The Potenza RE050A is a Max Performance Summer tire designed to complement the performance of sports cars, sports coupes and sport sedans. While the Potenza RE050 is used as Original Equipment on the supercharged Mercedes-Benz S55 AMG sedan, a Potenza RE050A Scuderia version is used on the 12-cylinder Enzo Ferrari supercar, and a Run Flat version is used on the BMW Z4 sports cars and 5-Series sedans. The Potenza RE050A was developed to provide good traction along with responsive and predictable dry and wet road handling. It is not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.

On the outside, the Potenza RE050A features a high grip tread compound molded into an asymmetric tread design. A continuous center rib, large tread blocks and stable shoulder elements provide responsive handling, high-speed stability and traction on dry roads, while circumferential and lateral tread grooves are aimed to pump water out from under the tire's footprint to minimize hydroplaning and aid wet traction. A continuous circumferential rib adjacent to the inside shoulder blocks enhances wear quality to help reduce noise throughout the life of the tire, especially on cars with alignment settings that specify negative camber. Internally, the Potenza RE050A features twin steel belts reinforced by spiral-wrapped nylon to stabilize the tread area and enhance handling, high speed capability and ride quality while minimizing weight. The fabric cord body and hard rubber sidewall filler help blend uniform ride quality with steering response and lateral stability.

Vehicles Used

2003 BMW 330Ci

It wasn’t that long ago that only the most exotic sports cars were equipped with Max Performance Summer tires as Original Equipment. But today, as more vehicles are coming with these tires right from the factory, combined with an expansion of sizes beyond OE within many of the tire lines, the availability of these Max Performance tires is growing into sizes for more everyday vehicles. This allows drivers of sports cars, coupes and sedans to choose from a growing range of tire "personalities," each capable of delivering maximum performance.

One of the most recent OE-derived Max Performance Summer tires to be expanded into a range of replacement sizes is the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A. Versions of this tire have been fitted to cars from BMW, Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz. To get an understanding of how this tire performs in the real world on vehicles driven everyday, we conducted a Real World Road Ride and Performance Track Drive comparing the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A with the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 and the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2.

We used 2003 BMW 330Ci coupes, and installed 225/45R17 tires mounted on 17x8" wheels. This is a common "Plus Zero" tire and wheel package for the 330Ci coupe, and a popular "Plus One" package for standard 3 Series BMWs. Our evaluation used new, full tread depth tires.

We also included a fourth 2003 BMW 330Ci fitted with the Original Equipment 205/50R17 Goodyear Eagle RS-A High Performance All-Season tires mounted on factory 17x7.0" wheels. We have included this vehicle/tire combination in other tire evaluations, and have found it helpful to have an OE-equipped vehicle to evaluate the impact of installing the other products in the test.

Goodyear Eagle RS-A

The Goodyear Eagle RS-A is a High Performance All-Season tire produced with several speed ratings and in a wide variety of sizes. Its design is heavily influenced by its use as an Original Equipment tire by BMW, Volkswagen, General Motors, Chrysler and others. The Eagle RS-A features a subtle asymmetric tread design with larger tread elements in the outside shoulder intended to deliver more responsive handling, cornering, and steering. Smaller tread blocks on the inside shoulder combined with wide tread and lateral grooves are intended to enhance wet and snow traction.

Out on the road, the Eagle RS-A exhibited good road manners, providing levels of ride comfort and road noise that were appropriate for tires in the High Performance All-Season tire category. While delivering more ride and noise comfort than the Max Performance Summer tires in this evaluation, the Eagle RS-A could not match the road handling and crisp steering response of the other tires tested.

On the track in the dry, the Eagle RS-A offered handling that was appropriate for tires in the High Performance All-Season tire category. While the Eagle RS-A has proven it delivers respectable performance when compared to other tires in its category, it could not match the sure-footed feel or quick average lap times of the other three tires in this evaluation.

Under wet conditions, the Eagle RS-A High Performance All-Season tire proved to be at an even bigger disadvantage over the Max Performance tires in this test. It posted an average lap time 1.9 seconds behind the first-place Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3.

Bridgestone Potenza RE050A

The Potenza RE050A is a Max Performance Summer tire originally designed to complement the performance of the supercharged Mercedes-Benz S55 AMG sedan, the Enzo Ferrari Supercar (as a Scuderia version), and the BMW Z4 sports cars and 5-Series sedans (as a Runflat version). Since its introduction as Original Equipment on these performance vehicles, the Potenza RE050A line has been expanded to include more sizes, designed to provide good traction along with responsive and predictable dry and wet road handling for many of today’s sports cars, coupes and sport sedans.

