The Solus KH16 (so'lus) is KUMHO's Grand Touring All-Season offering developed for the drivers of sporty coupes and sedans. Solus KH16 tires were designed to offer a harmonious balance of noise comfort, ride comfort and handling performance, along with dry, wet and year-round traction, even in light snow.

The Solus KH16 is refined through the use of KUMHO's ESCOT Technology that optimizes the tire's shape, internal tension and footprint contact pressure. On the outside, the Solus KH16 tires feature an all-season tread compound molded into a symmetric tread design that features full-depth circumferential and multiple lateral grooves to enhance traction in rain and light snow. On the inside, twin steel belts are reinforced by nylon belt edge strips to provide high speed stability and durability, while polyester body plies provide casing strength and a smooth ride.

*Specific sizes featuring Low Rolling Resistance technology are identified as such on the Sizes tab, as well as on the tire's Specs tab.

Tire Rack Test Results Kumho Solus KH16

May 13, 2005

Tires Tested

Firestone Affinity LH30 Premium (Passenger All-Season, 205/55R16) Goodyear Eagle RS-A (High Performance All-Season, Original Equipment Comparison, 205/50R17) Kumho Solus KH16 (Grand Touring All-Season, 205/55R16) Yokohama AVID TRZ (Standard Touring All-Season, 205/55R16)

Vehicles Used

2003 BMW 330Ci Coupe

The traditional characteristics used to determine if a tire belongs in the Passenger or Touring All-Season categories are blurring as newer products in these two groups take technology and styling cues from more advanced products in the manufacturer’s offering. Higher speed ratings, refined tread designs and sidewall styling normally reserved for Grand Touring or Performance tires are making their way into tires aimed at the more traditional Passenger and Standard Touring All-Season categories.

Yokohama’s AVID TRZ Standard Touring All-Season tire with its unique "Three-Ride Zone" asymmetric tread pattern and silica tread compound takes advantage of some of the latest tire design and molding techniques, intended to advance this tire’s traction and handling capabilities while maintaining the level of ride quality, tread life and price point appropriate for Standard Touring All-Season tires. To find out how well this blend improves the breed Tire Rack team conducted a Real World Road Ride and Performance Track Drive to compare the AVID TRZ with the Firestone Affinity LH30 (Premium Passenger All-Season) and Kumho Solus KH16 (Grand Touring All-Season). The Affinity LH30 features a long-wearing tread design with an unusual H-speed rating, while the value-priced Solus KH16 is tuned to offer a blend of comfort and performance.

Our evaluation used 2003 BMW 330Ci coupes, with new, full tread depth 205/55R16 tires mounted on 16x7.5" wheels. We also included a fourth 2003 BMW 330Ci fitted with the Original Equipment (OE) 205/50R17 Goodyear Eagle RS-A High Performance All-Season tires mounted on factory 17x7.0" wheels. We have included this vehicle/tire combination in other tire evaluations, and have found it helpful to have an OE-equipped vehicle in the test to evaluate the impact of installing the other products.

What We Learned on the Road

Our 5.6-mile loop of expressway, state highway and county roads provides a great variety of road conditions that include city and highway speeds, smooth and coarse concrete, as well as new and patched asphalt. This route allows our team to experience noise comfort, ride quality and everyday handling, just as you would during your drive to school or work.

Once again, we proved that the Goodyear Eagle RS-A tire that is fitted as Original Equipment on our BMW 330Ci test cars is a well-tuned product for this vehicle. But we also found that the other three products used in this evaluation were able to exceed the capability of the OE Goodyear in at least one area each, reinforcing the idea that replacement tires can specialize in specific capabilities, while most OE tires may be required to blend all areas.

The Yokohama AVID TRZ was praised for its ride comfort during the road evaluation. This tire seemed to keep the harshness of sharp expansion joints at a distance, softening their blow through the steering wheel or into the driver’s seat. The Goodyear Eagle RS-A scored close behind, while the Kumho Solus KH16 and Firestone Affinity LH30 tires both rode a bit more firmly than the others.

While all four tires in this test offered comfortable (relatively low) levels of tread pattern noise over the variety of surfaces and speeds of our test route, the Affinity LH30 seemed to have a slight advantage over the other three tires. The Affinity LH30 generated a very general, "white" noise that quickly falls into the background. The noise level of the other three tires in the test were not objectionable, but each had several specific pitches that became more noticeable at different speeds.

The Kumho Solus KH16 (and the tire it replaces, the Ecsta HP4 716) drives as if it is tuned towards the sportier side of the Grand Touring category. Just as with its predecessor, the handling of the Solus KH16 felt well-connected around the curving off-ramps and responsive during light-duty cornering around the 90 degree turns of our road ride route. The OE Goodyear Eagle RS-A also felt responsive, but was rated just behind the Kumho by our team. The Yokohama AVID TRZ slotted in a close third, while the Affinity LH30 felt a bit less responsive than the other three tires.

What We Learned on the Test Track

Our 1/3-mile per lap test track course includes 90-degree street corners, lane changes and simulated expressway ramps. Run in both dry and wet conditions, the test track allows our team to experience the traction, responsiveness, handling and drivability normally only encountered during abrupt emergency avoidance maneuvers or competition events.

