The Discoverer AT34S is Cooper's On-Road All-Terrain tire designed for the drivers of pickup trucks, crossovers and full-size SUVs looking for a tire that blends the off-road grip they need with the on-road comfort they demand. Engineered to deliver traction on any surface it may encounter, the Discoverer AT34S combines on-road manners with off-road capability and provides confident light snow traction that meets the tire industry's severe snow service rating requirements and earns the three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) symbol.

Utilizing Adaptive-Traction Technology, the Discoverer AT34S combines a silica-based tread compound into the Secure-Grip all-terrain pattern. The open, five-rib design is engineered to provide wet and dry performance, in addition to off-road capability. The circumferential, Aqua Vac Channels and wide, lateral notches help evacuate water from the contact patch and resist hydroplaning. Micro-Gauge ZigZag sipes create biting edges for added traction in slippery conditions while retaining tread block stability for dry traction and handling. Snow Groove Technology utilizes saw-tooth block edges in the outboard grooves to retain snow in the tread pattern for snow-on-snow traction.

The internal construction of the Discoverer AT34Sconsists of a durable, two-ply polyester casing. A single-ply, nylon reinforcement above two high-strength steel belts further increases durability and handling response, along with providing high-speed stability.

Note: While non-winter tires featuring the three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) symbol may provide additional longitudinal snow traction beyond what all-season (M+S) tires not bearing the symbol can deliver, they do not match the capability of a true winter tire in all adverse weather conditions.

"The only constant is change."
-Heraclitus, 6th Century B.C.

Progress is one of the enduring hallmarks of mankind - innovation, advancement, momentum. It is as inevitable as entropy, as gravity. However, simply because it's a guarantee doesn't minimize the value of examining each step along the way. Every time a new tire is brought to market, we have to ask ourselves: why? What's changed? What justifies this new version, this new variation?

In Cooper's case, the question is even more relevant, as the new Discoverer Road+Trail AT follows up the immensely popular Discoverer AT3 4S, a tire that has consistently ranked at-or-near the top of customer surveys since shortly after its debut. There's a great deal of research, testing, tuning and iterative manufacturing that goes into even a minor tire refresh, so even small upgrades are worthy of note.

The exterior differences are evident, a more rugged sidewall design that flows nicely from the shoulder lugs, a moderate, but more aggressive tread pattern, even the name is more evocative of its off-road DNA. At Tire Rack, we don't just settle for what we can observe on the surface, and our testing team is always looking for more questions to answer. So, we set our team to the roads and our own custom-built track, to find out what drivers can expect from both tires.

On the Road

The quality of the ride between both tires averaged out close enough that we can say most consumers won't notice a significant qualitative difference between the two. However, that does not mean the experiences were identical. The Discoverer AT3 4S was firm, with more undulation over smaller imperfections, and while larger impacts were somewhat controlled, the Discoverer Road+Trail AT was notably softer over those same big hits, despite being a bit bouncier. Both were largely comfortable, with minor, nuanced differences between the two. Their respective noise profiles were a bit more pronounced, and while some of these examples are less severe than their descriptions here, it's important to dive into the minutia separating the two. The Discoverer AT3 4S kept an overall low volume across most surfaces, with some standout moments. It exhibited a regular drone over concrete and continued when switching to asphalt with a pitch change, along with some cyclical rhythm above a lower-volume grind. Conversely, the Discoverer Road+Trail AT expressed a higher-pitched performance, which seemed to result in a greater variety of tones, giving a slight edge to its predecessor here. Finally, the response to steering input was a fairly clear subject of ongoing improvement: the Discoverer AT3 4S was decent, a bit sluggish in response, needing to be led a bit before the tire catches up. The Discoverer Road+Trail AT was much more alert by comparison. It felt appropriately weighted, linear, almost athletic, which is really saying something for this category.

On our Track

Around the wet track, both tires showcased solid traction for the category, with a small step up for the Discoverer Road+Trail AT, which naturally translated into similar braking characteristics also. When it came to steering the tires around the track, the Discoverer AT3 4S's tendency for slower steering affected its response time, and wouldn't respond as well to overlapping inputs or being hustled too hard. Too much speed and it would understeer through corners. It could rotate if coerced, but never happily. The Discoverer Road+Trail AT by contrast, was more eager and alert, and felt like the front axle was really leading the action. It would rotate around corners easily and it was forgiving, leaving room for later inputs, catching up to driver intention with ready excitement. Fairly normal for an All-Terrain tire: it was not particularly precise, but in the right conditions, satisfying to drive.

Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S5.7134.510.66112.0
Cooper Discoverer Road+Trail AT5.6134.090.68109.3

Once the track dried off, the Discoverer AT3 4S shook off the droplets, dusted off its shoulders and made a show of gliding effortlessly around the course. No wasted movement, admittedly very little rotation, just efficient, neutrally balanced professionalism. It wasn't playful or quick, particularly in the steering department, it was simply a polished, capable tire doing the job it was asked to do. On the other hand, the Discoverer Road+Trail AT was an improvement in steering, and its additional responsiveness translated to a much more eager, excitable experience. It would rotate around a corner, but not in a way that allowed it to translate the movement into speed. The tire allowed our drivers to pull showy maneuvers, but it didn't make them useful for fast laps. Slowing down and driving carefully may not have been as thrilling, but it actually resulted in faster laps.

