The Defender LTX M/S is Michelin's Highway All-Season tire developed to combine long tread life with all-season capabilities for vans, pickups and sport utility vehicles, as well as for commercial vans, shuttles and chassis cab vehicles using heavy-duty, light-truck sizes. The Defender LTX M/S is designed to combine a smooth, quiet ride with year-round traction in dry, wet and wintry conditions, even in light snow.

Compared to the popular Michelin LTX M/S2 it replaces, the new Defender LTX M/S tires share the same highly functional tread pattern, and offer improvements in wear life/longevity to better meet the high-torque demands of modern trucks. Defender LTX M/S is designed to be stronger, longer.

Evertread Technology

Defender LTX M/S tires feature Michelin Evertread compound, which is a stronger advanced compound that holds up to tougher conditions longer. This compound is molded into a symmetric tread design of stable independent tread blocks featuring high-density 3-D Active Sipes to deliver all-season traction on dry roads and in inclement weather. Four wide circumferential channels, multiple lateral grooves and open shoulder slots promote lateral water evacuation to enhance wet traction and stopping performance. The tire's profile features Michelin's MaxTouch Construction to produce a contact patch that promotes reliable traction and long wear by evenly distributing acceleration, braking and cornering forces.

The tire's internal structure includes twin steel belts to provide the strength and durability needed to handle heavy loads.

NOTE: The Defender LTX M/S Highway All-Season tire is NOT a dedicated winter / snow tire. It does NOT meet the severe snow traction requirements and is NOT branded with the three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) symbol.

*Specific sizes utilizing Michelin Total Performance eco-focused manufacturing methods are identified as such on the Sizes tab, as well as on the tire's Specs tab.

Vehicles Used

2022 Ford Explorer ST

Few tire lines are as iconic as Michelin's LTX Highway All-Season tire which has amassed a loyal following, satisfying generation after generation of product release. The latest in the brand's lineage has recently debuted and follows the expected naming convention as the second iteration of the Defender Highway All-Season line, aptly named, the Defender LTX M/S2.

With big shoes to fill and little margin for error, our team was excited to finally get some seat time with what would most likely be another celebrated step for the brand and category. Like what many longtime customers may experience, our team compared the new version to its predecessor: the Defender LTX M/S. Our evaluation used 2022 Ford Explorer ST test vehicles fitted with new, full tread depth 265/60R18 tires mounted on 18x8.0 wheels.

On the Road

Our standard road ride route let our team experience both tires back-to-back in identical situations. With the route's mix of road types and speeds, our drivers were able to distinguish differences from two very similar performances. The ride from each was undoubtedly good, with the Defender LTX M/S2 feeling slightly tauter over impacts, but with an improvement in communication with the road. The new tire's increase in control and minimal penalty on ride comfort should sync up well with modern vehicles and felt right at home on our sporty SUV test platform. Noise comfort was very close between the two as well, with the new tire minimizing more harmonics on smooth pavement, but the previous iteration blending tones a little better on coarse surfaces. While apparent to our test drivers in a controlled back-to-back testing environment, they noted that the differences were slight. Steering around corners and along highway ramps highlighted a solid improvement in the new Defender LTX M/S2, with slightly better response and weight that helped it feel more precise and direct in turns.

On the Track

Around the wet track, the new Defender LTX M/S2 demonstrated some improvements that compounded to showcase stronger combined dynamic handling. An incremental, one hundredth of a g step up in lateral traction and a slight four-foot advantage in braking distance from fifty miles per hour may not sound like much but helped accentuate the improved traction and handling from the new tire. The sharper, more accurate steering helped our team make quick directional changes through the slalom with ease. In addition, the more capable feel at the limit created a track experience that was simply less dramatic, which is precisely what pays dividends on the public streets when emergency maneuvers become necessity.

Michelin Defender LTX M/S5.6933.860.68114.5
Michelin Defender LTX M/S25.5833.370.69110.5

Once the track dried off, the Defender LTX M/S2 delivered a larger lead in lateral traction figures with braking essentially matched between the two tires. Like in the wet, the new Defender LTX M/S2 just felt more put together when hustled through corners. While dry limit handling is not the objective of Highway All-Season tires, this advantage on track was also felt on the road with less aggressive inputs. With no, or limited penalty for the increased dynamic performance, our drivers welcomed the additional handling feel and control from the new tire.

Driving in Winter Conditions

With the predecessor's good customer ratings in winter traction and particularly good light snow traction reviews, wintry weather performance was no doubt a metric that designers worked hard to maintain in the Defender LTX M/S2. Our team was excited to test them head-to-head and see if any significant changes were made in the snow or on the ice. In the snow, each tire made the dash from zero to twelve miles per hour within a half-foot of each other, with the Defender LTX M/S2 just barely edging out its elder. Braking distances from twenty five miles per hour were again very similar, with the two essentially right on top of each other, separated by just over a foot difference. Under light handling maneuvers in the snow, our team thought both had sharp turn-ins with a short delay in the actual change in trajectory. One difference they did note however was the rear end’s reaction after the turn was initiated. The Defender LTX M/S allowed more oversteer but was easy to recover without overshooting the intended path. The Defender LTX M/S2 delivered higher levels of lateral grip and would simply turn, without any of the additional rear end movement. Both were capable and balanced, but the subjective increase in lateral stability was a notable improvement with the Defender LTX M/S2. Braking on the ice from twelve miles per hour was separated by about a foot, with the original Defender LTX M/S just besting its replacement.