Admittedly, the group of products in this evaluation is not aimed at the driver who wants to participate in the weekend autocross or track-day event, but rather someone who is looking for a comfortable ride with appropriate levels of traction and handling for what comes along during their day-to-day commute.

The Kumho Solus KH16, which felt a bit firm over the bumps on our ride evaluation, rewarded drivers by offering the most overall grip and responsiveness on our dry handling track. Coming as an unexpected surprise the Yokohama AVID TRZ, which was the most comfortable on the road, was able to post lap times right behind the Kumho. While steering response was not quite as crisp as the Kumho or Goodyear tires, the overall stability and grip level of the AVID TRZ made it easy to control.

With our sprinkler system wetting the track, the BMW’s OE Goodyear Eagle RS-A showed it offers respectable wet weather traction, posting the fastest average lap time of the test. Traction was predictable and controllable, with some gentle understeer when driven at the limit of grip. Again the Yokohama AVID TRZ did a good job hanging on to the wet surface, feeling easy to control in the hard braking and cornering areas of our track. The Kumho Solus KH16 and Firestone Affinity LH30 felt as though they did not have as much sheer wet grip as the Goodyear or Yokohama tires, which was also reflected in their slower average lap times and longer measured stopping distances.

Customers Say

Ratings data demonstrates the Kumho Solus KH16 delivers strong comfort (scores 7-10) with a smooth, quiet ride and impressive treadwear (scores 8-10) for long-lasting performance. Wet and dry traction earn consistent praise for responsive handling and grip. However, winter traction receives mixed feedback, with some customers noting reduced confidence in snowy or icy conditions despite its all-season designation. While most users report satisfaction for year-round driving in moderate climates, those frequently facing severe winter weather may want to consider its limitations in deeper snow and ice.

These have been very good tires on both my car and minivan and I would definitely recommend them. Dry and wet traction were excellent with no apparent degradation as the tires wore. They never squealed on turns or hydroplaned at highway speeds. Noise levels were always low. On the negative side, the Vibe is not a powerful car, but with the stick shift there was an unintentional tendency to spin the tires on right turns from a stop. I drove on these through two winters and there was a very noticeable drop off in snow traction after 20-25,000 miles, as in white knuckle time, but this should come as no surprise. I have the Winterforce tires on the van during winter and will invest in them for the car. Four years ago, the Ecsta HP716's at $60 a tire were a raging bargain. Now at $80, both the Ecsta and Solus (noticed no difference between them) remain a good value, but no longer a no-brainer. I was seduced by the Bridgestone special for replacements. So far I'm very impressed with the RE960 Pole Position at about $95 a tire with the rebate factored in.

I don't have allot of experience with this tire but, my first impression is very positive. These tires have amazing lateral stability, corner is very sure-footed with no surprises at all. The wet weather traction and resistance to hydro-planning is excellent. Even through deep puddles I haven't detected any skating at all. I have only a couple of snowy days on these tires but, the snow traction seems also excellent. I can't imagine a tire that does it all but so far this tire seems to excel in many areas. I will definitely try these out as a replacement tire.

This is a awesome tire. I was a little skeptical when I ordered these tires to replace OEM Michelin MXV4's...but what a suprise. These tires have great dry/wet traction and are very quiet on the highway. My car handles and rides just as it did with the Michelin MXV4's. I have not driven in snow/ice, but will leave more feedback when that happens. Great tire and a great price compared to the Michelin MXV4's

...These Kumhos performed pretty well on dry pavement, remained silent when pushed hard, and the ride was decent...

A little over 41K miles on these tires and it's time to replace them. I do not wear my tires down to the 2/32" treadbars, because it simply would not make any sense from a safety standpoint on wet roads. They have about 3 to 4/32" left. As for winter, I have dedicated snow tires. These Kumhos performed pretty well on dry pavement, remained silent when pushed hard, and the ride was decent. I don't recall how they were on the wet when new or close to new, but of course, they are not very safe now that most of the tread depth is gone. As for an all-season tire with the M+S logo, well, I would stay away from these if you're gonna expect any kind of wintery conditions. They were never good for that. Just purchased the Sumitomo HTR A/S P01 as a replacement. Will see...

...These tires handle excellently through turns and have a great grip... I've had them on the track (road racing track)... and perfectly dry roads...

I've put at least 10,000 miles on my set of Kumho Solus KH-16's and couldn't be happier. The suspension on my car is custom, tighter than stock, with swya bars and strut braces. These tires handle excellently through turns and have a great grip even in the snow. I had them for around a year and a half, and they have been excellent, I've had them on the track (road racing track), in the snow, ice, rain, blizzards, middle of the summer heat, and perfectly dry roads. I've beaten these tires good and they've taken everything. I just recently tore a hole in the side of one from something in a massive pot hole that even dented my rim, and I'm looking forward to a new set. Great buy for a great price!

I think they are quiet and they give a smooth ride... I might purchase a better tire this time but I would definitely recommend the Solus KH-16 as a quite, soft riding, long lasting tire.

