Tire Rack Test

Does this tire fit your vehicle?

Tires are designed specifically for different vehicles and wheel sizes. Tell us about your vehicle or the specific size you want so we can help find the right tires for you.

The Scorpion STR A and Scorpion STR tires are Pirelli's premium Highway All-Season tires that were designed to deliver the Stability, Traction and Ratings (STR) appropriate for today's light trucks by adapting their performance to the needs of crossover vehicles, sport utility vehicles and light duty pickup trucks. The Scorpion STR tires are designed to combine a quiet and comfortable ride along with ease of handling and year-round traction, even in light snow.

The Scorpion STR's tread compound is molded into one of two similar, but slightly different symmetric tread designs. The tires featuring Pirelli's North American tread pattern are identified as Scorpion STR A tires, while those featuring their European tread pattern are simply identified as Scorpion STR tires.

The Scorpion STR A tire's North American tread pattern features continuous shoulder ribs and narrower groves between all of the independent tread blocks. This type of tread design would tend to result in a quieter, more even-wearing tire.

The Scorpion STR tire's European tread pattern features lateral grooves through the shoulder ribs and larger grooves between all of the independent tread blocks. This type of tread design would tend to result in a tire with better hydroplaning resistance and wet traction.

On the inside, both Scorpion STR tires feature twin, high- tensile steel belts reinforced with polyamide to provide strength and durability on top of a two-ply polyester cord body that helps cushion the ride.

NOTE: The Scorpion STR in the 215/65R16 98V can be used in axle pairs to substitute for the Scorpion ST in the 215/65R16 98H size on Volvo XC70 AWD vehicles.

Sooner or Later You'll Own Generals - Maybe Now is the Time(04:02)

If you ask people about General tires, many will remember the decades-old slogan "sooner or later you'll own Generals." General recently introduced the Grabber HTS as the newest member of the Grabber family of SUV and pick-up/light truck tires, focusing on all-season traction and ride quality for drivers who never need to venture off paved roads and highways. To gain a better understanding of how well the new General Grabber HTS fits with today's SUVs, we did some comparing. Maybe now is the time.

...Great in the rain, don't slip at all...

Much better than the original Bridgestone's. They seem to be wearing well, have about 7.5-8/ 32nds still after 12,000 miles. Highway ride is great, very controlled and solid. They hum a little at speed but most tires this wide will make some noise. Great in the rain, don't slip at all. Snow experience is limited but has been great in our experience. For the price there is no better tire for a performance SUV. I have to say I am really surprised that they don't rate higher compared to other tires in this category.

I know this is not a lot of miles on a new set of tires but I can really tell the differance from the stock Wrangler HP's.These tires are much quiter , don't thump across the expansion strips in the road and they feel secure on wet roads . The Wranglers slipped on wet roads from the start. I will have to wait on the snow traction , All I can hope for is they are better than the stock tires.

...Moreover, they handle great at 100mph+, wet or dry...

Having worked in a National Tire Chain Store for four year during my college years, I can say I have seen and experience first hand with different models of tires in the hundreds. These Pirelli STR came as O.E. tires on the XC, and they have been unexpectedly great tires for the past 25,000 mi; now, they still have about 6/32nd left on the tread.

The Pirellis Ive worked with/seen in the past are typically either out of round, cupped, or seperated (steel belts). Luckily, none exist on my set.. so far (cross my fingers). Ive used these tires for Off Road expeditions many times, and incredibly been a V-rated tire, it did fairly well in the sand, gravel and mud. Moreover, they handle great at 100mph+, wet or dry.

The only complaint I have is the noise level which is not as quiest as I hope it would be( but much quieter than the old Pirelli STs on the loaner I received), and also it could use a little bit more grip on dusty/sandy surfaces. But then again, the XC has so much low end torque, Im not sure any 215mm section width tire can handle it; maybe its time to upgrade to a set of 225/55/17 or 235/50/18.

...I have really put these tires to the test in dry, in wet, on ice, or in snow the traction is fanominal...

Though I have only had theese tires for a short time (550 miles) they are unbelievable! I have really put these tires to the test dry, wet, ice, or snow the traction is fanominal. The hydroplaning resistamce is also remarkable along with the cornering stability, steering Responsiveness, ride comfort, noise level, and at the time treadwear. I would definatly purchase these tires again. Lincoln made a great choice of putting these tires on the Navigaotr staock. I love them.

...they are great in wet conditions including snow, wonderfully grippy on ice...

