The Pilot Super Sport is Michelin's Max Performance Summer tire initially introduced as Original Equipment on several of the world's most sophisticated performance vehicles, including the exclusive, limited-edition Ferrari 599 GTO, Ferrari's fastest road car ever. Developed for drivers who care about how tire technology enhances their vehicle's performance and safety, Pilot Super Sport tires expand the Max Performance Summer tire performance envelope by delivering durability, handling and traction while increasing tread life.

Building on the development of racing tires designed to carry Prototype and GT class cars to endurance race victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, 12 Hours of Sebring and Road Atlanta's Petit Lemans, Pilot Super Sport tires are designed to deliver consistent performance and longevity by blending Max Performance driving characteristics with extended tread wear.

While the importance of tire treadwear in endurance racing may not be immediately apparent, Michelin tires set records during the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2010. One of the 2010 LMP Class leaders completed 46 consecutive laps on one set of tires with an average pace just 1% off of the pole position qualifying time. That's almost 400 racing miles on one set of tires at an average speed of 150 mph.

Additionally the overall winner used just 11 sets of tires to cover a record 3,362 miles, averaging nearly 140 mph and almost 300 racing miles per set of tires. That represented almost a 25% wear improvement compared to just one year earlier where the overall winner needed 14 sets of tires to cover 3,235 miles. By developing longer wearing racing tires without sacrificing performance, Michelin tires allowed the teams to run record race paces while converting some of the time previously spent changing tires in the pits into productive time covering more miles on the track.

While Pilot Super Sport tires are designed to allow sports cars, sporty coupes, performance sedans and supercars to achieve their full potential in dry and wet conditions, like all summer tires they are not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.

The Pilot Super Sport features an asymmetric design molded of Michelin's Bi-Compound tread rubber featuring a Le Mans-inspired dry compound outboard side-by-side with their latest generation of wet compound inboard. The low-void outboard shoulder features a track-type compound to withstand the stresses of high performance cornering while the notched center ribs and inboard shoulder feature a compound designed for superior performance at very high speeds and in wet conditions.

The tire's internal structure features twin steel belts reinforced by spirally wound Twaron cord. Twaron is a polyamide cord that offers a lightweight, high-strength reinforcement above the steel belts to enhance high-speed handling, wear and durability. Michelin FAZ Technology (Filament At Zero degrees) winds the Twaron cord around the tire circumference much the same way fishing line is wound onto fishing reels to allow Michelin engineers to tune tension and strength. The Pilot Super Sport features a polyester casing to promote a comfortable ride and responsive handling.

Pilot Super Sport tires are comparatively light, with weight savings of up to 10% compared to other tires of similar dimensions. This reduces unsprung weight to improve handling.

Limited sizes of the Michelin Pilot Super Sport are available with Michelin Acoustic Technology, which involves the manufacturer adhering a layer of sound-absorbing foam to the inner liner of the tire to reduce cabin noise in the vehicle. These sizes are identified on the Specs page and in the search results

...In in the wet the Michelin PSS is also passing my tests with flying colors...

Michelin Pilot Super Sports on a Audi A3. Just a really brilliant tire. Very impressed with stability, steering input response and overall dry traction. In the wet the Michelin PSS is also passing my tests with flying colors. These tires replaced a set of all season Falken's. While the Ziex 912's are no slouch, they are easily outperformed by the PSS. It is no contest. If you want a summer tire for maximum performance, look no further than the Michelin Pilot Super Sports. You will not be disappointed.

...Then I took them to the autocross in the rain, and MY GOODNESS are they grippy - granted it was soaking wet - but that's what impressed me even more!...

I just got these tires about a week ago and the first time I drove my car with these tires, I immediately noticed how quiet and comfy they are (compared to the General Exclaim UHPs I had) I can actually hear wind noise now haha!

Then I took them to the autocross in the rain, and MY GOODNESS are they grippy - granted it was soaking wet - but that's what impressed me even more! I am yet to use them in a dry autocross event, but so far, it's looking promising.

I really can't comment too much on dry grip just yet but I've done some spirited driving on a mountain road, and I immediately felt a superb amount of stability and it definitely feels like i could push the car much much more.

Two thumbs up Michelin, I am thoroughly impressed. Please keep up the good work!

...These tires have excellent dry and wet traction and the cornering stability is like no other tire I have every used.

Have had these tires for just over 2 years and am retiring them at around 70,000km. I absolutely loved them. Excellent dry and wet traction and the cornering stability is like no other tire I have every used. Have had my car at 200 kph (124 mph) and the tires felt like I was going 100 kph (60 mph) it was so smooth. Going to replace these with the new Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 as they are a very similar tire.