I think the tires are great. I have put about 60,000 miles on them over the past 4 years and they still have a good tread, but probably not enough to drive in snow this winter. I think they are quiet and they give a smooth ride. After reading other people reviews on tires, I think some people push their cars to the limit hence accelerate tire wear with their style of driving. I might purchase a better tire this time but I would definitely recommend the Solus KH-16 as a quite, soft riding, long lasting tire.

...very quiet and with good ride...

These tires turned out to be a great deal. Low price ($50.00 a piece on sale), very quiet and with a good ride. WET road handling and HYDRO PLANE resistance are top notch---oh, not from a Khumo tire right??!!--wrong, try them for your self and you will see what I'm talking about. I would recommend "V" rating if they make them, probably more money but worth the stiffer sidewall for improved DRY handling. I purchased "S" rated simply because they were the cheapest and on sale for the 15 inch wheels I have. I have the alignment checked and adjusted every year, so my tires last a long time. I also rotate tires every 5,000 miles and balance yearly. These tires are wearing evenly, keep in mind I do tip in heavily on acceleration with a front wheel drive vehicle. So far, I have noticed similar wear patterns and tread depth to previous set of $550.00 Michelins.

...20k miles and showing very little, if any wear. Rotate every 5k, 33psi all around...

Very pleased with this tire. Great allround tire for every driving condition one would encounter of pavement. Very quiet ride depending on pavement type. Handling on dry or wet pavement and resistance to hydroplaning is very good. Just got finished with a trip and got over 37 mgp on the highway. 20k miles and showing very little, if any wear. Rotate every 5k, 33psi all around. I'll definitely buy another set if these ever wear out. Far exceeded my expectations. Can't be beat for the price.

...After 18 mos. and about 20k miles, my tread is still at 7/16. These feel soft enough to be responsive, but they don't wear as fast as high performance tires...

I've had these tires for over 18 mos. as a replacement to my OEM Firestone that came on my CRV. They have FAR exceeded my expectations. After 18 mos. and about 20k miles, my tread is still at 7/16. These feel soft enough to be responsive, but they don't wear as fast as high performance tires. Also, I'm VERY glad to say they didn't warp ("Cup") like my OEM Firestones did. Very, very happy with them and was just checking in to make sure they were still available. I have plenty of treat, but may put on a new set before winter (it is now May) as I'm a bit chicken and often get stuck being the driver during wet, wintry, blizzard-like conditions and I don't like taking risks, the older I get. Awesome tires. Just came back from a 1700 mile roundtrip vacation, and they were awesome.. enduring about 720 miles one way. The CRV overall is a great vehicle.. these Kumho Solus made it a complete package. Never ever bother with Firestone... can't remember the crappy cupped tires that came on it, but they were deafening. The Solus' have worn nicely, softly, grip well, and are quiet! Buy with confidence.

I have not driven much on these tires as they are on a rental car that I have now. However, I was so disappointed with their snow traction that I thought I should write a review anyhow. When I couldn't get out of my lightly snow covered driveway, I should have taken it as a sign to stay home. However, I managed to get up the slight grade with the help of a full bag of sand. Once I was on the road, again lightly snow covered, and began to slowly apply the gas the tires would spin before finally moving the car. I just didn't feel as if the car was very stable driving down a straight and level road! I could feel the car start to slide a bit around bents when at less then the speed limit. Then at the end of my street I slid to a stop at the stop sign. That was my queue to forget it and go back home. We were going to get a few inches of snow during the course of the day and I knew I'd never make it back. I barely made it up the hill back to the house as it was. Anyhow, my point is if you foresee having to drive in any winter weather conditions, DO NOT buy these tires! I'm a cautious driver and I didn't feel safe at all with them in a dusting of snow and give it a few inches, I'd don't think I'd have made it anywhere but into a snowbank! I will say that they were quiet and seemed fine before it snowed, but what tire isn't "OK" on dry pavement?

...They are now to the point that I fishtail in 1 inch of freshly fallen snow causing my traction control to activate! The dealer states that Kumho will do nothing because they still had substantial amount of tread left - they measured 4/32 today...

These tires came as an "upgrade" on my new 2013 Dodge Journey when I purchased it. I don't drive a lot. I take my kids where they need to go- school, doctor's appointments, soccer games and practices, etc. My husband has driven my Journey as needed when his car was unavailable, so my mileage after only 2 years and a half is barely pushing 23,000 miles. I ensure proper maintenance on the Journey and the tires including inflation, balance, and rotation. I was extremely upset when my tires started losing their grip and "spinning" on steep inclines when taking off about 2 months ago (roughly 19k miles 5/32). They are now to the point that I fishtail in 1 inch of freshly fallen snow causing my traction control to activate! The dealer states that Kumho will do nothing because they still had a substantial amount of tread left - they measured 4/32 today. I was told basically to forget the 60,000 mile tread wear warranty- if i'm spinning on dry inclines and fishtailing in minimal snowfall it's too dangerous to drive at this point! Additionally the road noise from these tires made the bluetooth feature in my car "fun" to use- because you know: yelling and turning your car radio up to hear the person you're talking to is what everyone loves to do!