The Potenza RE050A features a high grip tread compound molded into an asymmetric tread design, where a continuous center rib, large tread blocks and stable shoulder elements provide responsive handling, high-speed stability and traction on dry roads. Circumferential and lateral tread grooves are aimed to pump water out from under the tire’s footprint to minimize hydroplaning and aid wet traction. Internally, the Potenza RE050A features twin steel belts reinforced by spiral-wrapped nylon to stabilize the tread area and enhance handling, high-speed capability and ride quality while minimizing weight. The fabric cord body and hard rubber sidewall filler help blend ride quality with steering response and lateral stability.

During the Real World Road Ride on the roads and highways surrounding our headquarters, the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A displayed sporty road manners, feeling nimble and very responsive. The tradeoff was a ride that was somewhat firmer over the sharper bumps and expansion joints than the other Max Performance tires in the test. Noise level was not objectionable, and rated as appropriate for a tire in this category.

On our dry handling track, the crisp handling of the Potenza RE050A received good marks by our team, and felt responsive and easy to drive. The Potenza RE050A did not offer quite as much lateral grip around the skid pad as the other two Max Performance tires, however.

Under wet conditions, the Potenza RE050A again felt very responsive, and was easy to drive. It again did not have quite as much wet grip as the other two Max Performance tires in this test, finishing a close third for average overall lap time.

Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3

The Eagle F1 GS-D3 Max Performance Summer tire was developed in Europe for driving enthusiasts around the world who want more performance from their factory stock or aftermarket tuned sports cars, sporty coupes and performance sedans.

On the outside, Eagle F1 GS-D3 tires feature Goodyear’s AAtrax tread compound molded into a distinctive, highly directional tread design. The OneTRED design combines three distinct patterns in the tread design to enhance dry and wet performance. First, a solid and continuous center zone maintains constant road contact to enhance straight-line tracking and initial steering response. Next, sweeping intermediate ribs emulate racing slicks by delivering shoulder-to-shoulder tread contact to further enhance steering response and dry road cornering traction.

The sweeping aquachannel grooves, which are three times longer than the tire’s contact patch, angle forward and out to the edges of the tread to avoid trapping air and water to reduce noise while enhancing wet traction and hydroplaning resistance. Finally, the intermediate ribs flow into the shoulder area to form long, stable shoulder blocks to grip the road during cornering and help resist the wear associated with aggressive driving.

Internally, steel belts are reinforced with spirally wound nylon to distribute the vehicle’s load across the tire’s footprint to provide high-speed durability and uniform ride qualities. Slightly angled body ply construction with high ply turn-ups enhance steering precision and high-speed stability.

On the road, the Eagle F1 GS-D3 felt responsive and sporty. We were not able to evaluate long-term wear characteristics, or the potential some highly directional tires have to develop noise-generating, irregular wear. While the Eagle F1 GS-D3 generated somewhat more tread noise than the Original Equipment tire, it was not found to be objectionable by our team.

On the test track in the dry, the Eagle F1 GS-D3 was praised for its handling and overall grip around the skidpad. When driven at the limit, this tire provided a broad, comfortable window to work in, making it easy to drive aggressively. Steering response was good, but not quite as crisp as the other two Max Performance Summer tires in this test.

On the wet track, the Eagle F1 GS-D3 just edged out the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 for the fastest average overall lap time, and scored well for cornering stability and predictability, providing confidence and plenty of traction in the higher speed corners. The aggressive, highly directional tread pattern was not challenged by the water level of our wet test, which is not designed to evaluate hydroplaning resistance.

Michelin Pilot Sport PS2

The Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 Max Performance Summer tire was initially developed for use as Original Equipment on some of the world’s most prestigious sports cars and sports sedans by combining world-class wet and dry handling with confident and predictable cornering. Some of the first fitments include the BMW Alpina Z8, Chrysler Crossfire, McLaren SLR and Porsche GT2 and GT3 models.