Conclusion

As expected, this latest generation of Highway All-Season tire from Michelin checked all the right boxes and balanced what were probably careful compromises from its development team. It's hard to argue they haven't found the right formula to satisfy drivers. This latest model seems to have improved traction, but most notably handling dynamics and steering feel fit for the next generation of SUVs and light trucks. As for the LTX loyalist, it seems they will be pleasantly satisfied that the latest iteration of their beloved tire line has retained its successful formula along with an incremental improvement in traction and a nice evolution in handling. As for new customers, they can take comfort knowing they'll be getting the latest and greatest Highway All-Season performance Michelin has to offer.

Customers Say

Owners report excellent dry traction and confident wet performance, with many highlighting responsive handling and a comfortable ride. Scores in the 9-10 range dominate for dry and wet conditions, aligning with the tire's summer-focused design. Comfort receives consistent praise for smoothness and low noise. However, treadwear shows mixed results-some note rapid wear, particularly with aggressive driving, though others report satisfactory longevity when used as intended. Overall, the Pilot Sport 4S excels in its performance categories, with most concerns centered on tread life rather than dynamic capabilities.

I bought these tires for a wet track day. I also had these tires on my 2020 M2 Comp on a wet track day. These tires performed better than expected the 1st time I had a wet track day in my M2. So when I had a wet track day in my 2022 GT4 there was no question what tires I needed to use for that day. The track had puddles, small streams running across the track and damp spots. There were moments of down pour rain, steady drizzle and sun all in the same session and the PS4S performed consistently and I felt confedient carring speed on the straight away and corners with these tires. I would recomend these for wet driving conditions on track.

...They have impeccable wet and dry traction, even in torrential downpours we often get here in FL...

These tires have been great thus far. They have impeccable wet and dry traction, even in our torrential downpours we often get here in FL. Steering response in very positive and tight, and when they've been pushed to their limit they break away easily and predictably which is surprisingly hard to get them to do even in this big SUV. Warm-up time is quick and they're performing great long before the engine oil is up to temp and the vehicle is ready for fun.
Tread wear so far is a little better than what I expected. At about 6k miles they are showing little overall wear despite handling 650hp/700ftlbs in a 4500lb SUV that is driven very spirited through corners often. They seem quiet on the highway, but it's hard to tell as my 958 has the extra NVH package so its basically silent inside no matter what. Sidewalls seem stiff and perky as you'd want from a tire like this, and ride quality is stiff and composed but not overly harsh compared to whatever trash tires were on this when I bought it.

Overall these are amazing tires for a spirited street driver like myself that might see occasional track time. The 20k mileage warranty on a performance tire this size is also an amazing and unusual bonus. I'll definitely be putting these back on when replacement time comes.

...Dry traction is one of the best for daily driving and wanting to get into some fun!...

One of the best tires I've ever put on my WRX! Corner grip and handling is predicable and precise. Wet traction has never missed a beat even till 4/32" tread. Dry traction is one of the best for daily driving and wanting to get into some fun! Comfort is pretty good for this category and noise is quite quiet for this type of tire. As the tire aged you do start to notice some tire noise but it's really faint. Michelin makes a really good product. I will consider this as the king of Max Perf. Summer tires.

...Vast improvement over OEM tires; grip, responsiveness to steering input, braking distance much reduced... Much more capable and predictable at the limit, better feel/feedback through steering wheel. Able to carry more speed on entry, mid-corner, and apply throttle sooner on exit...

Excellent tires which permit somewhat more than „spirited“ for daily driving. Vast improvement over OEM tires; grip, responsiveness to steering input, braking distance much reduced. Went to 18“ for better ride compliance. Much more capable and predictable at the limit, better feel/feedback through steering wheel. Able to carry more speed on entry, mid-corner, and apply throttle sooner on exit. Ride on mixed surfaces is excellent; road noise not an issue for me. True heavy wet weather performance remains unknown. However, limited opportunities to drive in moderately wet conditions demonstrates excellent traction that exceeds that of OEM; inspires far more confidence when pushing hard on slick/sketchy pavement.

Overall, very pleased with this set of tires for this vehicle.

Dry Traction is Insane. They feel very planted and take demanding curves with ease. Wet traction is very good and they maintain good contact with the road in heavy rain. Not so great in the light snow but they are Summer Tires! Be sure to have a winter set of tires if you live in a region that gets snow and save these tires for fun times when it's warm out. :)

...These are incredible in any category: dry-grip: insane • wet grip: insane • highway noise: very quiet • turn-in: instant • cornering grip: more than my 50+ year old body is willing to test • comfort: smooth as other tires...

The N0 Porsche rating is not a joke...

In early 2020 tried a set of PS4S that were not available in the N0 rating and ended up returning them for a set of Pilot SuperSports. These "non N0" rated tires made my 911 feel like a mini-van and were terrible - they didn't even feel safe. Obviously I was very apprehensive ordering PS4S's this time around, but since they are now N0 rated, and the fact that Pilot SuperSports are no longer offered, I took the chance and ordered them.

These are incredible in any category: dry-grip: insane • wet grip: insane • highway noise: very quiet • turn-in: instant • cornering grip: more than my 50+ year old body is willing to test • comfort: I can drive with the suspension set Sport and it's as smooth as other tires when set to normal stiffness.

I can't say anything about wear yet; but I suspect these will wear similar to the Pilot SuperSports; where they are great until about 12k miles and then start to fall off.

Summary: buy these, you'll love them!

...Tread-wear has been normal. For 30K mile tires, I'm about 1/2 way there for tread wear...

From all the tires I've bought in the past Forty years, these tires by far out-shined them all. Even during under-steering, there's still under control. Ride comfort is awesome. Noise level is very low compare to my previous, Continental Pro Contacts , Michelin Pilot All Season or Michelin A/S 3+. During heavy rain, I can slice through the water at a comfortable speed of 75MPH. Tread-wear has been normal. For 30K mile tires, I'm abut 1/2 way there for tread wear. Hope this helps.
