The Pilot Super Sport is Michelin's Max Performance Summer tire initially introduced as Original Equipment on several of the world's most sophisticated performance vehicles, including the exclusive, limited-edition Ferrari 599 GTO, Ferrari's fastest road car ever. Developed for drivers who care about how tire technology enhances their vehicle's performance and safety, Pilot Super Sport tires expand the Max Performance Summer tire performance envelope by delivering durability, handling and traction while increasing tread life.

Building on the development of racing tires designed to carry Prototype and GT class cars to endurance race victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, 12 Hours of Sebring and Road Atlanta's Petit Lemans, Pilot Super Sport tires are designed to deliver consistent performance and longevity by blending Max Performance driving characteristics with extended tread wear.

While the importance of tire treadwear in endurance racing may not be immediately apparent, Michelin tires set records during the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2010. One of the 2010 LMP Class leaders completed 46 consecutive laps on one set of tires with an average pace just 1% off of the pole position qualifying time. That's almost 400 racing miles on one set of tires at an average speed of 150 mph.

Additionally the overall winner used just 11 sets of tires to cover a record 3,362 miles, averaging nearly 140 mph and almost 300 racing miles per set of tires. That represented almost a 25% wear improvement compared to just one year earlier where the overall winner needed 14 sets of tires to cover 3,235 miles. By developing longer wearing racing tires without sacrificing performance, Michelin tires allowed the teams to run record race paces while converting some of the time previously spent changing tires in the pits into productive time covering more miles on the track.

While Pilot Super Sport tires are designed to allow sports cars, sporty coupes, performance sedans and supercars to achieve their full potential in dry and wet conditions, like all summer tires they are not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.

The Pilot Super Sport features an asymmetric design molded of Michelin's Bi-Compound tread rubber featuring a Le Mans-inspired dry compound outboard side-by-side with their latest generation of wet compound inboard. The low-void outboard shoulder features a track-type compound to withstand the stresses of high performance cornering while the notched center ribs and inboard shoulder feature a compound designed for superior performance at very high speeds and in wet conditions.

The tire's internal structure features twin steel belts reinforced by spirally wound Twaron cord. Twaron is a polyamide cord that offers a lightweight, high-strength reinforcement above the steel belts to enhance high-speed handling, wear and durability. Michelin FAZ Technology (Filament At Zero degrees) winds the Twaron cord around the tire circumference much the same way fishing line is wound onto fishing reels to allow Michelin engineers to tune tension and strength. The Pilot Super Sport features a polyester casing to promote a comfortable ride and responsive handling.

Pilot Super Sport tires are comparatively light, with weight savings of up to 10% compared to other tires of similar dimensions. This reduces unsprung weight to improve handling.

Limited sizes of the Michelin Pilot Super Sport are available with Michelin Acoustic Technology, which involves the manufacturer adhering a layer of sound-absorbing foam to the inner liner of the tire to reduce cabin noise in the vehicle. These sizes are identified on the Specs page and in the search results

Customers Say

Customers think the Michelin Pilot Super Sport delivers outstanding dry traction and precise steering response, with nearly all scores in the 9-10 range for grip and cornering stability. Wet traction also earns excellent marks, with most users praising confident handling in rain despite occasional mentions of hydroplaning in heavy water. Ride comfort receives high praise for a max performance summer tire, though a few note slightly firmer feedback. Treadwear ratings are mostly positive (7-10) with many users satisfied for a summer tire, though some report faster wear than expected-a common tradeoff for ultra-high-performance models.

...Much improved cornering, wet traction, steering response, and hydroplaning resistance...

Definitely improved the handling greatly over the stock RF's. Much improved cornering , wet traction, steering response, and hydroplaning resistance. I should do some suspension mods to bring out more of the capabilites of this tire - stiffer steering rod bushings ,rear antiroll bar, and springs/struts. Great service and knowledge by the Tire Rack people.

...Wet pavement traction is good. Noticed a little hydroplaning in a major down pour the other day. Still very acceptable with staggered set up...

Purchased these tires to replace the original Bridgestone RE050A run flats. Night and day difference in tire noise and ride confort. Michelins are quite and smooth. Tire noise is minimal, ride comfort is very smooth, dry pavement grip is amazing. Wet pavement traction is good. Noticed a little hydroplaning in a major down pour the other day. Still very acceptable with staggered set up. (it was raining heavy.) I have roughly 1000 miles on tires, can't really rate tire wear yet.

Overall very happy with tires, only concern will be tire wear at this point.

...They provide excellent traction in wet and dry...

These are the best tires I've ever purchased. They provide excellent traction in wet and dry. They're quiet, which is very important to me as drive on the highway a lot. At about 5k miles, they are showing very little wear. They even look good on the car. Highly recommend this tire!

...Very impressed with stability, steering input response and overall dry traction...

Michelin Pilot Super Sports on a Audi A3. Just a really brilliant tire. Very impressed with stability, steering input response and overall dry traction. In the wet the Michelin PSS is also passing my tests with flying colors. These tires replaced a set of all season Falken's. While the Ziex 912's are no slouch, they are easily outperformed by the PSS. It is no contest. If you want a summer tire for maximum performance, look no further than the Michelin Pilot Super Sports. You will not be disappointed.

I wasn't sure if I should stick with the more expensive Sports or try the Super Sports. Glad I chose these, turn-in is much improved, understeer is all but gone now, the car provides much more confidence entering a corner. I do drive in a spirited manner, these tires are providing many smiles per gallon. I'll be putting these on the rears next

...The comfort is second to none and so, so quiet for summer performance tires...

This is my second set of Michelin Pilot Super Sports and they are worth every dollar. My first set lasted for about 12,000 miles but had premature wear as I discovered I needed to replace the front tie rod bushings. This set is wearing evenly. This tires make the S8 handle like it is on rails. The comfort is second to none and so, so quiet for summer performance tires. I have never been happier with a set of tires. Buy them you will love them.

I just got these tires about a week ago and the first time I drove my car with these tires, I immediately noticed how quiet and comfy they are (compared to the General Exclaim UHPs I had) I can actually hear wind noise now haha!

Then I took them to the autocross in the rain, and MY GOODNESS are they grippy - granted it was soaking wet - but that's what impressed me even more! I am yet to use them in a dry autocross event, but so far, it's looking promising.

I really can't comment too much on dry grip just yet but I've done some spirited driving on a mountain road, and I immediately felt a superb amount of stability and it definitely feels like i could push the car much much more.

Two thumbs up Michelin, I am thoroughly impressed. Please keep up the good work!

The best sport tire you can find. Almost the same grip as the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup but with amazing performance on wet and especially on resistance to hydroplaning. This is by far the best tire I've put on my car and I am very demanding. Amazing on dry and wet surfaces, even the treadwear is the best of all tires I've installed on my car!

I am coming from a BMW 335i with Continentals (RFTs) to an M3 with Michelin PSSs. Very impressed with the dry and wet traction as well as the tread wear so far (5K miles). This is by far the best tire I have driven on in a performance vehicle. Very happy with BMW's choice and I will most likely be replacing them with the same when this set wears out. Overall excellent tire for around town and on the highway (I have several 500+ mile trips on them).
