Tread Callouts

The Grabber APT is General's On-Road All-Terrain tire initially developed for Original Equipment use on the Nissan Titan, with additional sizes for the drivers of pickup trucks, Jeeps, crossovers and sport utility vehicles looking for a balanced blend of off-road capability and on-road civility. Designed to provide confident traction in all weather conditions, most sizes of the Grabber APT meet the tire industry's severe snow service standards and are branded with the three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) symbol.

Utilizing a robust, cut- and chip-resistant tread compound molded into a symmetric pattern, the Grabber APT's ComfortBalance™ Technology places an absorption layer under the tread to isolate the driver from imperfections in the road. Counter-angled shoulder grooves help to dissipate sound generated in the center of the tread for a quiet ride, and the flat tread profile and optimized pattern stiffness help evenly distribute pressure across the face of the tread to combat rapid and irregular wear. Full-depth sipes in the tread blocks create biting edges for grip on slippery surfaces and the staggered circumferential grooves, traction notches and alternating shoulder scoops aid traction on loose surfaces such as dirt or snow.

Internal construction of the Grabber APT features General's DURAGEN construction to aid durability and provide a wide, flat footprint for even wear, braking performance and handling response. The two wide, ultra-high strength steel belts deliver resistance to punctures, in addition to supporting the tread for confident stability under heavy loads.

NOTE: While most of the Grabber APT On-Road All-Terrain tires meet industry severe snow service requirements and are branded with the three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) symbol, some do not. Specific tires/sizes not meeting the industry's requirements are identified with a "Not Rated For Severe Snow" notation on the "Sizes" and "Specs" tabs.

Note: While non-winter tires featuring the three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) symbol may provide additional longitudinal snow traction beyond what all-season (M+S) tires not bearing the symbol can deliver, they do not match the capability of a true winter tire in all adverse weather conditions.

Customers Say

Customer feedback data reveals strong performance in dry traction (scores 8-10) and wet traction (7-10), with many praising confident handling and hydroplaning resistance. Winter traction shows mixed results: snow performance earns 7-10 ratings, but ice traction (scores 2-7) and deep snow (4-10) highlight variability. Comfort receives consistent praise (7-10) for a smooth, quiet ride despite its rugged design. Treadwear scores (7-10) suggest durable construction, though a few note faster wear under heavy off-road use. While excelling as an on-road all-terrain option, some users caution against relying on its ice performance in severe winter conditions.

...These are a huge upgrade from the Bridgestones that slid all over the place in snow and rain... I just came back from a VT ski trip and they held up well in rain, snow, ice and mud; I found i did not need to engage the 4wd once during the trip as the tires really stick to the pavement/ground and the deep channels seem to clear out the snow...

I've driven my 2014 4Runner for about 500 miles on these tires after having to switch out the OEM Bridgestone Duelers at 39,000. I was attracted to these tires for their cross between off road and highway along with their significantly lower price when compared with Goodyear and BFGoodrich. These are a huge upgrade from the Bridgestones that slid all over the place in snow and rain - they were only good for highway. It took a few hundred miles to break the Generals in for highway driving but afterwards my gas mileage is similar to the OEM tires. I just came back from a VT ski trip and they held up well in rain, snow, ice and mud; I found i did not need to engage the 4wd once during the trip as the tires really stick to the pavement/ground and the deep channels seem to clear out the snow. The tires also handle turns well, don't make much noise on the highway and have a cushioned layer that smooths out the bumps. I'm puzzled by the earlier negative reviews - these are good tires and General is owned by Continental.

...They are quiet, good in rainy conditions, good in the dry, and overall did not affect my fuel economy at all negatively...

Purchased this tire under the recommendation of the dealership I bought the truck from. If you live in a place where you plan to use these tires year round - be aware these tires are NOT good in snow regardless of the 3PMS designation comes with. They were very slippery on snowy roads, and unless in 4WD I didn't really trust them.
That being said, they are quiet, good in rainy conditions, good in the dry, and overall did not affect my fuel economy at all negatively. Can recommend this tire to someone who drives in mostly wet or dry conditions, but does not use them for a snow tire.

