The winter compound of the Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV is specially designed to maintain flexibility and traction in snow, ice and extreme cold conditions. This Arctic Grip Crystal-infused compound has been molded into a directional pattern with an alternating center rib designed to increase contact with the road, ice, and hard-packed snow. The bold V-shaped tread design swiftly channels water and slush away from the contact patch, sipes provide numerous biting edges that help enhance traction for a firm grip on wet surfaces, to reduce the risk of hydroplaning. In addition, the V-shaped design serves as a traction-enhancing plow for snow in more severe weather conditions.
Internal construction of the Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV is comprised of two polyester casing plies covered by two steel belts to form a reliable tread base. A final layer of polyamide reinforces the steel for additional strength and stability. In addition, Nokian has included Aramid fibers threaded into the sidewalls for additional puncture resistance and durability.
