driving events, track days and endurance-style competition. The Potenza RE-71RS is designed to deliver massive levels of grip and precise handling on the street and maintain that performance at race-pace on the track. Like all Extreme Performance Summer tires, the Potenza RE-71RS is not intended to be serviced, stored or driven in near-and-below-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.
The highly asymmetric pattern is molded from a tread compound that utilizes race-developed, high-grip polymers engineered to maximize dry grip. An optimized footprint helps manage contact pressure under heavy cornering loads for more uniform distribution. This optimization allows the tire to exploit every bit of surface contact available while helping prevent areas of acute heat generation, encouraging even wear in competition environments. The solid circumferential ribs are designed to help ensure quick and precise steering response at the limit in dynamic cornering events. The expansive outboard tread element features low-angle grooves for enhanced lateral stiffness, promoting consistent and predictable cornering traction. Strategically placed, circumferential grooves are beveled to help further support the inboard ribs under intense cornering while allowing sufficient area for hydroplaning resistance.
The internal construction of the Potenza RE71-RS consists of a robust, two-ply polyester casing tuned to increase feedback and steering response. Twin steel belts provide a lightweight and durable base for the tread, and a nylon reinforcement ply is added for high-speed capability.
Note: Potenza RE-71RS tires exposed to temperatures of 20 degrees F (-7 degrees C) or lower must be permitted to gradually return to temperatures of at least 40 degrees F (5 degrees C) for at least 24 hours before they are flexed in any manner, such as by adjusting inflation pressures, mounting them on wheels, or using them to support, roll or drive a vehicle.

Breaking Down Tire Performance Categories - 2024 Special Test With Winter Update (26:05)
We understand that tire performance categories can be confusing. You want an all-season tire, but there are several all-season categories; how do you know which one is right for you? You want a summer tire, but again, which summer category? In this special demonstration, we took six all-season tires from three all-season categories and three summer tires from two summer categories to lay it out for you. Category-leading tires from the Standard Touring All-Season, Grand Touring All-Season, Ultra High Performance All-Season, Max Performance Summer, and Extreme Performance Summer categories are tested so you can see exactly what each "step up" gets you as a driver and what trade-offs were made along the way.
Reviews highlight excellence in dry traction, with customers praising the RE-71RS's exceptional grip, precise steering response, and confidence-inspiring cornering for autocross, HPDE, and track use. Many note strong wet traction in light rain, though some report hydroplaning risks in standing water. Treadwear earns praise for a 200TW tire, with users reporting consistent performance through multiple heat cycles and 6-8 track days when properly managed. While a few mention accelerated wear under aggressive driving or heavy vehicles, most consider durability impressive for the category. The stiff sidewall and predictable limit behavior are frequently cited as strengths, making these a top choice for competitive drivers prioritizing dry performance and track-day longevity.

...It also had good traction in the wet while driving conservatively in a highway with rather poor drainage with standing water...
I drive to autocross events. In the street the tires are not too noisy, great traction in the dry. It also had good traction in the wet while driving conservatively in a highway with rather poor drainage with some standing water. In autocross, these stick amazingly well, even better than the worn out Yokohama A052s that I replaced, with much sharper turn-in feel. Very safe at the limit (and even a bit beyond), and better behaved after getting warm. I really like these tires.

...The times I've driven in the rain on these tires, I've never had trouble with hydroplaning...
I have to *guess* at the number of miles I put on these tires. I used these for track and autocross season (8 or 9 months), then put all-season tires on the car for the other 3 or 4 months of the year. I think I bought my 2nd set of RE-71s in 2019 and they've been through two summers of daily driving, 4 or 5 autocrosses, and at least 2 HPDEs.
The times I've driven in the rain on these tires, I've never had trouble with hydroplaning.
I think a 20-minute lap session in August gets them hot enough to lose a little traction. They're still stable and safe at that point, just not at 100%. It's just a side effect of running a road course with an autocross tire. For 20-minute lap sessions in October they maintained their full traction.
This past weekend, the tires had all the precision I could use, for 3 lap sessions at NCCAR. After that use I think I could get one more track day out of these tires, except that *one* lost pressure due to a bad valve stem. That one didn't quite survive the trip home, so now I'm replacing them as a set.