Driving in Winter Conditions

Snow and ice are notoriously challenging weather events to deal with as drivers. While all-terrain tires are designed to adapt to a variety of conditions, that flexibility in design also means they're not fully equipped to match the purpose-built performance of a winter tire. It's not uncommon that the low-traction conditions created by snow and ice can significantly change, or even invert, the driving characteristics seen on dry or wet tracks. It's more impressive then, that both tires remained fairly consistent in their handling during snow avoidance maneuvers. The Discoverer AT3 4S retained the same kind of no-nonsense behavior it showed in the dry and wet, with little slip, little fuss, and steering that was responsive, but unhurried. The Discoverer Road+Trail AT adds urgency to the mix, creating more responsive turn-in and directional changes without losing a sense of feeling planted and stable despite the conditions. As with other surfaces, it could also be coaxed into a bit of rotation, but otherwise, remained well-behaved, doing exactly what was asked of it. The objective numbers bear this out as well, with both tires well-matched in straight-line traction, only a foot apart in acceleration, and the Discoverer Road+Trail AT gaining an additional 5 feet of stopping distance over its predecessor. Braking distances on the ice yielded a minor upset, with the Discoverer AT3 4S stopping just shy of 3 feet shorter, but outside of that narrow case, we saw the kind of distinct progressive improvement expected from a successor tire.

Conclusion

Our preview drive reminds us that indeed, everything changes. The Discoverer AT3 4S was a well-loved tire that performed well in its category, proving itself as one of the leading tires in its segment. Following up on a success like that is a difficult task and carries a lot of pressure to get it right. For the most part, the new Discoverer Road+Trail AT feels like a proper incremental refresh: improving the aesthetics of the tire, showing superior wet and winter performance, and at least matching the quality of its predecessor's on-road comfort. Cooper took the Discoverer AT3 4S, examined what worked, and what didn't, and made the kind of focused, gradual improvements where it was needed and mattered most.

...Thus far my MXM4 almost silent & slice huge rain puddles like knife through butter...

After much research for extremely quiet, smooth AND slightly performance oriented tires, I chose MXM4. Very happy with MXM4! Declined Michelin Premier due to low tread depth (8.5) & noise on certain surfaces. Superbly quiet & smooth Pirelli Cinturato + an obvious option, but recent reviews poor in rain bothered me due to heavy rains in FL & they're not reviewed as at all athletic. (Would like to try later as v. quiet; I guess recent rain weakness due to small change in manufacturing) So what did that leave in terms of VERY quiet, smooth but athletic, enjoyable tire? Experience of many decades taught me not to trust continental. They make some good tires (DWs06) - but often weak sidewalls & sometimes noise are issues. (Germans make great cars & dogs; but tires?) So I bought Goodyear Assurance comfort + for my other MB (classic S class V12) and they are fantastic (tirerack isn't always best on older tires) but on concrete highways & generally they're not quite as quiet as my previous Primacy MXV4. Also GY hydroplaning resistance not as perfect as MXM4. GY still a fantastic v. quiet & long lasting tire: For a heavy V12 I never have to think about them any more: Solid; job done! So for E320? Almost swayed by Bridgestone Turanza Serenity +, but a recent rental car with them showed they're good but not as good as Michelin. Some TR advisors advised modern (harder) tires, one TR advisor nailed it: MXM4 = extremely quiet, smooth but ALSO bit more athletic. Thus far my MXM4 almost silent & slice huge rain puddles like knife through butter. Ride is smooth but likely not as comfortable as Pirelli? Premier may be softer ride. Older car owners may not realise how worn their suspension is. Before buying my E320 I planned to replace ALL rear suspension. At 500 AA A: good handling but not harsh sport tire. Benz no longer feels like wagon! Pilot Exalto PE2 another poss. sleeper? Thus far MXM4 are near silent with good handling & perfect rain control. Research pays: MXM4 just awesome!

...Wet traction leaves the BS way behind. Awesome in our heavy South Florida rain storms...

225-45-18 Camry SE Sport.

Bought these to replace the hard riding, not great in the rain Bridgestone Turanza EL400-02 that came factory on the car (and expensive). They made it to 25k before needing replacement. They only had a 260 UTQG treadwear life, so that seems about right

These were an instant big improvement in ride quality and noise. Wet traction leaves the BS way behind. Awesome in our heavy South Florida rain storms. They are very quiet and ride very nice, and smooth.

My only concern is tread life. I drive almost all highway, and don't drive aggressive at all. After 5,00 miles they are down to 8/32's from new 10.5/32's. That has me a quite worried. The treadlife UTQG is 500 on these. Do tires wear quicker at highway speed? I don't know, but guess maybe so.

So, other than the treadwear they are great. Hopefully the treadwear will slow don some, because at this rate they won't even last as long as the Bridgestones.

I was surprised at how well they gripped with 14,000 miles of wear this past winter in rare for South Carolina snow and freezing rain...