Spent 18 hours driving through snow storms this last week with no issues what so ever. The Cooper Discoverer tires I had previously were better tires, but only lasted 28,000. The General tires are a much harder compound and ride harder, but did not seem to be lacking in traction in the snow, rain or mud. Time will tell, but if I can get 40,000 + miles out of these tires it will be worth the harsher ride.

...This is my first time owning a set of 3PMS tires and I have to say that it makes a very considerable difference on snow but on sandy/gritty roads. I've never had this much snow traction before...

I was looking for a set of all terrain tires that were 3PMS and didn't weren't over-styled. These are a handsome tire with snow and hauling performance to match. This is my third set of Generals I've bought for my vehicles and all of them have been absolutely great. This is my first time owning a set of 3PMS tires and I have to say that it makes a very considerable difference on not only snow but on sandy/gritty roads. I've never had this much snow traction before. I would hands down buy these again when the time comes.

Great tires. They look great. Aggressive look but not overly aggressive. Ride noise is pretty comparable to the highway grabbers. Didnt notice much of any.
Drive nice. Grip is really good for a more affordable AT tire. If I didn't drive so far everyday I'd keep buying these tires. There definetly a solid pick.

...These Generals are already rated to handle way more than my 5,000 lb. crew cab, aluminum F150 will ever put on them, look great, and have a nice balance of on road manners (great!) and moderate off road capability...

This was the only tire in this size ( 275/70r18, just over 33" tall, close to 40 lbs. per tire) that wasn't a Load Range E. My reasoning for not wanting the higher load range is because those tires are at least 25% heavier which hurts mileage, ride comfort and handling in corners, as well as stopping distance (rotational, unsprung mass has a huge effect on these things). These Generals are already rated to handle way more than my 5,000 lb. crew cab, aluminum F150 will ever put on them, look great, and have a nice balance of on road manners (great!) and moderate off road capability. The only way I'd consider an E tire would be if I was towing something heavy every week or really long distances, in which case I'd get something like a Michelin LTX M/S2 all-season that I could put 80psi in. I'm super glad I found these Generals. They give me a slight ride height boost, still ride as good or better than the stock tires, and look way beefer.

Pleasantly surprised by the ride comfort and lack of road noise. Within the first few days after purchase we had a couple of days of wintery mix weather and the tires performed flawlessly. Gas mileage did noticeably drop but that may even out once the tires have a few more miles on them and will be curious to see if the tires perform as well as they have off-road and in inclement weather once they have more miles on them, say around 20k.

I live on a 1 mile long gravel driveway off of a 2 mile long gravel road and the conditions very greatly depending on the weather. These tires transformed the Tahoe's ride quality on these rides so significantly that I recommend them to everyone I know who has a truck. The paved roads are very windy and could be a challenge for most tires but these tires courier and drive as good as any other I've had. On the highway they are quiet and very comfortable. They are the best all around tire for an SUV, especially if like me you actually go off road through muddy fields as I do around my farm almost daily and want the confidence that you will not get stuck.

...They currently measure around 7/32" and good even wear. I rotate at oil change time. It's too early to replace them...

These tires came on the F-150 OEM from Ford. I have just over 42,000 miles on them. They currently measure around 7/32” and good even wear. I rotate at oil change time. It’s too early to replace them. The replacement General Grabber APT tires I just purchased on sale from Tirerack are being stored until this Fall/early Winter when the existing tires should be ready go. I’m 90% on road and the balance gravel BLM or Forest Service roads in Oregon and Nevada. No rock crawler. I tow a 7,000 lb. travel trailer 1-2 months out of the year. Maybe 20,000 miles on these tires while towing. I recently had to tow 10 miles in 3-4” of mud on a flat BLM road with a firm road base below and never used 4-Wheel drive while towing. The APT’s had enough “bite” to get me through. I run the tires at 50 psi. They are very stable tires, for LR-C, no side-to-side swaying. They track even better when heavily loaded towing, surprisingly. I do feel a bit of an on-center “dead spot” in the steering as noted in the Tirerack reviews, when traveling on highway not towing but it disapears when loaded. Not a problem for me. This my first experience with a 4X4 pickup towing with On-Highway All Terrain tires. My previous trucks were 2WD with Highway tires. I have been impressed!