...Wet driving in the Miata is noticeably better than comparable 200 TW tires...
Best track and day driver tires for my $$. Wet driving in the Miata is noticeably better than comparable 200 TW tires. These will be my choice when ready for the next tire refresh.

Reviewers scoring 9s and 10s praise the RE-71RS for exceptional dry traction, with "sticky" grip and precise cornering ideal for autocross, HPDE, and track days. Many highlight quick warm-up and consistent performance in short sessions, though some note gradual grip loss in prolonged heat. Rapid tread wear aligns with expectations for extreme performance use.

...Dry traction is easier to tell, and it is good! Great for a street tire. For spirited driving on open roads, I highly recommend it.
I've had a good experience with these tires. They are on an old 911 that is now an antique, so I don't thrash it around like I used to anymore (no more track or autocross days, sadly). But I do drive it with spirit on the roads. It's hard to get a great sense of what the tires can do on the street (I don't push legal bounds too much, out of consideration for others), but I have been pretty happy with them. They are much more comfortable than my old Yokohama Advan Neova O8/9s and better in the rain. That said, I rarely drive my car in the rain so I can't say what the limits of the tire are in those conditions. Dry traction is easier to tell, and it is good! Great for a street tire. For spirited driving on open roads, I highly recommend it.

In an autocross, these tires offer excellent grip from first run to last and allow my car to run competitively in SCCA DS class against much more performance-focused competition. I have also chosen to run these tires all summer between autocrosses and have found them to be competent for occasional weekend use, though compromised in ride harshness, noise, and wet grip. I have experienced them in rain a couple times while new and found them to perform well in light rain up to highway speeds. Note that I would not feel comfortable driving with these tires in heavy rain at highway speeds or when worn, so it's helpful to keep an eye on the forecast. Overall, I've been very impressed with these tires and would buy them again to autocross competitively in the future but would look for a more street-focused summer tire for daily driving.

Customers praise the RE-71RS's treadwear, with many scoring 8-10, noting impressive longevity through multiple track days and autocross seasons. Reviews highlight consistent grip even as tread wears, with several users reporting 8-10 track events or 80+ autocross runs. While rapid wear is expected in extreme use, many find it manageable, emphasizing the tire's ability to maintain competitive performance across heat cycles.

...Tread wear is as good as other 200TW tires I have used.
Excellent tires for track/HPDE use. They come up to temp quickly, and maintain performance throughout a 20 minute session. They are predictable, easy to drive. Great traction in the dry. On a wet track (no standing water) they are great, largely because they do come up in temperature even when wet and cold. Tread wear is as good as other 200TW tires I have used.

Simply phenomenal tire compound; very misleading with its supposed '200TW' rating but phenomenal nonetheless...
Simply phenomenal tire compound; very misleading with its supposed "200TW" rating but phenomenal nonetheless.
You name a competing model/brand of tire and I've probably tried them on the track. Nothing and I truly mean NOTHING compares to these tires on an HPDE/AutoX day.
From their almost immediate warmup on out-lap to their predictable limit of adhesion in cornering, the RE71-RS has won me over and I will be purchasing these tires moving forward.
Also, for context, I purchased the heat cycling service with my tires as I use them for competition (I won my series for the 2023 season).
And finally, Gary is a beast and really knows his stuff about different brands, compounds, and fitment.

Extreme Performance Summer - 2024 Test 5 Part 2 (16:42)
EP tires wear two distinct hats. They’re great on sporty and high horsepower vehicles conquering the everyday road and on those same vehicles as they dominate in various races and track days. The nuances here are many as increased traction and performance in one of these arenas can mean a tradeoff elsewhere. This two-part test lays it all bare and reveals just how close, but different, this category can be!