The Pilot Sport PS2 tire features advances in performance, wear, durability, and comfort thanks to Michelin’s patented C3M manufacturing technology, a highly advanced production process that allows for extremely precise placement of a wider variety of tire components than ever before. The Pilot Sport PS2 tread features two different rubber compounds across their treads. A hybrid silica/carbon black compound begins at the tire’s outer shoulder and continues across the tread until it joins a high-silica compound that continues to the tire’s inside shoulder. Each of these tread compounds is specifically formulated for its location to optimize dry and wet handling resulting in crisp, predictable cornering and increased wear and high-speed durability. Additionally, these high grip tread compounds are molded into an asymmetric design with large outer shoulder blocks along with continuous intermediate and center ribs (similar to that of Michelin’s Formula One tires) to enhance steering response and cornering stability. The tread design also features wide circumferential grooves and lateral notches that help channel water through the footprint to enhance wet road traction. On the inside, the tread design is supported by two, high-tensile, lightweight steel cord belts that are further reinforced by size-optimized, precisely placed, individual Aramid/nylon hybrid filaments. These Aramid/nylon hybrid filaments replace the old bands of nylon to bring the Pilot Sport PS2 to a new level of manufacturing and design-tuning precision. This precision allows the Pilot Sport PS2 to provide improved steering response and resistance to distortion while enhancing ride quality and high speed durability.

During the road portion of our evaluation, the Pilot Sport PS2 displayed taut road feel and provided crisp steering response. This did cause the Pilot Sport PS2 to feel just a little firmer than the other two Max Performance tires over the sharper bumps and expansion joints. On coarser concrete and asphalt surfaces, the Pilot Sport PS2 generated some additional tread noise, although our team did not find ride comfort and noise levels to be objectionable.

Out on the dry test track, the Pilot Sport PS2 delivered a strong performance, offering very good handling and turning the fastest average overall lap time of the test. Steering response was sharp without feeling nervous, and felt stable in the higher-speed, sweeping corners. The Pilot Sport PS2 felt predictable, and easy to control at the limit.

In the wet, the Pilot Sport PS2 also proved to be fast, nearly matching the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 for best average overall lap time. While the Eagle F1 GS-D3 felt slightly more stable around the fast, sweeping curve of the skidpad, the Pilot Sport PS2 offered moderately sharper steering response and provided driver confidence in the fast transitions of the slalom and hard 90-degree corners around the track.

Customers Say

Customer surveys indicate the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A delivers excellent dry traction and confident cornering, with many ratings in the 9-10 range, aligning with its Max Performance Summer design. Wet traction scores (7-8 average) show strong grip in most conditions, though some note occasional hydroplaning in heavy rain. Comfort is polarizing, with drivers split between praising its sporty feel and criticizing a stiff, noisy ride. Treadwear emerges as a notable concern, with frequent scores below 5, suggesting shorter lifespan under aggressive driving. Ideal for enthusiasts prioritizing dry/wet performance over long-term durability, this tire excels in its intended summer-focused role but trades off comfort and treadlife for grip.

...On wet roads I have to try to break loose sideways. I can corner almost as fast as on dry pavement -- That is amazing!!...

I bought these tires based on a recommendation from a friend and I am very impressed. I do mostly city/hwy driving in the Spring through Fall months and so I see many forms of weather and drive in it. On Dry, these handle as close to R compounds that Ive found in a 140 UTOQ rating. They stick, theyre quiet and seem to be holding up though theyve seen 30 minute track sessions as well. They heat up quickly, psrt of that may be due to my negative camber scrubbing them a little, but I use N instead of air and the drift in pressure is minimal (3-4 lbs max). On wet roads I have to try to get them to break loose sideways. I can corner almost as fast as on dry pavement -- That is amazing!! It is true that once they "give" they give all the way, but what good, sticky, well made doesnt? They scream at me when Im on the edge so I know how hard to push my car through the turns. What a great tire!! By far the best Ive owned. I will definitely buy them again.

...Dry and wet stick are amazing... With the ASC off and nailing the throttle in the wet, the car just accelerates briskly without drama. In a downpour, the tires are confidence-inspiring...

The RE050As in 235/40-17s newly mounted on stock 8.5 x 17 M Double Spoke II M3 rims on 3-Mar-06. Its now 8-Apr-06, and Ive put 1025 miles on the tires. Ride quality remains excellent. These are quiet and smooth tires when driven on acceptly paved roads. Dry and wet stick are amazing. My M3/4 has a Dinan airbox/exhaust/Conforti ECU reflash, netting 15 more hp than stock (to 255). With the ASC off and nailing the throttle in the wet, the car just accelerates briskly without drama. In a downpour, the tires are confidence-inspiring. Dry stick limits are far too high to test on the public roads--Im looking forward to doing a couple of drivers education track weekends with these tires to safely test the performance envelope. One criticism I have are the RE050As need for a rebalance at this low mileage. Newly mounted the tires needed very few weights to balance. After 1000 miles, I had vibration problems at 90+ mph speeds. Ive recently had the RE050As rebalanced, and hopefully the tires will settle in better. Overall Ive been very happy with the purchase. Im hoping for at least 12K to 15K miles before replacing them with another set.