...They provide excellent traction in wet and dry...

These are the best tires I've ever purchased. They provide excellent traction in wet and dry. They're quiet, which is very important to me as drive on the highway a lot. At about 5k miles, they are showing very little wear. They even look good on the car. Highly recommend this tire!

...Crisp cornering, braking... Same ramp, 62 degrees,,, all bite.

These tires as "as advertised". Kind of unbelievable they are not asking for more money. Crisp cornering, braking. I was driving a ramp rather spirited with my previous perellis(temp was about 65degrees) and I suddenly and unexpectedly slid, and corrected in time. Goodbye Pirelli's(that need warm up, and warm temps) hells SS. Same ramp, 62 degrees,,, all bite.

...They started off nearly silent on the way down. After 3k they're not as quiet, but still acceptable. They ride as comfortable as you can expect a lo profile tire to ride...

Just completed a 3,000 mile round trip journey to the tail of the dragon with these tires. This is the 4th set I've had on the car, and these are the best I've had on this car by far. Went on a rain run with 2 other guys. While they said they had some hairy moments, these tires inspired nothing but confidence. Grip for days on dry roads. They started off nearly silent on the way down. After 3k they're not as quiet, but still acceptable. They ride as comfortable as you can expect a lo profile tire to ride. Tread wear seems reasonable so far. Will definitely be buying another set of these in the future.

...Still love the car and tires, just don't recommend regular use in the rain.

These came on the ATS-V I ordered through the dealer this year. I raced the same model car down on Sonoma (CA) raceway last year and loved it. The tires are great in dry weather and do all I want. I'm writing this review because I saw comment that the tires don't hydroplane - I disagree. Yes, I live in WA state and we get rain regularly but today was a normal rain just at the edge of switching my wipers from intermittent to continual slow speed. Going the twenty miles from Burien to Federal Way I found the front end easily influenced by any standing water on the roadway. Still love the car and tires, just don't recommend regular use in the rain.

...For the much better price and 50% longer treadwear rating, these seem to be an excellent replacement option...

Just drove with these new tires that replaced my OEM Pilot Sport PS2s. I have to say that so far I actually am liking these more than the OEMs. They seem like a softer ride and quieter and drive more straight. The PS2s seemed to always want to grab an edge on the roadway and go with it. I was a little worried that the 103XL rating on the tires might make for a harsher ride on this luxury/sports car but if it did, I haven't noticed it at all. For the much better price and 50% longer treadwear rating, these seem to be an excellent replacement option. Will try to update once I've driven them for six months or so.

...The wear has been excellent as well. At about 7500 miles it appears the tread on the rears is maybe 50% or a little more, so with one or two track days if the rears last 20k miles I am way beyond happy. This is much more than any other max performance tires I have tried...

These replaced Pilot Sports (not even PS2) and they are absolutely a world apart. These tires clearly match the car's capabilities. In all ways they are better than the previous Pilot Sports: traction (unreal), responsiveness, straight line (very little tramlining), feedback, traction (worth mentioning twice). They are a little quieter and softer feeling than the PSs but with these kinds of tires that's a relative comparison. Over the last few thousand miles they have gotten a little bit louder than initially, but still not at all objectionable if you are used to this kind of car.

They've had one good track day on them as well and behaved beautifully although it was my first track day in over 5 years so I was not pushing beyond maybe 8/10s.

The wear has been excellent as well. At about 7500 miles it appears the tread on the rears is maybe 50% or a little more, so with one or two track days if the rears last 20k miles I am way beyond happy. This is much more than any other max performance tires I have tried.

Among the PS, PS2, various S02s, RE11 on 911s that I have tried, these tires are unquestionably, hands down the best. And they're one of the less expensive of those, maybe even *the* least expensive.

Total winning combination. No question it will be Super Sports for me from here on.

BTW my rear size is 285/30-18 which is not available. Instead, I went up 5 in aspect ratio to 285/35-18 and bumped the fronts up 10mm in width to partially compensate for the diameter difference. This works perfectly, and my suspension is lowered (OEM X74).

I've been driving Audi's and BMW's for 20 years, with high performance tires - spirited technical driving. Hands down these have been the best performing tires I've owned, and, they've lasted 25,000 miles of near perfect performance. They're finally getting feathered and a bit loud - with another 5-10,000 miles of tread left. I'm torn - buy another of the PSS, or move to the PSS4. Amazing tires that leave me very impressed with the Michellin engineers.