I replace Michelin Pilots A/S with the Pirelli STR because of problems with the Michelins. I chose the Pirellis carefully after reading the tests and reviews on tire rack. This is a fantastic tire for the X3; the ride used to be hard and unpleasantly harsh and noisy over bumps, tar strips, etc. Now in one day it was like getting a new car. The tires are silent; they absorb road irregularuties to an unbelievable level; they are great in wet conditions including snow, wonderfully grippy on ice; the noisy bumpy ride is gone, replaced by a supple controlled ride with more tire feel than the Michelins. For the first time in a year I enjoy driving this car and so does my wife. Highly recommended for this type of vehicle.

As you see I live in a nasty climate. I have read multiple reviews on different tires and here is my review. I feel my pirelli scorpion STR is awesome. I had got these in the dead of summer and was really impressed with the improvment in ride quality. Now, in the first real winter storm we have had, Im still impressed with them. Ice traction seems to always an issue for people but, realize this. Ice traction will ---- with any tire you buy! Now as far as stopping on ice they are great in my vehicle. Vehicles will very here because of the braking system. Overall this is a great tire and I would purchase again. I have had multiple a/t tires that performed like crap compared to these, for instance Yokohama Geolander A/Ts, they are terrible!!! Anyway I hope to help someone out there with this review.

...Although we have not used them in snow yet, the summer wet and dry traction is excellent...

We like these tires so much at 1500 miles that we insisted the dealer take them off our old escape and install them on our new one when we bought it! Although we have not used them in snow yet, the summer wet and dry traction is excellent, noise is low and comfort is very good. Have had no trouble like other reviews. Much better than stock contitrac SUV tires in all catagories. STRs look good too!

These tires were orginal equipment on our european delievery BMW X3csi / sport package.

I was conserned driving the alps, no worry. These are the quietiest, least expensive, and best all purpose tires I have ever driven. My family has lots of different quality tires on many cars, these are exceptional. I race bmws and know tires somewhat, accidently we had these strs on a racetrack, for a non race compound these had tremendous grip, turn in, and low noise. I was orginally looking for a cheaper brand of summer tire. No way now that I know the price of these, Im sticking with the Pirellis

...Traction and hydroplaning resistance are quite good in both the wet and the dry. Steering is exact and cornering grip and stability are quite good...

Had the tires for only a week, and will do future updates as they are warranted. So far they have impressed me quite well. No snow or ice yet, but that undoubtedly will change in the coming months. Traction and hydroplaning resistance are quite good in both the wet and the dry. Steering is exact and cornering grip and stability are also quite good. Steering responsiveness is a bit less impressive, mostly due to the perceived increase in weight of this tire over the OEM Wrangler SR-As, so initial steering effort must be a bit high, but this is not a significant issue. Road noise is noticably less than the stock Goodyears. They roll ture and balnced very well. Tread and sidewall design look sharp and modern. Overall I hope that these Pirellis will continue to perform well, as I have had excellent luck out of some of their Ultra-High Performance All-Season Tires on previous cars I have owned. The ratings for this tire seem unusally low, but they always test high, and on the recommendation of Nate @ Tire Rack, I took a bit of a leap of faith to try this Light Truck tire. So far I am quite pleased. More to come after significant mileage.

...Gone is the wallowing on the highway and over bumps. The reduction in tire noise has been, to say the least, DRAMATIC!! No more tire slap over freeway expansion joints. No more BONG over potholes, no more anything bad...

Bought these to replace the terrible as all get out Cooper Tires I shoved on it just cuz they were cheap. Man what a night and day difference between the Scorpion and the Cooper. Not to mention the OE tire. Treadwear has been spectacular, handling is much improved. Gone is the "wallowing" on the highway and over bumps. The reduction in tire noise has been, to say the least, DRAMATIC!! No more tire "slap" over freeway expansion joints. No more BONG over potholes, no more anything bad. I cant say enough good things about this tire. Recently had them rotated and I was asked how many weeks ago I bought the tires, the guy had to pick his jaw off the floor when I told him they had about 12-14 thousand on them. He guestimated that they would last 60k by the minimal wear on them. For the price, handling, comfort and quiet I do not think there is a better tire on the market for SUV and LTs. Snow traction in the deep wet stuff is not all that great, but I really did not have any problems until a 4% grade and 13 inches of unplowed snow. Gotta love my driveway!

I also feel they are fairly quiet on the highway. The Edge has a comfortable ride with them.

I am getting a new set after the initial set that came with my Ford Edge lasted 56,000 miles, they would have been on for at least 3,000 more, but a hole in one did not seal so I decided to replace the set. I was amazed at how long they have lasted, and I live on Long Island--lots of driving. Once I had 8 inches of heavy wet snow in my driveway, when my friend did not plow it, I was able to get the Ford Edge out as though it were just 2 inches. Some of that is due to the all-wheel drive system, but the car broke out like nobody's business. I was very impressed. I also feel they are fairly quiet on the highway as well. The Edge has a comfortable ride with them.