...In the dry, this tire flat out rocks. To say that my driving style is spirited just does not quite describe it, and this tire has put huge smiles on my face every time that I have had a chance to really play with my Mazda. The tire responds very quickly to driver input, holds a line like it is running on rails and never gave me any problem with sudden line changes in the middle of the corner...

The first thing that you must remember with this tire is that it is not going to last long. It is a soft compound that is rated for 14k miles; I have about 11k with about 3/32 to 4/32 left. I am replacing them because of the poor hydroplaning resistance. I was less than impressed with this aspect to begin with, and it has not gotten any better with high wear.

Now, with the negative out of the way, less get to the good stuff. In the dry, this tire flat out rocks. To say that my driving style is spirited just does not quite describe it, and this tire has put huge smiles on my face every time that I have had a chance to really play with my Mazda. The tire responds very quickly to driver input, holds a line like it is running on rails and never gave me any problem with sudden line changes in the middle of the corner. Everything from quick switchbacks to high speed sweepers were handled with confidence bordering on flat out insanity. Though I have no measuring equipment, I would not be surprised if these things allowed me to hit the magical 1g on a few nicely banked corners going up route 211 in Virginia.

If you live in a place that does not have to deal with winter, or can have a dedicated set of summer tires, then these tires should be on your list to check out. Just be careful of the puddles in wet conditions and I am sure that you will love the grip and control of these Bridgestones.

Just finished up my third drivers education event this season with 3959 miles on my 235/40-17 RE050A tires mounted on 8.5x17 BMW M3 wheels all around at Putnam Park Road Course (dry conditions, 80-F ambient temps). Tires are stickiest, 17 minutes into the session; the last 8 minutes, the tires begin to overheat, and grip falls off (and slip angles increase dramatically). The overheating is worse when carrying student passengers (tires overheat 15 minutes into the session). The RE050As breakaway characteristics are forgiving with plenty of aural warning of how much grip is available. On the road they remain quiet and smooth. I still have a slight vibration at some speeds--and will need a BMW-specific wheel balancing job. Wear seems appropriate for use--Im hoping for 5000 more miles before buying another set of five (I rotate the spare into service as well). Im not sure how much better the Pole Position version of these tires will be--as Im quite happy with the regular RE050As! At driving events, I wear a "Bridgestone" F1 Grand Prix winners cap to show pride in these tires.

I purchased these tires 18 months ago when they were heavily discounted and have put 33,000 on them with outstanding results. I rotate them evey 6,000 miles or so and they seem to wear very evenly. I dont drive "high school" style however I do drive a car that invites spirited driving from time to time and these tires have proven very solidly, not to mention qiuet and very smooth. I still have 5-6/32s on these tires so I would imagine that I could get another 15K miles out of them safely before replacement. For a tire with a 140 treadwear rating that is outstanding. thanks -Dan

...I beat on these tires for seven 22-minute opentrack sessions, and the drive home from Putnam Park was smooth and quiet as before the track event...

As one of the instructors at this weekends Central Indiana Region Porsche Club Drivers Education at Putnam Park Road Course, I was able to test my 97 BMW M3/4-doors track performance with the Bridgestone RE050A tires. With 1413 break-in miles on the tires (and 9/32nds tread depth), the dry stick, steering response, and handling are absolutely stunning. Putnam Park is a 10-turn high speed road course that places high stress on the left side tires, especially the LF http://www.putnampark.com/

My M3s suspension and camber settings are stock, and the RE050As held up quite well despite only -1.2 degrees of camber. Running 8.5 wide rears with the 235/40-17s all around neutralized the E36 M3s factory-dailed understeer (7.5 wide + 225/45-17 fr; 8.5 wide + 245/40-17 rr).

Morning sessions with cool track surface temps yielded the best performance from the RE050As, while the late afternoon sessions overheated the RE050As (tall tread depth)--stick would drop off late in each 22-minute session. The RE050As breakaway characteristics are progressive, protesting with a dull low-sounding groan. Overheated, the car drifts wide of the intended path. With shaved 4/32nd tread depth, I suspect these tires would do quite well as dedicated drivers education tires.