I bought a certified pre-owned '07 Accord SE V6 and the OEM tires had been replaced by Hankook V4 ES's. The ride was awful. I expected much better from an Accord; my wife's '08 Civic rode smoother (see my review of the Hankooks from April 2012). After 20,000 miles and 70% tread life remaining, I "tired" of the rough ride and bought a set of Primacy MXM4's. I was looking for something a little more performance oriented than OEM replacements. The Michelins now have 20,000 miles on them. The Michelins have much better traction in dry and rain -- the traction control seldom activates -- and I was surprised at how well they gripped with 14,000 miles of wear this past winter in rare for South Carolina snow and freezing rain. However, the ride quality is still awful, but after talking to a friend who bought an Accord SE V6 for his son and complained about the ride, I think the problem is that Honda did not tune the suspension for the 17" wheels and shorter 50 series sidewalls; I do not believe there is an issue with the ride quality of the MXM's. (I wanted a set for wife's Civic because MXV's will probably dry rot before she wears them out -- the Civic averages 5000 miles a year, so long-wearing tires aren't really desirable -- but MXM's are no longer available in Civic size). If I wear out these MXM's before I get another car, I will definitely get another set. And -- three of the tires were made in France and one came from the US; absolutely no difference in wear, performance, aging appearance, etc.

...Choose the Primacy MXM4 for its Wet/Dry performace, I drive through the mountains of northern New England...

Replaced the OEM Hankook's when I took my snows off in the spring . The michelin's have performed as I would expect a Michelin to. Choose the Primacy MXM4 for its Wet/Dry performace, I drive aprox. 550 miles a week in through the mountains of northern New England. I am very impressed with the wet performance, no slipping or sliding and excellent road feel wet or dry. Also the tires are very quiet, minimal road noise.

...Excellent grip in corners both wet and dry, quiet ride and for me had a long life...

Drove just over 50,000 miles on these tires with my 2012 Prius Performance Plus edition. I'm a spirited driver and was very happy with these tires overall. Excellent grip in corners both wet and dry, quiet ride and for me had a long life. Only downfalls I found with these tires were in any type of snow or ice and the fact that these are rather pricey. I'm trying out some MICHELIN PILOT SPORT A/S 3+ tires this time around which so far feel great, but I do notice they have a bit more road noise than the MXM4's.

These tire are great so far... Just had them installed a few days ago but from the time I pulled off from the shop I could tell that the responsiveness of these tires were much better than the tires that came on my car from the factory. There is very little road noise to speak of. Can't comment to much on the proformamce since i don't have many miles on them yet but if they proform anywhere never were the M/S II do on my SUV that are going to be great. The price was great on these tires as well. I will update this review in a couple of months after we put some miles on the car. I can tell you that this tire really grips the road in corners.

Car from stock either comes with Bridgestone's or Michelin's. Mine came with Michelin's but the MXV4's. I deceided i wanted better handling. So went from V to M. What a huge difference. The car hugs the road now and sits on it. It also rides so quit and smooth. But the handling is like night and day from the other Michelins. Don't know whay they don't put them on stock. ...Very comfortable ride and very quiet...

These were OEM on my Lincoln MKZ. Very comfortable ride and very quiet. Dry handling was solid although there was some weird cornering effects. Overall a mostly refined tire. My main complaint is treadlife. The MKZ isn't a burner but I drove the turbo somewhat aggressively. I take corner fast and brake harder then normal. But the tires were completely spent at 28000 miles. two were at 1/32. One and two were completely bald. My scheduled maintenance on the car was free so I did that religiously. I know these aren't 80k tires but I was really disappointed for what's supposed to be a premium Michelin product. I wouldn't buy these if given the choice.

I have these tires on a '04 pontiac Bonneville GXP as summer tires. Rarely gets used during cold months at all. On the way home from getting these mounted I had a wheel alignment done as previous Bridgestone potenza tires had severe inner wear. The Bridgestons are the only other tires I have had on this car and the MXM's are far and away a better tire by comparison. Quiet, good traction, great wear and very impressed when caught in light show with these. They are a great overall fit for my Pontiac Bonneville GXP. Interesting side note: I check air pressure at least twice a month and these tires hold pressure the best of any I have had on any car. Even after 5 months of storage I take the car out and tire pressure did not go down. These are not a Pilot but if you want something that has a higher tread wear rateing while giving up little in performance this is for you.

I have to honestly say, i did not expect to get 65,000 miles off of these tires!! Wow!!!...

I got these tires about 3 years ago to replace the OEM tires that came on my Civic SI. Now I am researching whether or not I want to stay with these or go with another brand. I have to honestly say, i did not expect to get 65,000 miles off of these tires!! Wow!!! Overall these tires have been GREAT!!!! In all conditions they have performed very well. I only drove them in light snow covered roads this past winter and they did well. I did not drive in ice or heavy snow. If you are looking for a good grand touring tire that will last for a few years these are the ones you are looking for!! Yes they are a little pricey but they are worth it. On these tires, i average about 31/32 miles per gallon driving to work and casually driving. ON straight highway/roadtrips i got about 34/35. Awesome!!