...Maybe it has something to do with the vehicle / tire match, but at least on my ML320 I have not experienced any of the tracking or noise problems mentioned by others here & I am very happy with the tire... in the dry & wet it performs equally as well as the Continentals & is also quiet...

I had Continental 4X4 Contacts on my ML320. Althouth they were quiet, comfortable, and performed well in all conditions, I was unhappy with them due to poor treadwear. I only got a little under 24K out of them with proper alignment, balancing, and rotation. Therefore, I was interested in trying another tire. I learned that there are only 2 other options if I wanted to keep the same size tire & speed rating that came as OEM (which I did). They are the Dunlop Sport 5000 & Pirelli Scorpion STR. Originally I was leaning toward the Dunlop, as it is (like the Continental) an OEM tire for a MB ML320 & the Pirelli is not. Also, this site had some reviews of the Pirelli that scared me away from it saying that it tracked poorly especially on grovved pavement & was loud. However, I looked at the Dunlop as a compromise, because it too got poor reviews for treadwear, where the Pirelli got good reviews for tread wear. I went with the Pirelli since the shop where I bought them had a 30 day exchange policy if I did not like them. Im glad I went with the Pirelli. Maybe it has something to do with the vehicle / tire match, but at least on my ML320 I have not experienced any of the tracking or noise problems mentioned by others here & I am very happy with the tire. I have yet to drive it on snow & ice, but in the dry & wet it performs equally as well as the Continentals & is also quiet. I have hopes treadwear will be much better, but it is hard to say, as I only have 1,000 miles on the tires so far.

...I think these tires excel in treadware, response, and wet/dry traction...

Got a set of these for my Tundra Crewmax after the stocks were nearly bald. Significant upgrade from what I had, but I bought my vehicle used, so I can't speak to how the stocks performed new in comparison.

I drive anywhere from 25k-35k miles a year for business, and haul a trailer. I think these tires excel in treadware, response, and wet/dry traction. They are pretty comfortable, but not soft by any means.
My biggest complaint is that they are louder than any A/T tire I've ever owned. Highway speeds up they quite a bit, but have a noticeable high pitch drone around 80 mph. From 0-45 they are ok, but anything after that is a constant drone, and it's pretty disappointing.
I probably wouldn't buy again unless I am in a pinch for cash and these are on sale.
Go get Kuhmos.

...At 32,000 miles the tires still have decent amount of tread left on them. I predict that I will be replacing them sometime this fall before the weather changes... I dont understand how some reviews state they were only able to get 17,000 miles from these tires. Either they don't keep their tires properly inflated or they just simply abuse them on starting, stopping, and cornering...

These are the OEM tires that came with my X3. All driving has been Autobahn driving at average speeds of 90-110 mph. I have the tires rotated about every 6000 miles and check air pressure with every other fill-up or before a long trip. I typically am not a big fan of OEM tires, but these tires have changed my outlook. At 32,000 miles the tires still have a decent amount of tread left on them. I predict that I will be replacing them sometime this fall before the weather changes.

I categorize myself as a "spirited" driver in that I very rarely drive under 100 mph when the speed limit is unrestricted. The tires handle very well at that speed -- they are stable and respond well. I have never experienced problems with hydroplaning or while driving in light snow. Deep snow is another issue -- if you live in an area that has bad winters I definitely recommend buying snow tires.

I dont understand how some reviews state they were only able to get 17,000 miles from these tires. Either they don't keep their tires properly inflated or they just simply abuse them on starting, stopping, and cornering.

Would I purchase these tires again? Very likely. I am pleased with how my vehicle handles and responds with these tires. I do need to mention that these are the only tires I have experienced thus far with this vehicle since they were standard equipment. If I had the opportunity to drive another X3 with different tires, I would be able to provide a more thorough decision.

These are the original equipment tires that came on my Edge. Until getting this vehicle, I was not a Pirelli fan, having had some of their tires on an early '80s Porsche 911 that felt like rocks. The Scorpion STRs, though, are quite different. The ride, handling and wear are all very nice. While I am faced with replacing them after 50,000 miles, a little less than I had hoped, the fact is that most of our driving is around town, which is harder on the tires, and the car is driven mostly by my wife, who is a bit hard on tires. So, I'm actually pleased with the 50,000 miles. The tires are also not noisy at highway speeds. My gas mileage is less than I had hoped (20-22 hwy; 18-20 city), but that has more to do with the AWD feature of the Edge than it does the tires. I am giving these tires a preference as I search for replacements.