I beat on these tires for seven 22-minute opentrack sessions, and the drive home from Putnam Park was just as smooth and quiet as before the track event.

Although Bridgestone is replacing all the S03s and RE050s/RE05As with the RE050A Pole Positions, I still highly recommend the nonPole Position, nonrunflat RE050A--its been the best performing road/track tire Ive ever had.

This tire is the best street tire I have ever driven! The sidewalls are very stiff, so feedback and steering response are enhanced. The air pressure never needs adjusting. Every Saturday morning, I wake up, check the tire pressure, and it is right where I set it when I first got them 12000 miles ago. Now that's a high quality tire! They are starting to make some road noise now, but most likely that is because I need to rotate them. Tread life is great. After two auto-x events and daily driving, they hardly look worn. Treadware rating of 140 is very conservative. It should be higher, like 220. I'm definitely buying this tire again when the time comes, and that time is not coming soon. No wonder most auto manufacturers (like BMW, Mazda, Nissan, Honda) use this tire for their "summer tire package".

I drive a small car with a lot of power(280 lb/ft of Torque and 263 HP)and mistakenly thought that I colud get away with UHP tires yearlong, so got rid of my factory RE050A and got the Pirelli Zero Nero M+S(Which Ill review separately). Thats when I really missed the stickiness and steering response of the Bridgestones. These tires didnt squeal like the Pirellis, and the straight line dry traction under full power is excellent. ...However, just a shade under 15,000 miles and these tires are worn down to about 2/32 tread depth. That, in my book, is absolutely unacceptable!!...

These were the OEM tires that came on my 08 Infiniti G35. When new, these tires were great! Very responsive, good conering, decent wet tire traction, and low noise levels. However, just a shade under 15,000 miles and these tires are worn down to about 2/32" tread depth. That, in my book, is absolutely unacceptable!! There is no wet traction available whatsoever and the noise levels are pretty high. One would think for the price of these tires, you would get much better wear and lower noise levels. I am researching new tires and these will definitely NOT be a consideration. Please steer clear of these by all means!!

Probably the single worst tire for tread wear I have ever come across. This is my 3rd Infiniti G sedan with these tires and they start going bald at about 12000. They are toast by 20000. I lease my cars so I have to stretch it out as long as possible so I only have to buy 1 set before I hand it back. Any other tire but these would last my entire lease.

There is a good reason why the tread wear rating for the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A is just about as low as it gets. These tires are terrible. They are expensive and yet they preform poorly and wear even faster. The manufacturer must give a HUGE discount to the car makers for using these tires in hopes that you will foolishly buy another set when they wear out so quickly.

Use any other tire but these as a replacement tire. I have always used one of the Kuhmo models as replacement tires and I couldn't be happier with that decision.

If replacing your tires often is appealing to you then the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A is your tire.

...Obviously, the biggest downfall of these tires is the tread wear as indicated by the wear rating. I was lucky to get 20K miles out of both sets, at 15K they were at the must replace stage. I assume if I was 'easier' on them I could stretch it to 30K but I then again I'd just buy a set of janky all seasons...

I've gone through 2 sets of Bridgestone Potenza RE050As. I am a spirited driver and I enjoy throwing my RWD sedan into turns. Obviously, the biggest downfall of these tires is the tread wear as indicated by the wear rating. I was lucky to get 20K miles out of both sets, at 15K they were at the "must replace" stage. I assume if I was 'easier' on them I could stretch it to 30K but I then again I'd just buy a set of janky all seasons. The tradeoff for quick tire wear is outstanding performance. In both wet and dry summer days, these tires just always hooked and were always predictable. These tires perform the same down to the belts, unlike other tires that lose performance as they wear. The sidewall is incredibly stiff and doesn't flex in the turns. If you don't put on a lot of miles, they are a great tire.

Ignition Chevrolet SS Hot Lap(04:36)

Motor Trend Ignition's Randy Pobst and our own Matt Edmonds meet to bring the Chevy SS to the Streets of Willow at Willow Springs International Raceway.

Its 400 hp of Chevy V8 in what looks like a family sedan, but is a hot rod in disguise as it goes hauling down the straightaways on Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tires. And, oh what fun!

Testing on Ice: Winter / Snow vs. All-Season vs. Summer Tires(03:38)

First we tested all-season and winter / snow tires on our snowy test track.

Now watch as we compare the difference between winter / snow tires, all-season tires and summer tires by evaluating acceleration, stopping and cornering capabilities — this time using an ice rink as our test track.
